- This is the new Honda Civic. It's certainly one of the most eye-catching designs in its class, but does it have what it takes to compete with rivals like the Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf? I try to find out as a take a look around the cabin, find out how practical it is and take it for a drive.

The 1.5 is a beast of a car. I’ve bought one and it’s machine. Finally Honda is back like its old days
how about its handling,, is it so good as many say ?
@@telios13 Yes buddy. Fully independent rear suspension makes it awesome in the corners.
@@ArmaganDemiral thnks bro :)
@@telios13 Late comment. You can definitely drift easily in this Civic!
@@CvmmanderCvdy really? awesome!
Youve missed the point. not once did you mention the main reason people buy hondas. The VTEC has never had a mechanical failue of over one milion units. We buy hondas so we get to where were going for the next 10 years.
Gary Bromley Except VTEC is out and their 1.5 turbo engines are having massive issues with oil dilution causing premature wear...
Actually, did you know that Honda has not made one million VTEC units, but over 15 million units without fault?
Gary Bromley VTEC is the best, however, these turbo engines don't have vtec, lol
@@B0D33 now they fixed:D
It's the automatic models that are having the problems with oil dilution. Spoke to Honda UK and it's fixed on models from 2018-on..
like the look of the 1.5 petrol but my 8 gen Civic just keeps on going and going and going.... not a fault in 8 years.
Honda cars are reliable as.
lol 8 years is nothing
12 years and no issues
I have a 2015 year audi a6 which is more full of troubles than the great Honda
11 years with my 2008 Cvic Type S. No problems.
@@kiyoponnn yeah 8 years is nothing... just buy a low quality shitty german car where you can replace the whole car after the 8 years...
Why is he surprised at handling and fun factor, Honda always makes great fun to drive cars, great handling.
I test drove just the other day and smiled the entire time. It was the most fun I’ve ever had driving a potential new car.
I'm worried because I'd like to buy the previous Gen (2015) second hand but all the reviews say it's boring to drive
@@themindset3329 i have the previous 9th gen and it great fun to drive, go try one, not come across a single non suv Honda that hasn't been fun to drive and generations of civics have always been fun with great hanlding.
The quality of handling is something all civics have. Really good in cornering
Even noticed that with my 2014 civic. Can fling it into corners and still feel glued to the road
I got Red 1.0 Elegance and people are absolutely crazy over it. Especially the look of back. Its a bit of a fake sport car, but I love it ;-) Before my company parks everything - Mercedes and BMWs , but this is like Miss of the World entering the room compare to them, they have no chance. The design on this car is absolute masterpiece.
I just got my 1.5 sport version and absolutely love it.
What are your thoughts after 2 years? I love the pricing and look on that civic and i consider buying it.
@@original9978 still going strong hasn’t cost me anything in repairs. Still fun to drive as well. It’s pretty thirsty when it wants to be but I knew it would be.
@@ContactFault whats ur mpg like with the 1.5 especially since its petrol? I'm also thinking of buying it
@@edwinjoseph2318 i have 1.5 too..normal driving is 6.5l/km (calculate it to mpg) and if i rly am pushing it well it doesnt go over 8.0l/100km..have it for 3 years now and every single
day im happy i bought it over any other car.Its fun and everytime i park her i look back:).Thats how i know i bought the right car..u wont regret it i promise you..engine is punchy and overtaking is peace of cake..only problem is you always gotta look after radars lol..cuz you wont know how fast u going untill you look on speedometer
How is automatic gearbox on honda civic?
Just bought this from Carwow, picking up in two weeks! :)
Update: 7 months in and I absolutely love it!! Fun to drive, super comfortable and rear space isn’t a problem. Infotainment isn’t that bad, I use carplay anyway. Only complaint is MPG, averaging 37 MPG but because it’s new (2k miles so far) that may be the reason but in my old polo I averaged 45-50mpg
Which model did you go for mate. There is a 2017 model SR I was considering.
@@raybloodypurchase1941 I bought a 21 sport. Pretty comfortable and fun and the Turbo surprised me with how fast it is. SR is basically the same but with a 1 litre engine but thats still pretty nippy from what I’ve heard. :)
@@xSamiboi Nice one. This model is 14.5k and 2017 reg. Would be great to get the sport but it is more.
Has the MPG changed at all?
@@jukebox2568 I mostly drive in town and it stays around 38
Just ordered an EX model yesterday. When I took it for a test drive I approached a large roundabout and no word of a lie, I ended up going around three times! The grip is INCREDIBLE. I legit slammed it round at 40mph and it stuck like glue. The 1.0l turbo is super nippy too and with the six speed manual gearbox you couldn't really ask for more. The only downside I really noticed was the door bin was small BUT, you can fit a can of Monster in it. For a little bit extra you can get the 'tech pack' too which gives you wireless phone charging, LED lights all round and heated REAR seats! Definitely worth booking a test drive if you're looking for a new motor.
bro ur lying
@davidaseweje I'm really not. It was a great car. The roundabout was a big one not a small one but still, it was a great car. Got a 2022 Toyota Corolla Touring Sport at the moment. Its a good car too. Eyeing up a Honda E:Ny1 right now but I don't like the idea of purely electric.
It took me a while to get ues to the looks, but now that I do I must admit it is a stricking design that just like the one of 2006, will look new for quite a long time! There is a bit room for improvement on a facelift though. Mostly in the rear, I think the black plastic fake air fants are just too much. but overall, this does more to me then the Golf that just looks like the previous golf that looked just like the Golf before...
The presentation is very good,Mat. I really love that!
I love the look of this civic!
Agree, it's the best looking Civic in a while...
@notformebeaky not at all beaky. I never joke. Went to view one last weekend, seriously nice car.
Are you insane
@notformebeaky So what's a good looking car in this class then beaky? You're slagging off this Civic, but no mention of which car you prefer?
@notformebeaky you make some valid points. However, if we take the Focus RS it may be chav looking, but it's a real good to drive. I've not seen any reviews on it where they didn't say it was a fantastic car to drive. Audi A3 and Golf are always touted as the best cars in the segment, but the Audi is ridiculously expensive. You have to spend a lot to spec one up. The Golf I've never understood. It's not so special to drive and the whole "quality" thing about the interior I don't get. It's plain and quite bland. I don't see this quality in the Golf that everyone speaks about..
I don't class the regular Civic as being in a chav class. The type r maybe but not the regular car. It's even bought by older people not young boy racers, so to say it's a chav car is incorrect..
I saw one of these recently in a beautiful dark blue with some nice 17' wheels. It might have been the best looking ''ordinary'' car i've seen in a looong time.
very informative, funny and entertaining.Matt is the best auto reviewer in the world.
I had a 2008 Civic for more than 7 years! Reliability is number one selling point when coming to Civic. Also fuel economic is pretty good as well!
I just bought mine 2018 Civic hatchback EX-T. I also tried Mazda 3 Hatch back, after testing both cars, I went for the Civic. Civic hatchback has Good resale value... I still like Mazda 3 Hatch back over many other cars...
The new civic is amazing looking
My dad used to have the first generation Honda Civic, and I drove it when I was younger. It was a nightmare to drive that one because I had to keep the accelerator down all the time or the engine will die. And you know, it's a manual transmission car so it makes it ever so much more challenging!
Here in Canada this comes in 5dr hatchback, 4dr saloon, and 2dr coupé. The Coupé is absolutely beautiful
I actually love the sound of this engine, yes its noisy, but the sound is nice for a three cylinder.
A lot of people who drove with me told me that the engine is sound really good, without me even asking.
4 cylinder 1.5t is very nice
I have a civic and it is the best car I’ve ever had, fast, strong, stable, handles great ,fuel efficient and very reliable... when I had a Passat the gear box broke after 150k.. no more German rubbish for me just great reliable Japanese!
I hear you i only had german cars and im out
Did the Passat have an automatic gearbox? Lol. Usually it's VW's automatics that break.
Absolutely best brand and that Civic looks sick!! ❤️
I like it; a fresh breath of japanese air in a segment overcrowded with german smog.
Mohd A.
and thats until you buy one like i did. PIECE OF FUCKIN SHIT I HATE IT. Its an OK car but steering is shit and 2 wheel aligment later steering wheel still not straight and shit customer service by Honda.
What cars have you had before? This is garbage!!
rama6maiden Are you just trolling?! This new Civic did very well in Auto Express Driver Power Survey 2018. Owners clearly like it. Driving dynamics and performance were notable strong points, in its overall rating...
Don’t be mad you can’t afford quality Herman engineering bud lol I’ll stick with my Audi any day over a Honda (owned a 2016 accord coupe before)
I love this car sooo much
Anis khoda whe have the type R and the sport +
I love the sonic grey pearl colour
Getting it on saturday :) i had a civic 1993 coupe and im back baby
Had bmw's that had issues up the ...
I baught it, the 1.5 model with 182 bhp 2019, I LOVE IT. Baught it mainly because of the suspension system, having fun while mastering corners

Did a test drive of this with the 1,5 litre petrol engine, amazing car both in design and how it drives.
What put you off buying it?
Financial situation and the fact that my 2007 8th gen Civic hatch is still doing quite good :)
That's reassuring to hear from somebody with first hand experience as most people don't appear to have much positive to say about it. Thank you.
No problem. If you're thinking about this car, just go to the dealership and test drive it yourself. Then you'll know if you like it or not ;)
We just got our 1.6 diesel. No ive not been put off with Vw crippling the diesel market. It's a great looking car. Great to drive and great on economy. Traded the crv in. They just go on and on never had any problems with a Honda and we have had a good few Honda's. All be it, crv's
Really like the look of it tbh… Tempted to go for this ahead of a Golf
Golfs are and were always boring, even ugly. This Civic was such a dissapointment for me. Seems to be a good car, the type R seems to be a great car. But man, can't over the fact that it looks like a car for kids. Lots of basically unneeded elements on it, with fake vents and fake everything. It's design is, well, kitsch. Bad taste.
My old man got the 1.0 litter model and its amazing. 120 horse and the turbo kicks it really low down so its rapid all the way up to the ton and it handles like a go kart, Its now 3 years old and no problems except the aircon stopped blowing cold air, haven't had it fixed yet so am not sure what's happened. Very nice car but Ill take my 1999 2.2l Prelude over all this modern guff any day.
Good review, agree on some points but overall an excellent car. Very pleased with mine.
That engine noise when reving it's VTEC just kicked in yo! And it's amazing, at least in older Civic's
Some angles look great, some not so much. In any case, the car is an amazing package.
Best Civic design the VIII gen, the one I have. This car never ages, such an ahead of its time design and pretty risky aswell, but amazing nonetheless. Plus probably the best diesel engine put in a car for a long time that 2.2 i-Ctdi.
Always had a thing for civics, I pick up my limited edition sport line next week!!
I think he changed the rating from consider to shortlist. I don't remember him saying "if you don't like the look of it, avoid it"
Just bought one of these in the Sport Plus trim (1.5 petrol) through carwow. Saved a few thousand.. buzzing
I always get excited when you open the boot and pull out that trolley bag.
Matt your videos are amazing, can you try to have them have a little high volume setup
Imma get this as my first car. It’s iconic
Claudio Andrei You’re getting this car for your first car??? It’s like 17k bro lol. I’m getting it for my 21st birthday -383 days roughly (since I’m getting it early)

Where from and is It a 1.6 diesel

Hi mate what year was the one you bought
Mines 15 and I’ve never had an engine problem. It ran a bit low on oil once when I skipped a service. I had to change the suspension once but that’s it.
Another great video
Request a video on list of car from your "buy" list
Are you going to take into consideration the 2017 budget changes to diesel taxes in future on your car reviews when pushing diesels?
Great review! However there appears to be too much comparison with the VW Golf, Seat Leon and Skoda Oct... they three are epic but I personally find them too conventional, a bit generic, and the Honda Civic looks way cooler. I LOVE the new design, I don't see who should hate it. Conservatives fancy Toyota and VW prods anyways!
I have the MK8 1.4 vtec and that engine is lacking. But when I'm in 2nd and rev high, I love it, so for that reason I want to try out a Civic with more power and a bigger engine. I've been looking at these and hope the price falls relatively soon as I want the 1.5 turbo, I just don't know what to expect (but awesomeness). I've driven a 1.2 tfsi and the turbo kick in is beautiful, so a vtec with turbo... Unimaginable
Love the comments and enjoy the explanation
Honda cars are one of the best reliable cars out there today am defo buying one soon
Imran Amin you should, I picked one up yesterday and I love it!
Gonna buy a used 2017-2018 model of the 1.5 L Turbo Sport Edition this spring. Really looking forward to it!
Good choice
@@dragospahontu I got a Mazda 3 2.0 instead haha. But they are quite similar. Its like a BMW 3 vs an Audi A4.
@@Lollakuk yeah, new cars have gotten really good, the Mazda is awesome but it is smaller than the Honda.
@@dragospahontu Yeah but they are in the same class. And to be honest 4.4 meters vs 4.5 meters are more or less the same for me.
Heck even 4.45 vs 4.51 meters I see that as the same.
The best car review ever.
Hi my name I Samuel 😁 I keep follow and watch every video u do I love your videos keep it up.
"you shouldn't be able to do this in a Civic!"...... Clearly someone completely unfamiliar with older Civics
Not a Type R. This is a regular civic which has always been... Boring.
@@SiamHossain7 Dunno. A friend had a 2008 (i think? or 2010) civic sedan, and it wasn't very powerful, about 140hp or so but it was quite a nice car to drive. It revved up nicely and i wouldn't call it boring. What I'd call boring is a vw Golf. Even the GTI. Drove it, boring.
The EP2 Civic was anything but boring. Honda has been trying to shake off the image that they are primarily purchased by older people. Yes, the CTR is a legendary car but not all civics are Type R and not all are boring.
@@SiamHossain7 ever driven the 1.5 dual carb. Great fun
I’m picking up at 1.0 VTEC SR today 😁
I know we’re 4 months on but how do you like it? I’m umming and arring about it!
I wanted Honda Civic so much, when I was getting a new car. But with that prize and 1.0 engine I was not sure for a long time (and 1,5 L was out of my reach). Than I have found Seat Leon FR with 1,4 engine and full equipment. So I got Leon and its amazing car. I really love it, but sometimes wonder what would it be like having Civic :/
Seriously considering this car, above Mazda in drive quality (was a bit surprised too) and design is growing on me. It appeals to my liking of strong brutish looks.
I personally like the design of the 4 door better. It's also quicker and is more fuel efficient
When he scrolls through the previous models, all I was seeing was how well it’s evolved, whilst he made the opposite point
Drove a 2020 diesel model on Friday loved it will get a petrol one if I see one soon
You are one of the best reporters out there!
Hang on last time i watched this video he says consider but now shortlist mat have you change your mind on the civic?
Sedan version looks better. Not that I hate hatchback version. It's all right. I would definitely have this one over bland german rivals
You can never beat the practicality of a hatchback. It's not as heavy as a wagon but very close in terms of loading posibilities. And beauty is subjective. I see sedans old fasion, for older people where hatchbacks have a more apealing younger looks.
Zeeshan Mehfooz the hach is better
@Food Recipes german cars are reliable ive had a 2008 bmw 330d no problems for 6 year
@@Ethankeenan02 German cars aren't that reliable.
@Food Recipes The MK7 Golf is the blandest thing out of Germany, they literally make it bland on purpose because its buyers like it that way, and it still looks much better than this Civic, or any Civic made in the last 20 years for that matter.
I bought one last year after watching your review. It looks really expensive and upmarket and is lovely and spacious on the inside compared to the mercedes which was my first choice.
Thats legendary HTC!
I've owned one for almost 3 months now. Generally I really do like the car, it's very engaging to drive and actually decent fun. I got the 1.0 CVT SR model and equipment level is really generous and build quality is great, and the car is just so spacious. The only real let-down for me is the awful MPG I'm getting, only about 31-35 mpg in the city although it does drop quite a bit when on the motorway. My advice would be to go for the manual model if you can, and if you can get the 1.5 liter 4 cylinder.
Good review thanks. What MPG are you getting on the motorway? Also are automatics less economical than manuals?
languageoffootball Thanks! Well on the motorway I usually get around 6 litres per 100km (Sometimes it goes down to 5 litres), you will have to do the mpg conversion :) so Its actually quite good on the motorway But Its the city driving that exposes the worse mpg. But Its different from one car to the next if auto/manual is more economical. Generally nowadays autos are more economical. But I really like the car, the mpg is a minor issue tbh.
Thanks for the helpful insights - much appreciated.
Useful review . Thank you . How about the performance on mountain road ? Say about 35 degree . I'm asking because I have to drive such steep to my garage from the main road.
Should be fine i think, havent really tried it hahah sorry. Take the car for a test drive and drive it on normal roads for you. That should tell you if its good for you ;)

I like it, it's different as cars should be a lot of them are very similar especially the ones owned by the Vw group.
They really nailed it with the design of this gem Civic. Especially the hatchback and coupe!

Thinking of buying 1 of these I'm going to go see 1 tomorrow it's the 1.5 turbo only thing putting me off is the lack of headroom in the back
Lucky you. Brits get manual transmission. In Australia, we can have any transmission we want, so long as it's a CVT.
The dealer told me that the manual made up less than 10% of the total sales in the last model Civic. So, they ditched it. Mind you, I just found out that the MY19 Golf GTI will no longer have manual in Aus for the same reason. (Brave). Wait until the motoring journos start barking, like they did on the CVT Civic!
We have no manuals in any cars besides the local ones here in Malaysia... Takes the driving fun out of... You guessed it, driving.
