I'm so glad I'm not the only one who actually feel like they have a bond with their character Kazuya and Kazumi are like family to me And dragunov is a pretty cool uncle ig
Something that motivates me right now, as I am searching for another character to pick up, is the constant talk about what characters ppl think are trash or just downright unpopular. All the negativity around Gigas, Ganryu, Lars, Lili, Lei, and Xiaoyu that I see has ironically made them that much more interesting to me, and have took all them to practice mode just this week. One of my fav things about Tekken is the characters. One of my fav things about competitive Tekken is the representation all across the roster. If someday I can compete at high level and increase the amount of Gigas or Lili on stream then I think that would be lovely. I don’t quite yet have a defined “playstyle” so for now, I am just trying out several characters anyway so ... why not yknow? Also T7 is my first Tekken and I have a hard time adjusting to the reputation Ganryu has as unpopular or uncool etc. I love his design in this game and I think he deserves more respect... the outfit and facial hair is an insane upgrade from his old designs
I deadass picked Paul Phoenix as my main character because of his hair. Back then I always knew Paul was from Tekken, even though I didn't know what Tekken was, if that makes any sense. I suck at Tekken, but I love playing as Paul.👊
As someone who played older Tekken games, but never took them seriously enough to learn matchups and frame data, I can 100% recommend Claudio for 1 simple reason: having the smallest movepool in the game, but with some really good key moves allows you to move away from learning your character to actually learning the game a lot sooner. Since you become familiar with the whole moveset much quicker than with other characters, you can start to learn how to apply those moves in actual "real" situations, which in turn speeds up the process of learning new characters. When it comes to actual matches, with a character like Claudio, even if you have good moves, you still rely a lot more on fundamentals, and since you can't mix up your opponent to hell and back like a Yoshi would, you will spend less time thinking about what to do with your character; instead you will spend your time on seeing and analyzing your opponent's behavior, and how to react in turn, which will then help you recognize patterns in your opponent's gameplan, making you improve a lot faster.
For me personally, as long it's a character I have fun with, that's what matters to me. I chose Law cuz of how smooth his playstyle felt, and Kazuya for a secondary because of playing him in previous installments.
Many people have said this but not so many have ever worded it so well. Relationships are definitely built with your characters over time, they feel like avatars in a way.
My god is this true,I felt so good when I went to am Offline tournement and people called me the jin main,it kinda made me proud of my charracter,it truly is like an avatar
You can put Leo in the "Good for Learning Fundamentals" category too. Very well rounded character, teaches you crouch dash cancels, wall splat game, introduction to counter hit launch, frame traps, poking, parrying, a bit of everything, really
Really good video. I still haven't settled on a main myself. For the longest time, I've been super self conscious about who I should be playing, more than any other fighting game, because of community perception and how we judge each other by our character choices.
Honestly, for me, if I’m not using a Mishima, it doesn’t feel like Tekken. The appeal of Tekken for me, is the movement, wave and backdash and electrics. If a character doesn’t have those things, It just doesn’t feel like Tekken.
I've never had a character crisis as severe as when I picked up Tekken. Between Jack, Marduk, and Gigas, I always feel like I'm missing something when playing any one of them
Videos like these are why MainMan is one of my favorites. I wish I knew how to not care what other people think. That probably ruined Tekken for me more than anything. Fantastic video my dude.
Thing bout Tekken is there's a lot of characters that I find interesting xD, I like how xiaoyu feels, I like Lili because I'm French, I like fahkumram because I love and practice muay Thai and the moves are beautiful, and I like the ninja girl because she looks awesome.. and I mean... I can play a panda!!!
The first character I ever picked was Steve, he didn't click with me though. But when I first picked Bryan I instantly fell in love. Maybe it's the orbital, his shouts during some of his moves, his little evil cackle, and the way he shouts YES after his bluespark strings. I won't change him. Ever.
All I can say is,pick the charracter you like (how he/she looks or fights whatever you like about him/her)and just go and have fun :D,when it gets hard you have to get better, with training mode, watching your replays, labing charracters etc,the most thing is that you have fun, just try not to ruining it for other people
As a beginner I fell in love with Steve fox when I first saw him in Tekken 7 then I got more into tekken and learned about maining a character and of course chose Steve fox
I started learning Tekken back in the Tag 1 days and only properly with Tag 2 and always played Kazuya. Introduced the game to friends recently who started playing as Law, Fahk and Leroy and I quickly realised I had still little to no idea how to punish properly, condition people, learn the frame data etc and so I picked up Leo and I absolutely love playing as her, so much more fun and way more powerful toolset than Kaz. I think if you're getting really frustrated with your main, just swap it up with someone you think looks cool and enjoy the learning process
Tbh, it's more on what you think is about the character or whatever you feel comftable with playing. In my case, I chose Kazuya bcuz he is cool, and I got comftable playing with him.
I've never had trouble picking my mains in any fighting game because I tend to really latch on because I know that the sooner I pick a main the more efficient my time management will be for my skill growth. But the reason I picked Steve is more of an abstract reason rather than picking him because I like his move list or personality. I am biased towards counter punchers and counter hitters. Most knockouts in combat sports are usually the result of counterhits where the attacker catches their opponent moving forward or intercepts their attack with a better timed one. That shit is cool to me and I love that counterhits matter in Tekken as they actually do nothing in other games. That's why I play Steve because I think timing an opponent out is cerebral and Infinitesimally more complicated and satisfying than executing a mixup.
Just pick whoever you feel drawn to the most. For me, it's Alisa (obviously) but lately Kazumi has started to grow on me. But Alisa is, was, and will forever be my main in this game.
I am a hwo main... I often see that people don't wanna remach me in online, many people call me scrub, and whoreang main, I often hear negative things from tekken content creators. It's really hard to stay calm when your character considered dumb, easy and zero iq. Really trying to ignore that kind of stuff. So, sorry for that long text, but I feel that I have to speak out. Thanks for reading this, hope you have a nice day!
I don't know why, but I always felt like Paul is the perfect starter character to learn, he's like the bread and butter character of Tekken, which I guess is part of what appealed to me so much about him to main him, but interestingly enough, my other favorites are some of the hardest characters to master, such as Devil Jin, Jin, Kazuya, Lee and Bryan.
I started to play bryan a week ago and I like his style of juggling because it’s so satisfying to do so. Do you have any recommendations similar to bryan?
@@lokiam5662 Well, characters of similar difficulties and intensities would go a long way, so I'd highly recommend Kazuya, maybe King and Armor King too, they might have a slightly different game plan that involves using a lot of throws, but they're also pretty complicated and intense, obviously Paul, but he's not as difficult, just very similar in some ways to Bryan, all four have very satisfying combos/juggles.
Yo i been running Lei for like a week. He’s different to use but I love how creative you can get with his strings. All his style variations keep the matches interesting and my opponents unsure of what to do
As a Kazuya/Bruce/Josie main, I also like playing nearly everyone in the roster online. It keeps me well rounded. Getting those rare wins with the bears and Gigas is so satisfying.
I like Eliza's design and attacks playing her feels nice even tho I lose all the time, but when I win I feel proud of that win because it's not easy.. I'm a new player, so she is super hard for me.. Not super new but like not experienced enough to be good. I love 2d
So true and excelent explanation of how many of us can have an special bond with certain character, for me my special bond will always be jin, i played him since tekken 3 and i always loved his karate style and the design of the character, in tekken 7 i had some struggles learning more stuff like punish or predicting moves to parry but know i can say i improved a lot, thank you tmm to share this with the community
Nobody gives a damn, but I'll tell my story anyway. Since Tekken 6 I was in love with Miguel. Everything about him just worked for me: the fighting style, the appearance, the laugh, EVERYTHING. But since I'm easily bored and I was a filthy casul, I never tried to learn him and just played a little bit of who I preferred at the time. Then Tekken7 arrived and I decided to learn how to play Tekken in a proper way, so I decided to main my spanish boi and man... It was hard and frustrating: I was making always the same mistakes, I never learned movement, I never really learned how to use his SAV stance. I reached yellow ranks and dropped him, thinking he was too weak. Then Lei arrived and OMG HE WAS FUN. I had the funniest time EVER in my Tekken experience with him. But everyone was mean to him, I was an Idiot, I thought I had to change character. I was thinking about maining Katarina, but that of course would have been even worse!! So I had my first main crisis and tried MANY other characters, following pros' tips about the best characters to learn the game with/crush anyone online. After 1 year I decided to pick Shaheen: I liked him a bit and I did get better, I reached middle orange ranks. But I wasn't having real fun. I was doing my homework. In facts, I dropped the game. 2 years have passed now, and I can see things in a clearer way. Tekken is a game. A hard, frustrating, competitive game. The only way to enjoy it, is having fun. And to have fun in this game, you have to enjoy the ride, not to reach a destination: pick the character you like from the start and if you don't like him/her, change him/her with the one you have more fun with. Because it doesn't matter the difficulty, you're going to learn everything (at a slower pace maybe, but you'll eventually make it) anyway. It doesn't matter the strenght, if you learn how to play you're going to win against anyone anyway. It doesn't matter what other people think: they're going to cry about their loss anyway.
Great video. I started playing tekken a month ago with king because it call my attention and it looked cool to me and also a friend who is teaching me the game said that is a really good character to keep with, but i really like characters with gimmicks in general (i play Faust in gg and Lowain in gbvs) so i want to play yoshi here and your video helps me a lot in my decision ^^
Ironic you said this. There is an anime game called Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax, there's a tierlist where as in a character who isn't even supposed to be S tier became S tier because of a fan of that character played her so well she became S tier.
I remember when I played Tekken for the first time (which was Tekken 6, btw the oldest title I've properly played was 5DR) and the first character I played as was Alisa. This was because I really liked how she looked. As I got older, I started to main Asuka and eventually picked up Xiaoyu too, and became very well accustomed to them. I used to only play female characters (kinda still do that), but I've been thinking about picking up Lars, Kazuya and Hwoarang (to give myself a bit of a challenge). I've picked Lars due to those BUFFLARS memes, Kazuya because he's considered the defensive Mishima and my playstyle is mostly defensive and Hwoarang simply because I think he's hot.
I'm a Noctis main. Growing up and playing Tekken, I played Mishimas and when T7 first came out, I played DVJ. Well, before Noctis was released, I had played FF15 and really loved the story and fell in love with Noctis as a character, so when he did finally get released, of course I wanted to try him out, and just like in FF15, I fell in love with how he plays and eventually I switched to just maining him. Now with that being said, I get a BUNCH of hate mail from people, especially "pay to win" and "hes very cheap and OP". At first I cared a lot about what people said, but now, especially after realizing that Noctis has NEVER won a tournament or even been in top 8 in TWT, and also after he got nerfed, I really stopped caring and I really have genuine fun playing Noctis and using his different tools. Moral of the story, play who you LIKE, and screw what people say. I loved Noct in FF15, I love him in T7, he has never won a tournament, he certainly is not the best in the game, and this has all been fuel for me to be the very best Noctis player in the world and to try my heart out with the character.
Good vid. Something I didn't hear tho were characters that have stances. Maybe that falls into the design part of the video. But I started playing Leo, Lei, Feng, Hworoang for their stance play. Steve main btw
I'm learning Steve and friends that plays t7 at pretty good level told me to quit Steve because it's really hard to start with and also you need strong fundamentals. But one of them told me "keep grinding him, don't care about what others says about your character". And altho I keep struggling with him I enjoy tfo playing t7
I feel you man, have loved steve since tekken 5 and tried to use him online in 7 recently and its Hard. As. Fuck. Hes not my main so I dont really use him much and am now concentrating on my main but for you yeah man. Stick with him if you really like him, one thing I always loved about steve is hes really fun to use
@@1KQ_ bruh, the amount of fun I have with that blonde britain boxer is humongous. And I also made the things even harder just by only using 5 to 6 moves. Only fundamentals not cheesing until I get a decent level. Gotta keep it honest. And that's where it gets rough.
Akuma was my first main because I came in with Virtua Fighter being the only 3D fighter I ever really learned and having played games like Street Fighter, KOF and Capcom vs SNK for a decade. I switched to Kazuya once I realized how different Tekken was, and I enjoyed being thrown into the deep-end there. Aside from some cheeky hellsweeps in low-ranks, he has practically no gimmicks to use as a crutch. I like honest characters in fighting games like that. EDIT: I'm glad someone with a community as large as MainMan is just straight-up saying that picking a character that's seen as cheap doesn't make you a scrub. The amount of nonstop hate Akuma players got in early Season 3 was insane and really highlighted how toxic the community can be sometimes.
Zafina became my waifu in Tekken 7 lol. Her visual look and movements were so mesmerizing to me. When she got released for S3 I fell for her. King has been my long time fav character though since Tekken 3. The fact he wears a jaguar mask, growls and does cool wrestling moves always appealed to me. He is my homeboy and we still hangout at times but Zafina became like a hot girlfriend that always wants my attention lol.
I have 1200+ wins with Nina (Sazuku) on ranked battles, and 0 wins with all other characters combined. Tekken 7 was the first game I played after Tekken 3 and TG1. I am an old gamer who left the scene and came back after getting married and becoming a father of a three-year-old kid. Needles to say I barely have enough time to play, let alone learn characters. I know it sounds crazy, but I simply picked Nina because she was my go-to character in Tekken 3. I was surprised that most of her moves we're still there. Lol lucky me.
I picked Yoshi in Tekken 1 because he had a sword. In Tekken 2, when I discovered he could fly, heal AND kill himself I fell in love. There’s no one more fun. Though I do like Noctis a lot in this game
ok, this is what I suggest beginners should do : (1) You go to the movelist and see the commands it requires to perform those moves. If there are a lot of qcf or half circles or even back forward commands, try to stay away from those characters. (2) Make a list of characters that have the simplest possible commands. (3) Finally pick one amongs those whom u like the best and GRIND.
yeah i picked up feng first, and rather than learning fundamentals, i needed to learn 80% of his movelist first. There's definetly some characters better suited to learn fundamentals
I started as a Raven main in T6 but then in T7 when it switched to Master Raven I wasnt a fan of the playstyle anymore so i dropped her for Miguel and I love the character so much. #BuffSpain
I was always a Bruce Lee fan growing up so my favorite character most of the time was Law. However, my main character changes depending on the game. For example, in Tekken 3 it was Law, but in Tekken 4 it was Kazuya, and in Tekken 5 it was Steve Fox, and in Tekken 7 my main is Law.
I ended up maining Leo because i liked how powerful his moves look and feel, and because he she is kinda easy but also has some stupidly advanced techniques (rolldash cancel combos anyone?) so after 200 hours on the character i still feel like i have stuff to learn, which gives me motivation. I think paul is similar in a way (only more busted) easy to use on low levels but also has some technical high lvl stuff that you can learn as you get better over time. the characters tekken 7 introduced lack this kind of progression. They are painfully simplistic.

If most of players aim to be a pro player, watch ur pro idol how they play, if u want just to play for fun just play whatever u want easy peazy
I started at tekken 5 and jumped to Tekken 7,Jin truly is a great charracter
The beginning of the video's fricking hilarious! LMFAOOOOO
Main man I love ur vids bro 🙏🏿

Lol true
Leo got left in the closet feelsbad, Leo is a good pick too for learning the basics of tekken helped me so much after picking steve as my first main.
You're going to start to feel the tier list importance when you reach red and purple ranks
Ironic you said this. There is an anime game called
Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax, there's a tierlist where as in a character who isn't even supposed to be S tier became S tier because of a fan of that character played her so well she became S tier.
@ 6:27 "I looked at ASSlan's tier list"
low blow tmm, low blow
My issue is I keep finding characters that interest me either aesthetically or gameplaywise, but never both.
I watch all your videos I will subscribe one day. Keep up the good work and I hope you are keeping your workout progress going.
It's simple.

2:59 what a legendary get up by knee 😂
Yeah I‘m very Interested in the 1,2,3 fighting style
*chu chu.... gattling gun 😎
Good vid. Something I didn't hear tho were characters that have stances. Maybe that falls into the design part of the video. But I started playing Leo, Lei, Feng, Hworoang for their stance play.
Steve main btw
Wait a sec. Didn't you dump Kazuya for Marduk?
I chose Bryan as my main character in Tekken 7, he's very hard to master if you're a novice like me, but damn, his moves are dope af
Same,i just joined now and i keep dropping combos and getting whooped, but i like him the most
Akuma was my first main because I came in with Virtua Fighter being the only 3D fighter I ever really learned and having played games like Street Fighter, KOF and Capcom vs SNK for a decade.
I like you.
People say players are dumb and they just can click some buttons.
Well, you're opposite of that.
one time, before I even knew what tekken was, King came to me in a dream
Also, Kazuyas damage in season 3 is crazzzyyyyy, esp with rage and or his rage drive. He's the OG round robber before Geese got here.
He is my homeboy and we still hangout at times but Zafina became like a hot girlfriend that always wants my attention lol.
same bruh, she looked bland in previous games I saw her in but they really did something special with her in Tekken 7.
For example, in Tekken 3 it was Law, but in Tekken 4 it was Kazuya, and in Tekken 5 it was Steve Fox, and in Tekken 7 my main is Law.
my passion is destroying my opponent with low tiers then ki charging everytime i win.
3 bar Law main?
Law is not low tier though.
@@Goteiii eddy
Marduk because he has the mount and grabs from every fucking position, as well as parries. Shit is so cash
Great video. I always play as Julia just because I find her fun to use. I never win anything because I suck with her but I'm happy lol.
I’m facing a real issue. I just can’t play any character but Paul. Paul been my main for so long I need to reconsider picking a character.
I play Bob and I get comments like “stupid Bob”
Very helpful for beginner like myself, thanks!
