    Thanks for the good suggestions. I’m in agreement as to allowing some of the one, two, three gallons first develop in pots before plantings

      My orange dream is in clay soil and has grown massively! If we get past and drainage issues, the clay is full of nutrients

    And yes my back Garden is clay soil and my Bloodgood loves it. I was very surprised at the grow rate in the last 3 years. It wasn’t much thicker than a few twigs when I planted it. Now it’s 2/3’s the height of the fence

    Hello. Wonderful informative video. I have an Acer palmatum atropureum, little princess and orange dream in 3 litre pots. I've the 3 of them for 2 years. I live in Donegal in Ireland and we're prone to strong wind, rain and very cold winters. I put my pots into a poly tunnel from Dec-March incase of snow and bad frost.
    How do your acers fair and assume you get some harsh weather too? My garden is clay soil, on top of that I haven't huge space or obvious areas to plant trees and shrubs so if I do I'd need to plant dwarf variations like the little princess etc. I think I am probably best keeping the atropureum and orange dream in pots to control the size as they can get quite big.
    Finally, are most acers okay with direct light for 8/9 hours a day? I want to surrounded by these trees as they are the most stunning creations 😍

      Hi Little princess is actually not all that little, I’ve seen one 6-7 feet across but only 2 tall! Best keep in pots unless true dwarf varieties. Lots of sun in fine but only certain ones. Check out the channel for my recent video on Acers that like full sun, as some are also dwarf 👍

    I love watching your videos.
    May I ask how long acers can stay in pots? I really like them but don’t have space in the garden.

      Hi there and glad you’re enjoying the content. The answer is indefinitely really, every few years they will need a bigger pot or root pruning, but I have seen examples decades old 👍

    You can put them in a really large pot which gives the tree the impression it's in the ground, grows like it but you can still move the large pot around till the tree is happy

    • @Japanesemaples
      @Japanesemaples  3 місяці тому

      You certainly can, so long as you progress up the pot sizes slowly 👍

    Yes thanks, Carl. I'm a maple addict with about 57 of them all in pots.
    What advice do you give about compost for repotting now in view of the peat free advice which so far I have disregarded aa my peat based composts have been so successful.

    • @Japanesemaples
      @Japanesemaples  10 місяців тому

      Compost wise I have always used a 50/50 mix of John Innes no. 3 and ericaceous compost. Never been an issue for me either, apart from it hangs on to moisture well, so great in the summer but not wise to over pot. From speaking to growers the only thing they really hate is alkaline soil. Thanks for posting, Carl

    Hi, is this (may) a good time to plant into the clayish ground? I keep hearing contradictory advice re Spring! What drainage material do you recommend? Really appreciate all your resources thank you ☺️

    • @Japanesemaples
      @Japanesemaples  4 місяці тому +1

      In my opinion I have no issue with planting now, as the weather here in the Uk seems to be getting dryer. I may in fact be planting a tree myself soon, but do advise planting a tree that’s 3-4 years old and a bit more established. I have fairly clay soil, so I will put a couple of inches of pebbles under the root ball, making sure the final height is just above ground level. No doubt I will do a video on this 👍

      Thank you! I'd love to know where the concern about traumatising the roots by potting this time of year come from.. surely it can't be worse than being shipped! Really appreciate your reply and look forward to that video, thank you!
