    5:20 why cant the white bettle hop off the black queen and win?

  • @skeeterarnold9189
    @skeeterarnold9189 Рік тому

    We just discovered Hive recently and have run into a couple of situations that we cannot find in the rules.
    1: When a beetle is on top of another piece, can another beetle top the first?
    2: When a “black” beetle is on top of a white piece that spot is now considered black so the white can no longer spawn there. But can the black now spawn there?
    We have been playing as (no) to the first and (no) to the second.

    • @PlayHiveLikeaChampion
      @PlayHiveLikeaChampion  Рік тому +3

      1) Yes Beetles (and Mosquitos moving like Beetles) can stack atop any stack no matter how tall it is. (When playing with the Mosquito, it is possible to have a stack seven pieces high!)
      2) For all spawning purposes, the color of the stack is the color of the top piece. If, for example, a Black Beetle is atop the White Queen then a Black piece can spawn directly next to the stack (assuming of course that there are no other adjacent White pieces). This actually has a name, the Direct Drop.
      PS - Welcome to Hive! If you have not done so, please check out the website www.BoardSpace.net. The Hive implementation there correctly applies all of the official Hive rules. (The only difference is that the Tournament Opening Rule is applied at BoardSpace, where it is not an official rule for casual play.)
      PPS- thanks for watching and commenting!

      Thank you for such a quick reply and wow… “Direct Drop” that seems SO over-powered, but 🤷‍♂️.

      @@skeeterarnold9189 The Direct Drop is very powerful. That is why one must defend it against it at all times. BUT, sometimes if you count moves correctly, you can allow a Beetle Cover + Direct Drop and still win.

    Can someone explain to me what he means by "That's not the goal. That's just how you win." This isn't Pee Wee Softball where the only goal is to have fun. The goal of every board game is to win.

    • @PlayHiveLikeaChampion
      @PlayHiveLikeaChampion  3 роки тому +4

      Too many beginning players begin surrounding the opposing Queen as soon as possible.
      But if you watch the top players, they will spend more time doing other things like setting up a good defense and controlling the opponent's pieces before seeking to surround the enemy Queen.
      So early in the game, the goal is not surrounding the opposing Queen. But late in the game, that is how you win.
      The preliminary moves early (which may or may not include direct attacks on the Queen) will lead later to the surrounding of the Queen and then victory.
      I hope this helps. And thanks for watching and commenting!
