Electric powered glider at Inch Beach, Ireland.

- Опубліковано 5 жов 2015
- Glider pilots come to Inch annually around the end of September to take advantage of the fine beach for takeoff and landing and the prevailing winds. Traditional gliders are towed in order to take off takeoff but this one can take off on its own.
feeling like
light as fast as the bird in the sky
this is a great invention that this glider
with coloured wings to fly very higt
congratulations
That is a great looking glider.
Wow, that is amazing, truly amazing. Years ago I learnt to fly in an ASK13 and to see what technology is available now is mind blowing.
Tim Purvis but still better to "learn" to fly in a old timer than this. I learn to fly in ASK-21.
Perfect day for a glider......you can ride the thermals without being bothered by that pesky sunshine...
Awesome no need for tow on take off I want one and I will get one.
Did you ever get one?
When it runs out of battery... it's still a glider.
Yes, but if you still have some juice left in the packs you can throttle up when in the glide and descending if you need some extra energy to make it safely to your landing strip.
15seconds at full power then 12mins max power?
Heck yea.
Equip that wings with solar panels and it can now fly indefinitely - in a sunny morning that is.
You've got firm grasp for the obvious.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for sharing!🤓
fantastic well done
that was cool. I bet there was a huge drag coefficient curve here for that sand runway!!
"Rolling resistance"!
great video buddy
Good video, thank you.
"pulse & glide" at a whole new level
Gliders that can now take off on their own. Their basically ultralight airplane now with intermittent thrust from a folding propeller.
I love it how the full size gliding world is copying the scale RC gliders with electric ROG motors. Not only that but also having to put up with members of the public in open spaces as well!
Simply great! How much altitude can it gain?
Omg - awsome - i want one !
1000 subs is behind you baby
wow love it ,barry ppl.
Be still, my heart! I'm in love!!! This glider is both pretty and capable. I SO want one. Now all I have to do is figure out where and how I can get my hands on $20K. lol I can dream.
20k? Is that all ? Are you sure?
I think this glider starts at about $120k
Lipo LIHV ?
I want one of those.
Really neat set up I cant believe its only a 2kw motor I'd say its a tad under powered I fly large RC gliders up to 4M wingspan and I use brushless motors rated at around 0.7kw mind you the climb rates incredible they easily go vertical.
He meant to say 2kwh :-) he was talking about the battery capacity not the motor..
Nice.... what make and model? "Silent 2 Electric"
nice bro😄😃
what brushless motor is used in this glider?
20kW continuous, 22kW max output
my right ear enjoyed this video
He's still up there, somewhere...
so, how is he balancing there at the beginning???

Good, how many altitude you must stop the electric engine and start for gliding in the air ?
Could a glide take u from the USA to Jamaica islands🤔 not a electric glider of course
Qual país é fabricado,8?..... Qual país e este...
Just make sure your home before the next high tide.
How much power this engine have?
Do you carry ballast weight?
what is the power of the engine?
What would its autonomy be? Maybe 10 minutes?
The record for an un-powered sailplane is over 1000 miles.
What is its price?
2kw batteries are more than enough. Once you take off batteries work finish. Landing don't need power.
Most pilots will calculate this in, and when you're going cross country it;s not that uncommon for a glider pilot to land in a farmer fields or other nearby landing strips
Aerodynamics
how much this plane cost in us dollars including shipping to mexico
If you have to ask, you probably can't afford it.
I don't suppose you recorded the landing at inch, pitty the video was short. I live in Ireland and know inch very well. What kind of licence and training is needed to get to that stage? Cheers
Two kilowatts hour, the hour there is very important when we are talking energy, Dan.
He is taking off towards a cloud covered peak. Kaboom!
what is range in km of acumulator (electric storage )
it's just for taking off
“If I had to ask, I can’t afford it” 😭😭😭😭😭😭💸
You can afford it if you want it enough
Can you just pull it with car to assist the take off?
Yes
That's a great economical advantage, time, towing/equipment/gas and exhaust pollution. But is it popularly affordable?
Show me affordable new glider.... :D No... its going to be something between 100-200k
Cool dude....👌🏻
Whats the price ?
Too much
How much his price
how far the glidder flying ?
a lot
solar panels on wings?
@@HangTimeDeluxe questions are the heart of understanding....methinks age has addled yer brain
Can you run it in reverse after you touch down as reverse thrust?
No need as gliders have air brakes deployed after touchdown.
That beach looks a bit longer than an inch lol
Does any one have any idea of how much does it cost? At least rough numbers - 10 000 euro, 50 000 euro, 100 000 euro?
K Al Ni more than a luxury saloon up to 150k tho
The new glider costs about € 70.000, without motor.
The good thing (for most of us) is that you don't actually need to own one to fly one. Join a club and you can fly club gliders with reasonable costs.
Don't know of any club that has one of these beauties though ;)
Whchimean is power up
How the hack it stays in equilibrium on that single middle wheel ?!?
Alexandru Nistoroiu by chance... ;-)
While stationary, someone has to hold the wing tip off the ground (3:01). Once the aircraft starts moving forward, there's just enough airspeed for the control surfaces on the wing (flaperons) to create enough lift that the pilot can maintain them level throughout the takeoff phase. Pause the video at 3:08 to see the flaperons moving up on the left wing and moving down on the right wing at the same time.
@@_John_P interesting, thank you
I wonder how many towed liftoffs you'd have to forego to equal the cost of this 12 minute motor.
That's the longest takeoff roll I've ever seen.
I guess you've seen few.
Tinchote
Maybe not enough. But I've always been impressed with the short take off roll. This one struck me as long, by a lot.
I cannot tell on my own, of course, but maybe you have mostly seen light trainers. In any case, the length depends on the power of the engine, be it on the tow plane or the glider. I've seen some sketchy tow planes and very long ground runs, especially with ballasted open class gliders.
Tinchote
I've seen marginal tow planes, but a glider achieves ground effect at quite low speeds.
This has a motor. Ground effect appeared to be late. Maybe the motor/battery is heavier than I thought.
How about the sand factor........
does anybody know how much an electric glider like this costs?
You are looking at 50-70,000$ (usd) That's a large number, but you can probably find a club around and they might have one. As a first glider we would not reccommend getting a motor glider. It is less hassle and more common to find a average sailplane for cheaper and it is very cheap to get towed or launched into the air
How much
do you need a different licence to pilot a glider with or without engine?
Depends. In the UK, self sustainers can be flown with a regular glider license. If they can take off, then you need a NPPL or a PPL. I might be wrong though.
@@StefanoBorini In the USA, if you have your glider license, all you need to fly a powered or motor-glider is an instructor endorsement and sign off for your log book. Some motor gliders can fly extended ranges under power, and one advantage in the USA is that there is no recurring medical required to fly a motor-glider, unlike normal powered general aviation aircraft life a piston Cessna
Pedro... sadly, not me.

How long does the battery last for?
they said 12 minutes. I guess that’s plenty for 3 or 4 launches. The sky did not look ready for much soaring thermal activity yet.
Hi Dan, the one who flies it is you
Sadly, not me.
what is the difference between a motor glider and a plane?
An TMG is an Touring motor glider, an sailplane with self takeoff has an engine only to take off or gain altitude when you have no thermals, an substainer only has an engine to prevent an outlanding, and an pure glider has no engine
I bet the power system is sub 60 pounds.
Electric gliders are a great proposition because many high performance gliders already carry ballast inside to increase the descent speed and wing loading. Replace the ballast with batteries and you have the same aircraft but with substantially more energy to go around
Most ballast is actually water ballast which is jettisoned prior to landing. Some gliders have the capacity to take on fixed extra weight but normally this is to compensate for smaller pilots.
@@newforestroadwarrior Still his point is correct. The existence of ballasts show that designing a glider is not a constant fight against weight, contrary to what intuition tells us. So a couple of tens of kg more is mangeable.
@@haltux Sorry but you don't understand what ballast is for.
how long the batteries are operational
Asw 28?
It’s so cute though...but not self launching if you need someone to tend your wingtips
Wait is an FES allowed to take off?? I am pretty sure it's not
Aye, but this is Ireland. As long as you're not a moron, it's all good.
Not affordable! We'll be towing for another 30+ years. With the massively large heat thermals that are developing a glider might take-off at an Irish beach and eventually be recovered somewhere near Montreal.
An self-launching electric glider is already cheaper than a traditionnal glider if you consider the cost of launches during its full lifetime. By far.
That would be fantastic for touring. What is the glide ratio on it?
It's around 41:1 but for touring- the batteries don't last very long!
Flight Timestamp is at 3:02
neatly squared away in the nose. you could make it 10 blades to smooth the sound. And because electric can be so compact I might place the motor on the tail instead, to get the sound away from the flying experience.
The sound is only for a few minutes during launch, for the most part

What is the price of that glider?
Frank R. Pilot ... Google Silent 2 electric powered glider.
Couldn't find a price, but I'd say that well north of 30k
75000 euros new. Electro have kits that you can build approx 500 hours. The batteries have to be monitored carefully.
Дас ис гут!
I always thought that the whole idea of a glider. was that it didn't have any power source, hence the name. It is now a powered aircraft.
Well - you need some kind of power to get airborne - either a tow plane or a winch (or in special cases bungee ropes). This makes the plane more independent. The battery capacity is only 12 minutes here - so in effect for any extended flights this is still a glider. An added benefit for self launching is that if forced/decided to land out, the motor gives you more options to select the most safe landing place.
@@daviddou1408 Wow sounds cool. Never heard about that - but not much different to bungee to downhill - so why not.
Any case thanks for the info.
No solar panels.. Strictly battery.
solar panels in this case are not efficients, pls eXcuse my eng
*SILENT* ?????????
Thing hardly climbs, the take off performance seems dangerous.
any standard runway is long enough
@@hettingr Yeh, standard international airport runway.
Paramotor would be my choice
compare a glide ratio of paramotor at about 4-6 to one while the high-performance sailplane is upwards of 60+ to one.
@@carrollhanks1055 shorter takeoff, smaller storage space, no help needed on takeoff, ...

where
at this point it isnt even a glider even more
It’d still say so. It only has power for about 30 min max. It’s not really meant for powered flight. Doesn’t even have a real engine but rather an electric motor. Once you get to cruise altitude, you cut the power. It’s great so you don’t need it to be towed. That motor comes in handy in case of an emergency if happen to get low and need that bit of extra power
why did you call car driver an Idiot exactly ?
If it can take off under it's own power, how is it still a "glider" ?
Motoglider if you want ,)
It's a glider, the same way that sailboats have an engine and still are sailboats.
Well put Tinchote I will use that when people say "Why is it called a powered paraGLIDER?" "It's a glider, the same way that sailboats can have an engine and still are sailboats."
Because it functions and performs as a glider once the engine is cut off.
