I can't believe I just watched a four hour movie on Project Zomboid, and nearly cried
Can't ask for a better review than that! It's still somewhat insane to me that people actually make it through the whole saga, but I absolutely love knowing that I've managed to keep so many of you entertained!

A life he was born into, and the life he found when staring death in the face.

Jamie and Devin's final moments together was genuinely some of the most emotionally impactful dialogue i've heard in any movie or video. Bravo man, that was a great watch.
Really do appreciate that. I still remember being so incredibly insecure about releasing that part of the story, but it appears to have fully hit the mark. Thank you. :)
The "I'm scared" broke me so hard I expected it but it still hit me like a truck.
Their relationship and eventual demise is probably the roughest emotional rollercoaster I've had to try and act out. It's a real gut punch if it lands the right way, and I'm happy to hear it's had the desired effect for most.
It’s the rarest thing a man can say to another. It shows his unfathomable trust in Jamie.
It’s also in sharp contrast with his headstrong attitude, his courage when looking for the generator and killing zombies.
Finally it’s the last words of someone who had just become a man, turning eighteen, but those words are the voice of the boy he has been all his life, crying out one last time.
Cramming all of those meanings in two words is nothing short of masterful character writing. I wish blockbuster movie writers had half of your talent, sir.
The end had me going through stages of grief, and Jamie's character development completed the story, making it one of the best Project Zomboid videos I've ever seen.
It's always interesting to hear how everyone reacts to the conclusion, but it's amazing to hear that a large section of the viewers genuinely connected and hurt when the story finally wrapped up. Though the game tries its best to prepare you to let go, it's never easy.

You have realized something that few do, when to be silent. Your narrative is awesome, but the silence and pure gameplay in-between make the narration more powerful. Great story.
I still feel like I over-narrate a bit, since a lot of the time when I'm editing the video together before I prepare the script, I get lost in just watching the gameplay slip by.
Anyway, I'm certainly glad that there are a fair few people who enjoy a few minutes of "peace and quiet" amongst the standard ADHD UA-cam meta. :P
A true masterpiece 😢 Jamie and Devin deserved a world without zomboids. Maybe one day I’ll stumble across Jamie’s farm and final resting place while fishing.
Appreciate the praise! It's a pretty rough story to sit with when it's all said and done, but there has to be something to the tragedy of it all since so many people have been really engaged by the journey.
He should do a part 2 where he's another survivor that happens to come across this place

The actual chills I got when someone called out to him on day 51. This is my first time watching one of your videos, and your storytelling got you an easy sub.
That was an incredibly big moment for the story as a whole, so I think chills are certainly warranted. :P

Those really are my favorite types of games. Rimworld, Kenshi, Project Zomboid, etc. all games that give you just enough structure to let your imagination craft a personalized story that keeps you coming back for me.

This is one of the most entertaining videos I've seen. And I don't mean it like it's funny. It has character in it, see and watch the struggles that Jamie has. See how it affects him, changes him. I love it and will be rewatching it for a long while yet.
Bro you almost made me cry after watching this. Idk theres just something about watching a character in this game grow for 4 real life hours of gameplay and then you have that beautiful story telling. This reminds me of my old zomboid character that I named Carl Grimes after carl from twd, I survived for 124 days and a few hours before I was bitten in the neck from a silly slip up mistake. I was really sad about and so were my friends because we were playing together with realistic stuff like perma death and stuff, but I decided to live life amazingly after I was bitten. I had nothing to loose so I helped my friends clear out many buildings and made risky supply runs for them as I slowly died from the sickness and then I finally decided to end it all in my bedroom in our base. Before hand I told my friends to dig me a grave and bury me after I died and carry on. They still play while im just not there with them.
That's one of the greatest things that can come from games such as PZ, is stories that stick with you far longer than any pre-scripted events. The attachment you can get to a character and their struggle is pretty impressive once you open up to it and it makes the overall theme of Zomboid that much more impactful when they ultimately meet their demise.

I’m in awe that you were able to give this character actual growth and development. In a game like this where solo (for the most part) rp is so hard to pull off you handle it expertly.
It certainly wasn't the easiest thing in the world, but I do think it's a bit more natural than most people assume. Once you really buy into the character you're controlling, a lot of the "story" kinda writes itself and you're just left interpreting the medium and the few logistically problems you have to face there. But, thank you for the kind comment and praise, and glad you enjoyed the story. :)
The editing of actions in time with musical beats was really appreciated in such a long project. If nobody else has complimented you about it yet, I'm delighted to do so. Even if they have, you deserve all that much more praise.
That particular praise has been given a handful of times, but that doesn't make it any less special whenever it is appreciated! It feels like a small thing, but a lot of the really tedious editing details tend to pay off in the end, so thank you for being a testament to that. :)
This has me absolutely shaking in my clothes with how tense and realistically it is written after had been played. Love it.

I always tell people they're allowed to make whatever ending they want in their head, cause the video's conclusion is a rather hard pill to swallow once you've grown attached.

And then Jamie got bit right on the hand, possibly in the same spot Devon got it
There's a lot of fun "patterns" or parallels throughout the series, something that a commentor pointed out to me was that the two times Jamie ever got injured was on the same hand. First when fleeing West Point, and then second being the bite that ended his run.

With how much we all wish hoped for a good ending, this is why Project Zombiod starts of with "This is how you died". Somethings don't want to be, no matter how bad we wish they would. I had seen some comments about this making them cry, and even with the heads up it brough a lump to my throught and a tear to almost breach my eye. May Devan and Jamie both be free from the zombiod hellscape.
That's what I try and remind myself and the audience of throughout any series, is this is the story of how they died. We all know how it's going to end, we just don't know the specifics.
Still, glad that Jamie's ending had the desired impact and it stirred you to write this lovely comment. Always makes me happy to hear people feeling something because of my work. Thank you. :)

There's a few lines in the series that were difficult to record, and Jamie's final journal entry basically was an emotional minefield that I had to get through. Felt like saying goodbye to a friend.

davins was just so... human im cant express it in words but he just feels.. real. he just sounds like a normal person who had no idea what was happending arround the world, just... unbelivable 😵💫
Having tried to identify why Jamie and Devon's story resonates with so many people since the video has gotten picked up, I think that's ultimately the major reason. They're just two *people* in this absolutely hellish world. Neither of them are prepared, neither of them are super heroes, they're just like anyone you'd pass on the street and not think twice about.

Well now that I've finishhed I've gotta say, this was incredible ! Jamies story was so gripping, but your narration and voice acting really broughht this over the edge. Even the synced fighhting snd bats of the music, amazing. This truly deserves more attention. Absolutely subbed and can't wait to see what you come up withh in the future !

It always ends with a single grab at the wrong time. Wonderful story. Heart dropped at the mention of a scratch, and I was teary eyed the rest of the way.
That does tend to be the end for most survivors, though thankfully it does give you time to "say goodbye" instead of being torn to shreds by an entire horde.

It's not often when i can admit that I cryed over a game that can be played on a potato. The writing was so perfect, It made me feel connected to the limited cast of characters. Just as a side note wouldn't it be cool is Devin was still alive and about a year after Jamie dies he goes over to knox county and claims the safehouse.

The thought of Devon being alive and eventually coming for Jamie has been tossed around a fair bit in the community, and while I'll never commit to anything, I'll also say that nothing is ever COMPLETELY off the table as long as it's plausible.

Dude this shit is QUALITY, you should do a multiplayer series next, will add extra hope, and anxiety for every near death experience, and the true feeling of loss, much like Jaime experienced with Devin, lets hope someone arrives to put the kid out of his misery one day.

I've discussed multiplayer a bit in the comments before, and I just don't think it's very compatible with this style/format of content. Mostly coming down to logistics more than anything.
I do want to find a way going forward for it to feel less "alone", so there's been a few good ideas pitched by the community that we might end up seeing. :)

@twowheeledgaming Superb Suvivors basically adds ambient human NPC survivors. It's actually really cool and I'm enjoying it. If you're trying to feel less alone in this series I recommend looking into that mod
Had this video pop up in my feed for ages and after watching your video about taking it slow and that every character in Zomboid is a person, I finally watched this ... and my god am I glad I did, this is a masterclass in writing. Bravo, you have now topped my list of favourite zomboid creators.

It's interesting to see the reactions people have to this style of content/gameplay. People either absolutely love it and can't wait for more, or they instantly disregard it as cringe and move on. A large part of making the "Slow Down" video was to see if the broader player base would appreciate getting more immersed if they gave it a try themselves.
Anyway, if you're interested, I hope the other seasons entertain you just as much as the first, and really do appreciate the comment. :)

I love that you added appropriate music and roleplay. A lot of these "I survived X number of days" things leave out the story the game and your own imagination make and instead stick to just bullet points.

Well that is certainly incredibly high praise and I appreciate the hell out of your comment. I'm not surprised when most people are caught off guard by the depth available within PZ, mostly because you really have to "buy into" the character you're controlling/following, and a lot of people either aren't interested in that or don't have the time. Overall I think that's really why Jamie's story resonates with a decent amount of people, is he's genuinely living a life and struggling with issues that others can relate to.

This is such a breath of fresh air, your storytelling is captivating and I enjoyed every minute of this journey. Like most stories with tragic endings, this kept me wanting the happy ending, even though I knew, it just wasn’t how these things end up.
Happy you enjoyed it! There is the endless cycle of getting attached, praying despite the odds that they'll find a peaceful conclusion, and then being faced with the reality that this game doesn't often provide "happy endings". I think it all serves to help make the journey as impactful as it is, and leaves you feeling something besides apathy.

This should be made into a tv show, Project Zomboid is such a great game to role play with. I have really been enjoying it lately, and this video was AWESOME! You did a fantastic job

i hurt now. this story managed to constantly build crippling anxiety in my stomach only for it to be released painfully in the end. amazing story 10/10. sometimes i wish more storys had happy endings
It's a bit hard to have a "happy ending" in Project Zomboid, but despite Jamie's end I think his story is overall a somewhat inspiring one. Against the odds, he finally faced some of the demons in his life and learned more about himself before finally leaving.

I love when people make these fun little stories for their survivors.
My longest lasting survivor (who is still alive I just got bored of playing her) was a Lumberjack who went on a rampage across West Point after realising there was no help coming. She burned and hacked thousands clearing out the town, hot wiring a neighbour's Mustang that she always wanted, and went to fortify and live in her favourite bar, Twiggy's. Constructing a giant wall that spread across the perimeter of both the bar and the gun shop, just because she felt like a god and wanted to. She also burned out hundreds of zombies at a gas station while Barbie Girl blasted from her Mustang.
She also has a giant fleet of vehicles for every situation. Making a massive perma base is really fun.
Edit: I've just found out from this video that you can use crowbars to pop trunks on cars. Even after 200 hours of play I'm still learning something new about zomboid.
Sounds like you've certainly had your own worthwhile adventure. XD
I will let you know that the crowbar mechanic isn't actually in the base game. Comes form a mod called Common Sense, which allows you to do things such as prying open doors, or opening cans with screwdrivers, etc.

I was really impressed by how a lot of this played out.
Zomboid really is something else when you try to make a story from the random events.
You genuinely had me believing that someone would physically show up as a companion even tho there currently aren't any NPCs in the game (outside of mods ofc)
I was hooked the entire time. And his death, is all too common in this game. Incredible stuff. Top tier work. I've subbed.
I think that's the key take away from the entire project, or at least what I hoped to potentially showcase to others with Jamie's story. The game is an excellent story teller if you lean into it and focus on the survivor you control as an actual person.

seriously so well written & executed my dude, I find all too often there is just some weird cringe that I feel listening to stories from other PZ story tellers - but that is not a feeling your channel shares company with. I was 100% immersed in this story the entire way through (minus a few breaks), watching this whole thing over the course of a slow day working from home. This was so well done that I had to double comment just to attempt to show you the same level of appreciation I felt for your masterpiece here.

not finished the video yet, but must say: beyond the beautiful developing story and atmosphere you've managed to set, there's sheer patience to the things you do that make this incredibly enjoyable. Sure, you could kite hundreds of zombies easily; weave yourself across the hordes and toss one molotov and thus, maybe, clear half of West Point in a singular afternoon. That's the Zomboid player thing to do, and I doubt anyone would see this story as lesser if you'd follow this route, but you had Jamie scout, prepare and test a plan of placing campfires around a cruiser with blaring sirens and wait until a meager number of zombies were killed, and still Jamie felt overjoyed that his plan worked out...
that's the human thing to do and, again, makes this story that much better.

As strange as it is to say, it's refreshing to showcase a story that doesn't have a "happy ending". Especially in the genre of apocalypse movies and shows, it was always strange to me that more conclusions didn't end on a bitter note.

It took me a week to watch this through, as I planned to watch it just to fall asleep. The last 1h of video I could only stop when I got to the end and I couldn't believe I was shedding tears. That was so amazing!

God damn! This was a perfect video, music, action and everything else, the ending was phenomenal, and it’s wraps up project zomboid nicely, no amount of bloodshed or food can help you. One bite and that’s it. Devon was also voice acted to a tee, hats off to whoever did it. The character arch’s and developments of characters made this one hell of a 4 hours, good job man 👍

There's so much to be said about this saga, but I'll always been endlessly pleased with how well the Devon and Jamie story developed and concluded. Felt like just the right mixture of hope and companionship before the ultimate fate of zomboid kicked in.
Also, everyone is clumsily voiced by yours truly, so I'll take it as a compliment that I think you assumed Devon was someone else. :P

Each season is certainly an effort in patience, but it's always worth it once the story is concluded and the reaction from the community comes in. I never expected a series with this tone and style to get as large as it has, but I'm incredibly glad that there are others out there who enjoy this approach to the game.

This is what we need. PZ doesn't have a very in depth lore at the moment, but we can get stories from the survivors like Jamie...
I think it's honestly a big benefit that PZ has "thin" official lore. That way it leaves the door open for people to populate the world with their own stories and ideas, such as Jamie's or any other survivor.
Realistically I think the game would benefit a great deal from having more variations on their randomly placed "survivor stories", that just hint at the world being lived in and let players piece together what they've stumbled across.

I think Jamie wanted to die in the end. If he truly wanted to survive any longer, he could have severed his hand. Plenty of issues that'd come with that, but those issues pale in the face of certain death against the infection.
(If anyone's curious, there actually is a mod that lets the player severe their hand/arm if they've been bitten. "The Only Cure" I believe it's called.)
He certainly was putting himself in a situation where death was likely, but as far as the limb severing solution I think even "in universe" that's a questionable tactic.
Unless you saw off the offending limb *right there*, who knows how quickly the infection spreads, and if you're just mutilating yourself to die anyway?
Outside the game, The Only Cure mod is a fun idea but just shatters the immersion of the game since every animation looks beyond goofy at that point, so it's probably never going to be a viable option for something like this.
In the end, Jamie was broken and beaten in more ways than one and the bite simply was the straw that broke the camel's back.

You're in for a real treat if you just picked up the game. Try not to get too discouraged by the early struggles of dying and learning, because absolutely everybody who picks up this game has to fight through their first baby steps. Once you start hitting little milestones, you'll find your rhythm rather quickly.
This kinda came out of nowhere for me - never seen your channel, but it popped up on my feed and I'm so glad I clicked it! The first call with Devon was incredibly moving - much of the storytelling types of videos within Zomboid tend to just be about the character's immediate actions and how they feel. Using the sandbox as a foundation to then build new narratives upon is new to me, but it's very well done here. It's clear to see you were inspired, and that's a beautiful thing to be able to witness. Thanks for the content!

jesus christ. ive watched a LOT of these compilation videos, but this is absolutely one of the best. props to you for making me tear up over project zomboid. you told a hell of a good story and made it incredibly far with a character with objectively bad stats in a very hard game. stunning.
Well everyone has their own style, I just think the approach I landed on lends itself to highlighting the survivor that is usually passed over in PZ videos. It's really awesome how natural the story flows once you buy into your character being a human being, and I highly recommend everyone give a more narrative focus run a shot at least once.
Anyway, really am glad that you enjoyed the story and hope to bring even more in the future. :)
