  • I am embarking on a process of reading and learning some lute tunes from the Scottish seventeenth century manuscripts. I will play these on guitar using lute tuning and (in theory) lute technique too. This recording, by way of a prelude to that, is an untitled Scottish piece from the Jane Pickering manuscript, transcribed by Rob MacKillop and named by him for his daughter. He says we can call it what we choose, but in honour of Rhona, and of Rob's great contribution to this music, I am more than happy to stick with his title.
As well as retuning the guitar, I have chopped off my right-hand nails. Even a casual glance at my right hand reveals that I really haven't yet grasped lute technique at all (while also somewhat messing up my guitar technique). I do like the warmth of the non-nails approach, however.

Lovely, Richard…I agree, a nice warmth without the nails 👏

Thank you, John. The problem is that I am not getting the lower hand position that I need to pluck upwards. (Also, can't break the habit of using the ring finger, which you are not supposed to do on the lute.)

Not the perfect lute technique... maybe... It sounds great on your guitar!

Thank you, Frithjof - well, it definitely isn't, but I am happy with the sound I get without nails (and regret all those years spent guarding my long right-hand nails against damage).
