Thank you so much! This is my favorite comparison review of these microphones on all of UA-cam!!! :-) I find the A->B comparisons in the voice over booth so helpful for judging which sound I prefer, and the comparisons of self-noise and output levels are really useful as they give an indication of how much gain each microphone would need (comparatively) and how much noise they introduce to the signal. This should be the standard procedure for comparing microphones. Now we just need Sound Devices to give you one of their multi-track recorders so you have access to some of the best preamps available. Excellent video!!!
Sure did, I've watched it many times :-) Too bad about the sound booth. I've ordered some parts and will eventually endevour make a fairly low cost DIY semi-portable sound booth for voice overs. If it turns out okay I might give you the parts list.
Great review! Question: When using the NTG 4 with phantom power, do I have to press the high boost button every time I turn the camera on? Or does it remember the setting?
A very realistic test, thanks for that. Well, in my opinion the clearer sound of the Sennheiser is based on the missing Hz in the deep. Like...most people push an EQ upwards to change a sound - but they could do that in the other direction...but 95% didn't realise that way of sound-design. Here we have the same problem. But the difference between the NTG2 and 4 ? Not worth to upgrade for me, so this comparison was very helpfull, thanks again! Michael
ME66 / K6 is my choice! nice crisp sound. The NTG2 does sound better than the 4 in this test. I have the NTG2 and now getting the Sennheiser ME66 in a few days. I was contemplating between the rode NTG4 plus and the ME66. From this test I could hear that the ME66 sounds the best to my ears. Thank you for the review.
hi, I just bought a brand new RODE NTG 4. I wanted to try out my new microphone by using my audio interface, steinberg ci2+, which feed the mic with phantom power. and for the result, i got no signal at all!! even the mic didn't turn on at all. i called the seller and he told me that it will only turn on if i connect the mic to a camcorder. is it true? or is it an issue from the mic itself? (have tried my phantom for another condenser and it worked!!)
Not true that a mic will only work from a camcorder, that's nonsense. I don't know that audio interface so I'll have to look it up and get back to you later.
OK, I've had a look. Are you certain you switched the input on the CI2+ to "mic" and not "line", and had the "high z" turned off? Was phantom power definitely turned on? Do you have another device you can plug the NTG4 into and check that the mic is working OK with that?
TubeShooterMag Thankyou so much for your reply, i really appriciate your effort to check the ci2+ just for my specific case. I have tried another condensor microphone (my behringer b1) and have tried connecting to my audio interface with the exact same setting. It turns out that the mic just work perfectly fine. My concern is that the rode ntg4 that arrived recently to my house was actually broken. what do you think?
Have you got any other device you can plug the NTG4 into, to try it with something else? It is certainly possible you could have a broken unit, it must happen occasionally.
well, i did not test it on a sound recorder, but, I have a mixer (Behringer xenyx x1222usb) and have tried to connect them as well, and the result is just the same. I have complained and returned the microphone to the seller so I can get a new microphone. I'm now just hoping for the best. btw, thanks for helping me :) Goodluck...
My ears aren't trained that well but it almost sounds to me like the ntg2 has a higher dynamic range and has less noise than the ntg4. Anyone else with better trained ears notice this too?
Nicely done +TubeShooterMag I love the way you clearly highlighted the differences between the mics with audio samples. Appreciated your review thanks.
The Sennheiser sounds the best by far. So clean. The Rodes sounded hollow, lesser quality and muffled. Really surprising. Amazing review. Very technical and well thought through.
thanks for the video. You actually answered one question I was having about the NTG4+ and what happens to it once it's disconnected from phantom power source.
What a great Review! The best I have seen on the comparison of these mics and really contained everything I wanted to know. I found your opinion at the end very helpful and unbiased [no pun intended]. ...still don't know which one to get though :-) I suppose, like you I like my raw audio to have the right amount of "top"..but a little bass can mean a stronger signal.....hmmm...will need to listen to all of this again with cans on. Thanks again for an excellent review. I subscribed. Good luck with you channel mate.
Great review. Doesn't seem like there is much improvement with the two more expensive microphones. I am somewhat surprised but will stay with my NTG2. My poor ears could not tell almost any benefits from the NTG4.
Nice comparison ;) I'm curious about the NTG4 vs NTG3, the 4 looks a great mic and I understand the NTG3 its an up level but would be interesting to see a compare between those too. Great work. Cheers.
Thank you! Unfortunately I don't have access to an NTG3 but as you rightly say, it is a different class of mic so perhaps an unfair (albeit interesting) comparison really.
Finding this review couldn't be more timely as i'm looking at the exact mics! Thank you for the great efforts. I'm looking for my first shotgun mic for Zoom and talking head (dont' want anything on the camera) and my criteria is simple: the best noise rejcection that competes a standrd dynamic, and Budget within $500. It will not leave my noisy room as it wlll pointed above the camera. Regardless of the sound quality, which one do you recommend? I'm sure any of them would be better the Video Mic NTG that picks up everyting .. help ? :)
I haven't tested sufficient shotgun mics to give you a solid answer, unfortunately - I would strongly recommend you take a look at Curtis Judd's channel, he is the sound recording guru for this kind of thing. See ua-cam.com/users/curtisjudd
Great test, thanks! My slight concern with the NTG4 is the buttons and whether they get in the way at all when placing the mic in a shock mount (like the SM5) or pistol grip, just wondering if you have any thoughts on this at all? I'm looking more at the standard 4 rather than the plus, so it doesn't have that bit of extra length. cheers :)
This is a great comparison, thanks for putting together. All would make a perfectly usable recording, but I find myself preferring the ME66 in your test. I don't really like the MKH 416 either. I find the 8060 hard to beat, its just superb- but it is nearly four times the price. I think its a classic case of getting what you pay for. Which is not to say one couldn't do something perfectly reasonable with any of the mics at this end of the market, but once I was spoiled by the MKH 60 and then 8060, it changed my frame of reference. Like I said, it depends on your personal preference. Plus "a set" could be anything so I can't judge. Sorry, it's just not something I can say "this one" or "that one" for, it's not that simple.
I am pretty sure I wouldn't buy the NTG4+ because of the built-in battery. A microphone of this quality should outlast that battery. I've go a mic that is nearly 20 years old that still works great. +ALWYN THOMAS SAJI They are both very good microphones. The NTG4 is the successor to the NTG1, the NTG4+ is the successor to the NTG2. The NTG4/4+ will sound slightly better but not enough to worry about if you can get a good deal on an NTG2.
Nicely done...thanks a lot. I have an NTG4 which I use with Zoom H6 but it has this characteristic windy sound at the background, even when recording in door. How do I deal with this?
Windy sound? You mean actual wind noise or something else? If the former, turn on the low cut filter (it's one of the buttons). If that fails, put the foam windshield on. If that fails put a furry windjammer on. If the noise isn't actually wind then you'll need to describe it so I can come up with suggestions.
Curious. Is the sound only there between dialogue (does it rise in volume as the dialogue ends and fall when it re-starts) or is it a constant level? Does it sound like a mains voltage hum (50 or 60Hz depending on where in the world you are?)
Exactly, it rises when dialogue ends... Someone suggested, was the voltage that was too low I was using 12, now i use 48 which the mic needs and it's better...thanks a lot for your help. I keep you posted.
A short one, so that it doesn't stick out too far at the front and end up in the picture when you're zoomed wide. I don't know the dimensions of the mic holder, specifically how wide it is, but you probably want something like an Audio Technica ATR875R but check the diameter first to see it'll fit.
+FLAMA Because the NTG4/4+ are updates to the NTG1 & 2 whereas the NTG3 is a completely different mic with a different order of sound etc. In other words, they're not really comparable because you wouldn't be looking to buy one of those mics as an alternative to the other.
***** I don't mean to be rude but I have no idea how you expect me to answer this! "How well?" is not a question that can realistically be quantified in absolute terms. It's a good mic so it works "very well", generally. What I would say is that, as far as I understand your query, that's exactly what most people would do with it (I'm presuming that by "a camera with XLR" you mean a camcorder with XLR balanced audio inputs. I don't know of any *camera* that offers XLR inputs apart from perhaps the GH4 but even that's via an optional adapter box) The quality of recording would be affected by the quality of the camera's pre-amps just as any mic or other sound source would. You need the K6 powering module to go with your ME66 of course, they tend to come as a pair.
Ntg2 sounds better than ntg4+ I when to b&h and this gentlemen said to me dont spend 400 dollars in a microphone that is not that good he will show the difference so we tested and the ntg2 sounds way better has more natural sound then ntg4+
+Empire Films It's up to you. Clearly I can't decide for you. It depends on your budget and what sound you like the best. Assuming by "Sennheiser" you mean the ME66/K6 then they're both good mics.
I like the ME66 but maybe that's just because I've used it an awful lot. Otherwise, the NTG4 or 4+ with the treble boost turned on gives a nice crisp sound to my ears.
Thank you finally someone who dose mic test right.
Great comparison, thanks for this!
Hey Curtis, thanks. That's a huge compliment coming from you. Love your channel. :-)

Absolutely pro! Great comparison on relevant mics, towards each other. Loved every second of this!
Thank you!
Sennheiser ME66 / K6 sounds good in every video and environment I have seen! :)
Great review! Question: When using the NTG 4 with phantom power, do I have to press the high boost button every time I turn the camera on? Or does it remember the setting?
As far as I remember, it remembers the setting but I wouldn't swear to it. But the button should light up so you'll see if it's not on.
An excellent real-world fair comparison. Thank you for your efforts.
Thanks for the comment, much appreciated!

Intemporally great video, helped me making the choice few months ago! & I ended up with... the Me66+Me64 K6 ;) No regret ^^
Been waiting for an NTG4/+ review. Thanks, nicely done, although having heard it I think I'm going to stump up for the NTG 3
Rycote will approve!! Cheers

InternetAndDigital all things considered I think I'll go with the NTG 4+ based on sound quality and power options
wow I just bought an ntg4+ but this video makes me wish I got the sennheiser
is it just me or the ntg 2 sounds better than the ntg 4??
I thought so too.
I did so too.
me too
NTG4 it's better xD
Not you its true ntg2 sounds way better than ntg4+
Nice Review the Sennheiser had a real nice crisp mid to high frequency sound, the the Rode NTG4 had more of a midrange sound
The ME 66 is surprisingly good.
Nice test , personal I prefer the Sennheiser MKE 600 ( similar price as the Rode NTG4 )
This is a GREAT review, test and comparison! Now i'll scratch the ntg4 for a ntg2.
Nice comparison, NTG 4+, and NTG 4 sound quality are same?
you the best video reviewer on youtube - keep it up
i subbed
thank you - u really working hard for us - you the best ever
Very kind, thank you.
Very nice. I have the NTG2 and I think it's pretty good. But the Sennheiser shines here...
Thanks for a great video.
Thank you.
I would listen to you read books for hours. Excellent narration skills.
Thank you!
Great review really enjoyed it and will be going for the Sennheiser ME66. Thanks again
It's a nice mic; cheers
I think NTG2 sounds to me the best - the clearest and most balanced. I am not owner of any yet.
It could be the possition - maybe there was better for NTG2 - just little - than for others? Every parameter counted.
Thank you for doing this. Well done.
Great review. Doesn't seem like there is much improvement with the two more expensive microphones. I am somewhat surprised but will stay with my NTG2. My poor ears could not tell almost any benefits from the NTG4.
nice interesting tests, thank you
150 hours is Swiz bank for a shoot...power won't be issue I feel...but if battery is gone in few years will it still work in Phantom power still??
Nice comparison ;)
I'm curious about the NTG4 vs NTG3, the 4 looks a great mic and I understand the NTG3 its an up level but would be interesting to see a compare between those too.

I like it better with the high boost turned on as well.
What did you use for recording the first part of this video? Your voice sounds the best there.
Not sure but it was probably the Rode NT-USB direct into a PC.
Great test, thanks! My slight concern with the NTG4 is the buttons and whether they get in the way at all when placing the mic in a shock mount (like the SM5) or pistol grip, just wondering if you have any thoughts on this at all? I'm looking more at the standard 4 rather than the plus, so it doesn't have that bit of extra length. cheers :)
Doesn't seem to be a problem, they're recessed almost flush with the body so don't get pushed accidentally in my experience. Cheers.
Cool, thanks!
Brilliant test. Cheers
This is a great comparison, thanks for putting together. All would make a perfectly usable recording, but I find myself preferring the ME66 in your test. This is worrying as its a mic I've never really liked, although I accept comparing it to a MKH60 is unfair.
To my tastes there is too much LF which robs it of clarity, but that can be improved with EQ. What cannot sadly be improved is the noise.
All said and done, I will still probably add one to my mic bag, as for the money it's difficult to go wrong.
JackPott554 thanks. I'm curious to know what your preferred mic over the ME66 is (within a reasonable price bracket)?
TubeShooterMag Tricky, truth is I don't love any of them at this price point, but the NTG4 is probably the one I would have if you put a gun to my head, based on value. I don't really like the MKH 416 either. I find the 8060 hard to beat, its just superb- but it is nearly four times the price. I think its a classic case of getting what you pay for.

I did wonder whether you were!!
Awesome I love my NTG 4+ very clean 👌
Very good video, precise and informative. :)
Glad you liked it; cheers
Thanks for a superb job!
Great comparison, but you don't conclude with comparing it, sadly.
So NTG4 (+) or the Sennheiser ME66. Which would be your pick?
I'm a big fan of the Sennheiser because I've used it an awful lot and prefer the crisp sound. That said, if you use the Rode and switch in the high gain it sounds very decent too. So, I'll hedge my bets and say "either"!
Alright! Now I'll just go debating about it in my head :p
Awesome review!May I ask,NTG2 and NTG4+ has any other difference about musical quality?
ryan lee Thank you. Well the NTG4(+) is technically slightly quieter (ie less self-noise) but in terms of its capsule frequency response I couldn't actually say - best to check the Rode website as they show specific graphs for each model's capabilities.
TubeShooterMag Thank!
Thank you so helpful. So I am on a budget and I can't really go wrong with either of these right? I mean they should all fulfill my basic booming needs? I am learning in the field of filmmaking, what would you personally reccomend.
They're all decent mics. You might also like to look at the Aputure Deity which I recently reviewed as it's quite rugged, which can be helpful when filmmaking.
TubeShooterMag ok thanks. I will check that out
Diety sounds great, except, VERY noisy mic which renders it useless for me.
Call me crazy but I️ likes the sounds of the NTG2 better
I agree. We just used NTG2s on a movie with some rather well-known on-screen talent and crew shot in Hollywood, and the results were great.
You are not alone
I’ve heard the NTG4 and 2 in other tests. to my untrained ear I totally agree. I prefer it! I think the NTG4 sounds a little too radio studio which isn’t great for some of the dialogue I want or voice overs to mini docs where I want it to sound more natural
which better RODE NTG4 or Audio Technica AT897 ??
wonderful job you did here!
Thank you
So good test , thank you
exceeded my expectations~
Hey brother please please help me out that which one is better ntg4+ or ntg 2 pleadeto be honest man🙏🙏🙏
As with all mics, it's a matter of personal preference, budget and application. There's no one right or wrong answer.
@@TubeShooterMag i want to shoot on set bro so which one would you prefer ??
Hey man tell me up??
Like I said, it depends on your personal preference. Plus "a set" could be anything so I can't judge. Sorry, it's just not something I can say "this one" or "that one" for, it's not that simple.
I am pretty sure I wouldn't buy the NTG4+ because of the built-in battery. A microphone of this quality should outlast that battery. I've go a mic that is nearly 20 years old that still works great. I would probably go for the one with the AA removable battery. I can use phantom and self-powered with my various recorders. Nice audio test ... the NTG2 sounds better to me ...
Fair point but if I recall correctly the mic will power via standard phantom power as well so even when the battery's dead the mic still can be used.
Beat comparison, yes, the NTG4+ does seems better with r the high boost.... The ME66 generally sounds better to me.... Could you do a comparison with the Sanken CS1e and the CS3e?
capwkidd I wish I could but I don't own either of those mics and haven't got the spare cash to buy them, sorry.
Excuse my brain being dead but how did you achieve Phantom power on a nature reserve, you can tell I'm a stills photographer ?
I was shooting with a traditional semi-pro camcorder which has phantom-powered XLR mic sockets.
@@TubeShooterMag Ok, so where was the power for the Mic coming from, obviously not the battery from the video camera, or am I wrong?
Yes, the camcorder battery supplies power to the XLR inputs (and thence to the mic)
@@TubeShooterMag I assume that drains the battery a lot quicker then?
Not especially so, the power draw is minimal.
Why does it seem like the NTG4+ picked up so much more background noise outside than the NTG2?
NTG2 is better than NTG4. More present and consistant lows, and the same amount of noise, plus better rejection
I agree! NTG2 sounds best, then Sennheiser and last NTG4.
hello sir ,
I would like to take ntg-2 after seeing this vedio i am bit confused about ntg 4 + .
I am using boompole and fur covers ....
Which mic gives a greater sound ?
According to your opinion which is best in these ?
What are the main difference of ntg2 and 4+?
Will ntg2 give me almost same sound quality of ntg4+ ?
hope there will be reply
+ALWYN THOMAS SAJI They are both very good microphones. The NTG4 is the successor to the NTG1, the NTG4+ is the successor to the NTG2. The NTG4/4+ will sound slightly better but not enough to worry about if you can get a good deal on an NTG2.
+TubeShooterMag
Thanks a lot
I think you'll find the 4s are not "successors" to the 2s, just different.
Rode say the 4 "builds on the platform created by RØDE's award-winning NTG1 shotgun microphone" which sounds like a successor to me.
Great review
Thank you
Nicely done...thanks a lot.
+TubeShooterMag It is not an actual wind, It's more or less a humming sound in between dialogues. Especially indoor shoot...
+hillsTV Oh gosh yes, no wonder it was being a bit peculiar. Standard phantom power for pro mics is 48V. Do let me know if they issue's fully solved.
How long does it take to charge fully, from flat?
great video
i got a camcorder sony x70, what mic can i use in the mic holder that comes with it?
A short one, so that it doesn't stick out too far at the front and end up in the picture when you're zoomed wide. I don't know the dimensions of the mic holder, specifically how wide it is, but you probably want something like an Audio Technica ATR875R but check the diameter first to see it'll fit.
TubeShooterMag thanks for the advice.
do you thing audio technical will sound better than a sennheiser ??
Depends which one you get! I don't know if Sennheiser do a suitably short shotgun mic though.
TubeShooterMag i prefer a nice sound than a shorter mic ;-)
You won't if the mic you buy ends up showing in the top right corner of the screen when in its holder!
Excelent job !!! THANKS. as for my ears, well ...they all the same :)
What is the width of the female input of the stand that comes with the NTG4?
how come there is literally no ntg3 vs ntg4 tests?
+FLAMA Because the NTG4/4+ are updates to the NTG1 & 2 whereas the NTG3 is a completely different mic with a different order of sound etc. In other words, they're not really comparable because you wouldn't be looking to buy one of those mics as an alternative to the other.
awesome thanks :)
The pouch is in the bottom of the box lift up the cardboard holding the mic in
How well would the ME66 operate plugged directly into a camera with XLR?
***** I don't mean to be rude but I have no idea how you expect me to answer this! "How well?" is not a question that can realistically be quantified in absolute terms. It's a good mic so it works "very well", generally.
What I would say is that, as far as I understand your query, that's exactly what most people would do with it (I'm presuming that by "a camera with XLR" you mean a camcorder with XLR balanced audio inputs. I don't know of any *camera* that offers XLR inputs apart from perhaps the GH4 but even that's via an optional adapter box)
The quality of recording would be affected by the quality of the camera's pre-amps just as any mic or other sound source would.
You need the K6 powering module to go with your ME66 of course, they tend to come as a pair.
thank you
Great video
me66 killed it. What a great mic
what microphone were you using to record the start and end of the video?
+Andrew Bell Can't remember but probably the Rode NT-USB.
Sennheiser mke600 or rode ntg4+ ?? Thx..
Ntg2 sounds better than ntg4+ I when to b&h and this gentlemen said to me dont spend 400 dollars in a microphone that is not that good he will show the difference so we tested and the ntg2 sounds way better has more natural sound then ntg4+
good job
Thanks
Well done.
Seinnheiser or Rode NTG4+. Please reply!
+Empire Films It's up to you. Clearly I can't decide for you. It depends on your budget and what sound you like the best. Assuming by "Sennheiser" you mean the ME66/K6 then they're both good mics.
Which would you prefer?
I like the ME66 but maybe that's just because I've used it an awful lot. Otherwise, the NTG4 or 4+ with the treble boost turned on gives a nice crisp sound to my ears.
this is stereo mic?
Mono. Generally aimed at speech use, interviews, things like that.
Very helpfull, thanks.
the Sennheiser is undoubtfully betterin terms of clarity, S/N/ ratio and direciotnal pattern.
As expected, the Sennheiser wins at everything - except, surprisingly (for me), null rejection.
You're beautiful! Perfect review done right!
Thank you :-)
What external recorder did you plug the mics in to?
That was so long ago I can't remember. I suspect I used my Canon XF200 camcorder.
Thank's for the review, good tests
