The whole point of using their original names is to make it more archaical and educational for the modern audiances as how they were called them back in the days when they were worshipped inthe various ancient religions.
@@hariscapo Freyr (Old Norse: 'Lord'), sometimes anglicized as Frey, is a widely attested god in Norse mythology, associated with kingship, fertility, peace, prosperity, fair weather, and good harvest. Freyr, sometimes referred to as Yngvi-Freyr, was especially associated with Sweden and seen as an ancestor of the Swedish royal house. Freyr was associated with peace and pleasure, and was represented with a phallic statue in the Temple at Uppsala. Freyr was "the most renowned of the aesir", and was venerated for good harvest and peace. In the mythological stories in the Icelandic books the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, Freyr is presented as one of the Vanir, the son of the god Njörðr and his sister-wife, as well as the twin brother of the goddess Freyja. The wolf that you mentioned is Loki's child Fenris or Fenrir and it is a giant/monster not a god, who's release ignite Ragnarok.
I don't think pay to win applies here unless Freyr ends up dominating PVP and is top of the tier list with no competition. Like even if he's S tier as long as he's not alone in S tier I think a paid god pack is totally acceptable.
Theres dlc in every rts game. And theres going to be china and another faction, as well as a 4th god for the base game factions eventually too. So I dont thunk freyr should be judged too harshly just yet.
Until the devs change what side the casting UI is on based on player location on that map, you could just rotate the map 180deg and that would also "fix" the issue.
Freyr doesn't feel pay-to-win to me personally - if anything they actually feel quite weak compared to Odin or Thor. The -50% Research Speed really, really hurts in faster paced matches especially Norse mirror matches. The GP is only really good for one use around your TC and becomes basically unusable afterwards in contrast to Sentinels which is permanent and much more easily reused. Dwarves/Gatherers being able to repair buildings is **extremely** niche and doesn't have too many use-cases. The best thing he's got going for him is (sadly) access to Freyja which isn't exactly unique but her tech coupled with his own unique tech can produce really meaty Cavalry.

insanely strong aggro with this new god. spawn in. get enough 2 get 2 second age drop a fort next to your opponent, build a town center. drop the boar to clear their army then flood in with battering rams. insane 1-2 punch
I agree with the content vs pay-to-win mindset. Using WoW as an example like in the video, people do not consider buying an expansion pay-to-win-- technically you are getting an advantage over other players, better gear, more content, etc, but you are paying for additional game content. While buying a token is just there to give you more of something other players have to grind more. It's the same in these instances, the additional Civ is new content, it is not speeding in the process of getting something or giving you an outright unfair advantage over someone else, youre just paying for a whole new civ. If, instead, you paid money and it just gave you faster tech than someone else playing the same civ, or you get special units specifically behind a paywall, then it'd be pay-to-win. But additional content isn't there for that, its extra work put into a game, not a shortcut. I would also consider it an issue if the DLC was only available for a limited time, but that's not the case either. FOMO mixed with pay-to-win can be especially nasty in gaming, even FOMO alone can be if used maliciously, but that isn't the case with this sort of thing so I think it's perfectly acceptable. I've never felt like someone had an outright advantage over me for owning the chieftains expansion in AoE3 before I did, for example.
Content like this is hard to say about P2W because the content is kind of expected to be over tuned initially, but RTS games always work to bring all player choices as close together in win rate as possible. So, any real P2W from the new civ being overpowered generally goes away after a couple balance patches.
The main thing that I find weird about Freyr is that he has 3 minor gods unique to him. Have the devs said anything about shuffling around some of those minor gods so that other Major Gods (like Thor Odin and Loki) have access to Ullr, Aegir and Vidar? Thor, for instance, would love to have access to any of those 3.
I think there always is going to exist a virtual advantage to the players that use new gods just by the fact that no body is really sure on what the play is going to be to counter them. Right now it might be only Freyr but I expect a lot of discussion on the topic once the new pantheons get dropped. I definitely wouldn't call it pay to win though.
but its also an disadvantage cause you dont know whats strong with that new civ. In the end its all about balancing as long new content does not powercreep older content its not pay to win

It is a totally new way to play. It does not make you a better Odin or Set player having the Freyr DLC. Unlike an exclusive weapon in a MMO that really, lacking the access to it can make you a worse player not being able to compete. (Or if a RTS had exclusive units you could get for your preferred faction that allow you to get ahead.) Due to the package deal nature, I am not at all bothered by this.
