  • I've had this 2016 Hobie Outback for about 2 1/2 months now and I really love this kayak! In this video, I'll go over some of the features of the kayak that I like and highlight some of the aspects of the kayak you should be aware of if you're considering picking up one of these kayaks for yourselves.
Hopefully this video, along with my 2016 Hobie Outback Overview video, provides you plenty of information about this kayak. However, it's best to demo this kayak or any other kayak (especially these more expensive kayaks) to make sure it's the right kayak for you.
Please feel free to post any questions you may have about this kayak down below in the comments section and I'll do my best to answer your questions.
Thanks for watching and please subscribe for more gear review videos like this one along with more fishing and unboxing videos.

Appreciate the review. It was instrumental to me making the purchase as I felt you were telling the truth. As it turns out you were, because everything you liked and dislike about it is spot on.

Hi Jerry,I really appreciate your video good honest information. I am currently vacillating between the pro angler 12 and the outback 2017. I live in Colorado and will be mostly fishing rivers , lakes and reservoirs. I am 5'10 and an athletic 215 lbs. I will not be using a boat trailer but will be using the bed of pick up truck or a 10ft UTV trailer to haul. I haven't been much of fisherman in the past but really want to get into it for some summer fun. Please advise and thank you in advance.

Both kayaks are great and I really like the pro anglers. However, for me, as much as I like to fish it was much easier transporting the outback than the heavier pro angler. I transport my in the bed of my truck (which is a short bed Nissan Frontier) with a bed extender. If you want to fish rivers, I would think the outback would be a much better choice than the pro angler, not that the pro angler would perform poorly, I just think the outback would be able to handle the tighter river bodies a little better. Good Luck!

Hey Jerry. Great review. You hit on all great points. I am on the fence between 2017 Outback or Slayer Propel 10 for small lake/Delaware river fishing. You briefly mentioned the Slayer as having a bit more inside width. Did you consider a Slayer? If so what tilted you to the Outback. At this time, my only real concern with Slayer is the non-retractible rudder.
    Thanks

Thanks! It's actually Jeremy though, no big deal as I get that all the time! I did consider the slayer propel, however, the bodies of water I fish the most have a lot of weeds and grass growing up to the surface or just below the surface. The Outback can cut right through that vegetation in shallow water or I can fold the fins up by pulling one pedal back allowing me to coast right over them. The Slayer has a prop and I think I would have to pull up that prop many times to clean off any weeds. I actually have a friend out in California that had a slayer propel for about a month before he sold it to get an Outback. His prop kept getting tangled up in eel grass. The slayer does have a little more inside width and the reverse feature is nice. However, the new 2017 Hobies will be coming with their new drives that can go in reverse! I also felt the same about the rudder on the slayer. I still have the stock rudder on my Outback and it's great to be able to easily pull up the rudder when launching and coming back into shore.

      "Jeremy" ;-) Got it.
All good points. My lake fishing does not have much weed, but the section of the Delaware River that I fish does have weed, rock and a few wing dams with faster moving water. With colder weather coming I have until early next year to decide. What ever I decide I'll probably get 2 so I can have someone else join me when I'm out there. I saw the Mirage 180 videos. They will be standard on all 2017's. I'll be looking out for reviews on the M180 next month when they release it.
      Again, great channel !

Delaware River Fishing Dude i got the new 180 mirage and love it. It is a very smooth transition from forward to reverse. It's not as easy as just pedaling backwards on a slayer, but it's damn near. Also I hear the mirage is a little faster than the propel drive.

Nice! I'm thinking of getting the reverse drive next year. I can fish fine w/out the reverse but there are definitely times I wish I had the reverse. Not sure when Hobie will start selling the 180 by itself, but I do know it's going to cost $700+ for it!
