I was only 9 years old when John Lennon was taken from us. I only wish I could have met him... I have a strong connection with John... Thank you Elton for such a beautiful song...
one of those songs that is truly great and truly SAD...along with Tears In Heaven...2 of the saddest songs ever written...and 2 of my favorites of all time...Bravo! Thanks for the post!
This is such a beautiful tribute to John Lennon, but I wouldn't expect anything less. I was on my way to college when I heard on the radio he was shot. I immediately started to cry. Horrible day.
@@Carousel5883 I think worse because he was shot by a crazed fan. You didn't hear about things like that happening like now. Pl7s he was just coming back with a new album. If you ever get to NYC, go to Central Park and vidit Strawberry Fields. Princess Diana was a terrible tragedy. Definitely a Candle in the Wind. She was coming into her own, very confident, beautiful, compassionate. That was awful. MJ was very sad.
What a great tune. Elton John puts a lot of heart ❤️ into his 🎵 music. This must be one my favorite songs of his music. I was knocking but no answer. Hey hey Johnny would come out to play. Love this tune. This is one of my favorite songs by Elton John. It is so true to life. Especially when your partner passes away.
What is wrong with people? Garbage music these days get millions of views and this... 8,134? This is an epidemic... this true music is being neglected in favor of talentless schmucks plaguing our airwaves. John Lennon... RIP. Elton... keep being awesome and my favorite artist of all time!
Littel girls run the music world. They dont like DOWNER songs. They dont understand this song. Sorry..they like Pop Pablum. Elton released a LOT of that as well but this song is just too painful for the current soul less raised on American Idol crowd.
Yeah man it's true that classic, incredible artists are being cast aside for lesser pretenders to the throne. But history has a way of repeating itself and many ways music does too, not unlike fashion or other trends. These originals though - like Sir Elton for example, may never come around again. Can anyone reading this actually imagine another band as whimsical, original and influential as The Beatles ever happening again? Maybe instead of mourning our losses we should count ourselves lucky enough to have witnessed their greatness in our lifetimes👌🏼💙
The younger generations born after 1980 don't know any better. They think Pink, Britney, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, etc. is all that. A lot of it is cheap pop that doesn't hold a candle to older music. Shows like TRL and American Idol were targeted toward millennials. Most of TRL's guests were teen girls. It ran from Sept. 1998 to 2008 with Carson Daly to 2003. The host of American Idol is Ryan Seacrest, born the same year I was, 1974, who also took over AT40 from Kasem in Jan 2004. Kasem revived AT40 in March 1998 after hosting his own show from Jan 1989 on. Shadoe Stevens took over AT40 on Aug 13, 1988 and it ran to 1994. Kasem could not start a new show until Jan 1989. This song was Elton's tribute to the late John Lennon, a personal friend of his, who was shot in December 1980 by a deranged fan. I remember seeing it on MTV in 1982. I liked Casey Kasem's AT40 as well, and Empty Garden was on his show in the spring of 1982 several times. I like 70's and 80's music. But, I don't know if I could have listened to Casey count down hits from 1998-2003 because that was the same time period as Carson Daly TRL and stupid teen pop, rap, Latin music, and alt and punk rock.
Mike Stevenson how about music from mid 90’s onward sucks? I like music with synth and sax. Like 80’s. Not this teen pop garbage with repetitious backing tracks with a clap like beat.
beautiful. ive been working on a guitar cover version of this song, and its actually a surprisingly difficult vocal, you almost need 3 different vocal keys. that just gives me an extra appreciation for Elton john's talent
You are so right Jeff,I had to drop the song from my set list because I just can t get the ending right. I did nt want to change the key because to me that child like cry at the end emotionally makes the song.``Can`t you come out to play in your empty garden``.
This man sang Tribute to Lennon and Marilyn Monroe. Unbelievably good. What can Elton John not do? So much he has given in so many ways to music/ His 2023 Christmas song with Ed Sheeran is another example. He' s still got it
when my mom's husband gave the 1980 paper to my sister Cassie and she showed it to me I just dropped it and cried, then I played "Empty Garden " on the Piano
I was leaving my family's house 7am heading back to VSU and on the radio that dreadful day they John Lennon was killed in my city. And years later my CCNY friends didn't know that Elton wrote a song about 1 of the greatest Beatles. Can't u come to play in my empty garden 🎶 Johnnie. Rip John Lennon 🙏 😢 💔 😪 Dammmm. December 8th 1980 and I was 18 then. 500 miles away
Was Lennon's murder similar to Lincoln's assassination? Some dude shoots him in the dark and he never knew what hit him. Did Lennon's killer get life in prison or was he released at some point?
I hope they put him in gen pop I'm sure he's somebody's bitch I hope he got worse than beat up droppin' the soap by now I think that ass has no more feelin' to it😂😂😂
I cry every time I listen to this song. But I feel compelled to listen. One of my favorites.
Shithole @
it's probably your own inner pain crying to be released my friend...
I cry also if i be on Eltons Concerts and sometime playing Elton "Emty Garden, John Lennons" Song! R.I.P John! 😢
Elton said that he hasn’t performed this song much because it makes him too emotional and I can definitely tell why.
What a great song.
Easily one of Elton John's top 5 songs. Beautifully written & sung. About a tragic event
41 years ago, today... Wonderful tribute. Rest well, Johnny.
Love this song. Elton's voice was in top form here. Rest in Pease John Lennon.
I was only 9 years old when John Lennon was taken from us. I only wish I could have met him... I have a strong connection with John... Thank you Elton for such a beautiful song...
I was 10 & it really got too me , so sad
I was only born in 1985 but after listening to this beautiful song and watching documentary about his murder even I'm crying
8th grade...Holy Trinity...i couldn't go to class that day...i'll never forget...what a treasure this song is...
Such a beautiful song for a peaceful man. I still have the 45. RIP John and George.
I finally got the courage to listen to this song in full tonight! Its times like this I appreciate my sisters! They got me through this!
It's 41 years since I heard the news on that terrible night and it still breaks my heart. This song brings all the emotions back.
Elton John a musical genius. I can listen to anything he sings. From Your Song to now, an incredible talent.
one of those songs that is truly great and truly SAD...along with Tears In Heaven...2 of the saddest songs ever written...and 2 of my favorites of all time...Bravo! Thanks for the post!
thankyou elton, i listen to this song often, when i need comfort from this terrible tragedy
thirty eight years later still shocking.
Such an amazing and heartfelt tribute!
Nice one
Bernie Taupin's poignant words & Elton's heart stirring music..incredible tribute to John Lennon.
Really heartbreaking and beautiful.EJ was really sad at end of the video..he must have missed him so much..how he kept it together..such a pro
This is such a beautiful tribute to John Lennon, but I wouldn't expect anything less. I was on my way to college when I heard on the radio he was shot. I immediately started to cry. Horrible day.
I was born in 1985 so all I hear are stories. Was it as bad as when Princess Diana or MJ

A truly amazing gardener who our world is much worse without.

People who think their favorite music needs to be everyone's favorite music are irritating.
Mike Stevenson how about music from mid 90’s onward sucks? I like music with synth and sax. Like 80’s. Not this teen pop garbage with repetitious backing tracks with a clap like beat.
this is a great song and probably a very hard song for Elton to sing. probably one of the saddest he sung.

A pop masterpiece for sure. The legend that is Elton John. Amazing track. Heart felt.
One of the best songs of music history, by one of the best musicians of music history.
This man sang Tribute to Lennon and Marilyn Monroe. Unbelievably good. What can Elton John not do? So much he has given in so many ways to music/ His 2023 Christmas song with Ed Sheeran is another example. He' s still got it
He also sang "Skyline Pigeon" at Ryan White's funeral service.
Elton always struggles with his emotions in this song, he's upset in the final parts of the song. One of his best songs and sadly rarely played live
Omg hes vulnerability..just makes me want to hold until he breakdown and cry.
Beautifull Song!
My 2nd favourite song by Elton. I get chills each time I hear it. I wonder when he started his policy of only playing it at Madison Square Gardens.
I didn't know that one!..
I've been knocking too my friend. Since 8th december 1980.
Another masterpiece by Elton.
Melhor música de todos os tempos
Almost 40 years later and this song still
Beautiful song.
This is my favorite performance of Empty Sky. The words are so beautiful and heart-felt.
You mean "Empty Garden", right? He does have a song (and album) called "Empty Sky". Just FYI...
The photo of John's corpse broke me!
Here after two years and I still got jumpscared
So freaking beautiful😢❤
I wish John would have joined Elton in 1980 on stage, but he did meet him at a party afterwards...
This one always reminded me of Curtains from Fantastic
esta entre minhas musicas favoritas simplesmente demais
AWESOME!!
awesome live version just afetr he wrote it.. , i agree, ONLY 33k hits, should have been 4 mill by now
Makes me tear up
Thanks Elton.
when my mom's husband gave the 1980 paper to my sister Cassie and she showed it to me I just dropped it and cried, then I played "Empty Garden " on the Piano
miss john
Belíssima canção adoro bons tempos linda homenagem a John Lennon
Beautiful
Beautiful/ and so sad
true talent I love Elton John!!!
1 dislike...1 insect
Wow, just what the killer would say .
john lennon lives with us forever the best of the best
I was 20 years old, a freshman in dental school. We could t get our heads around it.
Was it as bad as when MJ died? I was born in '85 so always wondered if it was the same
It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain...very true!
Perda muito grande para música, um grande talento, nós brasileiros sentimos sua morte até hoje.
I just can't !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was leaving my family's house 7am heading back to VSU and on the radio that dreadful day they John Lennon was killed in my city. We're the same age and I was on my way to college to in NJ. 💔
My son was born that day. He likes trump. Can this song get any sadder?
Was Lennon's murder similar to Lincoln's assassination? Some dude shoots him in the dark and he never knew what hit him. Did Lennon's killer get life in prison or was he released at some point?
well his killer is actually still rotting in prison almost 40 years later.
And he will hopefully never get out!
I hope they put him in gen pop I'm sure he's somebody's bitch I hope he got worse than beat up droppin' the soap by now I think that ass has no more feelin' to it😂😂😂
The only reason I can think of for giving this a dislike is that it is so sad.
Nice one John alll ways ...all ways
i know i´m just a brazilian drunk, but i belive in love and i be,live in the real love
Like Gandi , MLK , JFK , RFK and then JL anyone who wanted better for the everyman and Peace - Murdered .
Bernies best
Chorus played at half track but great performance anyway
Not live
Rarity as Elton finds this song dedicated to his good friend John Lennon too painful to perform.
Great song but there is no way this is “live”!
It's definitely live. Elton is truly that amazing.
Shame they showed the scum who shot him.
they did that to show the "insect" that damaged so much grain. Bernie Taupin Referring to him as an insect is brilliant. Rot in Hell Mark Chapman.
You got that right...why publicize the insect?
Awesome why is the loser in the video wtf ! 😡
What Mark Chapman? I was thinking the same
John Lennon. GOOD RIDDANCE!
Let's hope your joining him tonight knobhead 👌👌👌
what's wrong with you?
