Finding your Art Style

  • Edit:
I think something that I miss in this video, and maybe the largest point is: do a lot of work.
More than anything, the best way to find yourself and understanding where you want to go, and where you went wrong, is by doing a lot of work.
If you spend a lot of time overthinking where to go with your art, it might end up disappointing or frustrating when it doesn't match your accumulated knowledge through experience.
How do you get an art style? Patience.
Don't be so hard on yourself that you see every failure as a flaw in yourself. Allow yourself the room to fail and grow, and do a lot of work.
    --
My thoughts on finding an art style, where I talk more about the things I went through that I don't see talked about a lot.

I still think that's what's meant to happen as you're learning it, because thats what I do to and I feel like to organically develop you can look at your inspirations and take parts from them, eventually you'll keep parts you like and start merging and experimenting with them as your skills develop generally. I guess if you want to try and draw away from this, you may have a wonderful visual library of art now, but not a big enough one of real life. One thing I've heard from art uni tutors is actually, keeping looking and the real world and building up a visual library of it is key. Try building up a reference of real life observational drawings of people, animals, objects, landscapes etc. Then often when I'm drawing, I can reference of my own work instead, pick out what I like about the face of anything else, and exaggerate, or experiment with it. On a side note, drawing people like this (when especially focusing on how the face comes together) can also help against same face syndrome.

I tried letting my art style develop naturally for years. But I was so absolutely unsatisfied with how it was evolving that I forced myself to change it and kind of crammed in the aesthetics and elements that I considered to be "ideal" for me, and practiced them. I went from drawing a more western comics-inspired style with realistic anatomy to more of a zany 90s-cartoon style, and I'm much more satisfied with my work now.

This video spoke to me and I don’t even draw. I’m a music producer and everything you say apply to my relationship with music. I have also changed my style several times trying to fit in and impress certain groups of people that I’ve probably made up in my head. And every time the end result disappoints me because I know it’s not really me. I realized that the first songs I ever recorded are the only ones that still mean something to me, because back then I had little idea of what I was doing and I wasn’t trying to impress anyone. Maybe I should take that step back and reconsider why I started making music in the first place.

You're the first person who I've ever heard insinuate that a style doesn't need to be original and it's okay to amalgamate all of your favorite artists' styles to find yours. I completely agree. Derivatives are not bad.

    • @MattiasPilhede
      @MattiasPilhede  5 років тому +1

I think originality is overrated to a certain degree. Sometimes we get so caught up with trying to be original and unique with everything we do that nothing is good enough. At the core, if what you want to make is communicating what you want it to, it means you succeeded.

Austin Briggs said to find "style" you must learn to be good at reacting to the world around you. If you are an individual with thoughts /opinions and you interpret these things with genuineness a "style" will come naturally.

As someone who's had a lot of troubles with art style over the years and has since become more comfortable with my work, I can't express how true this is. My art didn't develop a style until I stopped drawing what other people wanted to see. At this point, I don't even consciously think of my art having any "style" as I draw. Instead, certain things are just completely natural. I couldn't imagine drawing any other way. And when times get hard with my art and I feel like I start to limit myself is when I consciously consider my style and make an effort to try something new. And yea. There are a lot of inconsistencies in my pieces. But I think since some drawing habits are so individual to me, it's still easy to recognize as mine. The less saturated colors I use, the subjects I draw are really niche and specific to me. And it's the first time I've ever felt good with my art and my style. And tbh, unless you are going into this as a profession, there's nothing wrong with a lack of strict consistency. You're a person. The way you create from day to day won't always be the same. And social media can really pressure you to maintain consistency. If you post something outside the norm, it won't do well and you'll get down on yourself. That's why I let all that go. Letting go of restrictions. Not being bound to any posting schedule, or putting out pieces that fit a certain aesthetic. I post when I want. I draw when I want. Not the same for everyone, but that's just my personal experience.

Dude, your video is exactly what people getting into art need. This is a question that peers back in art school kept asking around all the time, myself included. And even now that those times are well behind I still find that question bugging me repeatedly. It is an insecurity that I'm sure will stay there until you forget about it. Your style will never "appear" you already have it, just need to develop it.

This is something I struggle with a lot. I feel like my art style is not distinctive enough, especially my digital paintings. I tend to use various brushes and the paintings always end up looking totally different. But I do agree with you, art style is something you can't force on to yourself. It has to come naturally with practise and learning about who you are as an artist.

Interesting video, some really good advice there! Although I personally feel that escaping your own "style" is a much harder challenge than finding it - everything I paint, no matter how hard I try to do something new and different, ends up being quite similar. Some of it is due to "personal tastes", sure, but a lot of it is just random habits, tools and tricks you've picked up along the way. And some of those habits might actually be stuff that you don't want in your work, and that's one of the things you need to focus on if you want to refine your style.
Another thing that I want to note is that there is a large crossover between taste and skill, since both rely heavily on your visual library, and growing that (by drawing from real life and from existing art that you like) can be considered practice for both of those areas.

damn i’ve been hella depressed for the past 2 days because of this dilemma. i personally don’t really like my art style but it’s almost as if i can’t bring myself to create the art that i want, that i see in my head. while it’s distinguishable, it’s still something that’s not appealing to me. i see art that i like & that speaks to me & ask myself, why can’t i do something like that? & then i get depressed about it all over again. it’s a never ending, vicious cycle & i never know when it’s going to ever end. this ties in also with trying to please people, because nowadays on social media, it’s like it’s something one needs to do in order to gain followers & get likes. a lot of people might think that numbers don’t matter, but the truth is that they do. artists with a high follower count as well as a lot of interaction on their page get noticed by companies & get opportunities that small accounts don’t get. so, not only is my art not appealing to me, but it’s also unappealing to the audience that i’m trying to attract.
this was a long paragraph but i hope that what i said makes sense. and i hope that i find an art style that i like. this video was really good & it really cheered me up. so thank you for making it. ♥️

Back in September 2018, I started taking life drawing classes- and that's when I learned proper anatomy.
But it was at a cost for me. Whenever I tried to draw for fun after that, I just couldn't bring myself to create anything I loved. (This combined with the start of my renewed depression)
Being too worried about the what ifs, I missed out on art school deadlines. Art seemed to have become my enemy.
I couldn't handle it anymore, so I wanted it all gone.
I was going to toss old sketchbooks, when I came across a single page where I combined a skill I learned in art school with my old art.
For me that single page made everything finally click in my brain. I could definitely make this work.
Now I can create art without worrying to much about the what ifs. Because I can now move forward and evolve my style.
Yes, I still struggle at times, but I can now make things I'm not too stressed about.

Well, if you really enjoy drawing, keep doing it. Don't stop doing something you love doing.
And just note, I am a hobbyist, and still trying to improve myself, so take my advice with a grain of salt- If you want to improve your skill, all you need to do is study the basics, and how things look like in real life. There are a lot of books and videos on the topic. Mattias made a video about it, too.
But don't just read/watch things, you have to try it yourself. Trust me, your skill won't change within seconds after reading a book. It takes a lot work and of time to imrpove, at least... A year or so. Maybe even a few months, it depends if you draw regularly or just once in a while.
So just keep working hard, and you'll improve as you go.

  • @pieter-baspeppelenbosch1078

I think these type of videos are extremely handy for when you do non visual arts. It really shows you what may be fundamental to art, or what only belongs to drawing. I find this video extremely helpful for how i want to make my productions and even for how i want to write my academic history papers. Even with writing History papers there is an internal and an external style to it

Your art style doesn’t change it develops. You can’t change it. It’s not the way you draw cartoon people either your style is how you draw everything . When I comes to either lines, realism, trees, or literally anything.

Yess, thank you. So many people out there are really into finding their own style, but they forget that they need to actually GET there, you know?
Also something that people forget (I'm writing this early in the video so idk if you bring this up), is that when they find a style to stick with, they're most likely going to stagnate with improvement (unless they manage to keep one aspect but improve on everything else, but then what's the point if that might hold you back).
Rambling aside, thank you for talking about this. I feel like a lot of people tend to tunnel-vision on art styles. x:

What a superb video. I've never really commented how good a video is before so I believe this is my first time doing it, because just how much I like this. I was just thinking about this topic a few days back and actually came to a rather similar conclusion as you did, how style can be the method and the atmospheres of a drawing. Seeing one of my favorite youtuber came to the same conclusion really made me happy.

You know what’s really interesting? I used to only draw certain things and never did anything else. I did get better at drawing those things over time but It was hard to try anything new. It was not until I went into my freshmen year this year in high school that I started becoming more open to different things. I was in art 3-4. I started trying to paint super abstract and also tried multiple different materials and ways of using different paints and pencils. I did collages and even started spray paint art outside of school (just started). And when I drew one of thing things I used to only draw, my style was on point. I had not drawn much of what I used too up to that point and it was really cool. I drew better just by doing different things without drawing the thing directly.

Easily the best video I've seen on style and development. You touched on all the best points, particularly to not worry about style, that it develops naturally, that you don't need just 1, and that style doesn't equal skill.
There are exceptions to pretty much everything, but I would argue that for most artists, developing their skill at drawing is much more important than trying to force a style. A lot of artists with really distinct styles and voices developed them without setting out to specifically have a unique look. Skill and style are 2 tools we artists use for a common goal, to communicate something to the viewer. I would even argue that focusing on what you want to communicate or explore with your art is probably a better way to develop your style than worrying about style just to manufacture your own identity. My favorite artist, Yoshitaka Amano, has a very distinct style and artistic voice, which he developed because he started out as an animator, and wanted to make illustrations that would be impossible to replicate with traditional hand-drawn 2d animation.

The general consensus of style on youtube animation and paint and drawing is cute twink with rainbow colors or something to that effect which I think creates a stigma of if you're not doing this then you're somehow doing something wrong, it's not an outright attack but it's the feeling that something is off and I think a lot of it comes from a lack of time or patience to create a fully rendered artwork, [this may just be a young adult style], or maybe the disinterest in wanting something, not ohotorealistic but realism. Baroque maybe, I have this friend whondiesnt understand nor want to understand art beyond if it technically looks like a photo that is real art. And subsequently will not spend for than a 30 minutes on a sketch.

I started drawing a year ago and never once did I worry about finding my art style. I just focused on studying the foundations of figure drawing so that I could eventually draw simple figures in any pose from imagination, I focused on anatomy, proportion, form and gesture the most, and when I studied references and other peoples art I was like “i like the way this arm looks compared to the proportion of the average ribcage size and how long the legs are when the thigh gap and iliac crest of the pelvis stretch out this far” and eventually I took things and features I liked from atleast 20 different artist and incorporate them into “my own” style, and I still study these foundations and search insta and what not to make my style stay but improve as a semi-realistic style while still being believable to any non-artist that look at my art. Yea I just wanted to say that, while you study the foundations, know realistic anatomy and proportions than change proportions/anatomy to what you think personally LOOKS better and that will eventually make your own style
