I agree with the other guys, that this is best explanation of the game. We have it from some time we love it but we were not certain about the rules...now I have everything clarified....
Great job! Super clear and very fancy edits. :) Just got this game today and was so impressed by how quick we picked it up and how quick yet interesting a single game was. (we left out the mosquito and ladybug that came with the Carbon edition.) Also so happy with not only how classic the all Black & White pieces are but how compact it is with its carrying case. Me and my gaming pal are all excited to find a game we dont feel like complete nerds playing in public in a coffee shop or bar.
"Hive" just refers to all connected pieces that make up the "board". The color of the individual pieces doesn't matter. There's only one Hive all the time, since all pieces have to be touching.
Maybe you can answer this question for us. Can a spider more into a space that it cant natural slide into in its 3 turns? Since, after all, a spider can climb into tricky spaces.
@Rich711: No, it can’t. No hive piece is allowed to slide into physically ‘impossible’ spaces. Only pieces that can climb or jump are able to get into these spaces, and the spider in Hive can’t climb. It is somewhat analogous to the knight in chess.
Sorry I know this was 10 years ago, but in the video at the end, the ant slides into a closed space, I know the rules for the ant is that it can go anywhere, so does this include enclosed spaces? I’m assuming only other bugs that can are beetle and grasshopper?
@@liampickup07 Haha, nice to see a reaction to a comment 10 years later. The ant in the final move does not move into an enclosed space, though. A space is only enclosed for ants if they can’t physically fit between two pieces. A so-called “gate” is a position where two pieces are standing corner to corner 1 field apart. No piece can move through a gate. Here is an example for such a gate. The ant couldn’t move further in from the left because the piece can’t physically slide through the gate. @@liampickup07 You’re very welcome! Yes, Hive really is an awesome game. Have lots of fun playing it! It’s easy to learn but hard to master, and it has a lot more depth than meets the eye. Especially if you also have the Mosquito, Pillbug, and Ladybug that were later added to the game.
I think I understand the gate but why does this not apply to the queen? He said the queen is trapped but looks like she could slide out. Another person commented that the queen is trapped if she’s one tile away from being blocked, but I didn’t see that anywhere in the rules.
Hi Mark, Thanks for the video! Most helpful. at the 20 second mark in your video, what video game is this music from? It has been driving me crazy for years! I hope you can help and thank you in advance!
Hi there, What happens if both opponents bees are covered by a beetle and surrounded fully by other bugs. It would get to the point where no one could move at all? Is their rules to prevent this?
Whoever surrounds the queen first is the winner. :) But, if the movement of one piece causes BOTH queens to be surrounded, then the game ends in a draw. Also, covering your opponent's queen does not prevent them from moving their pieces. If for some reason neither player can place a new piece or make a movement (which is rare), then the game ends in a draw.
Trying to figure this game out. So in the beginning you say that we cant have our color touching the other team's color. But in the end they do just that and how can you surround the other queen without touching it? I know im missing something here, i dont pay attention well, heh. Is it only the first few moves that i cant touch the opposite color?
I just don't get the Hive Rule part, can you have more than 1 hive? or does your Queen make up the the hive? What if I had 2 groups of 3 Blacks tiles in 2 different places, does this mean I have 2 Hives? and therefore cant move either of the 2 middle black pieces from each of the hives?
All of the white and black pieces combined form a single hive. So all of the pieces in play must form a contiguous route from end to end. A move that would break the hive into two different chunks separated by a gap is illegal. This is a fundamental part of the rules and a big part of the strategy since one bug can trap another using the geometry of the hive knowing the other bug can't move away without breaking the hive.
I love your oldskool sounds that sounds like my childhood video games :)
Love the gauntlet theme music... brings back memories :)
Love that this is so quick and so thorough. Thank you!

This was super helpful! I found the rules included with the game to be rather confusing and not explaining too well. But this helped a lot!
Great video! Both entertaining and elucidating.

it should be said that you can't move the queen if its one piece from being trapped

Bought this game around 3-4 years ago, it's so much fun sadly doesnt have large player base

Disclaimer: not an insect

When you put a new piece down it can’t touch the opposite color, when moving it can
So is the spider inferior to all other pieces?
Thanks mark
Oh you mean the mini game?
Is this Hive, or Hive Pocket (with smaller tiles)?
I just don't get the Hive Rule part, can you have more than 1 hive? or does your Queen make up the the hive? What if I had 2 groups of 3 Blacks tiles in 2 different places, does this mean I have 2 Hives? and therefore cant move either of the 2 middle black pieces from each of the hives?

Yes he can.

Great video. Great Voice. Handsome too. :)
spiders are arachnids, not insects
i really dont understand the difference between the ant and the spider. It seems like the spider is just a worse ant ...
Well yeah, but it can surprise your opponent because most people don’t look at them
Who is suppose to remember all these rules ???
How do you play anything not remembering the rules ?
In Minecraft
would rather just play chess

LOL, how wrong are you. They're small. They have six legs. INSECTS.
but they are not insects lol the are arachnids. How old are you little boy?
