Kevin is the group's beatboxer and he plays both the cello ( yes, you were right about it) and the sax. He also beatboxes while playing the cello. He put out a youtube video of himself doing both at the same time and Scott Hoying ( the lead in this song) saw it when the trio ( Scott, Mitch Grassi, Kirsten Maldonado) were looking for two new members to enter a 2011 Sing-Off competition ( which they won) and added Avi Kaplan as the bass. Avi left the group amicably and now has a solo career. Matt Sallee has been the group's bass since 2017. Pentatonix always do upgrades to whatever cover they do. I've not seen a bad one yet. Suggestions: Havana, Coffee In Bed, Be My Eyes, Dreams, When The Party's Over, Happy Now.
03:18 - 03:26 I keep think that Kevin has restarted playing his cello, but instead it's Matt who is singing his bass line and almost imitating the sound of Kevin's cello. Something easy to miss on a first watch, is that the video is black-and-white, except for small pops of gold color on some jewelry and room fixtures. This is a throwback to the movie posters, which were all black-and-white, with gold lettering for "A Star Is Born".
PENTATONIX Does NOT do covers.............they Make UPGRADES! That’s the perfect way to explain the songs they perform . I can’t take credit for that statement but I sure wish I could because I truly believe that.! We all Already know how INSANELY TALENTED they are, and they ALWAYS out do the originals. Thanks for sharing your reaction. Take care all.
Yep...Kevin is a world class cello player. Yo Yo Ma, one of the most famous cellists in the world said Kevin was the most creative cellist he knew. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I can't recommend a PTX video that is disappointing, and I've seen/heard all of their videos many times PLUS I've seen them live. Thank you for your enthusiastic reaction. I just subbed. I look forward to more.
Kevin is a concert-level cellist, and has played at Carnegie Hall. While living in China he began blending his beatboxing with the cello, and calls his creation cello-boxing. Yeah, Pentatonix is not your average a cappella group! Great reaction.
PTX does superb cover upgrades. Their Originals are outrageously excellent also. I highly recommend you watch the 2016 pop spring mini concert. It's 17 minutes long but has them performing live with three originals and one cover medley. It was filmed by mtv, I believe, so visual and audio are excellent and you can see they are just as good if not better live. Subbed for more ptx.
For a good look at how they contribute individually watch Gold. Check original artist first to appreciate how they make it theirs. Brace for Mitch slap!
Kevin's "Cello-Boxing" is how they discovered him.. He had put out a video while he was in med school (Yale) and they loved it so much that they contacted him and the rest is history! Sorry.. can't think of any song they've done.. cover or original, that isn't an upgrade or just perfection...
Being picky here, Cheryl... my information is that Kevin joined Pentatonix before entering med school. He finished pre-med at Yale, passed, and was accepted to go into med school when Scott convinced him to enter the Sing-Off instead. Aren't we lucky? We almost lost Kevin to medicine!
Kevin is cello/ boxing. Playing then cello and beatboxing. These people are so insanely talented This is beautiful They filmed it in black and white with gold highlights because lady GaGa s shallow album is black and white with gold and they wanted to,pay tribute to the original
Kevin is a classically trained cellist who has performed at Carnegie Hall He also beatboxes while playing the cello. He calls it cello-boxing. He is also Yale premed graduate don't ever underestimate what you think they can do. Just enjoy being surprised and amazed. That's what I do.!
Love the original song but PTX knocks it out of the park. Try Floor Jansen from Nightwish doing it on Bestes Zangers. You may like that too. Who thinks of putting a cello in this song? How about Kevin since he is an expert cello player haha. Catch him doing "Down". You will be impressed.

Christy Heath, Avi did not help find Matt. He had nothing to do with finding Matt. Matt auditioned, along with 40+ others. He won the job based upon his skill, experience, personality and work ethic.
@@vidsorama2 Yes, he did audition and I wasn't trying to say he "got in" on a favor or anything other than his obviously sheer talent . . . . But I read somewhere along during my initial PTX jouney that Avi found his audition or saw him sing somewhere, and gave PTX a heads up on, "Hey this guy is really good - " I didn't get the impression that he personally knew him, but I believe Avi was originally helping PTX locate someone and was keeping his eyes & ears open for someone that might help fit their bill. That comment was in NO WAY made to dish him in a bad way - he is INSANELY talented and has added a new dimension to the group that wasn't there before. . . it's all insane talent, Matt or Avi - they're both wonderfullly talented. . . . just different.
@miachel Duffy. how about a request for "New Rules" . . . again, ALL voices (Like 99% of their stuff).I just think this song shows so many of their abilities - full on lead vocals, background "bells" and "other stuff....." LOL - and of course, the BASS and Percussion. . . it's absolutely amazing what they put together!
@@cheath1aisd I understand. Thank you. Unfortunately, that false rumor started and spread that Avi was involved, but he was not. Pentatonix had hired a company to recruit people to audition for bass. 40+ people auditioned. Ben Bram knew Matt from the a cappella world and asked him to audition for a band. At first, he did not tell Matt for which band he was auditioning. Later Matt was told. When he showed up at Scott's house for the final audition, Matt had learned all of Pentatonix songs. There are lots of interviews and articles where Matt and Pentatonix members explained how he became part of the band. Avi was not involved but the rumor keeps going.
Okay, so you had to go and mention cellos....I HIGHLY recommend Thunderstruck by AC/DC played by 2 Cellos. Don't be fooled by the beginning of the video. It's nuts! Oh, and nice mayo!
The only songs Pentatonix doesn't do well are the ones they don't do at all. I know a few songs I'd love them to -cover- upgrade, that they've never even heard of, but I've never seen an official PTX release that wasn't gorgeous.
I’ve never seen a video from Pentatonix that wasn’t exceptional.
Me either ❤
I think you’ll love their “Imagine”. “Havana” too. They never disappoint.

Recommend their cover of Say Something.

No exceptions! How about HAVANA? Be well, Duke
Thanks duke and will do mate!! 😄
you might want to check out PTX's cover of Take On Me.
You should check out there cover of Problem. But any PTX is amazing.
New subscriber, here! I love your PTX reactions! Can you make a playlist specifically for your PTX reactions? It makes it easier to find them. :)
Yes I’ll try and get that done very soon thanks so much Jennifer!!! 😁
They upgraded this.
Might not be an upgrade like they usually do but it was really close to the original.

You got it my friend!!! 😁
Great reaction!!!!??
Oh there are some other good strings covers they do.
Imagine dragons Radioactive, Over the River, and Papaoutai w Lindsey Stirling
Say something
i'll be disappointed if the mayo on your couch ever leaves. ;-]
Reacting to PTX? Subscribing!
Love your reactions, but what's up with the jar of Mayo on the couch ?
What's up with the Hellman's mayonnaise?
Since when are instruments included with a cappella?

Ummm... Why is there a jar of mayo on the couch behind you?! 😅
Why why why is there a mayonnaise jar behind his head?
To answer your question, nope. There isn't any song they do that isn't excellent. lol.
nope...
In a word, NO!
