13 years old and her World senior debut and all I can say is Wow !! and I loved her choice of music from the movie soundtracks Speed and the Prince of Tides.
She had the best "face" in all of skating. The joy, ease, looking off in the distance with wonder. Part of what made her a joy to watch. Every skater can take a note from her on this. Great fluid arms as well.
Good grief this had 90s written all over it and I LOVED it! From the soundtrack score music of SPEED to the lovely big bangs and the puffy babydoll dress sleeves that were really in style around that time 🥰
As a HUGE Kwan fan, I have tremendous respect for Tara's talent. Tara recently gave an interview and she said that she was always grateful she got to compete against "one of the greatest skaters of all time," and it was something she never took lightly. She was talking about Michelle Kwan. And on her ice network commentary, she mentioned that she knew she needed to up her technical levels b/c "I knew how great Michelle was." So Tara does not strike me as nasty at all.
Tanja Szewczenko of Germany had a gorgeous program using the soundtrack to Speed, and she successfully interpreted it as well as the content. It was during her comeback in 97 after injury and her illness, and was basically one of the top skaters that season.
I think I like this program better than her "Rainbow" performance at the 98" Olympics. Which says alot! Awesome performance - I like her speed with conviction and her confident beautiful moves!
She was like a deer in the headlights in the short porgram, consideirng her age and inexperience was understandable. It was about experience, and she showed a lot of character by rebounding here. Not a big jumper but she rotated so quickly she could still complete the rotation and she was always fun to watch.
IMO Tara's best overall performance. The music choice really pairs well with Tara's speed and youthful exuberance and adds a layer of competitive intensity rather than just coming off as "cute and fun" (which I think worked against her scoring in '95 Nationals)
Back in the day, I couldn't stand her because she was a threat to Kwan and I was a hardcore Team Kwan fan. Now I can appreciate the speed, flow and ease with which she did some of the hardest moves.

So what exactly were the age requirements for singles ladies back in this period? Currently don't we have age restrictions, set by the ISU, to compete at the senior level? (i wanna say you must be 15 or turning 15 by a certain date that year but I have no idea if this is accurate, if I'm conflating different sports or if an age requirement only applies to the olympics or is set by each country's Ice skating federation, etc.). I only ask cause 13 seems so incredibly young to be skating a the seniors level. It just seems odd to have someone who's really still a kid, no matter how great their skating (and Tara's is excellent obviously) competing against someone in their mid to late 20's.

I totally forgot she competed at the senior worlds at 13. I see why they have a age requirement now. It looks very strange for a little girl to be competing against women. In my opinion that's the only reason why she did so well because she was a child with such a tiny frame. I don't think she would have been dominate if she continued skating especially once she hit puberty and had the dreaded growth spurt. She was smart to retire.
She ended up quitting skating all together by 19/20 because of hip problems/injuries she encountered over the years from too many repetitions of 3-3 combos with the 3Lo as the 2nd jump.
She hit puberty and a growth spurt before the Olympics and she did just fine. She won, not only because she was technically superior, but because she skated with such joy. No ultra-dramatic angst - just joy.

As Sumner said, everybody in the arena knew who had won after Tara skated before the scores went up. After Ito and Yamaguchi retired the two ladies who pushed the envelope won Olympic Gold. 1994 was the worst year for women ever. Baiul barely did a combination. But Lipinski and Hughes won because they took it. No gifts. Kwan (and Slutskaya ugh) and her family thought the judges were Santa.

A One Foot Axel. Normally you will land on the foot you take off/enter with, but with the one foot Axel, you land on the foot opposite the one used for the take off/entry.
