    Making an Overly Complicated Leather Keychain
    Sometimes it's really nice to make an upscale version of a simple leather craft item. When we try out new techniques, we like to do it on smaller leather items like keychains and key fobs - it allows us to try out new things and assess the results a lot more quickly than on larger projects!
    This leather keychain is a bit more complicated than it needs to be. We made this leather keychain with vegetable tanned leather, and while you could absolutely just cut the main piece and install the snap without any stitching we wanted to go a bit further. On our leather keychain we cut a smaller structure piece and sandwiched it between the exterior and liner of the leather keychain. We molded the leather to provide some really cool dimension, then we used a saddle stitch to put it all together.
    We used our own custom trim on this piece, with a plated brass button concho and our signature split rings - however any button or concho works well with maybe a nice solid brass split ring from japan :)

    Hello Folks. Very impressive result. Would you mind advising me where I might be able to organise some signature conchos like you have and the split rings as well. Many thanks Ian. PS I do enjoy watching you videos.

    That's probably the most beautiful piece I've seen you make. The texture on your custom snap is air tight. Pretty flawless all around.. You don't seem like a regular fellow.. They typically have poor taste. What happened to you to make you a freak..? Something anti-normie brewing in there..

      Corter Leather But men typically don't have such a pristine sense of taste.. The craft is air tight, but the creative vision is the real magic. No regular hard leg could execute the brand so flawlessly. Haven't seen so much as a pinky toe out of line.. and I'm damn jealous :)

    Overly complicated? Meh....maybe, but KICKIN end result. I gave up tracing patterns onto leather in favor of using my laser to very lightly tattoo it onto the leather (if the project is small enough to fit in the bed of my Glowforge). I still prefer to hand cut over laser cutting (too much char and it stinks), but I don't mind letting a machine trace the pattern for me. Cricut Maker is good for that too.

    • @Corter
      @Corter  5 років тому

      that's an interesting method! I looked into a laser cutter a looooong time ago, back when even the reps had no idea if using one on leather was possible - I often think it'd be real great to have for sampling these days, but just haven't gotten around to doing the research on the modern ones. Last time I looked into them they cost as much as a new car and required professionally installed venting with holes drilled through exterior walls 😂

    • @Corter
      @Corter  5 років тому +1

      can't get the right shape to hug the edge of the leather with a pencil sharpener so we do it with a knife, but would 100% be open to using a sharpener should you happen to be a pencil sharpener engineer and can build us one that makes the right lead profile
