@Ali O dang, imagine calling your own opinions to be facts. I personally find Halloween a bit overrated, since it's too simple, the plot is weak and the atmosphere, suspense, music and concept save it. It's a great film, but not as unique as scream.
I think it's just the simplicity of the film that's helps the success. Like, just 'someone in a mask killing people', 'relatable characters with good depth to them', 'the mystery of the 'who dunnit' scenario' and the mix of gore and humour. Its the perfect recipe for a good film!! Other horrors can be too silly or forced to what they think horror is with dodgy cgi effects or ghosts or creatures and too much going on. Scream also hasn't exhausted itself like Halloween and Friday 13th with loads of films. Like it's been 25 years and we're just about at 5 films, to which this new one is fresh for 2022!! 👍 How fantastic is that. The franchise still popular and alive. Its definitely doing something right 👍. Even the ghost face mask is simple, funny and scary all at the same time 😱. Great scream content by the way, always like your videos 👍
Simplicity on the surface, but so many Easter eggs. So many little things that I didn’t know about the killer’s tendencies until I started watching these UA-cam videos. Perfectly simple on the surface as you’ve stated, and severely sophisticated behind the scenes.
I remember watching the first movie for the first time as a kid and seeing how well the opening scene was written and presented that it instantly hooked me to finish watching the rest even though as a little kid you don’t have the greatest attention span.
I feel like your view about Scream is my thoughts exactly on the original intent of Halloween and Michael Myers or the first Strangers film/other underappreciated films. The concept can seem chilling. Someone just snaps with no explanation at age six or kills you because "you were here".
I can't agree it's the best horror movie ever, there can be no 1 champion, but it's like number 1 or 2 for best slashers. It's so real in the sense the characters understand horror movies and actually fight back, the killer is intelligent but completely human, there is a big mystery to who it is without the answer being super obvious, and usually the important characters, at least in the first one, are all very interesting.
I would be very open to the idea of them making a Scream prequel. I've gotten into true crime on UA-cam. There's just something so much creepier about them. Jodie Arias, Jennifer Pan, etc. Start with Maureen's story. Show the infidelity and the impact it had on a kid dealing with sociopathy and convincing an impressionable friend to commit murder. Plotting out Casey's murder. I feel like that would be so interesting.
I, too, was always fascinated by the fact that it was realistic, just a couple of guys with a knife. (This was one way I felt that Scream 3 failed. It used a big explosion, which meant it resorted to that kind of crap that the earlier films simply didn't need.) It's also like Randy said: "Simplicity. If it gets complicated you lose your target audience."
While I don't think the film is simplistic in the slightest, I do agree on the realistic aspect of the film. The film is depicted in a way where it could happen to anyone. And unlike the slashers of the 80s you actually cared or were invested in a lot of the characters that were victims. This film reminds me a lot of Independence day in that it heavily references(paying homage) a lot of past films in it's own genre while maintaining the realistic aspect of the story.
You're so right about the effect a horror movie can have on you as kid. The opening scene TERRIFIED and SCARRED me for my childhood. That's all I could handle for the longest time. THAT scene alone kept me on my parents bedroom floor for like.. 2 years. On one hand, granted, I was 8 lol. And I was able to get past it & became a diehard fan of both this franchise AND the horror genre by the time I was a normal 13 or 14 but still. I LOVE Scream & its my favorite, and it HAS to be in everyone's top 5 (at WORST top 10) of all-time in my opinion especially if they're trying to be "honest" that they know a lot about the genre, what works and what doesn't, and the importance of significance certain films have. Like it or not Scream is one of the MOST important movies EVER for the horror and especially slasher genre and anyone who says they "know the genre" can't deny it or even try even if it may not be high on their list of favorites. Its because of that I try to look at everything objectively... or try my absolute best to not let bias ALWAYS win out lol... so I actually put the original Halloween & all it has meant, achieved, and inspired ahead of Scream, at least in my "honest" ranking lol. My fan only ranking? Scream all the way lol. Psycho, Halloween, and Scream HAVE to be deemed the 3 most important slasher films of all time. Your ranking is up to you but those 3 are about your only choices lol
They actually commented on this in the beginning of scream 4 after watching stab seven with the two girls where one of them says, "I like the stab films they're scarier. There's just something so real about a guy with a knife who kills people."
I'll be honest I find Halloween and Michael Myers to be *better* than Ghostface, I like a lot of what you said in this video. Scream definitely changed the face, but was also trying to compete with others in horror genre, I'll be honest, I think it's overlooked in the genre, and is the diamond in the rough. Great video!
THANK YOU i agree no slasher movie ever created has the thrill the climax the story line i started watching scream at 10 i absolutely loved it nothing will ever top it scream 5 is the most anticipated horror movie ever
i agree with you buddy, scream n halloween is my favorite 2 horror films ever and i think because of the realness that these could happen, even scream more than halloween But halloweens always n forever be my #1
Its so great to hear your thoughts because I have always thought the SCREAM franchise is the greatest horror franchise of all times. SCREAM was iconic and arguably the biggest game changer. As a teenager SCREAM had such hype even as kids and we managed to get one of our mums to rent it on VHS! During its release it was huge on every count. SCREAM 2 was also brilliant, but SCREAM was the game changer. Great job Beyond The Mask. Ill keep checking in re: the new trailer and other updates. Really great point re: how SCREAM feels like a crime doc and was so raw, gritty and real.
Scream is my favorite movie (and franchise) of all time. I first saw it when I was 10-years-old. It genuinely scared me. I watched A LOT of horror as a kid (and now) and Scream is the ONLY horror film to scare me. Not only didn't scare me the first time I saw it, but on subsequent viewings as well. It was the whole idea that this COULD actually happen. Plus, the characters, story, writing, directing, etc. are all amazing.
I eww as actually talking to my husband the other day about how scream is the best horror movie and I stumbled upon this video... happy I am not alone in my love of this movie. It's just always entertaining no matter how many time I watch it ❤🤟❤
The thing about Scream that makes it so fascinating for me is that Ghostface (any of them, doesn't matter which specific killer) evokes so many different feelings. They can be both terrifying as that hyper realistic psycho killer that could get any one of us at any time, BUT because Ghostface isn't supernatural or even a super strong or highly skilled person, Ghostface is often funny and makes us feel better knowing we could easily defeat them. All the tripping and falling and getting smacked gives much needed levity to a grim 'slasher' without totally removing the fear and making it a pure parody. It's great how watching the first one especially I can feel so horrified and disgusted and saddened by that opening scene (similar to watching gory true crime episodes) but later be like "ah Ghostface fell over, what a silly bitch"
The reason we should fear Ghostface is the same reason criminals fear Batman. It won't stop to do it's deed, no matter how tired, injured or nearly killed it is. Just think about it, if a person is willing to charge even after near-death experience, that is a dangerous individual. So never under -estimate ghostfaces in real life who may hurt you for stupid reasons of no fault of yours, but will be thoroughly commited to the cause of harming you
I LOVE Scream more than any other horror/slasher film because it has the perfect cast, great characters that pull me into Woodsboro; it has an amazing small town setting; the photography/cinematography is perfection; great score by Marco Beltrami and soundtrack; and yes, as an 18 yo kid seeing this in the theater in 1996 I thought Billy and Stu were effing cool, even as they gutted their classmates. A part of me wanted to imagine what that was like... Scream is perfect to me in every way and I'm in love with this damn flick. I even love the sequels, flaws an all.
I agree with you. I also like Scream 1996 because the way they kill is so interesting to me. Like billy is always trying to scare people and Stu likes to get the job done. The other movies they are all just basic in my eyes and movies that aren't any of the Scream's are all kind of the same.
Scream is my favorite horror film, but it never scared me, even as a young teen watching it in the theater at age 14. I was on the edge of my seat, but it has never been the type of film that freaked me out. Maybe I'm just overconfident in my ability to defend myself 😆 (to be fair I do have a black belt, but I didn't when I was 14!), or maybe it's because I have had actual paranormal experiences which ARE scary to me, so films like The Conjuring are more real to me than they might be to other people. Of course if someone was trying to kill me, I would be afraid, but movies about human killers never scare me. They can be suspenseful though, which even after seeing it so many times I STILL find Scream suspenseful on multiple viewings. It's a PERFECT film.
My favourite Main Scream Characters In Order: 1. Tatum (Wish she survived, Rose McGowan really gave this character a sassy edge, loved her personality) 2. Sydney (Perfect Final Girl) 3. Gail (Loveable Bitch, Scream 2 Gail is my favourite) 4. Randy (His death hits hard in Scream 2) 5. Billy (Love his starring psycho eyes) 6. Stu (Facial expressions can be too much but he plays the part of the naive unhinged character very well) 7. Dewey (I think it is time for him to die in the new Scream, Never really warmed to him as the dopey cop) Remember these are just my personal opinions on the main Scream characters. Would love to know your own top 7's.
The self awareness is what makes these movies so good. You can watch them to be both entertained and critical of it and the overall genre. And the way it’s written let’s you in on the jokes, and is never condescending with you. Expecting you to accept less than what is suggested. As far as the genre goes, the first is the best for reinventing the concept, listing and making fun of its patterns. But as a personal favorite, Scream 2 is the one I prefer. It takes the idea of the first film, to a higher level. And has a better cast and music. It’s a little creepier too, when we think of who’s hiding behind the mask. The root of all evil, so to speak. And Mrs. Loomis vendetta is more realistic and strangely understandable. She’s not an attention seeker, she just wants to get revenge on whomever killed her child. Wether he was a psycho or not. She’s completely blinded by resentment, and it’s justified. And that’s scarier I think.
Dude, we are kindred. I saw SCREAM on opening weekend when I was 16 years old and it changed me and how I see things ever since. I totally agree. It felt real.
I love scream one of my favorites sidney prescott is my favorite character and scream 1 is my all time favourite it's a movie that can truly happen I totally agree with that
Scream is my favorite horror franchise because it’s just a very good blend of many elements. It’s a Jack of all trades and a master of none, but it’s the fact that it does EVERYTHING it sets out to do well is what makes it great. It’s also intriguing enough to make you wonder who Ghostface is while being entertaining. The entertainment doesn’t detract from how smart it is, and it’s not trying to be so smart that it loses its entertainment value. That’s not to even mention how amazingly meta and self-aware it is. Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven made such a masterful franchise with Scream. I love every single one and I can’t wait for 5.
i would say it is the best because it really connect to real life murders in a way…. its real people killing folks and the phone call part him just trolling his victims before he kills them is just the scariest shit ever… and the guys voice always scared me when i was a kid but now that im older i love these movies and respect how they changed the slasher series
Orsolya Gaal was recently killed in Forest Hills, Queens NY - she’s this beautiful blonde woman and mother and was brutally stabbed to death 54 times then later put into a duffle bag and dumped a mile away from her home. Her killer was her secret lover. It reminded me of Sidney’s mother Maureen, who also died of being stabbed to death, allegedly, by her lover Cotton. Turns out it wasn’t Cotton. Sorry Cotton. But still, Orsolya’s murder was so similar. Though New York City is a city, there are pockets of neighborhoods in the city the looks like a suburb, and Orsolya lived in a posh suburb called Forest Hills Garden, and she was murdered at night in her basement by her lover while her teenage son was upstairs asleep. The killer even sent a text message to the victim’s husband that was away that the entire family is next. Very chilling.
I remember watching this at the theatre when I was 12 and it scaring the be-jesus out of me. I feel much the same about this film than this channel, excellent video!
I can have my own bias I know but I just can't bring myself to saying Scream is the best ever (I exclude box office!) although I've got such admiration for it. Yeah, it revitalized the slasher sub genre but that was it's main doing. Objectively, it has done more bad than good because of how damn good it was. So good many films following were inspired and fell short. And there's so many films in the same genre/subgenre that came before or after Scream worthy of the same title that makes it hard for me to pick what's my all-time favorite/the greatest horror film.
Believe it or not, Scream helped revived the horror/slasher genre in the 1990's because around that era horror movies were on the decline with ongoing sequels and remakes.
One great thing I think was unexpected is , I almost find scream more relevant now , as most movies mentioned in scream were 15 years old , by the time scream came out , Halloween Friday the thirteenth , perhaps my years are slightly off , but now , scream is as old or older then the movies that it mentioned , which means , we are the kids who grew up now , I dunno maybe this comment woulda worked better when I turned 20 , but , it almost makes sense to me , that we are the ones influenced by the horror movies we have seen growing up
I think scream is one of the most revolutionary horror movies out there it tells you that you don't have to so complicated or have actual monsters. You can be in that very situation of a anonymous killers. The only bad part was near the end where they stab each other before killing her other then that it was revolutionary in the horror genre.
Scream definitely impacted me 🔥 it's noteworthy not only in horror but just as a movie. I feel like I Know What You Did Last Summer tried to copy Scream in a way with the cloak and dagger routine but made many differences and still came out superb.
It’s definitely a blueprint for horror because it was ahead of its time, being that it was based on horror film characters people were already afraid of‼️ Plus it based some of the plots on real life situations…. it’s definitely a movie I can watch over and over again…
And it also added the who is the killer mystery that I can't recall ever being done with a slasher before it. At least most of the popular ones of the 80s(Jason, Freddy, Myers, Chucky etc)
My favorite horror franchises are scream and halloween, but I honestly feel like the original scream movie was a better movie than halloween 78, and i agree with everything you said in this video, but if someone asks me what's my favorite scary movie, for some reason i always have to go with halloween 78, i cant even explain why
I think that Ghostface has got a lot of strength and intelligence in his mind because he knows that he was Trying To kill someone up with the knife and he Running and hiding that he was Trying To kill everybody that’s all I know that and I Understand That Ghostface was a popular Because he’s got a Lot Of publics In His Future.
Scream is incredible and I do think it's one of the best horror movies ever made. I think the thing that makes ghostface the ideal "movie monster" is the anonymity, ghostface could literally be anyone.
it simply is epic & THEE BEST! it was just fresh & new and brilliant when ut came out during its time. Wes Craven is brilliant. the horror genre NEEDED something new and different..this was great & the ending was such a surprise (2 killers) etc. my favorite (tied with Bride of chucky lol)
It’s the best slasher by a lot. But horror as a whole? For me it’s The Shining. It’s just not ready for me to drop that from number one. True classics stay relevant forever. The shining came out 41 years ago and it’s still relevant. Maybe one day Scream will surpass it because it’s also still relevant. But for now, The shining is an immortal masterpiece. Scream is 2nd. And way ahead of anything else.
I love scream but halloween 1978 is the GOAT if u want to rank it 2nd ill agree but its not better than halloween after that classic every movie including scream was copying it if u ask me my top 5 horror movies are halloween 1978,scream 1996,friday the 13th part 2,freddy the 1st one and psycho but halloween literally changed the game to this day
SCREAM is definitely the most STYLISH & COOL slasher movie. Plus, no other horror movie can be credited for singlehandedly saving the entire horror genre like SCREAM did!
I first watched the original scream when i was 12, i didnt Think it was scary. And it did not feel, like a horror movie to me. It felt more like a murderous suspense movie. Dont get me wrong, i do Think it is a decent movie. I just dont Think that it is a good “horror” movie. Anyways that is just my opinion.
scream was not scary at all because 1 they made the killers voice hot 2 both killers were fucking hot but other than that scream is definitely one of the best slashers ever, the way stu gutted the two was just insane to me like horror movies now will never be like that and it’s great that they made it so stu had no motive but billy did idk man I miss the old slasher films tbh
The psychological aspect of trying to figure out who the killer is on the first two films were tip top. On the third one, finding out the backstory of the killer was cool. Part 4 sucked!!!!
@@ameennasar2583 not just color quality it just didn’t make sense at all and the beginning messed up the flow for the rest of the film. The killers weren’t strong enough to look good as killers.
"None of these films had the impact that Scream had Scream was based on a true story" that is 100% false Kevin Williamson saw the news coverage on Danny Rolling the Gainesville Ripper. Which inspired him to come up with the concept of Scary Movie before it was later changed to Scream for Scream to be based on a true story it the plot would need to be about Danny Rolling's murders in Gainesville, Florida. Lots of movies throw in 'based on a true story' for marketing purposes to sell a film that isn't even true but one thing that you didn't mention in your video is that in 1997. Before Scream 2 was released there was a murder case where two teenage boys around 13 or 14 of age committed murders because of Scream they killed a mother meant to be their Maureen Prescott. They chased her around their home stabbing her multiple times and their next victim was a blonde-haired girl from their school as their version of Casey Becker fortunately the police caught them before they could kill anyone else. Both teens boldly claimed that they would copy Scream 2 after it gets released. Their entire motive for doing it was simply for media attention they wanted media fame for being killers turning Scream into a reality making a movie about what they did would be a true story. But in my personal opinion Scream while entertaining it relied too much on John Carpenter's Halloween to stand on its own as a film. In fact, if it wasn't for Carpenter's Halloween and Hitchcock's Psycho there wouldn't even be a Scream franchise at all the film owes what came before it to even exist. In my personal opinion, John Carpenter's Halloween is one of the greatest horror movies ever made it was inspired by both Hitchcock's Psycho and Bob Clark's Black Christmas. The independent film turned Michael Myers into one of the greatest film slashers in movie history its scares are based around mood and atmosphere with little to no blood. In that original film, Michael Myers had no motive he was just killing because he wanted to and that's what made him scary like his mask he was a blank slate. We didn't even know if he was human or not because nothing could kill him the only thing we knew was that he murdered his older sister when he was only six years old. As for Halloween's success, it was completely based on word of mouth which cost $320,000 to make, and what launched the 80s slasher era which also included Halloween imitators.
Definitely not the greatest “horror” film in my opinion as I personally don’t consider it horror, but more of a mystery thriller. It is definitely one of the greatest movies made however, just simply because of its cultural impact.
Just had one of my friends watch scream for the first time and she kept thinking it was Dewey. Well first Dewey and then Billy and Dewey again 🤣 she was surprised by the ending
Scream didn’t just have a impact on horror. It made an impact on teen movies in general. Plus Happy Birthday Wes Craven
Scream is definitely one of the greatest slashers ever.
Nah, that title goes to Halloween
@@alio6051 Can't really compare them. Halloween was the best of its time, Scream was the best of its time. Personally I like Scream more.

They can be suspenseful though, which even after seeing it so many times I STILL find Scream suspenseful on multiple viewings. It's a PERFECT film.
My favourite Main Scream Characters In Order:
1. Tatum (Wish she survived, Rose McGowan really gave this character a sassy edge, loved her personality)
2. Sydney (Perfect Final Girl)
3. Gail (Loveable Bitch, Scream 2 Gail is my favourite)
4. Randy (His death hits hard in Scream 2)
5. Billy (Love his starring psycho eyes)
6. Stu (Facial expressions can be too much but he plays the part of the naive unhinged character very well)
7. Dewey (I think it is time for him to die in the new Scream, Never really warmed to him as the dopey cop)
Remember these are just my personal opinions on the main Scream characters. Would love to know your own top 7's.
Great video :) I think it’s the greatest horror series of all time. I think every movie is really impactful & solid!
One thing I've only just noticed is that when Sidney is at high school in Scream '96 she looks a lot like Linda Blair from Exercist.
I love Halloween 78 and all that's it's done, but Scream just blows it out of the water! Sorry not sorry.
This movie deserves its spot really
If Stu is alive it becomes the very thing it mocked
Scream 1 is DEFFO on MOUNT RUSHMORE!!! It’s not even a question!
Wanna know what's the scary part is you don't know who the killer is ? Ghostface can literally be anyone if it wanted to
The reason why i love scream and why it beats every horror movie for me
Is that it can become real
This could happen someday
Its only a matter of time
Ok Now you are in a watch list lol
@@sonnyliston8922 I dont know what I was think at the time, bruh 💀
err you would think as a "horror fan" that you would know that scream isn't a horror film
Ummmm what else was based on true story?
Halloween
Texas chainsaw
Black Christmas
Nightmare on elm Street
Scream is incredible and I do think it's one of the best horror movies ever made. I think the thing that makes ghostface the ideal "movie monster" is the anonymity, ghostface could literally be anyone.
It’s a slasher movie more than a horror movie, it doesn’t scare all that much it’s just a lot of killing and great story
Best horror movie of the 90's and is number 3 on my list of best horror movie's of all time ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Can't lie I love scream mostly cause of the details and also the two killers are so fucking amazing
All the cast are incredibly attractive too.
Well done. I agree.
Will have to check it out again
I love horror movies so much that I want be a horror movie director and actor
I’d love to watch a whole series on scream references in other popular horror movies
Definitely the best horror movie I've ever seen. Seen it 100 times probably and it still scares me in some parts.
I think it’s definitely one of the most realistic too
Scream is scarier than Rec? Bold statement friend
it simply is epic & THEE BEST! it was just fresh & new and brilliant
when ut came out during its time. Wes Craven is brilliant. the horror genre NEEDED something new and different..this was great & the ending was such a surprise (2 killers) etc. my favorite (tied with Bride of chucky lol)
Friday The 13th and Scream the best and most memorable and iconic horror movies
It's my #1 horror movie all time
Great video! I agree
great video i totally agree with everything you say
Fuck yea it is!
& Fear Street is one of the Best horror franchises out there now
& Fear Street 2 was Amazing!!!
Halloween 1978 for me all day, but Scream just might be #2
Same here
Matthew Lillard should be the good guy in the fifth one
Lol
That would be amazing!
In Scream 6 we can hope for Matthew Lillard to be a good guy helping out our heroes, as the long-lost twin of Stu Macher, Shaggy Macher
I prefer scream 4 and ‘22 to ‘96 but ‘96 is my third favorite
Anyways that is just my opinion.
i m p a c t
scream was not scary at all because 1 they made the killers voice hot 2 both killers were fucking hot but other than that scream is definitely one of the best slashers ever, the way stu gutted the two was just insane to me like horror movies now will never be like that and it’s great that they made it so stu had no motive but billy did idk man I miss the old slasher films tbh
I agree this the best horror movie
I'm a I'm a big scream van 😊
The psychological aspect of trying to figure out who the killer is on the first two films were tip top. On the third one, finding out the backstory of the killer was cool. Part 4 sucked!!!!
I just saw part 4.Man only if I didn't know the spoiler, it would have been lot thrilling. Why do many people hate that movie? Colour quality!?
@@ameennasar2583 not just color quality it just didn’t make sense at all and the beginning messed up the flow for the rest of the film. The killers weren’t strong enough to look good as killers.
I wouldn't call Scream the greatest horror movie ever.
I mean, everyone has their opinions in the end. But there's no doubt that scream is one of the greatest slashers ever made
And one of the most important
I was just gonna say I’ve never heard it based on true story lol
Definitely not the greatest “horror” film in my opinion as I personally don’t consider it horror, but more of a mystery thriller. It is definitely one of the greatest movies made however, just simply because of its cultural impact.
Best movie period
Halloween
🙏💯
C W Schultz
Love Scream but it barely rates as horror.
I say scream inspired 9\11 ...I said it
I Love All 5 of the Scream movies scary movie sucks 😱
Halloween and Nightmare way better
No it's not
Personally I like Halloween but I can't argue with logic, Scream is the goat
I got a joke what do you call ghost face
Answer a pathetic excuse for a Michael Myers
Just had one of my friends watch scream for the first time and she kept thinking it was Dewey. Well first Dewey and then Billy and Dewey again 🤣 she was surprised by the ending
It's not... Halloween is the best horror movie ever!
Why am I in tears watching this? I relate to your feelings too much hha
