Thanks for sharing Joe! Your vocal inflections and general delivery remind me of my favourite shop teacher from high school, it's a pleasure to watch and listen.
I'm just amazed by the quality of the fixturing. That's the real star of the show here, on without it you'd have a hard time getting things to line up well just like you said.
I was going to be sarcastic and ask if you were going to hand scrape the ways for the tail-stock and cross slide, but If I did I'm thinking the joke would be on me! Thanks for sharing your time and talents Joe. Both are greatly appreciated for sure.
Wow.... You did a great job machining and videoing the headstock and tailstock. AND.... when they aligned, that just proved what a good job you did....!
Hi Joe, That's a thing of beauty. I'm learning it's all in the fixtures. Enjoying this series. Have to go out mow the lawn here. Have a fun holiday and you and the family stay safe.
I'm loving this series, and this is the best yet. Outstanding machining to get two independent parts to line up on a third part within a thou. I suspect even high end watchmakers would applaud this performance. At least they get to use tools designed to make tiny things; you're using machines designed for making engine parts and other big stuff.
Now that's a beautiful assembly! And the fit with the tailstock is amazing that you hit it right on with 0.001 clearance in there! Great stuff Joe. Keep it coming - we are all loving it!
After watching this video I realized that not only I couldn’t machine this part with any hope of success but I couldn’t even make the fixture to hold the part! But the machining tips and pearls of wisdom make it well worth watching.
Nice! Holy cows, that is a lot of work to get a couple holes aligned. On the other hand: 1, it worked; 2, it taught us a great deal about how to approach a problem like this with success. Thanks again Joe.
“It’s not easy to work and video ont he same time”. It’s good for all to realise that. When I build my models (Google me and you will find me) I make many photos and an occasional video and describing it all is quite time consuming. The bright side is you get to know many people to support and encourage you. Well done Joe!
Joe. You amaze me with your DEAD ON work. I have spent a lifetime doing this and i would have at least 2 parts to do that kind perfect machining. Thanks for showing some of us old timers some good tricks.
Been waiting to see this done. What great results😊. Anxious to see the tumbler handle and gear train come to life. Btw, the bottle of Palmolive on your sink was made at the CP liquids plant I retired from in Cambridge, OH. I learned lots about machine work in my maintenance job there. Thanks for supporting my company and my pension 👍
Yes Joe, this is craftsmanship. Personally I didn't learn about honing engine cylinders over night, worked with microns. I really appreciated, how many videos I've watched 😅, and you produced!! Go mow a lawn now...also a few cold 🥶 ones too.
Love your little laugh Joe at the end lol your pleasure that the tailstock slid right over the pin was our pleasure too. It's great to watch you work and explain your thoughts as you plan the work. A master at work is a pleasure to watch, and you are THE MASTER! Looking forward to your next instalment . Hope you enjoy your cold one or two after the grass cutting session!
I hope you heard my Applause, for this Fantastic bit of Machining! I have been watching you for ~Many Years~ and if I may Opine, this Video is in your TOP Five All Time BEST! philip, who has worked for Master Craftsmen (RIP, Ora Ed Thayer), from the Great Pacific NorthWET.
That little plate to be fitted on assemble is a tumbler for changing direction on old lathes - I used to own a Greenwood & Batley, that was originally a overhead line lathe - I converted it to a electric with a camry timing belt, instead of a leather flat belt to power the head - just in the off chance you did not know... Cheers Glenn
Would love to see how you machine the fixtures that you use to hold your parts. To me that is just as interesting as making the actual parts. Thank you for another great video!
Joe you are nothing short of amazing! One thing I can't understand is how you make it look so easy... you are an inspiration to me and I'm sure I'm not alone. Thank you! And welcome back I hope you've had a profitable run sense your last post. Please keep them coming !!!
Absolutely brilliant! The number of indirect precision measurements and dedicated setup fixtures is mind blowing! And that final matching test on the on the bed was orgasmic! Sorry, couldn't find more adequate words, as it was so intense! Bravo!
Hi Joe, After that performance I think you deserve at least two beers. It is really looking more like a real lathe than a model. Enjoy your mowing, and no doubt be thinking about the next episode. Regards Dennis
I am amazed time and again by your educative skills. I did not get your remark about the inline arrangement of headstock and tailstock UNTIL your started waving the pieces of cardboard at 20:00. The instant I saw I the issue “snapped” on me. I will never forget that lesson (save Alzheimer’s).
It would have been a shame to take all the prep time shown and overlook something so important. If there was an error, at least they were both the same. I may spin the headstock around and test my theory.
I cannot wait to see you turn something on this lathe and then inspect that turning to see just how accurate your meticulous setup and machining processes turned out to be. Outstanding work and precision.
I love the way the machined castings look. I went to a show a few years back and someone had made a model steam engine from castings but had machined and polished them so much you couldn't see any of the rough cast surfaces - he might as well have CNC milled them from billet stock, which is a shame. When you look at old machinery, there are all those rough castings with the machined surfaces where they need to be, and the look is beautiful. This model is looking just that way, in miniature! Loving this series Joe.
Beautiful precision work. Really appreciate your skills in sharing this beautiful model with us. Can’t get any better than this for a retired tool maker.
As always Joe, I am in awe of your work. I am nearly always lost for words when you show us content like this but please believe my immense appreciation even if I don't say so every time.
Your precision Joe is as ever impressive and your care - such a challenge on these tiny parts too. Phew, those V grooves were tight to jaws! Some brilliant use of custom jigs - inspired. Super work, sweet :)
Hi Joe, brilliant as always. This is making me think about things a lot more, things like making fixtures to do the machining more efficiently, I'll bet a lot of people on here will think the same. By the way, same thing with the weather here! I've already cut the grass and would be having a beer but I dont drink too often so it's diet coke for me! Thank you as always Joe, I very much appreciate you taking the time to do this. It really is quite humbling to see your skill levels. Regards from Wales
Thanks for taking us onboard this wonderful journey, Joe! This is so inspiring in so many ways, and I'm learning tons of things I even didn't know was there to be learned! Wish I will be able to do this myself, one day!
Oh, the sweet smell of success...Well done! It's a beautiful day here in SE England too... I've been lying on the couch watching your video, so I'll 'bug out' and finish clipping that hedge...then drink a cold beer too. Cheers!
And yet another amazing video... You have the best approach to your processes, A lot of thought that I'm sure we all can learn from. Thank Again Joe...
Another good one Joe! Thanks for sharing. Also I just placed my order for a grey t-shirt so glad to get one of these. I wanted blue but those are still not available in XXL. Thanks for your time and effort sir. I'm so happy you share you knowledge with us. I constantly learn and eagerly await the next video to see what tricks you have up your sleeve. My passion is machining and watching other machinist work and learning new tricks is priceless for me. Thanks again Joe!
Just Awesome and the amazing drill fixture blocks you made for that perfect fit :-) - i look forward to your posts all the time and am never disappointed. Thanks Joe.
Wow Joe that was awesome. Fixtures are well worth the effort to make. You have some serious skills. I need to step up my levels. Always a pleasure. Thanks for sharing
I really enjoy your work. Patience's is must on this as with all projects. I have watched ever minute so far. Thank you for sharing this great experience Joe..
I have had a 5 minute sprinkle in the last 5 weeks. all my plants show signs of sunburn and I hear everyone else around the country saying "I wish it would stop raining." oh well. thanks for the videos.
It's about time, buddy.
I was going through withdrawal 😉
That moment where you pushed the tailstock over the pin was pure perfection.
Awesome!
Excellent work Joe. I remember building a jig for a few hours to spend 2 minuted drilling a hole. Enjoy the beer.
Of course, we knew the tailstock bore was going to line up, but I can't blame you for the encore right at the end.👍
If it didn't, there were many ways to fix it, but it would have been a Pandoras box for sure. I needed it to work on the first try.
As things get more complicated and risky, you rise to the occasion. Outstanding work, Joe!
I agree! The fixturing is everything to this project!
Absolutely outstanding precision and machining Joe. A real joy to see.
Wow, that’s an awesome result Joe!!! Fantastic precision and beautiful job! Love watching your channel dude.
That last scene, so satisfying, keep doing what your doing Sir. You are doing it well!!!
This is by far the best machining series on UA-cam.
Thank you. You should also check out Chris over at Clickspring.
Love your attention to detail and your sense of what to pay attention too. Enjoy that beer.
When all else fails, break out a good file and make it fit. :)
Hi Joe,
That's a thing of beauty. I'm learning it's all in the fixtures. Enjoying this series. Have to go out mow the lawn here. Have a fun holiday and you and the family stay safe.
"there's a better chance of a quality hole, if it's uninterrupted" words to live by Joe!
First class machining. It is amazing to see you work on such tiny things and be so accurate. Keep on keeping on.
I'm loving this series, and this is the best yet. Outstanding machining to get two independent parts to line up on a third part within a thou. I suspect even high end watchmakers would applaud this performance. The fixture was the key to success on these.
This is so awesome! The tailstock sliding right over the spindle shaft at the end was just too perfect.
Thanks. It was the models way of saying thanks for taking the time to do it right.
Got love it when the plan come together. Your experience is showing again.
Very fine "hit the number" machining. As always sir, thank you for the excellent presentation.
I love it when a plan comes together and, this one is perfect.
It just gets more incredible as you go fantastic
After watching this video I realized that not only I couldn’t machine this part with any hope of success but I couldn’t even make the fixture to hold the part! But the machining tips and pearls of wisdom make it well worth watching.
Outstanding attention to detail. Nice work as always. Hope you enjoyed your well deserved cold beer!
Nice! Holy cows, that is a lot of work to get a couple holes aligned. On the other hand: 1, it worked; 2, it taught us a great deal about how to approach a problem like this with success. Thanks again Joe.
Thanks. Planning and execution is a huge part of this trade.
That is a beautiful fit. Love the series.
Excellent, thanks for time and effort.
The fixturing was brilliant on this part, damn impressive work Joe!
“It’s not easy to work and video ont he same time”. It’s good for all to realise that. When I build my models (Google me and you will find me) I make many photos and an occasional video and describing it all is quite time consuming. The bright side is you get to know many people to support and encourage you. Well done Joe!
It's also distracting, especially when you start out. When I have tried, it, I have ended up scrapping parts, something I normally do not do.
Wonderful foreshadowing of things to come...thanks, Joe
Joe. You amaze me with your DEAD ON work. I have spent a lifetime doing this and i would have at least 2 parts to do that kind perfect machining.
Thanks for showing some of us old timers some good tricks.
Imagine what we could all learn from each other. That would be awesome.
Very satisfying to see all details vfit together perfectly.
You are one of the masters among masters. But it’s about teaching and passing the knowledge on. Thanks for sharing.
Holy smokes Joe - that fit test at the end .. mind blowing .. love this series ..
Been waiting to see this done. What great results😊. Anxious to see the tumbler handle and gear train come to life.

The lawn is cut and the beer was most welcome.

A master at work is a pleasure to watch, and you are THE MASTER! Looking forward to your next instalment . Hope you enjoy your cold one or two after the grass cutting session!
Looking forward to the next series Joe. That's when you use this completed model to make a miniature of IT. 😉👍
I hope you heard my Applause, for this Fantastic bit of Machining!

philip, who has worked for Master Craftsmen (RIP, Ora Ed Thayer), from the Great Pacific NorthWET.
Thanks for the flattering comment. This piece was a bit more technical than I initially thought.
Great job again Joe, truly the proof is in the pudding! Enjoyed, cheers and enjoy that beer!
Like you said location, location and fixture is the key. With the proper fixture you will machine perfect parts. Great job Joe.
How can anyone give a thumbs down? Lets see them do a better job!
Not having dimensions makes me nuts!!
Don't you just love it when you know those holes will line up and they do. You the man!
Thanks. I wanted to hit that feature for my own peace of mind.
All I can say is WOW! Do you ever miss the numbers? Amazing!
I try not to.
Would love to see how you machine the fixtures that you use to hold your parts. To me that is just as interesting as making the actual parts. Thank you for another great video!
Joe, you are an exceptional machinist. Wow
Thank you. 👍
One of the most skilled tool and die makers I have ever watched or worked with.

The fun you're having comes thru on the video. Nice, and thanks for the great content
Nice work Joe. Thanks for another great and informative video.
Why do I feel like I wouldn't have a prayer getting that kind of fit?
Awesome work Joe!!!
Absolutely brilliant! The number of indirect precision measurements and dedicated setup fixtures is mind blowing! And that final matching test on the on the bed was orgasmic! Sorry, couldn't find more adequate words, as it was so intense! Bravo!
I held my breath. It really came out nice. I was pleased.
Hi Joe,

Drumroll not necessary, but a round of applause is. Well done Joe!
Can't imagine the level of patience you have with the size of these parts
It does make you think harder. I love a challenge.

The fixture you made (with the machined ways) belongs in The Machinists Museum. It is a work of art! I had to pause the video just to study it.
The real beauty is that I could do another 100 just as accurate.
Beautiful precision work. Really appreciate your skills in sharing this beautiful model with us. Can’t get any better than this for a retired tool maker.
That last shot, where the pin aligned with the tailback bore, I know how good that feels. Nicely done!!
Joe, you crack me up. You said "I hope this works." I have a hunch you knew it would work. Thanks for another great video.
I had a hunch too. Thanks.
I look forward to the videos in this series more than anything on the UA-cams at the moment. Great work thanks.
As always Joe, I am in awe of your work. I am nearly always lost for words when you show us content like this but please believe my immense appreciation even if I don't say so every time.
The aluminum clamp/block as a drill guide, stroke of genius!

Excellent. Glad to help.
Awesome job Joe, thank you for your time and efforts to bring this to us!
May you and yours stay safe, healthy, & prosperous!
Thank you. Same to you.
Thanks Joe. Very satisfying!
Impressed as ever Joe!
Thank you for letting us into your world.
Incredible work sir.

It's a beautiful day here in SE England too...
I've been lying on the couch watching your video, so I'll 'bug out' and finish clipping that hedge...then drink a cold beer too.

Probably one of the most butt clenching operations of this whole project... making sure the spindle and tailstock lined up. Good job Joe!
I'm happy with the results.
That fixture though, genius Joe genius
I've learnt so much from you
Philosophy is just as important as execution. Glad I can help.
You win the Nobel Prize for machining.
Thank you for the thought.
This Model is definitively more precise than my chinese hobby lathe :-)
Great job!
Impressive precision. Awesome job
It’s Beer time. 😁 well deserved. Time invested into fixtures makes perfect parts. Thanks for another excellent lesson. 👍👍😎👍😎
Nice one Joe. Very nicely done!
Again, a real treat!!! Thanks Joe. Can't wait for the final product.
Again, jaw dropping. Every step well thought over. Great fixture and super precise result. Cheapo.
Thank you.

Great job Joe - You are a great machinist! I learn a lot from Your video's. I can't wait to see this lathe running.
