This is actual journalism and film. If there's a single thing learned from this it's how eager people are to tell their story hoping someone will listen.
As an addict in recovery, I can relate to these people. It was me for a long time. It's very easy to judge these people who are either using drugs, alcohol or mentally disturbed . But we need to look at the root causes their childhoods and the systems that failed them. These people were bright eyed children at one point, and had dreams of becoming a doctors, policeman or athlete. The systems like DCF , education, Mental health services, Foster care failed these children and now they pay the price. So many children are abused , suffer unspeakable traumas and end up on the streets. Next time you see someone living rough, instead of looking away like they are invisible, buy them a sandwich or start a polite conversation. Your kindness can be an awakening for change.
Sad how America turns its back on those in need using their use of drugs and alcohol and they get what they deserve. Used and abused by the system and 5013c not for profits that bring in billions of dollars for those in need and those in need lucky to get a fifty dollar Walmart gift card. While the non profits and public authorities cruising around in Cadillacs living the life of fine wine and dining shop till you drop, going to hell in a hand basket blow a thousand dollars in a heart beat but not a dollar for those in need. Prisons and institutions big big business. Some of my friends survived their addictions some didn't. Child abuse, physical or mental it is well known the top reason for so called mental illness that's justified sadness for what they have been through fed all the drugs you could possibly want but good luck with food water shelter clothing and basic needs. Be a cold day in Hades before the government and non profits from the federal to local provide that. Shameful 81% of Americans in Gallup Poll say they believe in God and turn the other cheek to those suffering. Nobodies a nobody, inner child still exist deep down somewhere and love the child and not ones own ego.
For those of us on the cusp.... A glimpse of what is to come or a wake up call. Every one of these people have a lifetime of memories and experiences that started out similar to everyone else, but complacency, bad choices, terrible circumstances, being naive, addiction, curiosity, mental illness and other combinations of life led them to the point in time they found themselves in front of the camera. This isn't just a documentary it's a display of life on earth no one wants to acknowledge.
I whole-heartedly agree with the point you're making, but I think it's unfair to say that *every one* of the people in the video is there as a result of bad choices or whatever. The guy with his wife from Indiana seemed like they were living a happy little life. The Santa Claus guy and his friend had a big RV and a golf cart. The old dude with the surfboard and the "16-ounce arm curls" and the retired vet with the IDF shirt were "living the dream", even if they might not have a whole lot of material possessions.

Many documentaries get so intrusive, as some central voice seems to guide the conversation and the topic, leading the viewer to the desired conclusion. I love how this documentary does the opposite of that, just letting the subjects tell their own stories. The result is honest, frank, uncompromising even, but open-ended and ripe for interpretation. Really well done. This is impressive filmmaking and I enjoyed watching it to bring in 2023.

I've lived here for 22 years, on the Gulf of Mexico. I'm from Philadelphia and I will tell you that I found a home here, that I never knew anywhere else. Life is slower. The sun goes down over the water, the birds, the colors, the plant life… Old Florida has its charm like nowhere else in the United States.
I grew up in SW Florida..no desire to go back.. 12:40 if you got a drinking problem handle it. I'd be dead by now..i drank like a fish for 20+ years of my life every day abd night!! I can proudly say I'm sober from alcohol now 16 years!! Thank God..be blessed!

I found this quite moving. It's so easy to dismiss these people as rejects but they're very human. They were all someone's baby son at some point. There's probably a lot of trauma in their pasts but they keep fighting and keep going.
That's true. I grew up in Florida. Everyone obviously isn't like this. But a lot of us grew up in literal poverty. Some aren't strong enough to make it out. I can never see myself leaving Florida. Moved her in 94 and I love it here. It’s incredibly unique and my experience though weird, are not violent or dangerous. I’ve lived in Miami, Tampa, Tallahassee and Jacksonville. I’ve never felt in danger or afraid.

I escaped from Florida many years ago. This film, plus visits to family still living there, remind me of the ugly buildings, ugly landscape, the cultural vacuum, the heat, humidity, and general miserableness of the place.

My cousin Steve got into a lot of fights when he was younger either by being out there just looking for it or provoking others until he caused fights. He was strong, tough and won most of his fights because he got himself plenty of experience. One night he was celebrating his first year of working abroad in Spain as a builder whilst in a restaurant with his girlfriend a spat broke out between himself and an Irishman which went to fists. Steve couldn't handle his beer and this is when he was very volatile. He worked on this Irishman before heading of home to his apartment where he retired to bed only to be woken up after midnight by the guy banging on his door. He opened the door and the Irishman attacked him stabbing Steve about 15-20 times in the abdomen and chest. His apartment was below ground level and he had to climb steps upwards to get to the main road where he tried to flag down traffic to get help or get to a hospital. I saw police photographs of all the blood leading halfway up this flight of steps where he died from the massive trauma and blood loss. My cousin Steve picked on the wrong guy that night and his luck simply ran out. The Irishman went on the run and a manhunt was underway which lasted several months. He was eventually caught and thrown in prison. 12 months after conviction he committed suicide in prison probably because of getting a life sentence in a terrible prison. Is it ever worth it just to feel big for a moment..? I certainly don't think so.
I live in Arkansas and I know how awkward it is to be around somebody like the first guy, especially when they're drunk. It's a really weird and different feeling because you're on edge but trying to keep your cool so nothing happens, I hate it. I think there's people like that all over the south but it's really uncomfortable when you're the one experiencing it. They're all the exact same way too lol

The weather is perfect, always🔥HOT!! It's paradise. I'm 10-15 minutes drive from town so it's nice and quiet where I'm at, no crime, NOT crowded. Florida has nothing to offer in many aspects. Many folks here work remote who actually make good money. Theres no manufacturing for the "average" working man. You can only do roofing, pool resurfacing or shit like that out in the sun for so long. Retail jobs here pay crumbs and its getting worse, especially right now (as are other states) but florida is far from the "postcard" image many perceive it to be. Its become stupid over crowded heres over the past 4 yrs or so. It has its pros and there are plenty of successful folks here, but its just a melting pot. You could have million dollar home here in pinellas and a trailer park (not saying all are bad) 3 streets up the road. No states perfect, but ive been here 30 yrs and ready to get the fuck out myself and mainly due to the population increase.
Reminds me of growing up in the gettho of Dayton, Ohio. We were dirt poor and my father and mother never drank or done any type of drug. We were just dirt poor but we had a roof over our heads, clean clothes, soap and water and heat. No air conditioning though and it gets nasty sticky, humid and hot in June, July and Aug and some of September. Some times we didn’t have a fan. But I made it through high school, went to college and made good money my entire life I worked hard.

I've lived here for 22 years, on the Gulf of Mexico. I'm from Philadelphia and I will tell you that I found a home here, that I never knew anywhere else. Life is slower. The sun goes down over the water, the birds, the colors, the plant life… Old Florida has its charm like nowhere else in the United States.
I grew up in SW Florida..no desire to go back.. 12:40 if you got a drinking problem handle it. I'd be dead by now..i drank like a fish for 20+ years of my life every day abd night!! I can proudly say I'm sober from alcohol now 16 years!! Thank God..be blessed!

I found this quite moving. It's so easy to dismiss these people as rejects but they're very human. They were all someone's baby son at some point. There's probably a lot of trauma in their pasts but they keep fighting and keep going.

That's true. I grew up in Florida. Everyone obviously isn't like this. But a lot of us grew up in literal poverty. Some aren't strong enough to make it out. When you talk to them you can see the pain in their soul. Reminds me of some song lyrics

I can never see myself leaving Florida. Moved her in 94 and I love it here. It’s incredibly unique and my experience though weird, are not violent or dangerous. I’ve lived in Miami, Tampa, Tallahassee and Jacksonville. I’ve never felt in danger or afraid.

I escaped from Florida many years ago. This film, plus visits to family still living there, remind me of the ugly buildings, ugly landscape, the cultural vacuum, the heat, humidity, and general miserableness of the place.

My cousin Steve got into a lot of fights when he was younger either by being out there just looking for it or provoking others until he caused fights. He was strong, tough and won most of his fights because he got himself plenty of experience. One night he was celebrating his first year of working abroad in Spain as a builder whilst in a restaurant with his girlfriend a spat broke out between himself and an Irishman which went to fists. Steve couldn't handle his beer and this is when he was very volatile. He worked on this Irishman before heading of home to his apartment where he retired to bed only to be woken up after midnight by the guy banging on his door. He opened the door and the Irishman attacked him stabbing Steve about 15-20 times in the abdomen and chest. His apartment was below ground level and he had to climb steps upwards to get to the main road where he tried to flag down traffic to get help or get to a hospital. I saw police photographs of all the blood leading halfway up this flight of steps where he died from the massive trauma and blood loss.
My cousin Steve picked on the wrong guy that night and his luck simply ran out. The Irishman went on the run and a manhunt was underway which lasted several months. He was eventually caught and thrown in prison. 12 months after conviction he committed suicide in prison probably because of getting a life sentence in a terrible prison. Is it ever worth it just to feel big for a moment..? I certainly don't think so.

Florida has nothing to offer in many aspects. Many folks here work remote who actually make good money. Theres no manufacturing for the "average" working man. You can only do roofing, pool resurfacing or shit like that out in the sun for so long. Retail jobs here pay crumbs and its getting worse, especially right now (as are other states) but florida is far from the "postcard" image many perceive it to be. Its become stupid over crowded heres over the past 4 yrs or so. It has its pros and there are plenty of successful folks here, but its just a melting pot. You could have million dollar home here in pinellas and a trailer park (not saying all are bad) 3 streets up the road. No states perfect, but ive been here 30 yrs and ready to get the fuck out myself and mainly due to the population increase.

Reminds me of growing up in the gettho of Dayton, Ohio. We were dirt poor and my father and mother never drank or done any type of drug. We were just dirt poor but we had a roof over our heads, clean clothes, soap and water and heat. No air conditioning though and it gets nasty sticky, humid and hot in June, July and Aug and some of September. Some times we didn’t have a fan. But I made it through high school, went to college and made good money my entire life I worked hard.
