Super helpful, thanks! My 12yo is so sick of science after a rigorous course we've been using this year, but I want to make sure she at least has some exposure to middle school science before getting into high school courses. These look like the perfect compromise. Thanks for showing the setup!
I'm in a similar situation. The biggest problem with Khan Academy is that you can't call a teacher and sometimes they don't understand the video. The best thing about it is that it's free and very time flexible.
Thank you for this video! We plan to use Khan Academy this year as our main curriculum for math and part of our curriculum for everything else. My 3 year old has been using Khan Academy Kids and we love that as well!
Thank you for getting back to me! Do you know the process of getting the child started for homeschooling? I want to start my child this coming September. Starting 7-8th grade. It’s middle school in NJ. Thank You.
In NJ you can just withdraw them and get started. There aren't any testing requirements or anything like that. Nj is one of the easiest states to homeschool. I recommend joining a local Facebook group (search homeschool NJ or homeschool and your county or town) and asking specific questions there. You can also check the NJ dept of education website. If you want to follow what would be taught in public school you can check the NJ state standards as well. Good luck!
If your child is in school you should get a class code and would only need a parent account. If you're homeschooling you don't have to set up the teacher account, you can just pick and grade or course and have your child start learning. If you want to assign specific courses and goals, you need a teacher account which you can sign up for free.
You can access the teacher dashboard from the parent account by checking off the box in the settings...I show later in the video but yes it is confusing!
If you're in the US, credits don't matter until 9th grade. So you can use whatever program you want and still start 9th grade whenever he would normally start. It's after 9th grade where it gets more complicated.
Hi Amanda. Thank you for this video. Have you come across any easy way to print out a "syllabus" for the Kahn classes? Also, have you seen any way to get an idea of how much time each course is equivalent to whether 1 or 2 semesters?
No I haven't found any type of scope and sequence or anything like that. As for the courses, are you talking about high school? I believe they are full year courses. It's been a long time since I was in high school, but we took geometry for a full year, pre calc for a full year, etc. and the number of units appear to line up with a years worth of work.
I am looking for something for my granddaughter to work on over the summer. She is currently in the 5th percentile in third grade. What would you recommend? Can I use IXL for just the assessments and a different program for learning each lesson? If so, which program has the best instruction on a skill? Trying to find instruction instead of just practice. Thank you so much for all your videos and any advice you can give me.
I just did a video on Study.com - ua-cam.com/video/-EGkSqUwq5w/v-deo.html - it's for kids 3rd grade and up and provides instruction/full curriculum in Math, Reading, Science and Social Studies. Or for something free, Khan Academy is very good. Just a little learning curve to get it all set up but otherwise the curriculum is very good.
Hi We live in Texas, apparently in Texas there's no regulations about homeschooling. What prove will I have that my son did accomplish his school year? Thank You
You don't need any proof. Where I live is similar. I keep some basic records in case it ever came to it (in the unlikely event that I was taken to court) but you aren't required to report anything to anyone.
That's great that you didn't need to create a separate parent account. Are you still able to edit the child account settings such as video playback speed and accessibility features?
Does Khan Academy teach state curriculum? Also does the state know when the child is enrolled into homeschooling when using these free websites? Im new to this and confused. Any advice? 😢
The state will not automatically get info, no. The laws are very different from state to state. I suggest starting with hslda.org/legal for an overview of the laws in your state.
@Amanda Melrose so can a student withdraw from his public school and do khan academy as home school? and would you have to file for homeschool legally then do khan academy as homeschool?
It depends on what state you live in what the laws are there. But in many cases yes you can use this for your homeschool program. Except past a certain age you will need a separate language arts curriculum.
@@AmandaMelrose so when i file the affidavit and put my child information and the school name of the home school what name do i put? khan academy since it is teaching my child i wanted to ask. how does the work you do on khan academy transcript into actual grades and credit and if u have certain grades in the public school do they transfer to the homeschool. @AmandaMelrose

We need to make all 3 accounts?? This seems really excessive, repetitive, and confusing.

I’m thinking of homeschooling my son for 7th and 8th grade this coming year. Can he use this program and return to high school and use this as credit?

@@AmandaMelrose I was talking about High School. Thanks Amanda.
They list the syllable digitally so all you have to do is print a screenshot of it.
This is soooooo helpful thank you 🙏🏾
You're welcome!
Really helpful! 🙏🙏Also when filing an affidavit should I just put khan academy as my kids school as it is he’s curriculum. How is it?
Follow the laws for your specific state but usually you would just put "homeschool" in any official documents.

Thanks for subbing!

I wish my state was like TX because as soon as you have to report things, they have a lot of control.
Does it have a progress report i can print out?
You can view a progress report but I'm not sure if there is any way to print it.
I signed up with a teacher and student account. I'm not sure why you needed a parent account?

That is up to your state and county requirements. My state requires everything to be reported to DOE.

@@murdamuzik9962did you ever figure it out
When i entered code it wouldnt let me join the class
Why would it be a challenge for homeschoolers?
If I remember correctly I was talking about the set up because it's designed more for classroom teachers. Not the curriculum.
How can I purchase these books??
Khan Academy is an online program and it's completely free.
@@AmandaMelrose I know but how I can have mathematics books 📚
@@AmandaMelrose I wanna purchase mathematics books
How do you get gpa?
Is it accredited?
Khan academy is not actually a school. Only a school can be accredited. Think of this more like a curriculum that just happens to be done online.
I’m in 4th grade but i don’t really like khan academy im 9 but imma still use khan kids since I used it since I was a 4 year old bye
Try miacademy maybe?
@@AmandaMelroseok!
U cant make a student account
I'm not sure what you mean but if you watch this video you can see how I set up the student and parent accounts.
