Japanese Maples
United Kingdom
Приєднався 30 бер 2010
Japanese maples or Japanese Acers are my passion! If it's Red, Green or Yellow Japanese maples, full size, dwarf, upright, weeping, I love them all. If its watering, feeding, drainage, pruning, repotting or selecting cultivars, I hope to help others by sharing my experience of growing them. As well as how to care for maples I enjoy visiting locations across the UK to see them in their full grown glory. This could be spring summer or the autumn (fall) as they way these trees change colour throughout the year is truly amazing. Many of my trees are grown in pots, but some in the ground also and I am happy to advise on what to do if people have problems.
Japanese Maples: Is this normal? Preparing for winter!
Japanese Maples: Is this normal? Preparing for winter!
Japanese Maples loose their leaves each year as they are deciduous. Losing their leaves is a completely natural process and forms an important part of the trees life cycle. Here I share tips on dealing with the winter months, mainly considering what will happen when they leaf out next spring.
Ideal for beginners or more experienced Japanese Maple growers, in these videos I will show what practical steps I take to keep my Acer trees healthy during a year of gardening!
I hope you will follow me in my adventures with these wonderful trees
This video will help you grow better trees and for those with more experience, who want to improve the autumn colour, health and general quality of their Maples. Colour can also be improved all year by giving trees the right amount of sun.

Thank you for showing these mature trees. Not only are they beautiful, but seeing their shape and size is great!!
No problem 😉
Hi, I would like to know how many times a week on average you water your maples during the summer months?
I actually check them all daily but don’t water unless on the dry side. A given tree probably once every 2-3 days, less for the bigger ones more for trees still in their nursery compost and plastic pots 👍
@Japanesemaples thank you!
No problem 😉
Hi Carl. Many thanks for your sharing. I bought a Sangokaku maple from the nursery in the UK at half price three months ago. It’s nearly 2 meters tall and looks vibrant and colorful this autumn. Recently, I noticed dieback on some stems. Should I prune and repot it now, or would it be better to wait until February? I’m concerned that the dieback may spread and lead to bacterial infection in other stems.
I would definitely leave until late Feb early spring. Die back wont spread as such as it will go back to a leaf node. It’s tender new growth that has not hardened off. As the tree goes dormant and the wether gets wetter cutting stems will make things worse in my opinion 👍
@@Japanesemaples Thanks Carl. 👍
My Japanese maple started losing many of its leaves a few weeks ago. The weird thing is, I live in Southeast Asia, where the tropical season lasts all year without winter or fall. I’m not sure why this is happening; I bought it three months ago, and the leaves were vibrant red.
The life cycle has to happen regardless of location, probably a reduction in the number of daylight hours has triggered dormancy 🤔
I decided to plant mine in the ground (zone 7) and it took off! its about 15' now!
Lovely tree but yes in the ground many Acers will put on loads of growth once established 👍
Great videos! What do you recommend for a sun tolerant Japanese maple that has very bright red leaves at its peak (rather than purple or green) and grows upward rather than out (in a pot or out of a pot) and gets no taller than 10-12 feet in its lifetime? We have a corner in our tiny urban yard and I am dying to out a Japanese maple in but I don't want it to take up too much horizontal space so that we still maintain our yard!
Hubbs Red Willow trained upright could work or Twobleys Red Sentinal. Both in pots would be more manageable 👍
Thank you so much! I should have added that I'm in zone 6 in the U.S. but based on what I've read, it sounds like all Japanese varieties should do well in my zone. One other question: what's the best time to purchase a potted Japanese maple- early Spring, presumably?
@ most are sold in the spring through to mid summer. A good supplier will sell a tree with a pot though of roots in spring and a repot one size works well so the pot is full of roots for next winter 👍
Thanks for the tips!!
Looking to get one of these! Beautiful foliage !
They are lovely 😻
I want to get one of these so bad!
Nice tree even in winter 👍
I often buy Japanese maples at this time of year. Occasionally I’ve been able to snap up quite a large tree that has been put on sale with 25% or even 50% off as garden centres look to clear their stock ready for the next season.
Yes it’s a great time for a bargain!
It's nice that you can drive to a place and see so many different cultivars. I live in the US and just purchase small ones my mail. I get large ones at a local nursery, but there are not so many different cultivars at local nurseries close to where I live.
Yes I’m lucky ☺️ actually there aren’t many places in the uk 🇬🇧 but it’s well worth an hour in the car 👍
Hi, can I just ask where you got those custom slate markers and the hooks?
Hi I have a video on labels here: Garden Labels: Hand Written vs. hand made! ua-cam.com/video/cXNIVQaG1RI/v-deo.html
Great work here it looks promising . Did you do a follow up on your results somewhere. Inspirational .
Sadly I had to spend some time away from the grafts to look after my mom and they dried out! With have a go again next year 👍
Interesting video and I enjoyed it. I only have a bloodgood still in leaf. Everything else (26 maples ) have dropped . All are in pots and quite young plants. Some are quite whippy and all over the place. Do you prune in winter to tidy the growth and get a more attractive shape. Or just wait and cut much thicker branches when they are much older. I am concerned about trees bleeding and getting a more natural balanced shape. Well done excellent work with your videos.
Hi and glad you enjoy the content. I choose to prune very little but would do this in March in the UK while the trees are still dormant. In this way you can see the shape better out of leaf and the spring growth spurt will help heal the trees. I would not cut them back more than around 20% of their size in one season so a little prune each year is better. I also think careful selection of a cultivar with the right growth rate and habit when purchasing can save a lot of effort in years to come. Carl
You have an amazing collection !! Never seen so many species at the same place ;). In france my maples still have their leaves... and unfortunately some of them have powdery mildew :/
It’s been so wet in Europe this year mildew is quite common! The trees all dropping their leaves will get rid of it and give you a fresh start next year👍
I use my blower to blow off my lace-leaf’s because I find that the leaves can get stuck or hung up and that helps catch and trap the snow, which can add so much weight it can break branches.
That’s a great tip 👍
do I have to eliminate the buds that start to swallow from the rootstock while the scion didn't take off yet? thx!
No I would leave the buds in place until the scion is established 👍
Hi I would usually buy my plants from a reputable nursery, but on a visit to b&q I managed to buy 7 different maples for under £20saving nearly £60 on retail price. What would you do about the fabric starter pot that’s still in most of them? I know they’re supposed to be biodegradable but it must restrict the roots, should I remove it in late winter/early spring? Thanks
Hi and personally I would carefully remove them when repotting early March when they are still dormant. These trees are often very over-potted so you might actually need to reduce by a pot size or two 🤔👍
@@Japanesemaplesthanks for the prompt response & advice 👌. Love the channel mate keep up the good work
@@d4niels0nno problem 👍
Hi carl, what an amazing collection and your videos are very informative. Just a quick queestion, i am from Philippines, somewhere in city area and i have a new Red Emperor JM, do you think this will survive in a direct sunlight? Given that we are in a tropical climate. Sun is very intense.
Hi and I’m sorry to say no I would give your tree some shade. That cultivar in Europe or North America would be fine so will be listed as sun tolerant, but basically Acers live in the shade of other trees in Japan so need some shade. 👍
@@Japanesemaples thank you so much man! more power to your amazing channel.
3:21 what tree is that? Its fascinating
Hi it’s Acer Yasemin 👍
Hi. How often is it good to water the maples in November or December?
Hi with no leaves they hardly need anything in the UK winter. If it’s a really dry spell for 3-4 days I will check them with a water meter as water the odd one if needed. 👍
@@Japanesemaples Thanks for the answer!
I just bought 11 more Maples to add to my in progress garden. I really like those signs you have. Did you make them? or where can you buy them? I'm in the US. All your trees look so good.👍
Hi here is the label video 👍 Garden Labels: Hand Written vs. hand made! ua-cam.com/video/cXNIVQaG1RI/v-deo.html
这或许就是用容器种花的一些弊端吧。用容器容易遇见一些排水不良或施肥过度的情况,并且还会有更多的病虫害。如果直接种到地里的话多余的水分则可以排到土地深处,抗病性也更强
I agree, however if you don’t have the space for potentially very large trees pots are the best option 👍

How to look after ever red acer in winter?
In the UK zone 8 they are fully hardy. It’s new growth in the spring that needs care 👍
@@Japanesemaples Thank-you never had an acer before and terrified of abusing it!!in spring special care please advise if possible.
Very pretty!
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful! Did you plant all these maples? I am currently starting a Bonsai nursery and would love to get your opinion! I am a huge maple fanatic and have tons of them in my garden. But for the nursery I want to plant loads of mother trees where we can airlayer the tops off to create new trees/clones. From Shishigashira to Seigen. Anyway the field soil is clay, which is always pretty moist, im not scared about the root rot but rather the lack of water intake in summer as we can't water the trees, we planted tons of pines so far and there we are pretty sure they will survive in full sun even if its dry. Most of my Bonsai Maples i keep in full sun as I water them daily in summer, i made the experience that the fall colors are just much more powerful compared to half shade. Due to the lack of Water intake on the nursery im pondering about planting some maples in the half shade. Also i already planted a few to see if they will survive the winter in the field (pretty optimistic). Thanks for your time!
Hi sorry but this is not my nursery and as you will see from my other videos nearly all of mine are in pots.
Hi Carl. Having really awful wet summer/autumn this year. I am looking to give the best drainage possible and putting a handful of perilite into the soil and compost mix. Do you have any expert advice on how to achieve really good drainage or would the perilite be sufficient if I use a decent ratio of the stuff? Thanks.
Honestly I don’t even use perlite. For me the trick is to use porous pots and keep their size relatively small. It’s a balancing act really as if we have a dry summer and spring this year we might wish for better water retention 👍
@@Japanesemaples been a shocking summer for rain so was just a bit concerned with the constant wet soil and potential root issues. They are all young so just being a bit catious with them. Had to bring them in the house a few times as it seemed to rain a few days in a row multiple times. Irish climate at it's finest 🫣
Interesting advice about rapid growth size and staking the dissectums to shape them. Well done Carl. Thank you.
@@robertjohn819 glad you found it useful 👍
Lovely tour thank you! Am I right in thinking the fireglow and the osakazuki still have a lot more growing to do? I love them both but know they're probably a smidge big for my garden, wish I could find something just a smidge smaller with that leaf shape and habit!
Phoenix shin deshojo. Jerry shwartz might work
Great advice. Beautiful tour or some gorgeous maples.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've just bought my first a little princess, am goin to keep it in a pot and do exactly what you said test where I put it first two seasons ,then check how much it progresses , I'll go up a couple of pots to but when it's time I'll put it in the ground but am looking to get another 3 for my garden and just watch them take shape over the next few years
They are lovely but please note they are the widest maples I have seen compared to their height! 👍
Great video again Craig, it is an amazing place to visit. It looks like you had a great time . Shame I didn't bump into you on your visit day, as I have been there five times in the last month. The colour changes have been dramatic in both areas , also the number of visitors. I am going again Thursday 17th so it will be interesting to see if there are still any leaves left .

Should do yes as long as it’s been healthy during the growing season 👍
Hi about five of my maples lost there leaves about a month ago.there young trees is this normal,or do you think something is wrong thanks
Many trees have had a hard year this year. As long as they have made buds ready for next year it will be fine 👍

Your welcome 🙏
My Japanese maple tree started turning brown around June and now its leafs are all gone it’s just brunches 😢 I googled and found your channel. We’re located in Southern California which hardly rain and mostly dry in air. What did I do wrong with it? We got it from local nursery and I thought I did everything they told me to do 😢😢 I wanted to see colored 🍁 in fall.
In hot climates they need a lot of shade but also lots of protection from wind. In Japan they grow under larger trees that offer both!
I never use that recycled compost! People throw all sorts of garden waste out for recycling, not all of it disease or chemical free! I’ve had bindweed in my pots from using it in the past and although not used these days, Glyphosate residue!
Indeed!
Where did you get your lovely plant identification tags
Hi 👋 I order the blanks off Amazon then use a Laser pecker 2 engraver. I’ve a video on labels on the channel 👍
Just picked up a Katsura about that size which cost me £27 and I thought that was a bargain!
Very 👌
I want to ask about your clay pots, do they crack or break in winter if there is a freeze and if you do any protective steps to prevent that, also what is the lowest temperatures that these trees experience in your location. thx.
Occasionally one breaks but it’s rare. The lowest temperature is -2or-3 and usually short periods of time 👍
@@Japanesemaplesthank you for ur quick reply 🙏
Carl, do you mean not to repot even all leaves changed color and dropped ? I’m planning to repot around November , as they will become dormant .
Personally I like them to be actively growing soon after repotting, so late Feb early March in the uk. I can’t see the logic of adding compost that will not be used by the tree 👍
@@Japanesemaplesthanks for your professional comment . As I’m planting other flowers like roses , I’ve learnt that best timing to move them is when they are dormant. Seems it’s different for a tree .
