  • As the Germans advanced towards Stalingrad in the Summer of 1942, the war came to the locals of the city and evacuation was slow to the speed of the Wehrmacht’s advancement.
    Because the city bore Stalin’s name it was of a high importance for the morale of the Soviet forces to hold it.

And the heroism of my ancestors, and a VERY powerful partisan movement behind enemy lines, and the fact that they managed to transfer part of the industry from the western regions to the southern ones, and the presence of an operational and qualified command of the army and the country's leadership, and directly as a result of the battles. The fact that the city bore Stalin’s name was not the only reason the city had so much importance. At the time hitler wanted to control the Caucasus region to use the oil and other natural recourses to win the war.
    The plan was to encircle the Caucasus, then move south to take the region, and Stalingrad was one city that needed to be taken over to complete the encirclement. The reason this region is so important is because Germany was running out of oil and the Caucasus could supply them with enough oil to win the war, plus that would mean even more farmland and resources taken away from the soviets.

      The Volga was an important river to send supplies up further north. The Germans believed that controlling the Volga would starve out Russia further north, although Russia is pretty big and resource rich as we all know so this would not have a lot of effect on Soviet commerce. I think it was just an added bonus that Stalingrad held the name of Hitler's arch enemy. The attack for Army Group South was a two-pronged affair. One spearhead would attack southeast to the Caucauses and trap the Soviets against the mountains. The second spearhead would head straight east to protect the flanks of their southern neighbours and their northern neighbours of Army Group Centre at the same time. It is believed that the Volga River was the eastern limit as to not be overstretched, so it is doubtful the Sixth Army and 4th Panzer Army and their Romanian allies would have advanced further that year than Stalingrad. Hitler made two fatal errors here and of course his generals once again warned him of what would happen. First was storming Stalingrad with motorized infantry and tanks after bombarding the city with the Luftwaffe and field artillery. The logical choice here would have been to surround the city and then launch an assault on it. The Soviets were somehow getting enough forces and supplies across the river. Secondly, if the Soviets had surrounded the Sixth Army as they had done in our timeline, the Sixth Army should have immediately broke out. Doing so probably would have actually surrounded much of the Soviet forces. Also, the group headed to the Caucauses were dangerously thin and overstretched, and were skillfully retreating back northwest to avoid a massive encirclement which would have made Stalingrad seem not so big. The Germans over-committed in the fall of 1942. They could have succeeded fairly easily if Hitler let his generals conduct the war on the Eastern Front. The Soviets were nearly facing another collapse in 1942 as they had in 1941. Hitler got too cocky and would not listen to reason.

    Soldiers sent to penal battalions were put on the most dangerous missions. And they could redeem themselves back to regular infantry units if they accomplished objectives. Penal air squadrons were tried too, but quickly proved to be worthless. In the air a coward-pilot can't be controlled or well motivated. The German Army also had penal units.

    Hello, I am from Russia! Thank you for not forgetting about Eastern front because it so offensively and painful to folks who lived in the USSR that Western World (I mean prime people living in the Western World) doesn't know about great battles likewise Stalingard and we had many of them, for example, Battle of Kursk, Siege of Leningrad, Battle of Moscow, Belorussian offensive (operation "Bagration")in June 1944, Battle for Ukraine (1943-1944), Battle of Berlin and many other offensive operations planned and realised by Red Army. But we remember your battles, for exmaple, Battle of El-Alamein, D-Day (1944) and your assistance at Pacific theatre of WWII. Good channel!

      Mate some tens of thousands died in the battle of Thermopylae, from memory upwards of 25,000 Persians and probably less than a few thousand Greeks. At the Battle of Stalingrad, roughly 1.9 MILLION people died in 6 months alone. A staggering 5,000 Germans were dying PER DAY at Stalingrad. It was the moral defeat of the German army as well as being an enormous material and human loss; 300,000 men of the 6th army perished here. 90,000 were captured of which only 5,000 returned home... in the 1950s. A German soldier said that before Stalingrad they only ever moved forwards, after Stalingrad they only moved backwards. It was retreat and game over from there.

    My grandpa was part of the 8th italian army in the don front and the histories he told me about this battle and the next retreat are just too terrible (hundres of kilometers by foot and with temperatures of -40 or even worse). He always said that never wishes any young man to face something similar...

      @brandongonzales5547 6 років тому +12

      That still didn't change the outcome, lmao. They kind of intentionally abandoned major cities in order to lure his forces into exhausting their troops and resources before the winter came. Which Napoleon was not at all prepared for. As for the first world war, they only withdrew after Lennin took control and negotiated with The Germans to end fighting. The Brusilov offensive before that was a pretty major victory for the russians. The civil unrest and military desertions/mutinies and low morale contributed to them pulling out.
