    Modern family declined over time like any other sitcom. It's not rocket science.
    Frankly 5 seasons of almost consistent quality sitcom is a pretty good record for a show.

    "Under Pressure" is one of the best episodes in the show. You probably did not relate to it. Most academically inclined teens "who don't really care about that test" but actually studies for it and aces it, are the ones who relate to it the most. Their parents don't force them to study, which is the same as Alex's situation, but they feel tremendous pressure. These type of kids are the most insecure ones so that's why they have big "ego," a fake one they created to cover up their weaknesses

      Same thoughts. That episode was the best for me, too. Maybe because I'm a Psychology Major back in college and I loved how accurate the counselor was being portrayed. Aside from that part, the rest of the episode were wholesome and heartlifting.

    47:08 They added Joe because a sitcom doesn't become a real sitcom unless someone has a baby inside the main cast of the show. It's almost like a trope that every sitcom has to go through (Fresh Prince, Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Full House, Brooklyn 99, The Office, Parks and Rec, TBBT).

      @@kkinthewheelchair3049 And it makes sense for most of the other shows on this list. Because for Full House Jesse & Rebecca just got married, so of course they would want to start their own family with kids, it's not that hard to believe. And same thing applies to the other shows with characters as married couples (The Office, Parks and Recreation, The Big Bang Theory, etc.). Also if an actress is pregnant in real life, then of course they got to work it in a live-action show.

  • @goncalomartins3297

    I think their worst mistake was inconsistency. Especially with Claire: one episode she loves her kids and wants them to be with her; the next, she feels smothered by them and wants them out of the house. Or she wants to work and be an independent woman, and the next minute she wants to quit and live a simple stress-free life. It hurt her character because they seemed completely different people episode-to-episode but also the story as you could never follow why was she acting that way. The most glaring example is she quitting the closet-family business so she could relax but then applying to the organising company job. I love this show, but, yeah, I agree the latter seasons were very far quality-wise from the first ones

      Ok so these replies didn't need to be so passive aggressive to the original poster lol
      I get the op's points & I can see why they made them.
      However it's actually more normal and realistic that in a fantasy world (like on TV) a mom could switch drastically between roles because most moms have desires to fill multiple roles. They want to be the perfect mom & they also want to be a successful career woman. In the show Claire is allowed to explore all of her desires more than your average person due to real world issues.
      Anyway I understand how it can feel overwhelming to have her character switch up so much... People didn't need to be so snotty to disagree with the op 😉
      People can have different opinions & perspectives... It's not a big deal.
      Have a wonderful day ❤️

      thats one of the few episodes actually about alex, and not about how the other main characters feel victimised by her. haley says in one of these scenes "everybody has their stuff" but throughout the show alex's stuff is barely talked about, always overshadowed by haley. i love haley's character but after season 5 its like half the characters stopped existing to make room for haley dating a million guys

  • @josabby474

    The first two seasons of the show were near perfection. It got weaker in seasons 3-5, but still had solid episodes.
    I felt like the reveal that Gloria had taken a drink that Jay meant for Sonia was the start of the writers crapping all over great character traits or growth for the sake of a joke. There was the season 2 Halloween episode where we had the beautiful moment where Jay talked about falling in love with Gloria just listening to her talk.Having her take Sonia’s drink and opportunity made Gloria seem like a terrible person and retconned a beautiful back story for the sake of a joke.
    They definitely tried to hard to be edgy with all the gimmick episodes in later seasons.

      Although I like seasons 1-7, I do admit that there were a lot of problems with those seasons. For instance the story of how Phil and Claire got together. In the beginning the show makes it clear that while they were in college, Phil got Claire pregnant (with Haley) and then they had to get married, all while Jay didn't approve of Phil. But then in season 1 it is revealed that while Phil was dating Claire, he was still trying to break up with his girlfriend Denise (played by Judy Greer). Plus when she was in college Claire dated and/or slept with a bunch of guys (like her professor and maybe her dean). Then in season 5 Haley tells her siblings that Phil was a huge nerd in college and asked out Claire many times (but she always rejected him). But after she shared one dance with him, she fell in love with him. But then immediately a minute later in that same episode it's revealed that dance only happened a few months after she got pregnant and they were living together. And when Jay was about to talk about that, baby Joe said Jay's name and everyone just forgot about that. Meanwhile I'm wondering what the heck is wrong with the writers. The story of how Phil & Claire got together makes less sense the more they talk about it. And most of that is because the writers spent way too much time using that story to tell dramatic jokes. Not to mention that in season 5 Phil got Claire pregnant in a car after a Duran Duran concert. Also Claire said she used to drink while she was pregnant.

      @@justinbryan6249 i think the thing haley tells the siblings about in season 5 was a lie so luke would go to dance class. also while claire and phil were discussing when the first fell in love they had to sort of had to follow that storyline so that luke still believes it. but other than that there's a lot continuity errors with their whole story

    Gonna be honest, Lily was my second favorite character. I thought she was hilarious and when she grew up she would be like a mix of old Claire and April Ludgate from parks and rec. But instead they completely forgot about her. I'm surprised you had anything at all to say about new Lily. They even have cam and mitch acknowledge in the show how little they know about her after she gets older, specifically this one scene where she's late for cheer practice and her parents are shocked to learn that their daughter is a cheerleader. It's like they knew they were doing nothing with her

    I honestly think that season 1-3 is some of the best written and acted comedy in the last 20 years. The dialogue and humor is so sharp and subtle. A couple of seasons later on it feels like a completely different show. Everything is so in your face and it suddenly feels like watching an episode of a regular sitcom like Big Bang, How I met Your Mother etc. The show originally felt like there was an actual camera crew following the life of these families... and later on it felt completely unrealistic with stupid arcs and silly situations.
    If I ever get asked (like anyone would...) which show has the biggest fall from grace, I'm not going to answer Dexter, Lost, Game of Thrones (which has gotten way too much crap for those last two seasons). I'm going to say Modern Family. Simply because of how extremely genius season 1-3 (maybe a bit of 4) was.

    I'm surprised you didn't pick up on this, but you know what MY problem with the later seasons was? The writers and showrunners clearly forgot they were writing for Modern Family and somehow thought they were still writing for Frasier. I'm not kidding. Manny somehow turned into Niles Crane and Jay, obviously, became Martin Crane, right down to obsessing over Eddie...errr... Stella. Sometimes they'd just turn Cam and Mitch into Frasier and Niles. If that wasn't bad enough, one episode's B plot blatantly recycles a Frasier episode. Remember the episode where they were all on the train and Cam and Mitch meet their favorite author, steal his manuscript to read it, point out that it's like some other famous work, causing the author to lose it, throw his manuscript out the window, and Cam and Mitch somehow walk themselves into thinking they did a service being the ones to point it out before literary critics did "saving him embarrassment?" The EXACT same thing as what happened in a Frasier episode!

      That's something that usually happens with writers and showrunners. Sometimes on purpose, but a lot of the time it's just out of habit. Had I not known that it wasn't the same group behind Frasier, I probably wouldn't have noticed until that complete reuse of an old Frasier episode. But if you knew that going in, it sticks out painfully. Of course, it was only really noticeable a few seasons near the end.

      I hated this show. It glamorizes child abuse especially with the Luke character and especially when he was a little boy. He drinks alcohol his mother didn’t take him to the hospital to check for organ damage, he is shot by bbs which are considered real bullets by the way, for a complete accident and when he say it was an accident but of course his alleged “mother” didn’t believe him of course because he’s a boy and that’s apparently the kind of shit that boys do, he’s stupid of course because he’s a boy and he’s mischievous I’m guessing because he’s constantly psychologically tortured by his sisters and therefore its probably a way psychologically speaking for him to survive. I agreed with a lot of your assessment especially with Cam. But I gotta say you’re off on Jay, Phil and Claire.
    Jay definitely didn’t come off as the generic old guy. Sure he had some cliches. But yeah he’s a Vietnam veteran who started a business from the ground up and like most boomers can be disillusioned with the modern world. He’s a 70yo acting like a 70yo. But even more to say by the end of the series he was a far more open character, he worked through a lot of the emotional stuntedness that stemmed from his relationship with his dad. He’s a character who was constantly learning from his mistakes and always trying to do better and be more comfortable in his own skin. By the end of the series he was able to openly express all of his feelings and always did his best to be the best dad and grandpa he could be.
    Phil really didn’t come off as stupid, sure his antics became more eccentric and he became a bit more oblivious. But from the very first episode of the show to the very end Phil was always the bumbling crazy dad who wasn’t amazing at catching social cues. If anything he was definitely one of the more consistent characters and I think many in the fandom would agree that he remained a favourite throughout.
    And Claire I think you gave the most harsh judgment. Claire is a complex and controversial character for sure but I think she was always going to come off as that. She originally started as the overworked, under appreciated housewife who clearly had to struggle with keeping a firm hand to maintain the house. But she did it and once she raised her kids confidently re-entered the workforce with their support. She didn’t in any way seem like a “girl-boss” corporate feminist type as you allude to, I think she was presented as someone who brought her toughness of a mom and her college education into being a successful business women. Nothing more nothing less. In my view she became a much happier and interesting character in the later seasons because of the freedom she got from her kids growing up. I’m surprised anyone would have seen her character in the later seasons as being cheap or unearned. If anyone had the right to be a little uptight it was Claire. But even if you didn’t like the character, Julie Bowen played all of it well and deserved all the praise she got for the role.

Except iasip executes this purposely and hilariously whereas modern family just kinda falls into a boring version

    27:55 How I feel about this season of Family Guy. The pacing is too slow not enough jokes.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 3 роки тому +7

      Family Guy is more of a case of a show that doesn't know what it wants to be anymore. They can't be the pop culture parody show, since Robot Chicken is essentially a show of cutaways. It can't be the shock humor show, we've all been desensitized and those jokes don't work when you see them coming. It can't be a social commentary show because it's hard to take a stance on something that they made a shock joke years earlier. So basically the only thing they haven't worn out (yet) is long, descriptive jokes, and those were barely funny in the first place.

    • @icecreamhero2375
      @icecreamhero2375 3 роки тому +4

      @@mightyfilm This latest season has been pretty lackluster with the exception of the Last no L ( that episode is a masterpiece), and Peterminator. The newest episodes barely have cutaways and I'm disappointed. The pacing also isn't as fast as its golden years. The jokes don't come as quickly as they used to. Compare the pacing of any episode from this season to an episode from season 4.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 3 роки тому +5

      Family Guy is a show that's betrayed by generations of viewers. When it started out, it was a firmly Gen X show, which explains the large number of pop culture cutaway gags and when they used to watch TV and comment on it. Then the adult swim rebirth gave them an audience that wanted more comedic sociopathy than references, and while they weren't slowly phased out, they were set aside. Not to mention that between when FG started and when [as] picked it up, more shows were trying to be FG. At one point it became less special, and I'll attest that again to Robot Chicken being FG cutaways, but as a series. So if you liked FG's pop culture parody, there was a show doing the same thing by one of the show's cast. The writers are fully aware that they aren't the big fish and haven't been in decades. One episode had a middle aged man telling his teenage son that the baby used to say "Victory is MINE!" when he was his age, and the teenage son says "I'm watching Rick and Morty." By comparison, The Simpsons and by extension South Park are basically like SNL, and at least have social commentary to keep them going. FG can't really do any of the things it used to, and it just comes off old and bland trying to be more like it's rebirth seasons. I'd say at least the Stewie and Brian adventure episodes have something to them, but other than that, it's hardly the show it used to be.

      @@mightyfilm I love Family Guy buy absolutely can't stand Rick and Morty or South Park. South Park is unfunny preachy and annoying. Instead of writing a story and filling it with jokes every episode is one overly long drawn out joke. Its like they pick a topic and repeat the same 1-3 jokes over and over for 20 minutes its dreadful. I despise Rick and Morty because its super boring and not funny in the slightest. Its just gore= funny. I dislike how all the characters are cynical and depressed all the time its grating. Rather than being wacky and fun it feels dreary. When I watch episodes I think so where's the joke? Beth and Jery going to space counseling and their hatred for each other is personified as monsters. This is funny because? I have no clue I'm just annoyed.

Not to mention that fact that his “mother” constantly and condescendingly talking down to him and about him with other People in front of his face with condescending implications of him being stupid and an out right awful evil Child. There a little warm moments every now and then with like and his “mother”, but of course little warm moments every once in a while don’t negate the Child Abuse.
