This song, as Elton John has said, has helped people get sober...himself included !! how many songs can say the same ? Take away that fact and you are left with an amazing work of art that has stood the test of time ......... Kate Bush shines through all her work and as a fan i bow down to her ability to transcend both the here and now and deliver timeless works of art !!
This song continues to be relevant after all these years. Why does it seem that nothing has changed? Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush gave us all something beautiful to hold onto. Thank you!
i can't take it anymore. gonna stand on that bridge. whatever may come, whatever may go. such a beautiful yet sullen ballad for those whose reality is too much to bear. don't give up.
This song still brings me to tears. I used to run it through my head while working a job that made me want to just go and walk out the door. These many years later, thankfully I'm retired. I adore this version, but also saw Peter Gabriel sing it with Tracy Chapman at an Amnesty International concert, and that was wonderful, too.
This has to be one of the most wonderful songs in the world today, thank you Peter and Kate, may you keep writing songs for us all to enjoy. Kia Ora from New Zealand
I never want to return to that cold dark and lonely place. Listening to this takes me back there. Really sad to return but it's made me realise how far I've come with the unconditional love of Dee and a fellowship, From the bottom of my heart I love and thank you all xxx
my husband died jan. 3 2011.....and sooo adored this song...as we went through lots of tough times.....he always said...."everything works out....it has to".....and now i have the gift of being father and mother to my three beauties.....and i know he is with me.....it is just different.....he is with us......loss.......is not an option for me......
One the most important songs in my life..... So much strength and hope I find when I hear Kate Bush sing, it's like her voice just comforts the pain inside and makes it go away!
I've been on a Peter Gabriel kick the past few days, and this and Red Rain are constantly playing. Incredible song, it's amazing what music can do to us.
Peter Gabriel's poetry indeed is very deep and so are the clips he used to create. This have been so from the very early Genesis creations until now. One of the greatest musicians of England, a land of great musicians.
Beautiful song! If your ever feeling down, listen to the words in this song, it will lift you up.Well written and beautifully sung by Peter and Kate. Thankyou so much!
@Treknor This song has great significance for me as well. From the day my Father died, until the day of his funeral, I listened to this song everyday every chance I got. It allowed me to openly grieve for my Father in the privacy of my own home. I knew there were going to be a lot of eyes upon me. I was the child born "on the other side of the blanket". I carried myself with the deportment of a stoic woman. Treknor NEVER GIVE UP GOD IS THERE JUST FOR YOU!!!
Love Peter music. Dedicated to me and my husband, He was going to move this year and give up his family. Don't give up you still have friends. We love you Matt.
What a great song from great artists. Unfortunately when I was I did not get this idea of not giving up, I thought I did but I was wrong. I have learnt to not dwell on my mistakes but take advantage of my experience..
If you are ever down... lost and think all is lost or even at the point of suicide,,. this song can bring you back from the edge. It is so direct, touching, so deep. It could be the last peace in the raging storm. It can touch you and change you in so many if you open yourself up to it... to life.. to forgiveness, to love...to your path. Have faith... somewhere there is a place for you and somewhere there is someone for you. You are not alone. Many Blessings to Peter & Kate for this song.
My son gave up! he was only 23 years old with a new baby and a beautiful wife. He Hung himself one block away from his work. I miss him so so much. Please Don't Give up. Its the hardest thing in the world to kiss your son goodbye in a casket. please don't give up.
truly a beautiful song, wonderfully written, superbly crafted and excellently performed... above all else, the message moves one to keep on fighting and never giving up the fight, until the last breath has been drawn, and the last drop of blood has been taken... it transcends nations, races and generations...
heard this last night and remembered all the friends i have lost along the way, how many times i have thought of giving up (divorce, parents taken, heartache that never goes away, how close i was to ending it all but i am glad i did not sucumb to the angst of youth, life is too precious i am now in my fifties and have found my soulmate who guides me and supports me she is my rock and and i love her dearly. this song is as relavent today as it was in my youth thankyou for posting stay strong .XX
Things can change for the better so quickly. I was in a dep depression and someone came in to my life as a friend and pulled me out of the hole I was in. The best advice is to let others help you and resist the urge to shut yourself away.
This song wa so important to me during the 84/4 Miners Strike. It just sums up what it felt like to be part of a community who suddenly felt that they were the enemy within. It still hurst to listen to this. My marriage broke up after the strike. Not all the fault of the conflict -but a big part. 25yrs later, life is entirely different and better in a lot of respects but this still moves me to tears.
i love the symbolology in the lit candle going on to light another... sometimes the light comes from within but other times someone must bring the light to us
Until now i am not sure if not giving up when u lose what was important to you makes you stronger or just teaches you how to hide well your pain inside you but it is nice to know that you are not the only one, even if you are feeling alone. Thank you for sharing.
One of the most underappreciated songs that has ever been made. It rarely seems remembered by the masses and when you think of the rubbish that is made, that's a crying shame. While I now appreciate Kate's music at one time I didn't like her stuff, but even then, I loved this song.
I have allways love this song, but now i am out of work. And it hit me so strong. I dont give up to get a new job. Any one can lose his/hers job where ever good you are.
sends chills up my spine... "In this proud land, we grew up strong, we were wanted all along. I was taught to fight, taught to win, I never thought I could fail.... No fight left or so it seems..."
to everyone.....we all owe each other for being there for each other, be there for someone and hope someone is there for you........i owe so much 2 a lot of people and especially 2 my close friends and family........I'll never give up because I'll always be there for them......
This song always gives me the creeps, cold chills and tears in my eyes. I don't how he did,but this song is definitely a highlight in pop ballad history for me. A beauty. Best song ever, that's a hard one, there too many touchy songs out there.
Simply beautiful sentiment.. I just found this remembering how much I loved the song and how fitting it is - in this economy ... Thanks you for your wonderful testament.
I don't believe it - I actually like a song my son likes! We have very different taste in music, but this is a beautiful song, with a powerful message. Lots of difficult times in our lives, but we don't give up and it makes us stronger and more appreciative of those we love who stand by us.
As much as i would like to resist the idea of the burden of pain from past hurts. Your words are true, and as sad as it is to know that. I would prefer to forget; thus I make the effort to focus on something else instead...not an easy task at times.
You know, this song/video versions make me think of my parents as well. They had a very rough road. I lost them recently, love them dearly, and hope I carry that same strength with me. Worth so much more than any superficial "success," especially in these very tough times. I'm glad you wrote the comment about your dad. He sounds like a great man.
It's has helped me also. I have been having a difficult time these last last few days and knowing that something i did "filled you with bliss" has made me smile. So thank you!!
It's amazing the wide gamut of emotion and musical genres/atmospheres on this album. Bouncy and playful, like Big Time and Sledgehammer, all the way to surreal and experimental with Excellent Birds and Red Rain, and then the strongly emotional and thought-provoking, like with this song and Mercy Street.
As I posted on the version 1, this song saved my life. Peter Gabriel has touched my life so deeply so many times,,I love him and what he does,,no one can do the songs like he does,,,awesome!!
Im so sorry to hear about your friend. Depression grabs us all from time to time. Something that helped me when i was depressed a few years ago was this quote by Winston Churchill. "If your going through hell, keep going." It might be dark now, but there is light just around the corner. Don't give up!!!
I'd like to dedicate this song to my brother, Christian Bonifacio Tomás Byrom this song's message: "The basic idea is that handling failure is one of the hardest things we have to learn to do." Everything will be alright come 6/11/15 Don't give up!
As I posted on the version 1, this song saved my life. Peter Gabriel has touched my life so deeply so many times,,I love him and what he does,,no one can do the songs like he does,,,awesome!! When Peter sing "Got to waaaalk out of here, I can't taaake anymore, gonna staaand on that bridge, keep my haaaands down below, whatevvver may come, and whatevvver may go let rivers flow, let rivers flow" It is sung with such feeling tht it brings a tear to my eye everytime. Thank you for posting this. It is a valuable favorite.
Whenever I listen to this song, I am just speechless. The power in the lyrics, the vocals and the music is overwhelming. What a pairing of two great talents. A superb Classic. Bravo!
Although obviously made on a smaller budget, I think the alternative video where Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush hold each other tight is more emotionally gripping and stiring.
You have to have hope or we might as well curl up and die right now. Some things do leave a deep scar and cause pain years later but it is up to us to make what we can of the opportunities that come our way. We don't have to forget, just move on; that's just life.
DEDICATED TO MY BEAUTIFUL WIFE WHO IS GOING THROUGH THE DIFFICULT TIMES ......DON'T GIVE UP BABES YOU STILL HAVE US AND WE LOVE AND BELIEVE IN YOU..........
The words in this song is so appropriate for the Queensland Floods Disaster! I wish i had footage, Brisbane is about 45min drive, from where we, we were very lucky not to get hit by the floods!.Thanks for the post!. from Australia.
This video is much better than the orignal. It gets it right. I love the the water flowing. I'm going to stand on that bridge keep my hands down below. Whatever may come and whatever may go that river's flowing. Too true. The river still flows.
There are many more reasons to stay the course; yet, I too struggle with the ideation and the urge is sometimes very strong. Then little things trigger me however reluctant i feel...to not give up...Thank you for your post.

There is nothing I can pay or say enough on this earth to deserve to ever listen to that voice again.
