Drag Pipes VS Vance & Hines Big Shots - 2003 Harley-Davidson FXST

- My Harley came with slash style un-baffled drag pipes. I absolutely hate Drag pipes. They're obnoxiously loud, they hurt performance on an un-tuned bike, they burn your pants, and they kick up dust if they are slash style pipes. So I picked up a used set of V&H Big Shots for a hundred bones. I had to buy gaskets, gear clamps, and baffles bringing my total to about $150.00. Now I am very happy with the sound and appearance of my hog. Enough said.

Im not a bike guy but in '98 I restored my dads '67 305 Honda scrambler. He and my mom were married 30 yrs in '99 and they had dated on the bike. At any rate, my point is, it had high pipes with no muffler or baffles and I loved the throaty sound that little verticle twin made..
Yeah, they can sound good on smaller displacement engines. This bike has a 1584 cc.
Loud pipes save lives
Unless they are so loud that they make you go deaf. I need to preserve my hearing for SHTF.
I had an 03 Heritage Softail. Loved it. I just cut the baffles out. I had the carberated one too.
SWEET MACHINE you've got.
Before it was just way too damn loud and I had to put earplugs in before I could watch the video now it's nice and quiet I generally like Vance & Hines they are usually just about the right amount of loud
I have the factory pipes and thought about just de-baffling them but I thought these would look/sound better.
One thing with Harley's, there is always unexpected problems to encounter, with my limited twin experience anyway. I think your new pipes are much better and flow with a classic look. Pushing the noise backwards is always best. Job well done👊👍
I have currently have several makes of bikes and throughout the past have had all the major brands except EU. The holiday davidson's get a bad rap from AMF day's. The modern Harley's are extremely dependable these days when properly maintained. All my bikes serve a different purpose. However my Harley's are just as dependable as any of the rest. Although my 1983 Honda Big Red ATC probably has them all beat! Great Content 👍
🇦🇺😎👍Hey mate . Pretty loud….the new pipes look great…yep , they sound a lot better…good stuff 🏁🇺🇸
Better have ur Gremlin Bell....
Very nice. Looks better sounds good too. I like the spoked wheels too.
Thanks!
By rhe way, the longer pipes look better on your setup. Shorter pipes look better on a chopped style setup. Looks and sounds great 👍 JMO
Thanks, I agree
Looks and sounds great man
I understand . That use yo be me how can I make this louder. lol now I've found myself saying I want this thing to shut up how
I didn't hear anything about diversion cones. You might want to put a set next to the head where the pipe mounts. They increase backpressure at the head and will gain HP and torque that you lose with strait pipes. Might have to adjust the low speed mixture or air screw to richen with pipes. If your mixture is too lean it will run hotter and blue your pipes.
The slash pipes had no cones and the PO did not tune/jet the carb to match. He just wanted it to sound good between bar hops. The baffles I have now have increased bottom end performance.
@TheHandsOnChannel Yes, but you need the backpressure at the head it is most important. I have a friend that dyno tunes drag pipes and different exhaust systems and it can be worth up to 8HP and gives you a ton more low end torque. Kind of like using small tube headers on a truck. Especially for a daily driver. Guys that put 2-1/2" exhaust on their Chevy trucks kill the drivability and fuel mileage with factory manifolds. Without torque to get it moving the Horsepower is nothing. Just letting you know about a cheap upgrade that most people don't know about when they do pipes, even with baffles.
@@jasonbusch3624Oh good to know. I thought the baffles would negate the need for cones, but your analogy makes sense. Thanks!
@TheHandsOnChannel Your welcome. I like cheap Horsepower and drivability. Like rip your arms off torque lol
like the new
A biker that cannot hear a car horn because his pipes are too loud could be dangerous.
I didn't notice much change in volume of exhaust. As long as you like it 👍. I don't like loud pipes on mine, I run stock pipes.
The camera didn't really pick up the change as much as my ear. When I ride now it's just a low rumble rather than a high pitched pop.
