My dad (im 15) Has a sad addiction to heroine. I love him with all of my heart too. Let me tell you right now man, that it takes a sad weak mind to do drugs. It aborts your family, friends, AND yourself. However though, It does NOT mean you are a bad person. My father happens to be my hero, a great artist too, even though he made those mistakes of drugs. He is now in rehab and being released Sunday. Sorry for the troubles. Just thought i would share with you... Peace.
henry didn't condemn anybody for doing drugs he's just stating the facts that drugs and alcohol are bad for you which is true he's just advising you not to not telling you not to.
Henry is 100% right about drugs and alcohol. The human mind itself produces endorphins which can get you high as a kite, you just gotta know how to unlock them. Some people get a "runner's high". Some people get an "adrenaline rush". Some people can get high off or ART, that's what I do. Not looking at art, but making it. If you can figure out what your medium is, you're set! I'm a writer. I once stayed up for 2 days strait writing a book because the writing experience was getting me so pumped.
the reason henry rollins doesn't need drugs is that he just has no impulse control. there's a video of him chewing out two of his 11 year old fans. the reason people a lot of people drink is so that they can kind of feel like doing whatever occurs to them without being worried about regret, or whatever. he obviously doesn't have that issue
Your a lonely kid in school, you finally get " friends " , the kind that like to party , you hate the taste of piss beer but the chemistry in it makes you wanna bear another.....your fake friends are gone but the addiction remains like your worst enemy.
"Lets face it, drugs make your feel...better. And as long as people want to feel better, somebody is going to show up with them..." Lemmy. When are we going to realize the drug problem in the world is not drugs...its people and their experience?
That line from Lemmy, and what you added at the end, is spot on. We use substances to escape, but so few are asking why are so many people looking to escape, and what are we trying to escape from? Widespread substance use is an indictment of our entire society and culture. It’s so much easier to demonize people that fall down than to take a cold, hard look at a world that basically pushes people to the ground.
Creativity comes from personality. Not drugs. That type of personality often seek drugs, but it's not the drugs that create. If you gave the worlds dullest accountant a shitload of xtc/LSD/heroine/whatever he still wouldnt be able to make great art. That talent is already there in the person. Drugs don't make art, people do.
in that case i'll agree to an extent, i'm 17 and i've had plenty of experiences with a wide array of psychedelics, and in my opinion they're great, but shouldn't be given as much credit as they usually are given. I will say that it's good i did them simply for the purpose of depleting some of that wanderlust regarding drugs as an adolescent, but after hurting my brain i've come to realize that the most important things i got from the drugs were obtainable naturally. Now i write better music
this is really cool but also really applies to the concept of "drugs etc" in north american culture. which is very juvenile and into the excess. alot of the authors, artist and musicians who inspire rollins used these "drugs" and alcohol to get to that exact point - which has benefited from and has gained such a perspective
I know that I've seen Rollins do heavy drugs back in 1985 or so. I think I sold him some. Not a joke. There are many things I admire about his performances. But, you gotta own it.
Rollins once said that if he made it, he'd be "rolling down the street, smoking the Kind..." He also did a whole podcast on his LSD experiences. Enter, one roont Maserati, by these definitions.
And he lied. I know for a FACT he tripped on LSD and mushrooms for years while in Black Flag. I know dudes who sold it to him every time Flag came to town in Seattle, Portland, Detroit, and SF.
Thank you for getting back to debating with some courtesy and politeness. Anyway I have played and written music and have known a lot of musicians. There's no doubt that drugs make you see things in a different light. The "Doors of Perception" if you will.
Love Henry, but also have many experiences on drugs I've loved. And I'm no alcoholic/junkie/stoner/deadbeat/speed freak/crack head/smack head/pill head. As Furnacefire says below, it's not the substance that's bad.
Thanks lol. I don't really have time for MMOs, Ive got GW2 but the game feels kind of aimless once you get the level cap. Used to play wow and enjoyed it, but I hate paying subs for things, but I do miss that game. Playing Chivalry at the minute, hopefully get some footage up before long.
As much as I like Henry and as much as I hate the destruction that so often is directly related to let's say, intoxication or addiction some of the very best experiences of my life have been while on drugs and alcohol and I wouldn't trade them off for an extra 10 wheelchair, colostomy bag years.

He would probably would still have been a musician, but he would not have been the GREAT innovator and craftsman of mind bending soundscapes that he was. The drugs did that. There's no doubt. He took that shit for a reason. Take the drugs away and he's likely just another decent guitar player in an average band. Even painters, and sculptors took drugs. It isn't limited to musicians.
@Radz117 I have been on the Henry train since the mid/late 80's and never any mention of drugs other than an attempt at weed which made him sleepy. I am quite sure that if he did he would have talked about it to no end.
@SCROGY I contend that Hendrix became great and innovative in spite of LSD, not because of it and that he would have achieved more with his life and almost certainly lived a longer life if he had stayed away from alcohol and other mind altering drugs. If you believe that LSD for a musician is similar to steroids or other performance enhancing drugs for an athlete, then how do you explain that for every musical success that uses LSD there are many multiples of successful musicians not using LSD?
@Radz117 Henry Rollin's reportedly smoked weed once or twice with Greg Ginn and drank once but didn't like it. However, he did drink a lot of coffee during the Black Flag days, hence the song "Black Coffee".
"You don't put sugar in your gas tank" - well some might ridicule Rollins over his tattoos with a similar analogy. If you have a classic car you don't cover it with stickers.
Sounds like someone is a little butt hurt over what Hank said! Go tell that to him personally. Make sure to record it. You might just make a new friend, you never know
I like Rollins for the powerful impact he had on music, and he has a lot of fascinating and hilarious stories to tell. But on the subject of "drugs" (a really meaningless word when you think about it), he's always come off as a sanctimonious hypocrite. It's not that he indulged in acid a few times (at the bidding of Chuck Dukowski) in the early 80's; it's more that the man basically lived on caffeine for decades. News flash Henry: caffeine's a drug.
I'd say the real issue isn't the substance per se. It's the habit. You have a good point at Henry being a hypocrite if he wasn't able to quit when necessary.
Dude don’t compare coffee to cocaine. Such a disingenuous argument, im pretty sure If Henry had to get surgery he wouldn’t mind being on drugs for the pain.
@darkjohnny23 However, Rollins innocently admits to one instance of being curious about weed. He said in an interview once:- "I tried pot once. In 1987. I got stoned with our bass player. He said, 'Here, why don't you try this.' OK. I tried it. Thought it sucked."
it is an analogy. I'm sure henry rollins eats literal sugar himself. hes talking about this that are damaging. pretty powerful way to put assuming you can wrap your wittle head around it.
@TheThetechnician If somebody wants to abstain from drugs, I have no problem from that. If they want to mock and berate drug users because they are stupid enough to judge something they have NEVER bothered to experience for themselves or any other reason, that I will not accept. How is me being 27 relevant? Even if I were to stop all drug use today the lasting expansion in perspective/consciousness will always be worth it.
@SCROGY Drugs did help technology, or at least for Steve Jobs, it did. He dropped out of college and started taking LSD. He's quoted as saying, "Doing LSD was one of the two or three most important things I have done in my life." Plus, Francis Crick discovered the DNA helix while on LSD. Not trying to debate or say anyone's wrong. Just throwing out a few facts. :)

but LSD allows you to use areas of your brain you usually do not use and it also heightens your emotions which give you more personality which in returns give you more creativity.

depends, they can inspire, and they can kill. and they can completly take away all your inspirations and replace it with addiction...
i probably should have added that while i have experimented with most i rarely take any these days !
