28:32 "1/3 for 1 with upside... so we're likely dead."
Classic line. 10/10
It's a but mismatched I think, I think the reverse would probably been better, where Reynard gets the modern decks with like a 3 word description or something and rarran plays patron. Reasoning being that patron needs to know the other deck, since they are a combo or board control deck depending on the matchup, so knowing what outs the other deck has is kinda important for correct piloting. Still, I love every video with Reynad, since I believe in his design philosophy for cars games. So keep up the good work 😊
Reynad's statement at the start of the video about patron warrior having a 45% win rate in it's time is spot on. When you built your patron warrior deck you had to learn by losing what you had to do to win, simply because you had to learn what to play around and how to approach matches. Personally I didn't win a match as warrior for about 2 weeks while learning patron warrior.
Decks now don't care what the opponent is doing they play their gameplan they win, because "hurr durr power crept overpowered cards that do literally everything." C'mon a 2 mana pump and draw? that costed at least 3 mana at the start of Hearthstone. Card generation is also nuts to a classic player, 50% of the cards you play in modern decks didn't start in your deck.
@@NicholasBalanta Too be fair I want to say that a lot of that is just death knight. Death knight is since its release just insane value, do everything, discover the best cards in the game, win the game. I think the current druid archetype is something you can play around and can know what you play against. I feel like the current new cards are shifting in a good direction and if there will ever be a meta again, where I will enjoy watching Esport for the game, it will prob be, when cards like the songs are good enough, for the meta game.
@@gonoroad2160 you mean the current druid archetype of having 15 mana crystals turn 5?
@@gonoroad2160 yeah druid is probably one of the least rng classes in standard right now, they don't generate anything and they draw their entire deck every game mostly so they can have a consistent game plan. Compared to other classes who lack draw and tutor, they have to rely on random wincons for example. Druid is cool, feels like playing a different card game where you actually play an entire deck out every match.

Reynad really does just give such fantastic insight. He’s the perfect guest for Rarran to have. While Rarran likes to approach his videos with the idea that his audience is quite new to hearthstone. Reynad provides perspective on what hearthstone was like in a VERY different time, and uses his knowledge to then analyse what’s changed in the game when it comes to card and deck design since he’s left.
Keep bringing him on!
As someone who's played HS ever since the "beginning" of the game, I completely understand Reynad's pain. It's so ass seeing a deck like Implock going full aggro with cards like the 2 mana draw 7 spell and the library, but then once you think you've stabilized the late game, they completely side-step the imp plan and just start dropping curses.
Same with the old Rogue turn 3 15/15 stealthed ghosts, the whole Stormwind meta... I miss being able to play around stuff, at least relatively well. Nowadays every card just does so much a single Discover effect basically means you can't play around anything, you're just shooting darts and hoping that your gameplan comes online before the opponent's.
Could not agree more. Nowadays aggro decks generate so much value and card draw, you just can't hope to last against them
Glad Marvel Snap came out 🤞🤞
It’s not just standard. Arena is a shit show now.
Yep, discover originally was something from a very limited pool, and usually you lost bunch of tempo when playing it... but then they decided fuck it, discover is a free mechanic, it rewards tempo plays and allows you to find answers and more tempo... like wtf?
~A good example is the aggro paladin right now(I used it to get legend this month, sorry) it's a aggro deck, that later has the Countess that rewards you by playing strong tempo, and lending the last breath you need to finish your opponent, sometimes you miss, but usually you win, the only deck that realistic can survive after Countess is Blood DK but it's another super strong deck....
@@Cuestrupaster You’re right. Discovery is such a double edged sword. It adds more variety to games and prevents matches from getting too stale… on the other hand, it gives players so much power and makes it damn near impossible to play around stuff.
And they really went balls to the wall with the mechanic. You use to get a 2/2 for three mana for discovery. Now you get a 2/4 with a 2 mana discount on the spell discovered.
6:16 destroyed my soul
Big same
Same it just hurt my eyes
Came here to commiserate. Couldn’t understand how he didn’t see it.
It destroyed mine in hindsight
@@Rarran this one of those plays thatll haunt you before closing your eyes at night, If you need to talk about it were here.
Reynad’s tangent about identity is super spot on. The classes used to mean so much more than a hero power, they all had defined strengths and weaknesses that were deliberate and thematic to create meaningful asymmetric styles. Mage had low board presence but strong clears. Hunter had wide board play but lacked verticality. Paladin sacrificed early game tempo for late game dominance. Modern hearthstone is so far gone from that every deck in standard is just aggro with enough removal to ignore your opponents board, and every game is a face race that ends by turn 8 unless you’re running a very niche control deck.
Reynad looks like he's either suffering badly from allergies or is desperately in need of sleep... and he still delivers the plays and the wit!
My guess is that he's on vacation. HIs pc has a 4:3 screen ratio, he had latency on his plays, the room behind him is different and the fan turning even in april probably means he's somewhere hotter than he's used to.
Also the puffy eyes could be jetlag too
he's always a lil blinky in these, bro needs some eyedrops
Also he smokes a lot of Pot

Absolutely ZERO Misplays in this video! Subscribe!
Surprised about the amount of comments of saying how unfun this was for Reynad, he knew what the video was before recording. He also seen what current hearthstone looks like twice (one with deathknight and one with demon hunter). He knew what he was getting into, and what the concept of the video was. We do not just start a call and record, we plan out the idea before we set up a date to record.
Find that hard to believe
my god the amount of misplays, even ignoring the first game. Not hellfiring first at 6:10 and missing 8 damage with the giant, but I guess whatever, we just draw the hellfire number 2.
Love you mr Rarran, but git gud nerd
I deserve the criticism, to be fair, this was recorded way past my bed time lol
Remember, anything perceived as a misplay was actually done on purpose for content. Rarran obviously knows exactly what he's doing. The biggest brain 5 year old ever playing hearthstone.
I know you gotta sandbag from time to time to get Reynoodle, the Card Wizard Extraordinaire, to keep coming back, we all understand
Always happy to see Reynad on this channel!!
Idk why but my phone made
"Always happy to see rarran on Reynad's channel" out of this
He is basically the side character that people like more
Man Reynad is just so right about modern Hearthstone. It makes me so sad because some of the approaches with faster rebalancing and actually buffing cards would've made me love old HS even more.
I remember when I played in Reynad's time, bad cards got complained a lot. Like Purify. People don't like playing bad cards. Money talks and they shifted away. 2 mana Fiery War Axe will probably still see play today, see how it dominated Frost DK perfect opener? It is that good, in an era with chillwind yeti being relevant. People like playing cards like that. Blizzard basically slowly ramp every card to be that level. We just have to admit that the decks we were playing were just arena level inconsistent and un-synergistic decks.
@@zhuzhong74 bad cards were complained about when they were given to classes that were bad
Priest was the weakest it had ever been when they printed purify, meanwhile Shaman got shit like 4 mana 7/7
@@spencerweiss6337 ahhh, the good old days when we thought a '4 mana overload 2' card was insane. wtf happened

Reynad didnt seem like he had fun towards the end, maybe if it was the other way around and he was playing with the evolution of hearthstone meta decks. I appreciate the handwork with this video, it was a fun watch but as soon as it was Libram Paladin and Frost Deathknight, it felt bad to watch. Thank you for inviting Reynad, keep up the good work.
Yeah the end was so funny. Classic reynad rage he should react to more new cards. They're all so broken.
He had Reynad play patron because it’s a high skill deck he’s used to
Rarran playing it vs reynad playing with decks he has never tried doesn’t do anything to show whether it can hold up in current hearthstone
I dropped hs in 2021. Libram paladin and specifically the 2 mana buff spell that aways get back to the hand just granted to paladin a deck without bad matchups. all decks run silent spells but it just wasnt enough since all classes have ways to discover cards out of their deck.
You should let Reynad run wild with all of the cards that have been released since, but using them for a patron warrior shell.
Man, I love Reynad. He is so chill yet cocky but also self-aware. Great video as always, Rarran!
Reynad probably knew how frustrating this challenge would be as it went on into the later decks, and he was still a great sport about it and treated it like an experiment. Hope he absorbs these experiments, and puts the knowledge gained towards the design for Bazaar
“Seal these nuts Rannan” literally made my day. Thanks for making these videos man getting fresh content plus Noodle feature is so good.
34:05 Reynad spilling the truth
Watched two of the matches and headed down to the comments for this timestamp.
The answer to the video title is no, and Reynad spells out why here
Very true, modern HS is like modern retail wow, every class just has all the things and no one class feels as unique as what it once was
@@trevsguitarstash4967 Every game with continuous updates go down that road. Its why people return to a lot of older games because they have not been tainted by the whole "Everything must be 100% balanced all the time" mentality that is killing diversity of gameplay within games.
@@TheRealCHIMShadynot all of them PoE does it right
If the idea is "Patron would be cool in standard" it would've been cool to see multiple patron decks using different cards to match the years of the decks Rarran was playing
It’s awesome seeing how good Reynad is. Dude doesn’t even know the decks and has pretty good predictions
I think he would be a monster if he took new hearthstone seriously.
@@ZeRoUnload hearthstone is so unbalanced nowadays that nobody can take it seriously. Rarran beats all adventures on heroic with just 3 meta decks, where previously you needed to actually think and make a new deck for every boss
The cut back to Rarran at 23:49 had me dying, so freaking funny
Seal deez nuts got me.
17:06 The best Rarran Raza play. We love to see it.
I feel like it was a bit unfun near the end, reynad being required to use old cards the whole way through made it so that later games felt way too one sided. I think it would have been a lot better if the idea had been "make a patron deck with cards up to x year"
This was the way to go.
@@tmdiz4579 no it isn’t? The point of the video is seeing if an old deck can hold up, otherwise it’s a wild video and reynad will be playing with cards he doesn’t know, doesn’t want to pay for, and a list he hasn’t practised
Almost as if that is the point, seeing if an old deck can hold up and showing the powercreep
Adding new cards both defeats the point of the video, and the point of reynad being the one to play it. It’d be a new list he hasn’t practised with new cards he doesn’t know or want to buy
If reynad won every single game I wonder if you’d complain about the concept of the video
@@johnhemsley3790 You'd have to be on drugs to think Patron has even a slight chance against anything in the past few years
i see reynad, i see patron warrior, i press like, im a simple man, i get in there.
Reynad looked so miserable by the end 😂 would love to see him playing some of the newer decks.
Car-niv-or-us, say it with me now, carnivorous 😂
Reynad reminiscing on what hearthstone used to be is literally me every time i log on
This was a really fun video, even though the games weren't close at the end because that was kinda the point. Seeing Reynad rage was one of the reasons we used to watch him.
6:14 that misplay killed my hope for Rarran to ever become a good player xD
bro if you think hearthstone takes very much skill your funny. 90% of decks you just play the cards you get and regardless of matchup you mulligan for the same 5 cards the only thing that changes the higher rank you go is the powerlevel of decks

deffo switch the sides! I want to see rarran play around the new decks/cards while Reynad gets to explore the different archetypes that have been meta over the years!
"Why don't you seal these nuts Rarran?" got me so bad 😂
I think Reynad should had a deck list of your decks. Since he has no idea what could come out. But you knew his entire deck list and tech usage
Love your videos with Reynad! Reynad piloting Grim Patron is best way to check how good this deck is.
But last two matches, especially DK was just bullying him, poor Reynad! 😢
I'd really like to see Reynad playing old deck archetypes improved with new cards.
I think letting Reynad update the Grim Patron deck would've been more interesting to see, the old deck kinda just got stomped whenever Rarran drew even remotely well. Interesting format idea, though.
wouldve been interesting to see it updated for each format, like see how it couldve evolved over the years
Everyone talking about 6:16 misplay, but the one at 26:00 was definetely more painful for me, hitting the armoursmith instead of sparing the weapon charge for next turn so he could coin into glaivehound to deal with the berserker ooof 😫
Another exciting episode of "Rarran bullies Raynad in the game he hates which he hasn't played in 5 years"
Great video idea Rarran! Your series with Reynad is my favourite. Please do a video with him regarding the new expansion! Also I would really love to see a series with him where you give him access to the current standard cards and see him create some fun decks!
ALWAYS look forward to the Reynad content. So good. I feel like you singlehandedly brought him back to the Hearthstone content world, and for that, we are incredibly grateful, Raran!
I really like seeing the videos where you guys use older decks, really wish you could set it so only certain expansions were in the duscover pool but you work with what you got. Always fun to see you guys collab and have absolutely ZERO misplays...
Reynad looks like he didn't really enjoy this all to much 😅.
You think so?
He looks really annoyed with how Hearthstone has turned out and how classes don't seem to really have their own separate identity now and every class can pretty much doing everything without any real downside.
I don't blame him. You can especially tell he hated that last game with the Death Knight.
@@terrancesilvermistbenjamin9864 I don't disagree with him on that point. You could tell how annoyed he was on that last game.
@@terrancesilvermistbenjamin9864 I mean if you watched any old reynad you'd know he's not really having a bad time. More just some good natured gamer rage
Him being salty and upset is basically his brand. Actually 95% of all HS creators freak out at RNG nonsense or OP shit like it the first time they have played the game. Like I literally stopped reacting to nonsense in the game cause it happens every game lol. If I walk up to you and use actual magic IRL, probably freak out. The 1000th time though you probably would not bat an eye. However, for whatever reason that brand still gets clicks. Reynad back when he played would get so mad sometimes it had to be forced cause no reasonable person would behave that way over a digital card game with no stakes. In a tourney setting with money on the line? Sure I be upset if RNG and high rolls screwed me, but thats a tourney. I literally know very few HS creators that do not make a big show in some form over HS being HS. Reynads skill and knowledge of the game and card games in general are impressive, but fake salt gets old, but I must be in a minority.
Reynad not even knowing what he's playing against and still playing so well is so sick
This is the best Hearthstone content on youtube.
Rarran keep killing it
Reynad keep killing it.
I love the insight every turn, very entertaining
34:05 Reynad is the GOAT... he doesn't even play the game and managed to pin point the issues in 30 mins, make this man the hearthstone lead dev ffs.
Big fan of seeing reynad. Was one of my favorites from the old days. Hearthstone content isn’t half as good as it used to be. I’m glad we have Rarran
I liked the video. I think a good variation of this would be to update the old decklist with cards that are available on the same year as the newer decks. Every year might not offer good cards to switch which could mean skipping years and playing less matches? Either way this was fun, it’s always fun to see both Rarran and Reynad in a video.
Man, Reynad is a real salt mine, great stuff
Reynad looked in pain this entire video 😂😂
I feel like it should have been an updated patron deck to show that patron is still viable in metas
6:15 actually physically hurt me. Cmon Rarran
The grass is always greener is such a true saying. In the old days, we looked forward to the new expansion excited to see what the game will become after they add more, in the new days we look back on the old expansions wishing we could go back to that meta and have the same feeling. The truth is they both have their problems and as much as power creep has changed the game, newer more powerful things also made it exciting to play (and kept people playing) to begin with.
A few value trades mattering or not decided games in the old days, and also one dead draw or an early turn skip decided games. It wasn't exactly as interactive as we all remember, and it was always RNGstone. Today our opponents random discover into win cons before we draw the one we put in our deck and we say "that never would have happened in old Hearthstone - if I got unlucky I would just draw air be miserable and die, man I miss that".
Reynad is very good at articulating how HS changed over the years, and why it's not necessarily gotten better. I like seeing him on the channel, his perspective is great
God reynad is so good, the sheer discipline to not play cards vs that priest for so long
Game isn't like that anymore, but i can't even imagine being like "oh i don't care about tempo, I'll float 30 mana" in anything that isn't hard control
good you uploaded the short. did not notice, there's a reynad grim patron battle :D
6:14 Rarran, the ghoul dies to Hellfire too, the giant could go face.
30 seconds? Damn, last time I was that early the doctors told my mom that I wasn't going to make it
Reynads comment on lack of Identity is such a mood, as an MTG player it's something I run into too, when cardgames lose identity and every deck is just "good" the game loses charm and strategy very quickly
I want more Reynad but at the same time we can't expose him to too much power creep before it becomes the standard he expects. It's hilarious seeing his reaction to broken cards.
Haven’t played HS since reynad era, video really brought me back
@17:14 Classic Reynad, never change
To what reynad said at the end, there is a version of this in wild right now. It's not amazing, but it is a lot better. Cards like risky skipper, imbued axe, and warsong envoy really help it reach that burst potential, while to the front lets you combo much earlier. Plus the deck got its very own pot of greed last expansion, which you always love to see!
This was a good video showcasing how old decks like patron warrior just can't hold a candle to any of the newer archetypes. It's like reynad said, you have to play around everything, creatures, board wipes, card advantage, aggro, combo, card generation all in a single deck for every class. Honestly still feel like patron warrior is just not good enough in wild when you have so many horrible match ups that are just insta lose.
1:30 I think this is my only actual issue with this video. I love the idea of “the most popular old school archetype is back on the menu, so I got everyone’s favorite old school player to try it against the new decks”, but wouldn’t it have been more interesting to see what someone like Reynad makes of the archetype with all of the new tools Warrior has gotten over the years? It’d be a really cool way of seeing his deckbuilding skills in a fresh new context, and maybe he might have enjoyed the new cards a little more if he got to play them himself, rather than being powerless against them. Those last couple matchups almost felt like bullying.
i love to see reynad play and hear his opinions. him bringing up class identity struck so well with me.
Great video Rarran! I think your collabs are some of your best content - the stitching together of the two perspectives works so well. Always nice to see zero misplays ;)
more reynad is always great, i love these colabs so much
I could feel the salt when it came to the last deck, the power creep was insane!
Would love to see more like this! Maybe even some expansion vs expansion or something (like best deck in witchwood vs best deck in darkmoon etc)
Yeaaahh man this just looks so unfun to deal with.
I just sat there feeling so bad for Reynad the entire video, and how depressing it is to see what the game has become for an old veteran. Good on him for toughing through it though.
would love to see him play an up to date updated patron deck
It’s interesting to see the matchup triangle of Combo v Control v Aggro throughout the ages.
I nearly died when reynad said “why don’t you seal these nuts rarran” lmao
I think a lot of people missed the point of the challenge. It was to compare Patron warrior of old "As is it was back then" to other popular tier 1 decks of other time periods, also taken as is. Sure, having access to all wild format cards would make patron warrior a lot better, but that's also true for Raza priest, or "release day DH", or giants mage, etc.
Though, I am grateful that the unfavorable matchups at the end lead to my favourite type of content, which is "Reynad complains about stuff"
I think everybody understands the premise, it just isn't interesting for them.
Myself, you, and everyone else loves when you bring Reynad in! so keep up the the content! Also Snnuy!
Subscribed, thanks for the VS gameplay, it helped fix my Hearthstone jones!

20:21 Remember when discovering cards used to cost mana? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
I think it’s funny that as the games go on it just becomes old man yells at clouds
I love seeing the complete disgust in Reynad's face when he sees powercreep
Rarran I love your laugh man 😂
Reynad and Rarran in a video make any type of video fun to watch.
Ive gotta say i think the priest match was some of the most interesting hearthstone ive seen in years, it wasnt just mindless throw stuff onto the board and generate as much random bs as possible and try to win. there was actual calculation
Nothing makes me click one of your videos faster than seeing Reynad in the thumbnail
I LOVE THIS COLLAB YALL ARE GREAT
Would you consider doing this again except allowing him to use more modern cards? I don't think anyone is really experimenting with Patron, so it'd be fun to see.
This video was great! I loved the concept quite a lot.
I haven't played Hearthstone in God knows how long. Holy moly what did they do to Apprentice?
It is interesting, though, to see Reynad's insight into modern Hearthstone, and card games that go long in general: that they run the risk of losing their identity, when everything blends together.
nice job with those exter carnivious cubes
can't believe i live the day to see Reynad come back to youtube again
today is a special day
best part of these is rarran actually thinking he will win
Reynard shaking his head at DK… I felt that
Reynad at 34:05 is so real, I was thinking exactly that while watching the games, Blizzard almost always have problems maintaining their games, it starts off as a masterpiece then turns into garbage with updates, really fucking annoying to be honest
i mean hearthstone's most balanced state was in classic, Naxx and GVG both put the game into a fundamentally unbalanced state that every expansion and adventure would try to pull themselves out of, but it only dug deeper. It's hysterical to think that the wild format was meant to slow the game down. Now we have a deck that was so overpowered they had to nerf it before a tournament literally unable to compete with modern decks.
if you stopped playing some years ago, you should stay stopped, and never come back to the game, because you will cry as most of the cards you unpacked are worthless, and you'll have to basically demolish your collection in order to craft competitive cards.
I would love to see Reynad try out duels. Think it would be cool to see his skill in deck building fare in that format. Maybe with you as guide!
I see rarran and reynad playing hearthstone, I instaclick :D
Reynad deserves a rematch where he can make a patron deck using modern cards.
This was a fun concept! if reynad is down for it i would like to see how he would update old decks with new cards, i think it would be a cool evolution on this format. who am i kidding, i just want to see reynad play more hearthstone lmao
This video is sooo good. You have great synergy with Reynad. Keep it up!
Rarran, self proclaimed Warlock main.
Also Rarran: "I don't know how to play Cubelock for the life of me..." bruh.
Love to see Reynad though
Attacking with the Giant and using Hellfire to clear while as Warlock, instead of just, you know, using the Hellfire which would have done the job itself, is sending me.
Lol I thought I was missing something since even reynad didn't seem to catch that
