    Ive got an 86 on order but im starting to lean toward the BRZ. Ive never owned a toyota and prefer subarus more niche place in the enthusiast arena compared to toyota being more of a mundane/commuter 1st company. Thanks for the info.. perhaps i’ll just see which arrives first and go with that lol

      Do you plan to modify it? I’d make your decision based around that.

      Probably lower it a bit (depending on my drivewy incline) and an exhaust. Eventually brembos also.

      Curious - how should mod plans factor into the decision between Toyota/Subaru?

    • @Rob165x

      @@ChrisONeillUSA Some brakes don't fit as good on the Subaru rear because of the multi-link design compared to the Toyota's tried design. Also dampers are softer on the Subaru rear, stiff on the front, while the Toyota are opposite, combined with a more aggresive swaybar on the Toyota, it likes to oversteer more. Subaru suspension is more balanced and easier on bumps. I also heard from one channel that the Toyota throttle mapping is more aggresive (only confirmed by Everyday Driver). Other than those 2 things and front grill design, I think they are identical. Honestly though the Toyota look and logos does look cleaner, along with the black rims and the duckbill. And the GR brandings are pretty sick. I actually like the BRZ front end, to me it's more interesting. How balanced the steering and suspension feel for the street. (Not that I don't drift it often.) Psst...the Subaru fog lights don't fit the GR 😋)

    Funny you said the clutch was harder to use at low speeds. As my first manual I had a long learning period. You really have to be very smooth in the transition, especially to get a perfect 2nd gear while throttling into gas (usually needs at least a feather amount while it catches as first builds and drops very quickly kinda slamming into the bite). But I find it interesting that you said the GR bite point is near the floor, because I have a 22 BRZ and I feel it's too high. The height of the bite point actually makes me drop it a little faster than I usually intend to, it's like it takes focus to drive it smoothly because you have more leverage near the floor. Though I can see that decision was maybe made to engage the gears quicker. The only reason I wish this car had rev matching is for a passanger 😅 it does take some mindfulness to smooth those shifts. I got rid of the stock clutch spring, but now I wonder if that was a mistake, simply because it's called an "assist" spring, as in, it tells you exactly where the clutch is every time and helps pull you out of it, but it was a very aggresive spring when it hit the bite. The MTEC feels good, but the OEM is softer for traffic when holding it down. /rantover

      I admire your ability to convey clutch behavior in writing! My passenger HATED riding in this. I'm probably not the expert to consult here - I was just reviewing the car after driving a media loaner for a week. I defer to the true BRZ/86/S2K/Miata/124/Small sports car enthusiasts when it comes to the finer points of manual transmission behavior!

      I felt the same way about my 22 BRZ, tried a possibly too light of a spring which reversed the characteristics for me with traffic vs at speed. Even the NA Miata wasn't so touchy with clutch transition, maybe the rev hang has something to do with it?

    • @Rob165x
      @Rob165x 2 роки тому

      @@crazykidjumps I think the car is tuned to encourage very sporty driving, as in, make gear changes with intention and confidence and gently pedal dance instead of treating the clutch with too much care. Don't be afraid to ondulate the clutch drop with a little bit of gas as you switch to slow down the rpm drop and engage the gear smoother. Because the gears are so close together, the bite point so small, and the gas is so sensitive, feathering the throttle sometimes helps to engage the next gear because remember that while the clutch is biting it's trying to meet the correct RPM, wearing the clutch a little is no big deal if helps you learn to get good at it. Clutches are tough, and it takes some work to overheat them. My brother never changed the one on his scion tc. Then again...as I said these cars are tuned to be very sporty and can throttle up quiet fast lol. 😅

    Fantasic car, just curious have you tried to use a bore inspection camera inside the oil drain plug to check for excessive RTV or check the oil pick up tube for RTV debris?

      Thanks for checking out the video. I have definitely not done this as this car was just lent to me by Toyota for a review! I'm aware of the issues these have been having though and they don't sound like fun.

      @Rob165x 2 роки тому

      @@ChrisONeillUSA It's probably an issue, but I think its blown out of proportion. The oil pickup was made in a cage form so that oil can flow along the walls too. If the car was going to lose oil pressure, I think it would say so.
