Motivation is actually quite different from discipline and shouldnt be underestimated or disregarded as a tool to get people to do what they want to do. Neurochemically, motivation to pursue a reward is governed by dopamine. When you pursue something in anticipation for a great reward only to find out the reward wasnt as great as you thought it would be, your dopamine baseline lowers, i.e. you are LESS motivated to pursue not only that reward but any reward in general. So for example, what is actually happening neurochemically to someone who really cant get off the couch to go exercise, despite always giving themselves an internal pep talk, who instead just finds themselves scrolling through YT or Tiktok vids not being able to pursue the things they WANT to pursue? What is happening is that they are doing very minimal work by scrolling trying to pursue a reward in the form of videos which are not very fulfilling. Even though these vids arent fulfilling, they are still giving pleasure to the brain, and after this pleasure from attaining the reward comes a sort of mental "pain" that balances it out. For example, you got a christmas gift you've always wanted after having saved up for it, and then theres always a feeling of a "What now?" kind of emptiness that comes after big achievements like this. This happens on a smaller scale with scrolling and consuming social media too, getting a hit of pleasure from a video, having that pleasure dip down to a "what now?" feeling, and then in response to that "what now?" your brain uses dopamine to motivate you to seek another video in pusuit of that pleasurable feeling again, except now your baseline dopamine is lower (you feel a little bit less motivated to do ANYTHING). But scrolling isnt much effort so it costs very little to pursue the reward of vids that become decreasingly pleasurable the more you consume them. This pursuit, pleasure, pain, lower baseline dopamine is happening like what, every 20 seconds or so in the case of even just watching motivational weightloss tiktoks? In the end a lot of people who dont have motivation and cant get off the couch to do anything have exhausted their brain's reward centers. This is similar to how addiction works, like you wouldn't tell an opium addict to just "have dicipline" like it'll fix all their problems. So the question is, how do you actually take advantage of motivation to work FOR you instead of just offloading all the work onto "discipline" which is still needed and important but distinctly different from motivation? Cutting out all the little pleasure hits from unimportant things helps, and its not just social media, it can be food related, gaming related, the little notification pings on your phone from that app you downloaded but never use, etc. Literally sitting down and being bored for a whole day doing nothing will help refresh your baseline dopamine to better levels. Consistency while in pursuit of a goal can be formed by attaching pleasure to the pursuit more than the reward itself. So truly enjoy working out even if you turn into a bit of a masochist about it rather than finding pleasure in dropping 3 lbs off the scale at the end of the day, or finally fitting into the bikini or wedding dress. Because if you attach that much pleasure in fitting into clothing for example, what else will your brain seek in order to get a pleasure hit after the "what now?". If exercise itself isnt the pleasure youve trained yourself to keep seeking, your brain might as well pursue less healthier things as a substitute like binge eating or binge watching videos, etc.
You inspired a new generation of people to do fitness by making genuine meme content that not only educates about fitness but incorporates geek passions that people relate to. The content represents a large audience that never saw themselves to be capable of getting fit and you're real about how it's a long-term journey. Keep up the inspiration!
Your advice on someone starting off is soooooo on point! At least that's what happened to me when I started last year. The two things I started doing (at 280 pounds) was walk and changing the inner dialogue in my head from punishing and insulting to encouraging. I didn't even walk consistently. I would sometimes walk for three days straight, and then it'd be maybe a week before I did more daily walks. Then I went to swimming and weights three days a week. Now I'm doing four to five sessions a week. A year later I'm down to 200 pounds! Looking at the goal of 180! So even if you start small, it is so surprising how quickly you can reach a fitness milestone even in a year!
You are the perfect human being. Right now I am still doing full body workouts everyday and I feel kind of scared to move away from it because of body dysmorphia. For example having legs visibly underdeveloped compared to the rest of my body or the other way around.
Male 31, been following Derek for a minute, glad you became a part of that solar system, mad support, your vibe is super positive because you are just being you. I'm a fan. The people like it. Your trajectory is upward and positive and is inspiring. Best wishes, you have my upvote! Keep it up!
The days I perform best at the gym are usually days where I had a horrible shift at work. I have been pushing through anger my whole life and it’s really useful when your motivation drops down to zero absolute (which is more frequently than people think).
After translating your forearm tattoos and the tats on the undersides of your fingers I appreciate your energy. Informative health content and a beautiful soul are exactly what people need more of from their health influencers. Thanks for your presence and contribution Patty.
I'd be interested in hearing who you look up to in the fitness world. A lot of people look up to you, but knowing what people you learn from and how you got your personal style could be interesting. Thanks for the great video!
I loved your answer about discipline. People often ask me how I stay motivated to go to the gym and I don't, I often don't want to go but not going isn't an option.

Great questions and answers. Subscribed. I think the answer to the question about staying motivated, and it being more about discipline really hit home for me. The older I get, especially with two kids and a family in general, my time seems to dissappear. I still try to make time, getting up at 5 am and all that, but it's so hard to maintain... sigh. I'll get there eventually, but thanks for your videos, they actually are inspiring and hilarious.

It's refreshing, but also people can't help but want to see if you're just as hot as the buff blondes with long hair.... just know that you are.

Great advice about starting to go to the gym. I screwed up there and got overwhelmed but because life happens, I just stuck with it and it sucked. Knowing what I know now. Id prob go as much as my body allows. In the beginning, it took 3-5 days before my muscles stopped aching and I could work them out again. My dumbass was there the next day suffering through workouts and not recovering and it took me 3-4 months before my body got used to that ridiculous schedule. Even now I only workout 3 days a week with atleast one rest day in between and alternate body parts which gives my body enough time to recover before working the same group again.
I only know you from seeing clips of you on youtube. Glad to see you have your own youtube channel. I can definitely see you being successful here on youtube.
"When people talk about motivation, they actually mean discipline"
Spot on.
Motivation is actually quite different from discipline and shouldnt be underestimated or disregarded as a tool to get people to do what they want to do.

Very relatable on the toxic motivation. I'll be lifting weights and thinking of the wide range of negative thoughts in my head = )
AKSKSKSKAK i love your personality so much i hope thats not overbearing ‘:)), i really appreciated what you said abt essentially easing yourself into a good workout routine! (seems a lot less daunting than ppl saying like “u just commit 😤😤‼️‼️” lol) ANYWAYS lovely video!! Have a good day :D

This is so fun bc I looked up your yt a while ago but you didn't gave an acc then, but boy you do
Great advice about starting to go to the gym.
Omg is that a Maplewood and Moss candle?! That is my favorite scent
