- “Rain Falling from the Roof,” composed by and performed with my dear friend Wu Tong 吳彤. Here’s his story of the music. #songsofcomfort #songsofchange #SDG3 #SDG12 Silkroad
"There is a story from the the Northern Song Dynasty, where a novice monk asks a renowned Zen master about the meaning of Buddhism. The master points to the raindrops falling from the eaves of a roof. The novice monk, after being perplexed for a long time, suddenly experiences an epiphany.
It was during a rainstorm that I first read this story. At that time, the entirety of humankind was dealing with the trials of the coronavirus pandemic. Upon hearing the sound of the falling raindrops, I was reminded that people depend upon peaceful coexistence with each other and with Mother Nature to live in true harmony. No one exists in isolation.”

This video was originally released on August 14, 2020, as part of Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsOfComfort project, which was launched at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide comfort in a time of anxiety and fear. The project inspired thousands of people around the world to upload their own songs of comfort in the months that followed.
For people don't know the instrument Mr. Wu Tong plays, it is actually the oldest Chinese instrument called "sheng" (笙) . It has almost the same age of China. Hope more people can know and like it.
Huh, thank you I was wondering. That’s really cool.
Thank you. It’s a hauntingly beautiful sound.
I thought, that's the weirdest bagpipe I've ever seen....
It reminds me of a set of bagpipes with a continuous human wind source.
Thank you so much for answering my curious pondering as per name to a beautiful instrument!
I'm living on the same planet,
at the same time - as Yo-Yo Ma. #WordsOfComfort 🍀
And, also, Joni Mitchell. ❤️
❣️💗💒
Seeing him live was one of my greatest joys. He played with the house lights up so he could interact with the audience. What an experience!!
I like your description
Yes !!! .. and What a marvelous vibrato and bow hand !!!!
My dearest sister died in july this year, this rendition makes my 75 year old eyes cries a river..revoking when we used to play together..😭
My deepest condolences for your loss. May the memories you shared give you comfort.
No post-editing, no loop pedals, no sound effects, no digital reverb, no studio microphones... nothing. Yet... we are all teary. A true reflection of the musical prowess both of these gentlemen poses.
I spent an hour just watching and watching this.
So disturbingly true.......
I mean... There IS a bit of reverb, which is nothing to frown at. An average room in the house is quite dry and people aren't used to hearing that kind of dry sound. So, yes, there is some post-editing but it is absolutely minimal.
It's more the style of music they're playing than the method of producing it. Music this moving could be done with all the gadgets you mention. 1 person alternately picking up either instrument and using the gadgets to assist in putting it all together.
Yes, melody from heart to heart. Nothing more is required.
Master Wu Tong is not only a instrumentalists but also a vocalist, the matter of fact he started one of the earliest rock band in China, and he won 2 Grammy with Yo-Yo Ma in 2010 and 2017.
Love his rendition of 望春風, an encore piece at silk road ensemble in 2019 in Taipei..
I have always been reminiscent of the rain in Taipei.. and this piece perfectly echoed that sentiment!
The Sheng is mesmerizing.
For you guys who don't know the instrument Mr. Wu Tong playing: It's 笙; Sheng in maestro Yo-Yo Ma and Wu Tong's nation, or Shou in my language, Japanese. It's one of the few and truly unique traditional instruments in Far east, which can plays multiple pipes simultaneously, like pipe organ or bagpipes, and can generate pretty unique chords. Those chords are so unique in fact that there's an anecdote that 笙 at Paris Expo 1889 from Japan inspired young Debussy to eventually write his unique works.
If you get interested in 笙 and want to hear more of it, there are great videos by our maestro Hideki Togi, professional traditional Japanese music player😘

is it so bothering you to say this instrument is from CHINA? May I ask is there any single musical instrument is originated from Japan?
@@johnhankswjh692 shakuhachi is the first one that came to mind, and I’m sure there are others.
Thank you for the Information!
@@johnhankswjh692 Yes, it is definitely from China, but historically China did so much influence over Far east that basically all of our Far east countries share long-standing cultural traditions with China. This is exactly one of them.
And for true original Japanese traditional instruments... it's kinda difficult. For example Shamisen actually originates from Okinawan Sanshin, which actually originates from Chinese Sanxian... I mean, something like Kokiriko could be a genuinely true original Japanese traditional instrument, could it?
It's a very interesting instrument. Yo-Yo Ma and Wu Tong aren't technically from the same nation, though they both share Chinese heritage of course. Wu Tong is from China and so are Yo-Yo Ma's parents, but Yo-Yo Ma is an American who was born in France and moved to the USA at a young age.
"No one exists in isolation." This should be the perspective of human beings after this pandemic. Thank you for the music.
Wu Tong, You are magnificent. Thank You, Yo-Yo
@slady Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
1’56” Tears began to fill my eyes. Who would’ve thought the cello and the Sheng could make such beautiful harmony!
I saw your comment around 1'48" when I started to tear.
so beautiful....
I can't describe how I feel. I just want to stay in it.
That’s the best way to describe it.
Thank you very much Yo yo Ma and wu Tong. Awesome👏🏻👏🏻🙏💕
The joy and light in Yo Yo’s face is beautiful to behold. His music is a gift to himself also, I think.
@helen Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
Thank you G-d for musicians like these
Truthful Kindness here. Thanks so much for sharing ! ❤
Soulful to my God!!! Thanks
This is very nice I am listening to it with my baby. His name is Bruce and he is 4 months old. He is so calm listening to you guys!
This is SO good! It's the best. I watch it over and over. Perfection!
Breathtaking. "No one exists in isolation." There is truth in that. Perhaps the wisdom this pandemic offers is that in isolation, we may find ourselves united in ways we were not before. Isolation can occur even in numbers, within our own minds or hearts. The gift of being compelled to isolate ourselves as we have is the opportunity we've been given to evaluate the true gift of our unity as humans, as *beings* experiencing the physical realm in harmony, *together*. Thank you for this breathtaking piece of music, played together in a way that wouldn't have happened without the wise offering of "isolation".
Wow,This is awesome !! Ancient Chinese instrument and western instrument played together
I too love this music n instrument very much. But can we start using the correct terminology??? Saying ancient China is like saying ancient United States. I find "ancient East Asian culture" more appropriate. It seems like historians n archeologists specializing East Asian culture have a lot of work to do.
"息が合う"とは このことですね⁉
お互いを尊重し合い、まるで1人が奏でる音のようでした✨
そして気がつけば 私も一緒に息をしていました♪
一日の初めに素敵な音楽を ありがとうございます!
お二人の芸術家に感謝🙏✨
What a beautiful collaboration! I swear I felt my heart chakra vibrate listening to this and I didn’t want it to end. Thank you gentlemen! Masters, both of you!
Isten óvja a családdal együtt.
How marvellous. What a wonderful performance 🤩 🤩🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌛🌹💋🌼🌻🏵️🌸😀🌷
Dear Mr. Ma and colleagues, thank you so much for this 'Songs of Comfort' series! It means so much to me and I'm so grateful to have art like this in my life!
The combination of the sheng and the arco of the cello sounded more amazing than I anticipated
Thank you for this beautiful blessing. The duet offers 🎶 that bridges living in the moment with hope and peace.
I think I have been keeping my breath for 5.15 minutes straight 💚💚💚💚 Exquisite.
Thank you.
🌄🙋🏻♀️😊😃Wow, This is So Beautiful, Thank You For Creating This😊🎶🎶🎶🎶
This takes my breath away, transporting me to some place new.
I just can say thanks to both of you.🤗🌻🍀
God bless you are a blessing on to me David
Beautiful to the point of tears - both the music and the musicians.
@marilyn Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
Such a great concentration of beauty
Wow didn't know a sheng would sound good with a cello. Kudos to both amazing artists!
This is blessing because as I type this comment it is raining.
I stopped playing the cello quite some time ago but through your music I feel connected to my past. Thank you.
So Breathtaking...!!!
I'm very happy listening this video ! .👏👍
This is so achingly lovely. So many of us are living with so much figurative and literal pain, and this music goes straight to the heart. Thank you both for the glory of this music. For me, it's like being able to touch the face of the Sun.
Yo-Yo Ma is one of those rare genius with humility and grace! The world needs more people like him.
My interpretation:
Music bridges parallel and unparalleled worlds. (people) If you don't believe me, then check out the comments of the people. Different names, races, and backgrounds. All unanimously agreeing that this song is beautiful. These beautiful and wonderful instruments would stay mute until a brilliant engineer uses his tools to bridge us together via music. The tools being emotions, skills, and experience, all wrapped in the inner man to express his dialogue through song. This is why Mr. Ma's music moves us.......he is speaking uninterrupted through his music. Music is the language of universe. It is a BEAUTIFUL language!
::: Bravo, for Yo Yo and his guests, allowing us to unite in the comment section, to cure some of the ills of this forlorn world! I am here because of Yo Yo and Raffi’s children’s music!
@Cynthia Truss, I love your original comment. Music can and often does bring a diversity of people together. ☔️☯️
What a beautiful interpretation!
@@wnynyn Thank you. I really appreciate your comment!
@@deeliciousplum I totally agree!
Oh my!!!!! “BRAVO” “BRAVO”!!!
This is so wonderfully soothing. I love the sound of the sheng. 💕
So beautiful thanks
Breathtakingly Beautiful Song✌✌✌ #SongsofComfort

Tears. Straight away. No idea what kind. What a treasure.
B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L…I just found my soul❤️
Sounds of heaven! Thank you for sharing. This is the first time I’ve seen and heard of a Shen instrument. Two masters of two different instruments are making amazing sound of the Far East Heaven as I close my eyes and envision how one would be like. I can’t get tired from listening to it. 🙏
This sounds like the sound of nature, and feels like the soul’s sound. I love this so much. Thank you.
In fact, the word "spirit" 靈 in Chinese pictography mean the sound of rains falling to the ground.
That's interesting to know, may I know what are the three 口and 巫 mean?
@@neoseow665 Thank you for paying attention. Ancient dictionary says it is rain falling. Therefore my interpretation is the three 口, is the picture of ripples when rains hit surfaces. 巫 means wizard, it can also be written as 王 sometimes, which means king. In fact, the original spirit is written 霝, now more often it is written 靈, but if you write 𤫊, people who knows won't say it is wrong.
@@chiajueiloh5688 thanks for your explanation, I learned more now!
Is this the same as the word "sheng"?
oops I think I meant "shen"
Leaves you breathless.
Wonderful! Thank you so much for this gift
Touched by the story behind the music. Many thanks.
I can’t stop watching this.
Your cello and his Sheng just sound ethereal together. Beautiful. Thank you💖
beautiful…
Beautiful! Just Beautiful! ❤ ❤
There is no literal word that has existed or I think ever will exist that can describe the feeling I get from this performance to its fullest. I'm just so grateful that I can enjoy something so simple yet complex and loving. I am truly dumbstruck and in awe. Whenever I listen to this, my worries seem to be washed away from the rain that falls off of my roof.
A stunning piece of music, exquisitely played. Thank you both.
Hello how are you doing today ❣️

wow I have never seen an instrument like that before and it sounds just like a harmonica. Beautifully played.
Again, thank you. Lovely.
I am speechless. Thank you for this gift. The Sheng is a new instrument to me and I'm smitten by the colors it produces. As always Maestro Ma, your playing touches my soul, but this performance has reached down into my depths filling it with beauty and melancholy simultaneously! Mr. Wu Tong, I am forever grateful!
Beautiful, sweet , peaceful.
@vera Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
Peaceful.
Unexpected harmony.
The instrument on the left is polyphonic, and the cellists notes explore and arrive at a sweet resolution!
A music lesson for today!
Thank you for the video!
That was hauntingly beautiful. Thank you.
@donna Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
