Some of the best days of my summer youth was when I was a young US Army PFC soldier stationed in Hanau Germany. On Weekends I would thake th train to Mintz and catch a ride to Finther to join my new frineds in a German Glider Club. Each flight cost $1.25 US or 4.5 German Marks I met a 17 year old boy in thte glider club named Wolfgang Ermish there, sure wish I could find him again.........

Good idea! Electric makes the most sense in gliders. You only need power occasionally and the motors are lightweight, which is a big plus in a glider. The only hitch is the weight of batteries, and that is improving rapidly. Let's hope someone will markets kit versions without that astronomical quarter-of-a-million-dollar price tag. Elsewhere, electric for propulsion is a silly fad, particularly given that, thanks to fracking, we are a generation or more from reaching "Peak Oil."

That shows you the difference between a aircraft designed to save costs and one designed to be cutting edge technology. If the Duster had ever been factory built and there had been a market for at least 100 a year the cost of a finished factory built one at that time could have been about 5,000.00 dollar since a factory can cut the materials cost even more then a kit producer can. But at that time there was no market (buyers) for 100 factory built Duster a year . I think the Duster could be converted into a all aluminum design by someone that knows how to design in aluminum. The Media needs to get this correct Sail Planes or Glider's are NOT repeat NOT powered by the wind as inferenced but they are Solar powered, the Sun heats the terrain creating thermal up drafts, remember the Aircraft is flying downhill all the time BUT if the Air it is flying in is ascending faster than the craft is descending then a rise in altitude is the result. I have my home in Alabama, USA and been a glider pilot since minimum solo age in USA. I have always been aware that sailplanes are very expensive. I also know they are not produced for the masses. That means there cost can be brought down considerably though manufacturing economies if there is a market and a desire to produce for that market at the cost that is possible. So come on bring your glider factory to Alabama USA and produce real bargains in sailplanes for the world made in Alabama, USA. Love to see a electric powered tractor propeller drive that looks like a ASW19 but cost 10K to buy. And a 2 seater like a ASK21 for 25K for not only the market of the USA but the world . Do it here instead of China.
I think they actually do good. 250.000/25 are 10.000 per employee per month. In addition, they are also selling the engines "without" a plane, so just the propeller for example. Also they are a maintenance organisation and have a good reputation, at least in Germany.
Well, as bad as Germany has become regarding politics and laws, some of our german-made products still make me proud to live in a country that pays so much attention to quality, apart from a few companies like Volkswagen or Umarex, to name just 2.
Who doesn't? But even if you don't have a quarter of a million euros you can go fly using hardly any fuel. With the right weather and a bit of practice you can fly for hours with just a couple of minutes begind a towplane or a tiny bit of fuel for a winch (some even have electric motors). Go find a glider club near you and give it a try! (Disregard if you do already, obviously)
Wouldnt gasoline be better? You could go up with the motor. And when you're on top, you dont need to carry the weight of the fuel anymore. With batteries, you'll still carry them if they're empty
weight is a good thing for better glide. think like this: you throw a cotton ball in to the wind; you throw a baseball in to the wind. think about the result. Ballast is a common thing in gliders. Built in with the batteries plus it provides the self launch. no brainer.

this glider is one of the most advanced and expensive gliders in the world. You can buy different gliders that cost less or buy a used. But the most inexpenive way to fly gliders is to go to a flight club
+Chuck Croston Speak for yourself, do some fact checking. Mountain waves and ridge lift are absolutely riding the wind. The wind is going up faster than the sailplane is coming down, if that's not riding I don't know what is.
And what happens if there is no mountain or ridge there. What is the wind going to do for you than? 3 types of lift, thermal, wave or mountain/ridge. Wind is a component of the last 2 but you are not riding the wind itself. The lift is produced by the wind being deflected up the ridge or mountain. And that is also why you never fly on the opposite side of the mountain from the direction of the wind as it then has turned into sink and you sure are not riding sink.
BTW, wave lift is different than mountain or ridge lift. Wave soaring is a completely different type of soaring than ridge lift flying is. Look up a guy named Balleka on hefe, he has plenty of videos of him riding ridge lift produced by wind. But with out the ridge he would not be staying up where be is flying.

I know that mountain wave lift and ridge lift is definitely riding the wind. Call it what you want, but I know what it is. A sailplane is riding in an ocean of air and if the ocean of air is going up faster than the sailplane is descending you go up. You are riding wind. If you airspeed is 100 knots and you are going into a 120knot wind you are going backwards over the ground at 20knots, again you are riding the wind. A thermal is the same, it's air that's rising faster than the sailplane is descending you are riding the wind. I agree sailplanes are not powered by the wind, they are powered by gravity, but they absolutely are riding the wind.

If you have a head on wind of 40 knots and you are sitting in the Blanik on the ground; what happens?
it's fun to have an electric powered glider. there is nothing wrong with the electric motor. the big project is the battery?. (1) weight, (2) leveling time, (3) range, (4) endurance, and (5) durability. as you can see, there are big problems (1) the weight of the battery must be reduced a lot. (2) recharging the battery must be as fast as tanks and faster. (3) the range must be increased much much much more in terms of time and miles. (4) endurance the world's toughest marathon. (5) durable you should detonate a 2 ton bomb without it breaking. today's batteries are reasonably good but can be even better than best.
yes they can, I came to see this electric drive because the gas ones sometimes don't start and then you basically have a giant spoiler deployed. There has been a few pilots who deploy to low and then end up dying when the motor doesn't start. I'd rather have my exit strategy planned rather than relying on tech to save my butt.

There’s also mountain waves that have brought gliders up past 50k feet with no motor power! Gliding is an incredible way to fly.
A quarter-million euros is overpriced, I guess the creators pay themselves huge salaries. There is a two-seater motorized sail plane for only 150k usd.

Yes, Kelev, altitude is potential energy for the glider...it must be towed or otherwise powered to get to altitude. THEN, its 'power' is gravity. Research 'glide ratio'...........

How the propeller stops in the right position for retrac?

How are the batteries changed out? Are they on a tray or slide into the wing somehow?
The batteries are likely in tracks in the wing rather than use water ballast and can be externally charged too.

Who doesn't? But even if you don't have a quarter of a million euros you can go fly using hardly any fuel. With the right weather and a bit of practice you can fly for hours with just a couple of minutes begind a towplane or a tiny bit of fuel for a winch (some even have electric motors). Go find a glider club near you and give it a try! (Disregard if you do already, obviously)

You could go up with the motor. And when you're on top, you dont need to carry the weight of the fuel anymore. With batteries, you'll still carry them if they're empty

weight is a good thing for better glide. think like this: you throw a cotton ball in to the wind; you throw a baseball in to the wind. think about the result. Ballast is a common thing in gliders. Built in with the batteries plus it provides the self launch. no brainer.
I'd imagine it's performance would be even more amazing without the weight of that prop, motor and batteries. That has to be a serious weight penalty.

this glider is one of the most advanced and expensive gliders in the world. You can buy different gliders that cost less or buy a used. But the most inexpenive way to fly gliders is to go to a flight club

Mountain waves and ridge lift are absolutely riding the wind.
The wind is going up faster than the sailplane is coming down, if that's not riding I don't know what is.
And what happens if there is no mountain or ridge there. What is the wind going to do for you than? 3 types of lift, thermal, wave or mountain/ridge. Wind is a component of the last 2 but you are not riding the wind itself. The lift is produced by the wind being deflected up the ridge or mountain. And that is also why you never fly on the opposite side of the mountain from the direction of the wind as it then has turned into sink and you sure are not riding sink.
BTW, wave lift is different than mountain or ridge lift. Wave soaring is a completely different type of soaring than ridge lift flying is. Look up a guy named Balleka on hefe, he has plenty of videos of him riding ridge lift produced by wind. But with out the ridge he would not be staying up where be is flying.

I don't have to look up anyone Chuck I started flying sailplanes in 1980. Mountain wave lift is not different than wave lift, it's referred to as mountain wave lift. It's caused by the mountains.

I know Balleka's videos, I know Bruno's videos and I know sailplanes. I know what ridge lift is, I know what wave lift is, also know as mountain wave lift. I know what thermals are. I've know all of that stuff for 35 years.
I know that mountain wave lift and ridge lift is definitely riding the wind. Call it what you want, but I know what it is. A sailplane is riding in an ocean of air and if the ocean of air is going up faster than the sailplane is descending you go up. You are riding wind. If you airspeed is 100 knots and you are going into a 120knot wind you are going backwards over the ground at 20knots, again you are riding the wind. A thermal is the same, it's air that's rising faster than the sailplane is descending you are riding the wind. I agree sailplanes are not powered by the wind, they are powered by gravity, but they absolutely are riding the wind.
+Bruce So the deflection of the air up the mountain or ridge is providing the lift used to stay aloft. It is the updraft of the air caused by the mountain, ridge whatever. It is not the wind itself. And I do believe we are talking semantics here. I fly in S Fl so all we ever fly is thermal except for some stories of guys who got wave lift from lenticular clouds back in the 70's. To use your example of flying backwards which I have done myself in a 1-26. A Super blanik L23 lifts off at about 35 knots more or less. If you have a head on wind of 40 knots and you are sitting in the Blanik on the ground; what happens?

it's fun to have an electric powered glider. there is nothing wrong with the electric motor. the big project is the battery?. (1) weight, (2) leveling time, (3) range, (4) endurance, and (5) durability. as you can see, there are big problems (1) the weight of the battery must be reduced a lot. (2) recharging the battery must be as fast as tanks and faster. (3) the range must be increased much much much more in terms of time and miles. (4) endurance the world's toughest marathon. (5) durable you should detonate a 2 ton bomb without it breaking. today's batteries are reasonably good but can be even better than best.

yes they can, I came to see this electric drive because the gas ones sometimes don't start and then you basically have a giant spoiler deployed. There has been a few pilots who deploy to low and then end up dying when the motor doesn't start. I'd rather have my exit strategy planned rather than relying on tech to save my butt.

Tom Kelsall nope, there’s these columns of rising air called thermals that can keep gliders in the air for hours. When you fly on airplanes and hit turbulence, you are flying through thermals. There’s also mountain waves that have brought gliders up past 50k feet with no motor power! Gliding is an incredible way to fly.

Yes, Kelev, altitude is potential energy for the glider...it must be towed or otherwise powered to get to altitude. THEN, its 'power' is gravity. Research 'glide ratio'...........
