Had a friend of mine play what was called the senior tour back in the 90’s and was paired with Chi Chi. He said that when Chi Chi saw he was nervous he went out of his way to make him calm down and relax by joking and just talking about life. He said it was the best round of his life.
Chi Chi Rodriguez what a guy!. I recall a tournament in 70s I think. At one hole the tournament organisers planted a large tree to stop players taking a short cut at a dog leg hole, which was regularly done in previous years.. So Chi Chi sticks a pencil in the ground, tees up on that and plays a trick shot over the tree and still takes advantage of the short cut. Legendary.
Chi Chi was always great to follow around the links. Every time he came to play at Torrey Pines I tried to get out to follow him, this was in the 70s and talk about class, he had it. He was my favorite of all time with Lee Trevino and Phil the Thrill close behind. I met Seve at Torrey and thanked him for coming to San Diego so we could watch him in person, what did he do, thanked me for coming out to see him and shook my hand. There are very few of these classy gentlemen left but I will always have my memories of the GREAT CHI CHI AND SEVE. GOD BLESS YOU CHEECH AND RIP SEVE.

I miss the days when the Tour had genuine characters. Lee Trevino joking with the gallery. Sam Snead teeing a practice round barefoot after being called a hillbilly. Palmer staying late to sign autographs until every request was filled. "Fuzzy" Zoeller trading barbs with his fellow competitors. Today's players are all cut from the same cloth in that they are mostly impersonal and bland, as if having personalities would drive off corporate sponsors. The passion is no longer there, especially when 10th place in a run-of-the-mill event earns way more than tournament winners made 30+ years ago.

Classic courses like Congressional or Firestone are dropped in favor of cookie cutter TPC venues where the setups routinely guarantee low scoring and shot-making is a lost art. Tournaments, which were once local points of civic pride or served as venues for celebrities to entertain friends (Bob Hope Desert Classic, Bing Crosby National Pro-Am, Danny Thomas Memphis Classic, Glen Campbell LA Open, etc.) have totally lost their identity and become homogeneous. My grandfather taught at Guilford College in North Carolina, so the Greater Greensboro Open was always a big deal to me. Even after the area chamber of commerce started adding corporate sponsors, at least I knew where the event was held since "Greensboro" was part of the title. Now that it's been the Wyndham Championship since 2007, nobody knows what part of the country the tournament is in. Same with every other event on the Tour, which now have only corporate names in the title and no longer any regional identity. Outside the major championships, the Tour events on TV are nothing more than three-hour commercials with a golf theme.
I agree. Golfers used to have so much more personality. I wonder if it's because those guys all had more "normal" upbringings, where you know today's golfers have probably been raised on golf, golf, golf, and practically had the clubs tied to their hands their whole childhood.

The corporate takeover of golf manifested itself to the point of absurdity a few years ago at the Open Championship at Carnoustie when Nike dressed most of the field in their uniforms.They all wore the same shirts but on different days so it looked as though they had traded overnight,marketing overkill at its ridiculous best. The PGA Tour is also asked to help remedy the slow play situation for which it is largely responsible but no action will ever be taken while the TV channels enjoy the high revenue from ad breaks,they would sooner have a 6-hour tournament than a 3 1/2 hour one.

To call out Fred Couples and Davis Love III doesn't make sense to me. And these comments I'm reading...yikes. It's so tiring reading people talk about how great things were "in the good old days" and how terrible they are now. Not every golfer in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s was some big personality. The fact is, most golfers in those days were boring, run-of-the-mill people who nobody knew and had absolutely zero personality. This is revisionist history at its finest. The game of golf is more competitive and exciting than it has ever been before and the state of the game is great in 2023!
I disagree. Greed has taken over the sport. There's nothing classy about the guys who abandoned the PGA Tour for the LIV Tour. But greed isn't limited to golf. It's a symptom of the times. And that goes for all the major sports and a lot of businesses. Take college football. There are 43 bowl game this season. That's 86 teams. Seventeen didn't even have a winning record, and two of those had losing records. And now you've got the NFL and MLB promoting gambling.
John Daly is a good dude. When he won his first major in 1991 he donated $30k of his winnings to the family of a man killed when he was struck by lightening. It's not like he was 'John Daly' then, flush from tour cash and sponsorship money. He was an alkie, but he never really hurt anyone. He never beat the crap out of his wife or something. When he's not drinking his behavior is fine. I think he has a big heart.
It is the problem many older people who are past their best days, but wish desperately to relive their best days, have. It is easier to villify those coming up below you as inherently inferior because they are either better at the things you were good at or the older person perceives the younger person or group as having it "too easy". Basically, he is envious. If Chi Chi spent less time worrying about a persons appearance, and more about their heart, he would probably not be such a milkshake duck. But, narcissism is often under the mask of charisma, so his attitude is unsurprising.

The selfish, ego filled jerks of today's tour brings shame to this game and if it wasn't for the tours self imposed rules of conduct for them,it would be like others sports with guys like Daly that is a trash bag or Woods that is a cheater and liar among so many other things and brings shame to his father and golf. We love not only the game, but the character and decency of this sport, and try not to turn it into just another sport dominated by violent thugs. Of course that image matches up well with our american society that I also dislike anymore.
And my mom and dad were both drunken alcoholics.....while I choose to not drink at all. We're all responsible for our own lives and what our folks did should be the very reason we stay away from that mistake, and not be an excuse to replay it like your trying to get me to believe.
