The A-Gon trade may not have worked out for the Padres, but it did work out for the Padres GM. Jed Hoyer targeted Rizzo in that deal because he was involved in scouting him as the Assistant GM in Boston. Then Hoyer left the Padres for the Cubs less than a year after the A-Gon trade, and his first move with the Cubs was to re-acquire Rizzo.

Life long Dodger fan and Gonzo is still the jersey I wear whenever catching a Dodger game. Was perfect for LA but had he not got injured in ‘17 , we may have not called up Bellinger!! Glad he works for the Dodger TV crew now

    • @cesarcabrera97
      @cesarcabrera97 9 місяців тому +3

Bellinger was called up before A-Gon hit the IL, and he was playing LF before moving to 1B to cover A-Gon; the way Belly was hitting meant that he was staying in the roster regardless of A-Gon's health. However, Belly's success did make A-Gon expendable after the season, so he was traded, and coincidentally, it opened to door for Max Muncy to be called up the following season.

Red Sox fan here, I was initially ecstatic about the Gonzalez trade, but he didn't quite meet my lofty expectations. While he did put up good numbers, it became apparent (as you said in the video) that he wasn't a great fit in the video. A defining moment for personally was a crazy extra-inning game against Baltimore in 2012 where the Orioles ran out of pitchers and needed to have a position player pitch. Gonzalez came up in a huge spot against him, and...struck out. Just felt like to me at that point like he wasn't a dependable clutch hitter like Ortiz and that perhaps the pressure was getting to him.
Nice video by the way, and I like the Mario music at the end!

Cause I feel like the sport doesn't pay homage enough to players who had a sneaky good shortened prime. He still had plenty of power when he connected and could hit the ball, but just seemed to try too much and get away from his approach. I think he left a good 50+ HR and 100 walks on the table with the Dodgers simply from not taking a few more pitches.

It seems to be a combination of:
    1. Agon being a great-but-not-trancendant slugger at a non-premium position who entered the league during the Moneyball revolution. It was a conflicted time in terms of front office philosophy, and Agon was the type of player who could be simultaneously overvalued and undervalued by the league depending on their adoption of "nerd math" vs the good old fashioned eye test.
    2. Luck of the draw in landing with Florida, Texas, and SD early in his career. Marlins were in pump and dump mode en route to the 2003 WS, 2004 was the end of the Rangers Arod era, and the Padres were a mid market team who never had a chance of being able to afford a player of his caliber beyond the arbitration years.
His mega contract with Boston made him the inevitable salary hot potato, so his subsequent trades to and out of LA aren't much of a surprise. As much of a fan favorite he was with the Dodgers, he was never going to have the same emotional cache of home grown players of that era like Kershaw or Ethier.

March 2012 the dodgers are purchased by the current ownership. June 2012 they trade for Hanley Ramirez and August is the 250 million dollar trade. Basically since then the franchise hasn’t looked back. They went on to sign Ryu and Greinke in December of 2012 and got their local tv deal in January 2013

My counter argument is that he actually didn’t get traded that much.
    Padres to Boston
    Boston to LA
    LA to NYM.
    Career end.
    That’s not that much.

yeah its weird that he's including trades during his time as a prospect/rookie. he only got traded 3 times as an established MLB player. it really isnt that much.
Also, he went from LA to ATL but they released him 2 days later and signed with the Mets in the offseason later on.

We were told in Boston that AG was traded because he didn't like playing in Boston and wanted to go back to the West Coast. Maybe some truth but probably not the main reason.

He was always underrated playing in SD who at the time wasn’t the power franchise they are today. The Boston trade was a big deal at the time and AGon was excellent there but in the end they never won anything with him.

Its hard to include prospect trades as actual career trades. I understand they're still player moves, but its probably best to consider those once a player is somewhat established.

Not in the caliber of Sheff or Gonzo but both were traded it seems every other year Todd Zeile and Hard Hittin' Mark Whiten. Both good ballplayers. Oh and one more Lonnie Smith seemed to be the Will Smith of now that would get traded and his team would march through the playoffs and go to the World Series either that year or the next.

This is a bit misleading. He wasn't a superstar traded 5 times. He was traded twice as a superstar, both times due to financial issues, not performance. He was a promising prospect when traded by the Marlins (who would have traded him much sooner if he were in fact a superstar) and the Rangers. The Padres of his time were having an "everything must go" fire-sale every other season under Werner and Moores prior to Seidler, and Gonzales was but one of many stars they shipped off during that era.
Red Sox didn't want to trade him. The Dodgers had coveted Gonzales for quite some time for both his superb play and attraction to the Latino community. The new ownership had a lot of damage to repair with the fanbase after Frank McCourt ran the iconic franchise into the ground, and Gonzales was seen as the ideal star for rebuilding trust. The Red Sox very, very much wanted to unload the disastrous Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett contracts that no teams wanted to take, making them all but impossible to trade. Dodger's new ownership had plenty of money, so the trade was basically absorbing the other two contracts to get the guy they really wanted, and sending away a star player who they would have liked to keep was the cost for the Red Sox to unload him.
He was barely able to play due to health when the Dodgers shifted him to the Braves who released him. Again not a superstar being traded.
