Stu might've been the accomplice, but they were both equally terrifying. Stu is terrifying bc he did what he did bc he WANTED to. Billy gave him a plan and as long as he got to kill some people he didn't care. This is the same guy who had dolls hanging in his attic and thought of everything as some kind of joke. I love Billy, but he was no mastermind 🤣 him and Stu were bumbling teens, they were careless and impulsive. It's a shame the later movies focus more on Billy, Stu deserves some credit for the heavy lifting and it was Stu's idea to frame Neil. Him being the accomplice doesn't take away from his unhinged nature either.

One of the things they did (in my opinion) with Billy that was great was making him so obviously suspicious that I was convinced he wasn't the killer. So I was actually caught off guard by his reveal.

I really like this idea of Gale being the embodiment of the truth about Maureen's death, and how only after Sidney starts dealing with/accepting it both women can finally come together. It almost feels, in a weird way, as if good old messy Gale was a succesor or substitute to messy Maureen, which is actually kind of endearing, almost as much as it is tragic. Great analysis, I agree with basically everything :)

Billy and Stu worked perfectly together because Stu was wild and erratic, while Billy was in control and ice cold. But then just when you thought you’d figured them out, Billy would fly into an unbridled rage, while Stu would regress into a childlike fear. It was fascinating to see the different aspects of their personalities being brought out under stress.

Scream 1996 is my favorite horror movie of all time. It ranks at #2 on my top 10 favorite movies with The Dark Knight at #1 and Twister at #3. Hints my top 3 favorite genres. Action, Horror and Drama. This is also where I was first introduced to Neve Campbell before she later became my favorite actress after seeing other projects like Skyscraper and The Lincoln Lawyer. She's so badass and I could definitely see her in the DC or Marvel universe. She's already joining the video game world in Twisted Metal as Raven. So there's something.

Agreed, it was an absolute game changer at the time because no one saw it coming. Sadly anticipation for all the sequels has been so massive that we have had leaks, rewrites and changes of writer just to keep the plots under wraps. The first one was untouched, untarnished and perfect as a result. You will never get the shock/wow factor that you had when you watched the original for the very first time. Modern audiences have become so savvy that now we watch the sequels and deconstruct them to deduce the killers identities

Roman is almost 30 in S-3 as he says to Lance Henriksen..
"Im almost 30 and im done."
So he'd been 26 in S-1996 & Billy & Stu would've been 16-17. Which means they did Maureen when they were 14-15.
    Roman says in S-3.
"Been looking for Rina Reynolds my whole life, but Maureen Prescott says Rina was dead. So he thought,, great idea"
" your bf didn't like seeing daddy in my movies too much, didn't like it at all".
    "The kid was motivated"
    "Just needed a few pointers"

I may not agree about Scream being the best, but I do agree that it is good and that others who mimicked it didn't understand what made it good. The copycats just saw teenagers being killed by 'real life' killers, so they used that as a foundation, instead of the fact Scream fleshed out it's mainly lead and used the meta aspect to give the killers a unique angle. Personally, I think Scream 4 recaptured the magic, since it had Sydney's cousin trying to replace her for fame, while Sydney stops her as she shows how far she's come from the first film.

I always did think Billy and Stu were definitely the scariest compared to the other Ghostfaces. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but it could have to do with the fact that they did it just ’cause they wanted to. Billy’s explanation to Sidney always seemed like it was his excuse to do messed up stuff. I’m convinced he would’ve become a killer even without the parental abandonment. He just chose to take out his rage on and torment Sid. Meanwhile Stu likely didn’t need any convincing in order to kill- other than the fact that it would be fun.
That being said, the film has this unique blend of horror and comedy which is a huge reason it’s so good. Not the Casey scene though, that one is straight up horror. But afterwards we see poor ol’ Ghostface be kicked, have a fridge door slammed in his face, and beer bottles thrown at vital regions. It’s hilarious.
Even when Ghostface isn’t doning the mask, the film becomes really funny when you know who the killers are. That part where Billy practically falls down the stairs just to convince Sid that he’s totally dying makes me laugh every time now. And don’t even get me started on Billy’s and Stu’s whole dynamic after the reveal!
Basically Scream is super funny as you watch it, but at the same time, you know it would be utterly terrifying to actually live it.

Chaos Master: Scream is definitely one of my favorite horror/movies, but Halloween is my unapologetic all time favorite. But, to be fair, Scream couldn't have been made, much less successful, Without the others; which is why it refers to them (especially Halloween) so much. The main characters Know Halloween and the others and love it. The same as Sidney Prescott being the result of all of the other final girls and Ghostface is a continuation of Myers, Jason, and to a lesser extent, Chucky and Freddy.
To borrow the title of an old tv documentary show, it's about the Man (Wes Craven), Moment (the 90s, after an onslaught of slasher movies), and Machine (the use of the best parts of the others: horror, comedy, mystery, and a great villain to counter a solid protagonist).
I love Scream Because it does what it does so well

I would not say Wes Craven's Scream is the best slasher out there as there are others just as good and even better. Plus it only works as the 1980s slasher craze was a thing. It also worked as movies like Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, and Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers came along. You even have Wes Craven's New Nightmare that was the building blocks for this movie but from the perspective of the fans rather than the crew members.
Regardless, I usually will favor horrors that are as serious as possible. Scream is one of the exceptions as the comedy helps to keep it grounded in reality. It was made to deconstruct and reconstruct those tired 1980s slasher tropes or as I say rip them apart and put them together again. The sequels may not have the love this movie did but they help to go at the Final Girl trope through Sidney and now Samantha and Tara. The other aspect the sequels do is show that while most see legacy as an inherently good word, it's truly neutral as evil never dies but changes shape as the copycat Ghostfaces and the evil legacy demonstrates. It's like the legacy the Columbine School Massacre and even the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s serial killers.
Truthfully Michael Myers started out as grounded and Pamela Vorhees was grounded but I love the legacy this movie left as much as the movie itself.

The original Scream is indeed great... Until a certain point, that is. Once we have the killers reveal, it starts falling apart, with problems that will repeat themselves throughout this entire franchise: the killers talking endlessly about their motives instead of killing Sidney and some other surviving characters, and the fake deaths of Gail, Dewey and Randy.
Not to mention the fact that the two hacks behind it - Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven - ripped off two obscure horror movies (Evil Laugh, 1986, and There's Nothing Out There, 1991) in the screenplays of the Scream movies.

  • @uttermanbo

Never seen the sequals, but spoilers......
The true mastermind that manipulated Billy into the killings doesn't show up till the third film. Wes's last in his planned trilogy. That person being none other than Sidney's half brother.
Sidney's mother denied him because he was the result of a bad action. This hurt the boy, and he setup the murder of his mother and sister by finding the right psychopath.
