It's a wonderful thing when you have a muse/model like Merissa. She's beautiful, has a great attitude and understands the goal--and that's EVERYTHING and process, I had friends like her who'd eagerly engage in my experimentations of lighting and concept. It is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find anyone who'll actually show up.
Thanks Daniel, learning a lot by watching your videos. In my early 60's and just getting into flash photography. I love your style, humor and interaction with Marisa!
And that's why a sturdy tripod is essential lol. Thanks Daniel and Marisa. Always fun and informative. I still have a couple of those 70's books hanging around myself.
great stuff i love the shots of marissa emerging from the gloom - one question in my min when you mention about clam shell lighting using either reflector or another light below the face, how does that compare to "on axis fill" approach and when would you use either as a technique ? many thanks!
Thank you ! You hit the nail right on the head when you said use a light set up that looks right. There is no set formula that has mathematical precision with exact angles of light. Photography is an art not a science.
Loop Lighting, Rim Lighting, Silhouette Lighting, Edge Lighting with two strip boxes on either sides, divine lighting would be more advanced - top-down lighting which just touches shoulders and head. would would lovely if you added using feathered lighting approach as well . good sort video
Wasn't the "Rembrandt lighting" shown here really loop lighting, as we could see the shadow of the tip of Marissa's nose? Afaik in Rembrandt the light is a little further back, so the shadow of the nose gets long enough to reach to the edge of the face.
I heard a comment that the height of the lighting correlates to the rising and setting of the sun. Could that be a sensible way we usually visualize lighting?
Even the Broad lighting looked good on Marisa, I really do not think she has a bad side. LOL I use what ever complements the subjects face. They could have a fat or slim face and so on.
Can you please please recreate the Queen II album cover with just Marisa? For some reason that’s what my brain thought the thumbnail of this video was indicating
Marisa doesn't have a bad side

I love such videos made by Daniel, they are straight to the point and no "rocket science"
Simple and straight to the point. Love it! And that broad light was absolutely beautiful. It even looked painterly.
Love how clear and concise this educational content is!
Marisa is such fun
Thanks for running through the explanations. I loved the broad lighting (best)
I think the broadlight shot of Marissa is stunning.
One of the best and least blithering of this type of video that I've seen; nice.
That's unfair Marisa is very beautiful from every side and angles.

Those were interesting. Thank you, Daniel! And, Marisa... Your "bad side" isn't too terrible for us to bear. :)
Ya have to know the rules, to be able to break the rules.
Also, Marisa doesn't have a 'bad side'.

What is the dimension of that beauty dish ? How many cm ?
I heard a comment that the height of the lighting correlates to the rising and setting of the sun. Could that be a sensible way we usually visualize lighting?
Thank for helping me to run my business 🙏🙏🙏🙏
There is also Paramount lighting for another video
Same as butterfly?
Even the Broad lighting looked good on Marisa, I really do not think she has a bad side. LOL I use what ever complements the subjects face. They could have a fat or slim face and so on.
As much as I love Marisa, how about lighting for male portraits?
Laughed so hard after the first 10 seconds! :DD Love you guys, thank you for the useful educational video again!
just to throw in a Halloween special, you could also include under lighting as well ;-)
I think of that as "swimming pool" lighting in a higher key environment.
I think you shot 5 pictures and they are better than anything I've done 😔

Did you say Rrmbrrrrnt?
And there's me thinking broad lighting is for "Broads" 😂😂
