"Peace of mind isn't achieved without a full heart. To take the world in without its troubles is to repair the vitality we often forget to care for.
Be at one with silence and let nature sway before your eyes. You will find a grasp on reality long abandoned, and a place where the heart and mind rest together beyond the stage of death.
A place where even a soul can be felt..."

It is so sad, that we as a society have lost our sense of wonder. When I was a child, the smallest things were inherently beautiful. The littlest thing would grab my interest and hold it. Beauty was everywhere. Now I have grown cold and jaded. This video helps me to remember. I need to remember.

I love that about childhood. I remember being fascinated to see new colours when doing painting at school. One of my favourite pics is my son, still a toddler, crawling and looking at a piglet on our cousin's farm. I have a similar one of my grandson looking at a snail.

I love magic...or “illusion” and when I laugh or am amazed at a card trick I feel it keeps me young. I am 41, getting married soon, am quite mature, but still have this child-like wonder and love for the world.

I think alot of people who appreciate this video have gone through something very tough, and afterwards looked at their life, the world, in a deeper point of view. I know, because i'm one of them. If i'd seen this scene 10 years ago i wouldn't had understood it. Today, i do, and i love it, and i understand it in my own way.
It means so much to me.

This music reminds me of these beautiful fall evenings when I would sit with my late father. We would be outside on the porch as the leaves fell, sometimes we would run out of words and just sit there and live the moment. I think of him fondly and I miss him, and all our moments. These moments have left lasting impression on my mind, and some days I have to remember that he's been gone nearly 2 years, still feels like I found out yesterday. I still feel he's waiting for me there, on that porch as the leaves fall around him, as he says "Hey B why don't you join me". He was and is my greatest memory and best friend. My father Richard E. "It's interesting how certain scenes can resonate so deeply with us! The plastic bag scene in American Beauty is often seen as a beautiful metaphor for finding beauty in the mundane and the struggles of life. It evokes a sense of longing and the fleeting nature of happiness, which can definitely bring out strong emotions. It's amazing how art can connect with our feelings and experiences in such powerful ways."

Like a little kid begging me to play with it. For fifteen minutes. That's the day I realized that there was this entire life behind things, and this incredibly benevolent force that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid, ever. Video's a poor excuse, I know. But it helps me remember... I need to remember... Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world, I feel like I can't take it, and my heart is just going to cave in."

When I first saw this movie I was crying on that scene, seriously, I was so deeply touched, It was like awaking from a dream. We grow up and we get blind, we are unable to see the real beauty of the world, of the smallest things, but this realisation can help us a lot. That's why I think that movie is very important and everyone, who is bored with life should see it.

This video speaks to those of us who appreciate the small things. A smile from a stranger, a warm coffee on a winter's day, the sense of wonder as a child discovers something new, the look on a loved one's face as you encourage them to speak more about their passion. The playful motion of a plastic bag. This speaks to the people who are content with the moment, because it is about what we make of it. We can be completely satisfied with what we have, who and where we are. Because we are at one with the universe. A universe that is radiating warmth, hope and togetherness. A universe that believes in us, and us it. I watch this video because I need to remember.

This scene is so beautiful, as the character says the bag is just to help you to remember the beauty of the world and something just as simple as a bag has the meaning of an entire universe and you fill yourself by just looking at it because it's beautiful, it's so beautiful that you can't comprehend it, it's just there.

Amazing that a simple piece of found video and a minimalistic piece of music can capture a since of Melancholy and a deep appreciation of how blessed we are that we are alive and conscious inspite of all that goes on in the world that can rob us of Serenity.
This is why Newman is my very favorite film composer. He does it almost every single time. That's an amazing and awe inspiring track record of Artistry. Extra kudos go to Sam Menes for this extremely beautiful movie that truly captures the sadness that we experience in the "Hissing of Summer Lawns" (as Joni Mitchell also captured).

Sometimes on autumn afternoons I sit under a huge tree outside my unit. I watch the red, amber, golden and brown leaves drift with the wind into the air. They dance like fireflies, twisting and turning. I don't care for thought much at this time, I just sit. Perhaps mesmerised by the effortless beauty. Perhaps I just hope that this exact moment will last a lifetime.

This is my favourite piece of music and footage , for the past few days I've been angry and depressed . I've felt like the plastic bag, being buffeted around without any control , helpless to the wind and circumstance.
After many hours of watching and reflecting , I've come to realise I'm not the bag , I'm the wind . That's what I choose to be ! free to go and move wherever I want . Choice is a beautiful , it makes us appreciate what we have .

I was always moved by this gracefully poignant moment from American Beauty. It never left my mind. I just thought of it again while studying Masterclass with Hans Zimmer. Newman's music in this movie stuck with me forever. Thank you Thomas Newman for the ability to create such a moment for me and millions of others that felt that same feeling during the now famous 'plastic bag' scene. Unforgettable.

i love how everyone interprets this in their own way
for me, this symbolises being stuck and unable to be truly free. just when the plastic bag goes high enough and you think it's going to fly away, it comes back down to the same place. it's unable to escape this single area, and keeps floating around, in different angles, trying to get out. but eventually in the end, it falls back in the same place.

Sometimes we get so caught up in our lives only focusing on bigger problems, but if you can just take a minute to step outside and see the sky, clouds, trees, grass, flowers or even buildings... they have so much beauty in it, you just have to take a moment and not think about anything and see it.

The beauty of 'art' is that it's open to interpretation. I love the simplicity of this scene, but I can understand why people wouldn't see the big deal or would think it's pretentious. When I first watched it a year ago I didn't get much from it, but after the suicide of one of my best friends less than a month ago I decided to watch it again and got a whole new meaning from it. Some people said they feel like the bag is dancing and is free but I don't get that. I feel like if it was a person it'd be someone who's just experienced the loss of a loved one and is in the whirlwind of grief: being thrashed around because its lost control. It feels empty and helpless and deflated. And trapped in its own isolation. I don't feel happy or liberated when I watch it. But that's just me. My take on it could be influenced by what I'm going through in life right now.

The simplicity of the bag floating is the main idea behind it, with so much going on in this world we are losing time everyday to stop n stare at the trivial and beautiful things happening all around us. I suppose the director is trying to capture such short living beauty hiding in the moment that we rarely take time to consider or appreciate......

It's not necessary that you'll see beauty in this particular picture. It's your own understanding of beauty. And we all need to learn to experience pleasure and joy in little things in our life.
I have one thing in my mind that might help you to "see beauty" again like the first time in your life. How long have it been since you looked at sky? Not just glanced but really was looking and staring at sky. I found myself one day staring at sky and smiling because it was so beautiful and peaceful. I was standing like for a minute and looking at moving clouds. And I felt so little but a part of something big. It gave me the energy and motivation to keep going literally and figuratively.
    (Sorry for my english).

I was captivated by its simplicity and depth, its artfulness. But now, after 5 years, I accidentally came across this video again. Now I am watching it, but I feel nothing at all. It is just a bag floating around; there’s nothing more to it. I wonder what has happened to me, where did I lose that sense of wonder? It feels like once there was an open door stretching to a world full of miracles, marvels, surprises, and oddities. Now it has been closed, probably forever. Maybe that is the reason I feel so empty inside, working 9-5, six days a week, with my biggest goal being able to have a comfortable home and a normal daily life. Oh, how I miss my old carefree self

The beauty of this scene is that all of us Can find beauty in it, but different beauties. It's not about understanding it, it's about feeling it, feeling it in your personal way. That's life, we can even find beauty in a bag if we want, and it's beautiful. It's beautiful because if we find beauty in this we've listened to our inner voice, to our soul. Society can tell us what it Wants, that you have to be successful to be someone and to be happy, to be like Buddy Kane (was he really happy ?). But wait a second and look at Lester, he was a loser, (sure ?) but when he died he was smiling. He was smiling because he listened to his inner voice and to his soul, and He found Beauty. This is amazing and I hope that all the people who've watched The movie could find their beauty, I'll look for it too.

The point of this scene is to see the underlying beauty in life (hence the title of the movie) and not the superficial lie that we are told by society is "beauty" (like the pretty blond cheerleader in the movie who felt her only worth was how she was seen sexually) and to get to see this clip, I had to watch a commercial featuring the Superbowl and beer.

It represents the inner struggle one has when all the obstacles we face seem to be a brick wall and we try and try and try and we fail... then we have a realization that the path we were pursuing wasn't meant for us then we move on and flow through the air with ease as if we were a plastic bag on a windy day going every which way trying to find our path, not realizing that our environment will never allow us to stay on a steady path no matter how determined we are...

to search for a deep rational meaning is to miss the point, for chaos cannot be tamed by order....
to become the bag, you must first let go of all purpose or intent....
move with nature instead of against it...
embrace surrender and acceptance, give up the desire to dominate and control...
only when you allow yourself to be one with the universe, can you find the ability to move freely and forcefully, liberated from all shackles and constraint...
only then does doing require little effort and produce the most dramatic results...
only then you find that what once drained your energy with resistance is become your source of inexhaustible power...

One of the most impressive films I've ever seen in my life. The theme song captures you and freezes you right in the moment. It makes you think of your life, your past, your present and your future all at the same time. It's so hauntingly nostalgic and the older you get it impacts you much more with every passing decade. When you're young you chase the future and when you are old you chase the past. Life is beautiful and we should cherish any moment.
For me, this is a musical masterpiece because it allows me to by just hearing a combined group of instruments, playing the right keys, to go deeper into my mind and fade away in to a "lucid dream".
PS. I could never replicate this with AI, neither the heart I've just put in to this comment.

Bry92 I say... when you capable of creating something like this, should you really care about awards and what other people think of your work?

Antonio Giacca - True. The fact that he was nominated 12 times is recognition enough.

I remember seeing this for the first time at the theatre. I was mesmerized. I did not want it to end. It envoked deep feelings inside me that came to the surface about my chlldhood and my present state of mind. The people who I was with asked me what was wrong and i said nothing. Nothing is wrong. I am just overwhelmed at that scene with the plastic bag. They all laughed.

I feel at peace when I hear this nostalgic music. I've been through a lot in my life so far and I pray that every human being is is at peace!
