Japanese Maples: Secrets of selection and care in full sun. Dry damaged bunt leaves can be a big issue for Acers!
This video contains a selection of Japanese maples that grow in full sun, as well as a host of information on how to care for them! Acers have evolved to grow in the shade of other tree, but many are able to tolerate direct sunlight without burning their leaves. There are limits of course, but these all work well in my garden!
Ideal for beginners or more experienced Japanese Maple growers, in these videos I will show what practical steps I take to keep my Acer trees healthy during a year of gardening!
I hope you will follow me in my adventures with these wonderful trees
This video will help you grow better trees and for those with more experience, who want to improve the autumn colour, health and general quality of their Maples. Colour can also be improved all year by giving trees the right amount of sun.

    Hi Carl, the hardest part for me is to distinguish between overwatering and underwatering. For example some of my maples show the same "scorch" on the leaves, uniformely all around the plant, but how can I be sure that the problem is overwatering? I also have a meter, and the top 10cm of the compost is totally dry, but then deeper it is almost saturated. I thought of just sprinkling a bit the top soil to try and have the moisture as uniform as possible, and it seems to be keeping the trees stable, definitely in winter I will repot them to a better, more airy soil with a wiser pot choice to match the root ball size. Till then, any recommendations? Thanks, Kostas

      @Japanesemaples День тому

      @@kostastheo2043 good points here! If it’s dry leaves all over it’s probably the roots not providing enough water. If the pot is not drying out evenly then the pot is too big / the roots are not developed enough. Definitely water as your doing as the fine roots of maples at the top are important. Over time it then should balance out.

    • @Japanesemaples
      @Japanesemaples День тому

      @@kostastheo2043 until winter just keep going as they won’t get much from rain at this time of year. It’s next spring that over potting will be critical and in smaller pots with healthy roots will grow faster!

    I need a primer for giving my young coral bark structure. It wants to be shrubby and was growing in a dense twist in one direction. I dont think it will ever send any branches to the other side without physical force. Do you have any advice for correcting the growthh on this variety? 😎

      That’s a great question and honestly I have never trained a tree other than staking up the leader to get height. Each tree does have a very characteristic habit and despite being genetic clones grow differently from one another. Try turning it 180 for a year to see if that helps otherwise if you buy more trees checkout my videos for some that are more shrub like 👍

    I have tended to over-pot my new maples, and they really have been soggy and heavy. I've decided to remedy this not by down-potting, but by re-potting into a really well-draining soil: 3 parts pine bark, 1 part perlite, 1 part peat moss. Even when freshly watered they are now so much lighter and the water drains through quite readily. I'm optimistic I'll see some good summer rebound on those that have been sluggish to this point.

    • @Japanesemaples

      Hi and yes using a mix like that is a perfectly valid solution. That type of mixture it’s basically what the Acer growers use and works well. The issue is however is they dry out super fast and will need / waste a lot more water. Most growers use poly tunnels that prevent wind and direct sun reaching the trees so I think there is always a balance. I’ll have a video out soon on compost and watering strategies. Thanks for posting, Carl

    I have most of mine in a minimum of half a day of unfiltered sun... some even longer. I water them real well though, and they do generally very well. If I get a stretch of 90+ degree days, I might get some leaves burning at the tips, but only on the top branches. The lower branches remain lush. I especially like how my red plants will get a lot of lush green leaves towards the base of the tree/bush. It is simply amazing how nature tries to find a way to grow!! Thanks for sharing.

    For those of us in Zone 10 and up (Coastal S. California, Florida, Coastal Australia, etc.), Japanese maples will burn even under 40% shade cloth. The lack of humidity and higher temperatures makes them next to impossible to grow well. Most of us simply accept that they will burn.

    Great video I think sun damage is a very broad topic, for example you could have a very strong shishigashira that is perfectly fine and lush in full sun all day, then you could have a much weaker tree of the same cultivar that can not handle sun at all maybe for many years until it can grow its waxy coatings, there could be a number of reasons for this, maybe the tree was grown from a cutting or a layer, or maybe it’s on its own roots or doesn’t have a very strong root system or produces leggy soft growth… Also age, previous care, substrate and wind can play a huge role in leaf health… I totally get some cultivars are more adapted to full sun, but its also worth keeping a good eye on so called sun loving trees incase they suffer

      @Japanesemaples 12 днів тому

      The range of environmental factors is indeed infinite, even down to the microclimate of a particular location. I agree you can therefore never be 100% certain how a tree performs, but much as I dislike generalisations they are generally correct. Best thing to test with your own trees and see what happens 👍

    Interesting video as always! I have a new build house that I moved into in march the garden is getting much more sun than anticipated, also there are no mature trees around ATM because nobody has planted anything yet. I am just about to start a Japanese styled garden and would like to know could you please name five sun tolerant Acer’s that I can consider adding to my collection? I am in south Wales quite near the coast.

      Seiryu, Ryusen, Shishigashira, Tamukyama, Emerald lace, Firegliw. These will all be featured in next weeks video. I had exactly the same problem! Carl

    Very informative thank you. I did notice with my Moonrise a couple of months ago when we had more sun it was turning the lovely orange colour but now with the lack of Sun for the last few weeks it's going back to being more green. The problem where I am in Cornwall the clouds blow in from the coast and just sit above our town which I think is ranked the 7th wettest City in the UK

    I envy your weather, its 35 here in the Southern US. Even my Shishigashira, Seiryu and Osakazuki are feeling the heat and struggling (in pots). Your Ukigumo is beautiful! Such a striking looking tree.

      Thank you the weather is certainly quite Japan like here in the UK. A couple of years ago I saw Maples doing fine at 50 degrees here in poly tunnels.as they got no direct sun or wind which I found interesting 🤔 Been a good year for Ukigumo as with poor weather it leafed out really slowly 👍

    Lovely garden, I have a mollycoddled little Orange Dream bonsai which has been in full sun and has a 'sun tan' with no burning yet - Its almost fully red/orange! Definitely moving him to some shade now the weather is improving

    Great video, weather has been less favorable here in The Netherlands as well. It did bring me some powdery milldew on my maples yay! Do you have some experience with milldew?
