That's one great project! As someone that spends his free time restoring old tractors, I have to say I'm quite jealous and hope to do something like this too once.
I’m in a similar position as you. I restore old airplanes for fun and I am equally as jealous that he’s building a Maus and that you work on old tractors. People are amazing. Cheers!
Dream big brother. You’ll get there I bet
I'm in a similar position as well, me and my dad collect, work on, and sell vintage semi trucks as a hobby and I've been planning to build a tank but using like an old tractor or something of that nature.
Old tractors are very fun to work on my grandpa bought one when i was 15 and i helped him take it apart so he could get the parts repainted
For your IRL Maus build, since you already got bits from a junkyard, maybe see if you could get car shock absorbers and hook that up to the bogeys
I only remember in one episode? Did he make more?
Shock absorbers are quite large and often times worn out in junkyards but good idea
@@blueyoshi1013 if they are worn out you can make a Franken part from many parts
@@dannymiller3315 true true
Too big. Honestly possibly get some trampoline springs and put 2-3 on a arm and it would probably be cheaper and easier to fix and replace than a shock out of a car.
I have a solution for your steering and drive train! Here in Georgia we get a lot of rain making it just mud soaked where me and my dad hunt. So I made a bare chasis tank out of an old zero turn mower and tube steel. The Hydraulic steering is very easy to adapt to where you want it placed. The engines are typically very powerful. Considering most of the mowers are a 1,000lbs and we can pull another 400lb quad behind it on a trailer. The suspension I just took old leaf springs from fleet vehicles at junk yards so they were identical. If there is anything I can tell you, send pictures of, or whatever I can on the technical side to help. Please do not hesitate to ask. I would absolutely love to see the maus be successful! Good luck to you!!
Dude I have literally always wanted to do something like this
There are some heftier diesel powered zero-turn options as well
I say buy harbor freight engine and hook it up to a hydraulic pump. Probably cheaper and more useful than buying a zero turn. Even used they’re pricey, but if he builds the hydraulic system himself he can learn a new skill
@@bruhsoundeffect8455 the problem with building a hydraulic steering system from scratch is parts and strength. I tried it. I just found a mower being parted out and salvaged the steering pumps and engine. Cost me $300
@@SomeDudeTanking mine is a gas burner and does well but with the weight he's going for a diesel would work wonders. Just depending on what he can find that's cheap and reliable (if he goes this route)

When going with the diesel, keep in mind that you need at least two clutches and that's if you're fine with having only one gear! Also you have to deal with the exhaust, heat and controls.
But yeah, a proper electric motor can set you back a few thousand bucks ...
But keep scrap yards in mind! I found a very beefy motor in a electric lawn mower once.
Wouldn't 3 clutches be better. One operated by a foot allowing for connection to a manual gear box and the other two controlled by the tiller/steering wheel
@@spencervalek2173 Sure, that's a common setup where you could include a gearbox as well! But since cost was a concern ...
(also just to cover that point: you can can use the steering clutches for a full disconnect, if you have only one gear.)
Unless he goes for a Diesel-Hydraulic system, then he may not need any clutches, as the pump could be rigged with tank to tank piping so that there is not to much load on the engine but the oil in the pump dosn't overheat and cause cavitation (if that is even possible with oil pumps).
Controls for the engine would be fairly easy, as you could just run the thing with a throttle lever, and if he dosn't use an engine with an electric start there aren't even electric systems to take care of.
Drive controls and the tank loop would also be quite easy to hook up.
Also a hydraulic system would keep spinning stuff like a driveshaft, chains or belts away from the driver, only four Hydraulic hoses would have to go to the drive sprocket.
@@thoughtfox2409 Very cool idea! Though I can't say at what total price he would end up.
@@pugnate666 As he gets all his stuff from a scrapyard, maybe he could just search for old tractor implements wich use hydraulic motors (there are a few, but most use the PTO), and for the pump and maybe even engine (depending on how big and heavy he wants to build the Maus) search for a small excavator, skidsteer or wheel loader. Those Pumps certainly have enough power to get his Maus moving, and maybe he could even borrow ideas for the suspension, although i don't know if excavators even have a suspension. The controls he can certainly get from an old tractor with a front end loader, and from some old machinery he can also get hoses. That should be a lot cheaper than buying new! And since his Maus is nothing more than a big toy (and not a piece of machinery that has to earn money), reliability probably isn't that high a priority.
On the Mingles with Jingles comparison I feel like this series will resemble his Project Mancave a bit more, as the Maus build comes together. Keep up the good work Cone!
Can't wait to hear about your Mediterranean stories from the Navy 25 years ago, cousin Jingles 😃
I like this type of video as its pretty laid back and chill almost like a stream but it isn't live so yea adding little things like what happened in ur week or small history facts would be interesting too
If the cost to do so isn't prohibitive, you could try an electric transmission to simplify the drivetrain. Put a diesel powered generator in it, and 1 motor for each track.
It would be cheaper to get an old mower hydrostatic transmission
Question : would you drive your maus to McDonald or any other fastfood restaurant drive thru after its done?
Definitely, since maus needs cheese...

The hydrostatic transmission from a zero turn lawnmower is probably your best bet for a transmission. If you find an old zero turn lawnmower for sale or at a scrap yard, you may just want to use the engine from it as well. As for the 3d printer, Zytel filament by Dupont may be strong enough, but your ender 3 will need an all metal hot end and maybe some other upgrades to print with it. Sounds like a cool project for sure.
Q&A: what initially got you into military history and specifically what got you into tanks?
Hi Arc, I'm a freelance model designer for 3D printing, and let me just give you this piece of advice: do not bother spending money on trying to 3D print the suspension. It's definitely not strong enough in plastic nor resin, the hull is just too heavy. Maybe, possibly metal, but even then I stress MAYBE. It will depend a lot on the material properties in question, and using 3D printing services to get metal parts done is very, very expensive. It's still an option though, if you feel like going down that particular rabbit hole.
Been following you for some months now, I really enjoy your content!
Looking maus suspension setup its pretty simple. You essentially have beam of heavy wall rectangle tube for two two pivoting arms, each arm has joint in the end and other end has Volute spring that balances two road wheel and this is then mirrored on other side of the same track. Get axle and 4 bearings on jointed side, connect two of the bearings on each side of the arm and axle works as joint pin and same time as axle for the road wheel. In other end axle can be welded in place and bearings placed on road wheel. its pretty hefty number of bearings needed, but this way you get close as possible maus suspension setup. Each set then can be bolted off and maintained when need arises by removing beam from the frame.
The maus project sounds cool. It's your project and do what you want don't let people tell you what you have to do. I feel that; You could do what it takes to get it to work and move. Then work at making it more accurate. Once it works you can take to car show/parades/etc and fund raise with it for improvements. Power wise with enough gearing you can rotate the earth. Diesel would be cool because it would feel more authentic, and if the smoke gets to you in the future change to electric. I was looking at a scissor lift because it's electric hydraulic will run for hours and can handle the weight. And for a used one was $2k. I'd suggest use external fuel tanks for fire safety risk, as long as it's not at the hatch. Sorry you got me thinking and excited to see what you do with it. Good luck and Have fun with it.
if you can 3d-print parts you can then investment cast aluminum parts from those. if you can find bunch of aluminium scrap at the yard by the pound it could be the cheapest way to do it.
Aluminium low-enough melt you can easily build a small smelter out of oil and leafe blower (DIY videos are abound).
The mantlet could be done that way, but I wouldn't trust home cast aluminium with anything structural.
We should go to a scrap yard and find a golf course mower get the little yanmar or Kubota out of it with the pump. Take the drive motors out find a zero turn and take the valve body's out of it
I don't think 3d printed parts can be strong enough but you can make very strong parts with 3d printing carbon fibre or filiments with metal powder in them i think integsa made a video about that
For motor control and stuff like that I would definitely suggest going electric instead of gasoline/diesel, unless you want to basically reengineer a tank drivetrain from scratch. Electric motors are much easier to control, and are less likely to break down
Get a hydraulic pump and use that for steering like with a zero turn. You can just use a zero turn as a guide to do it since you’re doing the same thing but with tracks and not wheels. I would say for the suspension possibly look into casting aluminum parts, I think that’d be pretty neat and you’d pretty much would only need a mill to just face and bore the holes for a rod that could be welded to the chassis to go through. That’s just an idea so you wouldn’t have to buy a bunch of aluminum square stock and if you design it right should be as strong and uses less material. I have the idea in my head and really once you get a buck(basically the shape of the part you want to make that you use to make the sand mold) it’s easily repeated but it would take a good bit to make all those parts.
Try to have a plushie for every crew member in the tank, maybe give them German names too, "Here we have Hans the French commander of a French tank who we have 'convinced' to be a Maus Gunner, we also have their cousin, Ketz, another French commander 'convinced' into being a Maus Driver."
This will make mondays more enjoyable
If you're going to 3d print parts, you might want to look into the material strength analysis and annealing process over on the "C&C Kitchen" channel.
Also consider getting a digital kiln and looking into either lost PLA casting or polymer bound sintering filament. You can get metal end parts from a 3d printer with those methods.
I’m somewhat curious if you’ll actually make the guns shoot, or even one of them, for the Machinegun you could possibly use a Cheapo Airsoft gun you’ve modified but what about the main gun?

You can use the printed bogies to create casting masters, those would definitely be strong enough.
You are right about 3D printed parts. There are more expensive printers that can make parts strong enough for mechanical application. However parts printed by an ender 3 will be good for decorations but not for repeated loading.
3D Print parts in thin walls and use that for building sand mold and metal casting could be an option but I'm not familiar with the details in that.
I recently made a ridable 1:3 scale replica of KV2 and its undergoing final testings. For drivetrain its best to use independent braking system, just like it was used on light tanks. For the suspension you can use torsion bars, they are much easier and cheaper to produce. My KV2 costed me 850 USD
Yo I went to machine school too that's neat. Lol I got that Hobart too, it rips
3d printers actually qualify as C&C machines, the slicer outputs GCode, and the firmware parses it into servo commands.
Q&A: List of tanks I would like to see: Churchill MK7, comet, challenger 2, Centurion,Leo 2a5, the luchs, chieftain,t 29, M60, and the Russian object that could "survive" a nuke
Electric motors will put out more power than a ICE engine based on the size constraints. Plus you don't need to worry about exhaust fumes and cooling, and fuel. And hydraulic drive is great, but its very bulky. And the maus used a horizontal torsion bar system for the second set of wheels. Which would be tricky to design. Better off to just let the second set of wheels not be weight bearing.
Looking forward to an Inside the Chieftain's Hatch vid on your Maus at some point in the future :D
Please do what ever you can to expand on your current channel. I love military history, Love tanks you have a very soothing way of explaining everything . You could if you are interested in expanding to War ships as there were probably more of those built than tanks...
Any way keep up the awesome work..
What would you say is your favourite Era/Country for tank design? I always liked the early British and French designs personally.
Early of ww2?
HELL YEAS IM WATCHIN ALL OF THEM
I'd get a little diesel tractor. they already have differential brakes and multiple speeds. Main challenge would be re-configuring it, but it might work.
For anyone who needs to know
Shift + middle mouse button is how you drag the camera around in sprocket.
Springs from a trampoline works great as suspension springs
Hey ConeOfArc I'd like to say keep up the great work with your Maus project! I love the cursed by design series and I was wondering if you can talk about the JagdPanzer E-100 or the E 100 to coinspire with your Maus build?
Electric motors would have more than enough torque to move it and ultimately would be a fraction of the cost of a diesel or even a gas system unless you happen to have a pile of tractor parts lying around.
Though it might not be ideal I believe possibly using an old school type 1 or 2 Vw transmission and motor could solve a lot of the drivetrain issues. Granted I can understand why that could be too expensive but for something that can be relatively small and not needing external cooling as well as having a huge aftermarket for custom parts, it could be a good way to get plenty of power for the weight. Plus it’s a Porsche tank, so there’s actually some weird accuracy
You don't need a RC remote control these days you can make a arduino Bluetooth circuit that you can control with your mobile phone for your tank
Its easyer too.
If you aim with the maus on an object and then click alt, zou will get the same object (same size). That will make the life much easier!
btw. Nice Maus
Honestly you might be well suited to buy a cheap diesel car and part it out to make it work. I found some in the UK, where I'm at, for around £550. Though I'm sure you can find something cheaper. You can use the engine, gearbox and suspension components from it to make it work. Though I'm unsure how you will make it turn. You could fiddle around with the differential I suppose? If you are going down that route please don't accidentally hurt yourself with the exhaust fumes and the heat of the engine. I wish you the best on this endeavour and I'm looking forward to seeing it!
Hey cone, I found in sprocket hover over a part you need to copy and press ALT. Saw you try to get the vent the right size (:
How about P26/40 with Turan III turret next? Let's test combined might of "minor Axis"!;)
Good luck!
Cnc machinist here, get a haas. I run and program Doosans for production and we have a haas for tool room work. Tormach is more of a hobbyist machine no real hogging on it.
Manufacturing the suspension out of steel square extrusions and round tubes (for bearing housings) welded together is probably doable. The basic shape of the bogie is a triangle, though a highly convoluted one. I think the major question is one of time investment. Do you want to cut and weld up 12 of those bogies?
Honestly I think if you use the 3d printer to create small scale versions of the suspension then it might make it easier to understand how it works before you try and put it directly onto the maus
This is cool!
Remote control would probably be easier and cheaper than making it driveable.
A receiver and some servos aren't that expensive, and the weight and internal space saved by not having a driver would more than make up for it, meaning you could get away with cheaper and lighter duty drive train components.
You definetly need to try and use electric Motors, so you dont have to mess with a transmission. Also, there is already 3D Models of the Maus Transmission and in Polycarbonate a print should be solid enough.
Forklift motors are supposed to be pretty good some people have even used em for custom evs so. Thats a decent option
Bruh. I thought my leopard 3 was good!? This is insane bro! (EDIT) I meant by my build in sprocket. I could never do what he does in the real world. That is a great Maus build in Sprocket
I think electric might be a good choice. I admit that I am biased, I was working for a company that wanted to convert an original electric Golf 2 to lithium batteries. The company bought the car when it was new for advertising and wanted to do that again. I actually didn't do anything significant on the project beside cleaning the car and removing the old batteries because buying the right batteries was tricky because of corporate reasons. Power isn't really a problem. But battery life is a bit tricky.
Electric engines are quite good for projects just because they have fewer moving parts.
My idea is that you should take a look at the drivetrain of a fork lift. They are made to have the torque to move a few tons around. A cars drivetrain would be too complicated and a lawnmower engine would be much too weak.
5:28 (upper left hand corner)
*SEVERLY UNDERPOWERED*
why yes, yes it was
I'm converting a car into a tracked vehicle, more specifically a trabant and I want to use the original engine. A two stroke two cylinder gas engine that puts out 26 hp and around 54 nm of torque. I'm not sure about the weight but it's gonna be as light as possible because that engine is quite weak. I don't like electric motors that much because for me they are boring and expensive plus the fact that I need batteries, that are heavy especially for a heavy machine, I also have to wire everything up and that's quite complicated. I would recommend you to go with a diesel engine. It has a lot of torque to move a heavy vehicle.
Q&A - What got you into tanks and any other military stuff?
For 2k$ you can order a motorized tracked wheel barrow from Home Depot that can support 600 lbs it would already have the drive train you’d need, you’d just have to make your own tracks and suspension
Are you going to add the anti-air cannon and flame thrower on it? I’m sure it would look awesome. Probably hard, but awesome:)
Buying a used VMC might be a better option then the Tormach, ive heard they are a project to get them to work perfectly.
What are you going to use for a transmission on your maus
batteries for the motor for any significant run time would be uber pricey, not to mention add weight. go with small diesel.
What tank would you want do next after you are done with the Maus? Not straight after the Maus but after you have rested.
You should buy the takom model for it and build the suspension, then try and simplify it from there
I might be a little biased because I'm an electronics technician but I think original way of powering the Maus would work the best in the model too. A tiny gasoline engine powering a small electric generator that would power two electric engines, one per track. It would give you all the benefits of having electric engines which on their own shouldn't be that expensive and having gasoline powered generator would eliminate batteries which at this kind of weight to move would be extremely expensive and most importantly unreliable.
You can use electric motors from the washing machine set to eternal spinning
Thank you Daddy Cone, very cool
are you gonna put armor on it?
for example skale down the front plate to 50 mm of armor
If ya find a mini excavator in a junk shop i suggest taking its hydraulic motors
You can hit X when you have a piece selected toswitch between mirrored and single. That would have helped with placing the engine hatches.
How do you change the scale of objects though??
Maus is quite a project!
Hold shift and try the mouse wheel, does not work on some parts.
Please do the bob semple next, IM BEGGING YOU!
HarborFreight has the engines that you can setup hydraulics with.
the 3D parts might work if you use a tight infill for the print design
An engine im not sure if it was gas or diesel but that powered electric motors witch drove the maus
funny to know that some peoples start to rebuild some very old tank like the fiat 2000 of WWI and now the maus
From what I can tell... the T34M was influenced by the Panzer III that the Germans gave the Russians ( they were very impressed with it.) before the war. Since the T34 was under way the Russians decided to just produce some as an interim tank while they set up the t34M. But when Barbarossa happened, The Soviets knew they needed to drop the T34M and mass produce the T34. If the war had started a couple of years later, the Germans would have run into the T34M and some T 34s. SO what do you think? This might be a good topic for a video.
Question: do you use a cad software, what i can see from what you have made already isn't it a bit on the small side to fit everything in and last and not a question but a sugestion use a hydrolic system if you want to use what you have made already.

Where do you live and when did you start liking the FCM.36?
I have no real experience with fabrication to this extent, but I'd recommend an external fuel tank for 3 reasons. Firstly. It would ease refueling, and would also be much easier to mount. Next, freeing up interior chassis space is a very good idea. Finally, in case of a fire, an external tank would be easier to extinguish, and being able to visually watch the fuel system should help prevent issues.

Hmm maybe you could manipulate the turret like for the french tank in the stream and thus make it more angled like the maus turret was circular at the front
