As a sufferer of Depression while listening to one of my favorite songs (Empty Garden), It helps me to fight it and try to bounce back again. Open the door and go outside and realize the day isn't that bad after all.

I know Elton and Bernie were huge John Lennon fans. Good tribute.
I was 11 years old in 1981 when someone bought the Beatles Red album into the house. I remember listening to it and being amazed that every track was just brilliant, and it was a double album, WOW, for that years x-mas all i wanted was the Blue album. Another double, where every song was just incredible. That just made me fall in love with the Beatles and their solo work. I now have everything they've ever released. All of Lennon's albums, including the 4 box Anthology, Live Peace In Toronto, Live In New York City, John Lennon Acoustic, which has the chords on inner sleeve so i've learned some good Lennon songs. I have all of George Harrison's albums including Wonderwall Music, which is a really good listen. I don't have Electronic Sounds, but i don't think many people have, i've heard it on UA-cam and that was enough for me, but i have all of his solo albums. I have 15 solo McCartney albums, his masterworks, Ram, Band On The Run, Venus and Mars, Tug Of War, Flaming Pie, Chaos and Creation in the backyard, some of his really good albums, McCartney, Flowers In The Dirt, Wings Over America, i even have Wildlife which i like, Red Rose Speedway which i don't rate, but the bonus cd is brilliant. I have Thrillington Ram ffs. I have Ringo's 2 best albums, 1973s classic Ringo and the following years Goodnight Vienna.
That Red album didn't just lead me onto the greatest band ever, but a love for a lot of '60s music, The Rolling Stones from Aftermath to Some Girls, Bob Dylan all of his apart from his 'Sinatra trilogy', The Who A Quick One through to The Who By Numbers including Live At Leeds, Live At Hull and The Kids Are Alright album. The Kinks Face to Face, Something Else, Village Green Preservation Society and The Ultimate Kinks. All of The Doors albums, All of Simon and Garfunkel's albums, Love Forever Changes, 3 Velvet Underground albums, Donovan albums, Jimi Hendrix, The Byrds, Them, Van Morrison, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young, The Band, Traffic, Cream, Pink Floyd, Curtis Mayfield, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Syd Barrett, Roy Harper, Small Faces, Buffalo Springfield, Moody Blues, Cat Stevens, Jefferson Airplane, The Zombies, Mama's and Papas, The Yardbirds, I have so many albums by all of these artists and many more, all because of a Red Double album that really touched the soul of an 11 year old lad who had nothing I the way of possessions, but had love from his now long passed away beautiful parents 🙏🙏

I remember the morning my dad woke me up to tell me to come watch the news. He knew that I loved the Beatles. I saw my dad get choked up 5 times, Kennedy, King, Kennedy, my brother passing, and John. He couldn't tell me himself. He had to let me see the news on TV. He didn't like all of his music but loved Imagine. My dad was a Vietnam veteran. He was also a libertarian.
He respected John and his stance against war.

What a sad story.. Yet such a moving tribute to one of the greatest song writers in the modern world. I have to concur with the fact that line about how much damage one insect can do is precious... Being a gardener of sorts myself. This song makes me cry.. Can't you come out to play.... I have always loved this song and I know that for many of you out there losing a beloved pet can be as devastating as losing a human being. We just lost our beloved pig, and our hearts are broken every time we walk by his empty hut. Just like Wilbur from Charlotte's web, he was remarkable stupendous and extraordinary. He was humorous and a real spitfire. Empty Garden is a beautiful song and really speaks to the emptiness and profound sadness that we all feel when losing a loved one, no matter human or animal.

I'm sure you're a very nice person but I'm sorry to say what I comes to this song you missed the beat big time on this one first of all do you know who is written for.? Elton John wrote this in memory of John Lennon. they were very close and Elton took it very very hard. So he wrote this song for himand he plays it every year every since John Lennon died .mr. Lennon has been coined as having the biggest standing ovation from a crowd of any music legend in history when he did a performance at Madison square garden where you'll go and he got back together I know John was president of course. Thank goodness some people did have technology to record this and again it was the biggest loudest ovation any musical persona has ever received. If you listen to the song in this context with a close friendship between the two you will understand more and it is very much not amusing nor does it amuse meeting

I was looking up at the tree and thinking that my life was so good. All of a sudden the news flash was on the Television saying " John Lennon has been shot and killed in front of the apartment building he lived in". I was horrified...My brother turned me into a fan of the Beatles and John's solo music as well by playing it all the time. This song is just Wonderful.

Absolutely a stunningly beautiful tribute to Lennon from long time friends Taupin and Elton. Having said that, I do believe Lennon's best work was behind him at the time of his death. It was the same as George Harrison. From the time Lennon was murdered to the time Harrison died of cancer, George only had one more hit single and with it a fairly decent album. I personally can't see how Lennon would have had the drive and determination to keep up with the longevity and success that McCartney had and still has. McCartney is and was a workaholic and Lennon and Harrison, in their own way, weren't.

I'd _love_ to know everything about Elton and Bernie's process. The music and lyrics are both so well-crafted. How does that happen?
Elton must write the music first, then...what? Does he have any lyrical theme in mind? Did he start with just a few words? Maybe he had an inspiration for "Johnny -- can you come out to play?" and Bernie took it from there.
It seems so difficult and very tricky for a collaboration come out with so much single-minded strength. Please! How do you do it?

That night, I was taking a nap. I had a dream where the scene was a rainy NYC street. There was a guy lying on the pavement and another guy standing over him. A bystander said to the guy, "Do you know what you've done?!" I woke up and turned on the TV. They broke into whatever show to say that JL had been shot. Days later, I heard on the news that someone who had witnessed the murder had said to Hinckley, "Do you know what you just did?!" I live about 60 blocks south of the Dakota--and I saw the whole thing.

Such a beautiful song. Of course, it's about John Lennon. And, I always think......if he had stayed in England, I bet he would still be alive because they don't have such stupid gun "rights" like we have here. I have read that Elton rarely plays this live because he can barely make it through it, it tears him up.

The song title "Empty Garden" may refer to the empty venue, or to the huge pile of flowers left behind by mourners outside the Dakota, John Lennon's home in New York City, near the site where he was assassinated. RIP.

    What happened here
As the New York sunset disappeared
I found an empty garden among the flagstones there
    Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And now it all looks strange
It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain
    And what's it for
This little empty garden by the brownstone door
And in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more
    Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And we are so amazed, we're crippled and we're dazed
A gardener like that one, no one can replace
    And I've been knocking
    But no one answers
    And I've been knocking
    Most all the day
    Oh, and I've been calling
    Oh, hey hey Johnny
Can't you come out to play
    And through their tears
Some say he farmed his best in younger years
But he'd have said that roots grow stronger if only he could hear
    Who lived there
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
Now we pray for rain and with every drop that falls
We hear, we hear your name
    And I've been knocking
    But no one answers
    And I've been knocking
    Most all the day
    Oh, and I've been calling
    Oh, hey hey Johnny
Can't you come out to play
    And I've been knocking
    But no one answers
    And I've been knocking
    Most all the day
    Oh, and I've been calling
    Oh, hey hey Johnny
Can't you come out, can't you come out to play
Johnny, can't you come out to play in your empty garden
Johnny, can't you come out to play in your empty garden
Johnny, can't you come out to play in your empty garden
