Indigenous 100 - Sir Hirini Moko Mead - Episode 46

There are certain individuals who require no introduction, and Sir Hirini Moko Mead is undoubtedly one of them. He is widely recognized as one of the most distinguished Māori leaders in Aotearoa, owing to his exceptional proficiency in te reo Māori and te ao Māori. In 2007, Sir Hirini was honoured with the title of Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his contributions to Māori culture and education.
Initially, Sir Hirini trained as a teacher and artist. He taught in various schools in the East Coast and Bay of Plenty regions and later served as the principal of several schools. After obtaining his PhD in 1968, he taught anthropology at several universities overseas before returning to New Zealand in 1977. He then established the first Māori studies department in the country.
In his later years, Sir Hirini became a prominent Māori advocate, representing numerous tribes in negotiations and serving on several advisory boards. He has also authored several publications on te ao Māori and presently, he chairs the council of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. This is a man who has accomplished great things in his life and contributed to Māori over the decades.
We had the absolute privilege of sitting down with this remarkable Māori leader to discuss the current state of Aotearoa, some of the highlights of his life and more.
