  • We love our Winnebago Travato and have no issues with it…. But sometimes changes in life mean you need to made a change in your RV… our grand kids are getting older and they can travel with is, but we would need a bigger RV to make this happen.
So w made a trip to the summer Tampa RV show to look around. This show is much smaller show than the super show in January but there was still a nice selection.
    Hmmm… what should we do??

I'd get a used tear drop! You don't need it for every trip, and Ellie is great for what you are doing now! Wait till you're 60 and then look at something bigger. Who knows, you might have 8 grandkids by then!

I’m with Jason…. Definitely a Class A. I wouldn’t want the kids in a separate trailer out by themselves. That’s just me. They get sick, they need to go to the bathroom, you can’t trust crazies out there…..

I agree. With the way things are today, having precious cargo, which are your grandkids, NEVER have them sleep in a separate compartment from you. Anything can happen. Submitted respectfully ❤

From what you have voiced on your needs in the past, Ellie makes most sense to keep and if you bring the grandkids maybe the teardrop or a tent. The way you travel it seems like Ellie fits best. I personally loved our travel trailer and the space it provided. Then all we had to do is unhook the truck and exploring we’d go.

Throw a tent in your van with some sleeping bags and the kids can go with you. Walmart, less than $200. Love camping in the Adirondacks for almost 60 years.❤ love you guys.

We live just south of the Adirondacks!
I actually was thinking tue same thing, throw a tent in the van! Maybe a different option if you had the grandkids full time, but too big an investment for just a once in a while!

Do the teardrop and keep your van. The Travato 59K is great when it’s just the two of you and then when you want to take the grandkids you can pull the teardrop! Best of both worlds!

    • @Karen.cook424

Yep I was coming on to suggest the same thing! Your van doesn’t have an attachable screen room option does it?

  • @BillMattson
    @BillMattson 3 місяці тому +3

I remember when you had a bigger camper..... Are you forgetting the difficulty with parking!!!! Elly with a small tow behind Gives you the best of both worlds. You have the flexabilty to just run elly when its just you two but your can hook up when you have the kiddos. The next best option would be a tow behind because you could park and then use the truck to explore, but that has drawbacks. IMO....

  • @TWSmith42

That was fun. Thank you. I think the little teardrop best meets your use case of occasionally needing the room for a couple of guests.

Check if there's a travel trailer that is light enough to work with your van. The grand kids aren't old enough to sleep alone. With tables that drop down and fold out couches, that could work fine for little kids. You could check out used ones. How much can your van pull?

Was fun shopping along with you and appreciate hearing the sobering reality of todays current oversaturated RV market with high interest.
My childhood family camped frequently in the 60’s/70’s with a camper. My brother and I always slept in a tent and we so enjoyed it over sleeping in the camper with our folks.

For me, I'd be skeptical of that enormous full wall slide on that Class A long term. The tear drops are so cute, would be fun with the grandkids. Seems like a good solution to something you only need sometimes.

You nor I would leave small children to sleep by themselves in a teardrop? Therefore, it would need to be a unit that sleeps everyone! Otherwise, you could get a 2-4 man tent with blow up mattresses?

  • @EnjoyRaboy

Class A sounds amazing, but financially a small used, inexpensive, teardrop is the best idea. With a tear drop, at least you can keep it at your home base when your kids are not with you. Or maybe just wait, maybe it’s not the right time yet, you are still young. Being that we have a travel trailer with a truck, honestly, sometimes it gets tiring to tow something. Whatever decision you guys make, I doubt it would be a bad decision since you compliment each other so well lol!

Just remember if you purchase a drivable RV, you’re gonna be stuck where you stop at you won’t have a vehicle unless you’re pulling something to drive around town. I just finished watching the rest of the video that was a very good decision to hold off specially for the information you provided for resale.

I recommend a used teardrop or popup. Something small that the grands would love. They'll be thrilled to have their own space. Go USED! Pre 2020.....it will be better built than the later ones. You'll still have Ellie for your own travels but options for the grandkids. And.....if your kids families want to go....talk to them about getting their own or tents! Our kids enjoy camping with us occasionally, however, they don't camp often so, we bought our Compass (like the Gemini you had.) It's great.....it's big enough that 6 can sit in there and talk.....4 can eat comfortably, and 2 adults, and 2 littles (we only have one little grand) can sleep. Parents/grown kids bring their own tents! :) The majority of the time it's just the two of us. No sense have larger than needed for the rest of the time. Jason....that Class A is nice.........however, that Van will be so much easier to get into great spaces.

Look at the class C the kids love the over bunk and I feel they are safer and easier to bug out, its also like a truck and easy to drive that’s why they rent so many lol and when it’s raining outside you just put it in park no need to be out there setting stuff up immediately, we love the ability to just walk in the back👍🏻, just a thought. Make sure covers on the windows are on the inside never outside, you need to be able to pull away without going outside. 👍🏻

My husband loves the Class A's too, but our Class C is pretty big (2022 Jayco Redhawk 31f) and we don't owe anything on it (it was free, the cash that came with it paid most of the taxes). I wouldn't want a payment and definitely wouldn't won't to be upside down on it. I say...go with a used teardrop camper (they were super cute, and kids would have a blast in it), you might could get a really good deal on one?

You spoke the truth….underwater after only 2 years of ownership of your van, interest rates in the mid 7s for a new one….RVs are a money pit. The facts of ownership are that you really have to accept that the cash will be flowing out of your bank account at an enormous rate to keep your RV maintained and fueled….not to mention the costs associated with staying at RV parks. Keep your van. Memories with grandkids can be made in many ways other than going into further debt to purchase a rapid depreciating item that all of you together might use 2 weeks out of a calendar year.

Don't get a towable. You'll have to buy a truck so that adds to your total cost. Plus, your truck will wear out faster, so you'll have more repairs & eventually a replacement vehicle. Not to mention, when driving, all passengers are stuck in the truck for the drive...can't just get up & go to the restroom or go lie down or whatever. With all the traveling y'all do, a Class A is the only way to go.
