I think it's like Grace said, it wasn't what it was advertised to be. Some people liked _Passengers_ but that wasn't what was advertised, and it made me really upset, sickened and angry!
That way the original knives out changed from murder mystery to a crime movie and then back into mystery was brilliant and why it was deeply loved by everybody. And the social commentary was the icing on a gorgeous looking cake. Glass onion is very good also
I thought all the trailers for this looked ‘medium’ good, so I’m SO glad that there is a sizeable portion of people saying it’s even better than the first 😭 I never would’ve expected that.
I couldn't be more excited about this movie. Knives Out was one of the all time greats! Probably won't be in the theater in my little town, but damn I hope so. Thanks Grace!
My one problem with Knives Out is that all its brilliance is swirling around one giant plot hole - the initial victim had no excuse not to realize that he wasn't showing any symptoms. That said, Glass Onion has been one of my most anticipated movies of the year, so I'm glad to hear you loved it.
i think he was clearly ready to die and wanted his death to be memorable like his books, when the opportunity presented itself he jumped at it. Also the reveal that chris evans was the killer really didnt do much for me, hope this one is more satisfying
Yeah he should've risked waiting for symptoms and put the life of the one person he cared about in jeopardy. Not everything you don't put effort in connecting the dots for is a plot hole lol
I saw it at a screening a couple weeks ago (Rian Johnson was there to introduce it and a brief Q&A after!!) and it was a great theater experience. Lots and lots of laughter. A terrific movie and so much fun.
Knives Out was so good both as a thriller and a social commentary, that I'm hugely excited about this one. And now with thumbs-up from Grace, the excitement is uncontrollable.
Most of the runtime the movie is more of a thriller where it is presumed Marta is the killer and rooting for her to get away with it. It doesn’t play out like a murder mystery till the very end.
In the overall cast you forgot to mention Madelyn Cline, who for younger audiences is a big draw to the film, any thoughts on her here in this film or does she not have a lot to do??
Saw it in the cinema last night and really glad I did. The music and the cinematography were just fabulous to see on the big screen. I definitely agree with you on Janelle Monae, she was great but I do feel like another actress could've done better. However, SPOILER!! I did wonder if we may see her again in a sequel, her and Benoit worked well together. I did wonder if they were trying to set her up as Benoit's Watson.
Ana de Armas is European. She is a white woman born in Cuba meaning she isn't a person of color. Her grandparents were immigrants from Spain so she has Spanish citizenship because she is of Spanish descent. Every European country gives citizenship based on descent. It's called the right of blood.
Having just finished watching "Glass Onion", I honestly have to say I liked the first film a lot better. It had better characters and an overall better plot. There wasn't a single person in GO that I actually cared anything about because the backstory was so thin and poorly developed. I admit the way things worked out, it was an interesting take on the standard whodunnit idea, but all things considered, I don't understand any raving reviews for this movie. The humor came in periodically and was only occasionally slightly amusing at best. As far as figuring out the who in this "whodunnit" that did it, it's very easy to determine. I was actually a little surprised that they gave it away so easily.
I figured out who did it almost immediately (minor vague spoiler: I saw them switch the thing) but this movie was more about the journey than the actual destination. It was so much fun!
I watched Glass Onion in the cinema just today and it was awesome. It started off pretty disappointing, I was scared it had become a classic Netflix comedy streaming movie, but oh boy did it excalate. It followed the same formula of the first one, which is so good, but was so different from it. I can't wait to see the next, hoping they keep doing what they're doing. Too bad that the Poirot adaptation franchise didn't do as well...when Murder on the Orient Express came out the same year as Knives Out I was happy there were going to be two big good mystery franchises. But after Death on the Nile flopped because of the pandemic, Armie's scandal and the Disney/Fox acquisition, I don't think they're even making a next one. I still want to watch Death on the Nile one day though, I still haven't.
Just finished watching Glass Onion. Wow. What a film. It’s such a good Murder Mystery film. So much better than the first film. AVOID ALL SPOILERS AND SEE IN A THEATRE. I want more Benoit Blanc 🤩
Its Frozen all over again with you. Hating the first film, loving the sequel. At least we can all be on the same page now about the franchise. Simply cannot wait for this film.
3:23 “every movie eventually goes to digital” I thought that Tilda Swinton movie “Memoria” was set to play in theaters forever and not come to digital streaming?
Just watched this on Netflix. It is better than the first and it's my favourite film of the year, with a fair bit to watch admittedly. I thought Craig, Hudson, Norton and Hahn were amazing but the stand out is Janelle Monae. This is the type of role and performance that should catapult her into superstar status, but unfortunately it probably won't. What a layered and effective performance. This is the best film Johnson has made and I'm a huge fan of his. First 5/5 film on letterboxd. I can't believe you don't think Monae was amazing, that's so surprising.
Lmao just skipped to the “blanca surprise lover” and was ironically not at all surprised 😂😂 I mean shocked that netflix would add that to a large franchise but but I saw the flag and immediately started (happily!) laughing out loud
Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig understand how to write stories that include modern elements while having fun with the audiences. I find that this movie's humor undercuts the emotional storyline (with Helen), which can make the ending more emotional and have a more significant impact. It is super fun and funny nonetheless. Maybe in the next movie, they can dial back the humor and bring back the emotional punch that the first one is more successfully displayed. I definitely feel that the first Knife out has a higher stake and has you at the edge of your seat. This one is a little too cartoonish to care about the murder and the people involved.
Oh how I wish I could see this in theaters!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been hearing so much good stuff about this movie. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the first "Knives Out" so to hear you say you love the sequel means I will especially love the sequel! Thanks for the review, Grace :)
based off the context clues, i think it’s safe to say madeline clines character is an influencer and has the chance to save whoever gets murdered but doesn’t. accessory to murder. idk 😭 i hope i’m as good as this as i think
Janelle Monaé was incredible! She was my favorite! Also Benoit Blanc was actually likable in this film. Glass Onion is a major step up from Knives Out which I thought was a train wreck. I really enjoyed Glass Onion! ❤🎉
I went to the cinema yesterday to watch this and I’m glad I did! It was such a great movie, very funny and such a great film. I can’t wait to rewatch once it comes out on netflix!!!
I like Knives Out, but didn’t think it was as amazing as some others think. I adored Glass Onion though. Amazing movie. It’s rare that a sequel/spin off tops the original, but this movie really did it.
Gonna wait till it comes home.🏘 Loved Rian Johnson's Brick and Knives Out, although I feel like with this one he's gonna be too clever by half. Y'know like, one turn of the director's wrench ... "Oh, that's brilliant!" ... and then he gives it another half turn ... "Oh, that's annoying now"
The only theater near me showing this movie is 45 minutes away. I love in the suburbs of Cleveland - you'd think it would be more wide spread. I'll just wait for Netflix.
Such a good movie! I wasn’t going to see it because the title confused me but once I found out it was a Knives Out film, I rushed to watch it and such a good payoff
Ok so I must strongly disagree with Grace here. Although I did not really enjoy Glass Onlon, me and my partner did find that Janelle Monae's performance was the best in the whole film! The rest of the cast was so over the top and just felt like caricatures but there were so many nuances to her performance!
Loved the first Knives Out and the second Glass Onion not so much. I don’t get what you liked so much about it? I didn’t really care or get invested in any of the characters in Glass Onion but Knives Out I really cared about the young actress who thinks she accidentally killled Christopher Plummers character.
I enjoyed the 1st Knives Out but not enough 2 defend it if someone said they didn't like it. I was always planning 2 watch Glass Onion but now I'm excited 2 check it out.
Blanc's boyfriend is NOT Matthew McConaughey :)
Damn thought I cracked it 😂😂😂
Nope it's a british romantic comedy leading man legend 😉🤫

lol. Thanks for clarifying. I came here just to comment that.
I’m not sure how anyone wouldn’t like the original Knives Out. Very funny, well acted and clever.

I like the Glass Onion as metaphor. An object that seems densely layered, but in reality, the center is in plain sight.
Janelle Monae is a standout in the film. I will not be surprised if she gets a best supporting actress nomination.
She won't because she wasn't all that special in this movie. She gave a much better performance in Hidden Figures.
