How did you go about having the VA. Paying for yours any info would really help. You looked free. Thank you for making my day.
Sorry for the late response. Sometimes notifications don't show up. Derec was able to have the VA get the 4wd wheelchair because he is using it as his everyday chair and he expressed to his OT & PT that he loves outdoor recreation and that our lifestyle is camping. So they approved it. You need to talk about it in your wheelchair clinic. He goes to the VA Hospital that specialiazes in spinal cord injury for most of his health care. It is 4 hours away but worth it to get the equipment he needs. Hope that helps. Any further questions shoot Derec an email @ vanlifevoyages@gmail.com
I know that medical insurance doesn’t cover wheelchair. But you have insurance that cover wheelchair get damage , or in accidents or if ver stole. If you do can you please have the name I will be very thankful for the information
Insurance typically only covers equipment, especially power chairs only every 5 years so if things break, we have our foundation that can help people in between with basic stuff. Seeing this video is encouraging. I have hidden disabilities myself. I also used to be a nurse who lost my identity when I had to file for disability. I got rid of a huge travel trailer and bought a minivan right before the pandemic. I kept all my tents and outdoor camping gear. I wanted to do a mix of minivan and tent and screen room camping. The pandemic set us back. My husband still has 5 years until he can take an early retirement. He doesn't have the best health either so we're hoping he makes it that long being able to work. We're more East than you. Right now we're looking at weekend trips. He gets every Friday Saturday and Sunday off. After downsizing from a huge travel trailer that slept 7-8 to tents and a minivan will take a few trips to see what we really need. Where are you all From? Maybe someday we'll run into you out there. New subscriber.
Hi Cathy 👋 thanks for subscribing. You & I have a lot in common. The same thing happened to me, I was a RN for 18 years when my neurological issues got too severe & I was put on an early medical retirement at age 48. I too lost my identity & sort of went into a depression until I realized I could still spend time outdoors. Then realized how I felt better being in the outdoors & it actually helped my pain & mental health tremendously. So I am very glad you came upon our channel. We are in Central California but go to Arizona, Nevada, & Oregon a lot. But we are making our way more east this next year, so it would be great to meet up some time. ~ Tanya

You're a lucky man. How do you afford the van and the powerchair? I know neither of them are cheap.
Hi Glen... the van is a daily driver & cost less than most new vehicles when we bought it in January of 2020. I served in the Navy & am a veteran so the VA paid for the lift & the wheelchair. We sold a house & downsized to a much smaller house this last year so we could travel more. We also got the small cargo trailer that we pull that also holds my 4x4 chair & supplies that enables us to boondock for longer periods of time. Hioe this answers your question. It was awesome seeing you and rejoicing with your new found mobility. I received my Extreme X-8 five years ago, have had my tires replaced once because I had worn them out. I live in northern Michigan and I even use my chair in the snows of winter. Very little has slowed me down and you won’t either. Best of luck to you both. Keith

This is so awesome! so happy for Derek he needs to put a snowplow on that thing oh maybe I couldn't have given him that idea LOL for real I went to the beach with my electric chair I had to get help to get to the hard part of the sand man I know that feeling that feeling of freedom infront on the water is just amazing! having the freedom to ride around freely is different! maybe some day I'll get my hands on one of these and not worry about getting stuck and be free to go anywhere anytime outside!
Caleb, well said my brother. Coincidentally I am working on a plow feature. It'll be more of a dozer for dirt moving, but the principle is the same. I'd like to rig a tow hitch on it too ... 🚜🤣

It looks like Derec was enjoying himself. It always makes my heart happy when someone is able to do thing beyond what was thought possible. I wish my parents had something similar but not sure it would work for them. They have scooters that they use.

Do they use scooters in the sand? If so which ones? This x8 is awesome but WAY over what I can afford lol
@@Todd_G_FPV No unfortunately their scooters don't go in the sand, plus they are so big and awkward for them both to be able to get out and enjoy things. It breaks my heart. I saw Derec's chair at the O'22 meet up, it was really cool, however I couldn't imagine that it takes up much less space than the scooters do.
