Elephant Behaviours Episode 1: Trunk to Mouth (Affiliative)

- Опубліковано 24 лют 2024
- Welcome to Episode One of our Elephant Behaviours Series. We appreciate all the positive feedback from our introduction video. Thank you, we have the most incredible followers!
We would like to take this opportunity once again, to thank Elephant Voices for sharing all their research on their public platform called the Elephant Ethogram, which provides the world with all this incredible insight into elephant behaviours.
In Episode 1, we take a look at a behaviour that has been labelled “Trunk-to-Mouth”. This behaviour can be observed in six different contexts of elephant behaviours, but in this particular episode, we are concentrating on one context, which is affiliative.
Each episode serves as a compilation of examples of a specific behaviour in one specific context. Each video aims to take a slow, steady look at the behaviour to help you identify movements independently, and hopefully, in time, to piece various behaviours together to understand the context.
Use this link to view the Elephant Ethogram by Elephant Voices:

* Our elephant behaviour videos showcase various elephant behaviours through our video archives that feature a unique semi-habituated herd, called the Jabulani Herd. By making use of the information available on the Elephant Ethogram, a public platform created and shared freely by the team at Elephant Voices, we are showcasing some of the more commonly seen physical behaviours by sharing a few examples of individual behaviours in succession. All behaviours are always open to interpretation and based on numerous contributing factors which are taken into consideration.* - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
Thank you so much - what an amazing glimpse into the nature of these wondrous creatures!!! What a privilege to learn about them like this!!!!!
The Internet has downsides, but this kind of thing is just magical - huge gratitude to HERD for having the vision and the energy to produce this wonderful work...
For my part I'll be watching, liking, commenting, sharing and doing whatever I can to help raise funds for your precious work ❤🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️
Us too, we respect them so much. How wonderful for an organisation to share their research with the world for free. That is pretty special!
I couldn't agree with you more. You said everything I was thinking.❤️🐘❤️
It makes a good greeting. They can't hug, everything happens with the trunk.
Yes, so true. A bit of welcomed affection :-)
They can't give a hug or a kiss. This looks like an equivalent ❤❤❤
What a lovely notion! ❤
This is humongosly intertesting.
The narrator spoke slowly & clearly. She has a lovely speaking voice.
Reinforcing the behaviour in slow motion is much appreciated.
The more I learn about the elephants at the Herd, the more I appreciate and am fascinated by elephants.
❤❤❤
We are delighted that you are enjoying it so much, that makes us so happy to hear, and we are so very grateful for the kind feedback you have taken the time to share with us,
Its like a human hug or handshake.! 😊❤ Thank you so much, I'm enjoying watching this and barely half way through.
it's their secret language with an infinite shades of meaning, as it seems
Absolutely! We hope you enjoyed the rest of the episode. Thanks for watching!
very true.... it can be very confusing sometimes, one moment you think you understand the behaviour and then you watch it again , and pick something else up that could mean something else. It takes many many years of intense studying to 100% accurate. The team at Elephant Voices have done that and created this priceless tool for the world to enjoy, its simply wonderful.
Thank you
You're welcome
Good morning from Europe, 🇪🇺. I am a follower of the channel since some time and I thank you all for your help and beautiful work protecting these formidable animals ❤️
Good afternoon from SA! thank you for the lovely comment and being such a loyal follower, we really appreciate it.
A fascinating insight in elephants secret life, coming so close to their intimate social behaviour and communication! Thank you! ❤🐘💛🧡
Our pleasure , thank you for taking the time to watch it and provide feedback to us.
I love Elephant education 101! Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together. ❤
Thanks for watching! And for the positive feedback!
This was excellent and very informative. We see Elephants using "Trunk to Mouth" touch often and it is helpful to know all the reasons why. I really appreciated the slow motion repeats too! It's so easy to miss all these interactions, especially when there's a lot of activity going on! I shall be watching more carefully in the future to spot this! Thank You! 🙏
We are so happy to hear you enjoyed it, Jan. Thank you so much for the feedback.
I really enjoyed that episode. I'm looking forward to each and every one to come! Thank you. I love The Herd!
Thank you for the information. I love how elephants 🐘🐘💕 greeting each other, the one of the last, was so cute the smile face of Limpopo to Lundi 💞🐘 🐘
You are so welcome! It makes you see things a little clearer, doesn't it?
9:42. Ellie ‘fist bump.’ Thank you for amazing video.👍🏻👍🏻
Our pleasure! thank you for taking the time to watch it!
Very interesting. Now that you have highlighted trunk to mouth, I realise that I never took any notice.
We inadvertently miss so much don't we, especially when there's so much happening. We will all be much wiser when these fabulous episodes conclude! 😄👍🧡🐘🙏
@@janparish7895 Isn't that the truth? That realization really comes to the fore as the video is run and then shown again in slow motion. Really appreciate pointing out who's who!!😉 While I've noticed this action before, this really gives the observer the chance to "soak it in", so to speak. We're off to a rousing start in this series! Have a great week.🐘🦋🐦
@susanfeneley Hi Susan! I think this series was a wonderful idea! I've often heard Adine mention she's always learning something new about Elephants. If this lovely lady, with all her knowledge and experience, is still learning, then it's small wonder we still know so little about these amazing creatures we love so dearly. This new feature has been meticulously prepared and an awful lot of hard work has gone into the project. I'm so looking forward to future episodes and my admiration for HERD and all they do, continues to grow. I feel very blessed to have access to this knowledge!
Have a great week Susan and Take Care. 🧡🐘🧡🤗🙏
There are so many movements that you often don't take notice of, and of course if there are many elephants in a scenario, there is so much to try decipher! It is really super interesting!
Thanks for the very informative session. Looking forward to see the rest
Thanks for watching!
Good morning from the UK love your channel and thank you for everything you do for these beautiful animals and the important information you provide to the world ❤
Good morning from SA! Thank you so much, we really appreciate your kind words.
Thank you so much for these educational videos. Not only are Elephants magnificent. They have a whole complex language of their own. The more that people gain an understanding of the different types and meanings of the behaviors of Elephants within their surroundings and the herd. How they communicate socially with each other. Then may be us humans will learn to respect their unique and complex lives. And help to protect them for the future. 💖🐘
It is our pleasure, we are glad you are enjoying it so far. They truly are magnificent animals, with so many layers - and we constantly learn from them every day.
Now I understand more about why I’ve seen Adine breathe into Khanyisa’s trunk. I thought it was just allowing Khanyisa to know Adine’s scent but it’s richer than that. ❤ Thank you for lesson 1!
our pleasure, we are glad you enjoyed it!
Yes, well said.
This is great & I'm looking forward to more elephant schooling! My take on this lesson is that this oarticular behaviour is very much like a handshake or a pat on the shoulder to say gidday to a good friend 🥰🙏❤️🐘
Thank you for the feedback. Yes it does seem to be that way - they also do communicate via chemical responses when they return their own trunk back to their mouth to process the information from the Jacobson organ. We will touch on that with examples in future episodes!
@@herdelephantorphanage I'm guessing during the trunk-to-mouth exchange, the Jacobson organ also tells them things like their health (for example). Really looking foward to learning more about that fascinating part of elephant anatomy. Thank you!
Thank you, that was really interesting.
We are very happy to have that feedback, thank you, Patricia.
This is going to be such an educational and interesting series. Thanks for all the hard work to put it together and I'll be watching every episode!
We are delighted that you enjoyed episode one! Thank you for taking this journey with us.
Thank you from New Mexico
You are welcome, our pleasure, from Hoedspruit!
WE cannot thank you enough to take us on that journey to the Land of Elephants We learn and are eager to learn a little more everyday and thanks to you we feel like we are a little part of this wonderful Family that is HERD
Lots of trunkfuls to our Ellies friends and to the great Team who takes excellent care of them 🫶🐘🙋♀️🧡💛💚💝
@marie-clauderecchia4531 Lovely and thoughtful comment and I concur 💯%. Be well.🐘🫶🐦🇺🇸
Beautifully stated!! 😄👍🧡🐘🧡🙏
It is more than a pleasure - especially when it is so appreciated. Thank you for all your trunkfuls of support!

Their trunks are nature's work of art. I especially am fond of the babies learning how to use them. Khanyisa and Phabeni seem to especially like spashing their trunks in the water. Also heartwarming to see when the older ellies greet and adorn the little ones with their trunks. Enjoy the series very much.
Oh it is joyful to watch little ones figuring out why they have their trunks attached to their faces! We couldn't agree more. Glad to hear you are enjoying the series thus far. Much appreciate, Allison.
Leave it to Herd to produce videos for the world to see and learn all about these majestic animals 🐘. I just love HERD 🐘 for teaching us about them.❤️
I think trunk to mouth greetings are so sweet. You can see in this video just how much this happens. Thank you for the first video of this series. Can't wait to see the next one. ❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️
Thank you so much, Dorothy. We are very happy that you enjoyed the first of our series, Trunk-to-mouth. We hope you will enjoy future episodes to come too. Thanks for the support.

I just love Elephant Voices!! Thank you
They are phenomenal in so many ways! so do we!
WOW, thank you for sharing this with us! It's really nice to learn about Elephant behaviors, what their actions mean and why they are doing it.
We are so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for the feedback
I've seen the babies try to do this with their carers.
That was so wonderful. I look forward to many more and thank all at Herd.
We are so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the feedback, Donna!
I love these educational videos so much. Thank you for this. ❤
You are so welcome! Thank you for the feedback and taking the time to watch them too.
Goodmorning Herd and everyone. Its nearly 5.30pm here our day will be ending very soon ,hope you all have a great day. Thankyou for sharing this video, very informative and l cant wait for more. This really is a great idea to help us understand these magnificent beauties thankyou .Love to all and the 🐘
Hello Carrie, thank you so much for the positive feedback, it means a lot. Hope you are sleeping well as we type this!
I’ve noticed that they often put their trunk to their own mouth after putting it to another elephant’s mouth or face.
yes, it's so interesting, I think also about all smells they get by this kind of contact, and how they "decode" them
You are spot on! By doing this, they communicate with one another via each another's pheromones via their Jacobson organ, also known as the vomeronasal organ. It is almost like a sixth sense. A type of chemical communication. You can learn more in our blog post herd.org.za/blog/the-anatomy-of-an-elephant-the-jacobson-organ
their extremely developed senses - except the sight: is it because mud, sand and water bath (when eyes are covered and the sight limited) is so central for their wellbeing?
@@herdelephantorphanagethank you so very much for the link❣🐘❤
@@miri-818 yes very interesting.
What a brilliant idea to explain behaviours - with the best will in the world one is at times inclined to anthropomorphic solutions, because that's the obvious one to the human mind. Really looking forward to learning, thank you ❤
Thank you for the feedback. We are thrilled you enjoyed it, and we look forward to sharing future episodes with you.
I enjoyed learning so very much!
Excellent! Thank you for the feedback
I fell in love with Elephant voices after watching Secrets of the Elephants 🐘 in 2023. The most beautiful film about elephants ( Savanna ¤ Desert ¤ Forest ¤ Asia¤)
The most beautiful storytelling ❤ Look for it if you love 🐘
The examples of trunk to mouth at HERD are many. I like the slow motion and a pink fluffy Khanyisa doing whatever she wants🎉😂❤
So true - it is a must watch for all elephant lovers! Not to be missed!
Thank you Adine for inviting us into an in depth experience of elephant communication. And thank you to Elephant Voices to all of the amazing information they have provided.
Thank you for following us and for acknowledging Elephant Voices too. They are phenomenal!
@@herdelephantorphanageI have followed ever you since you rescued Khaniyisa. Thank you for teaching us and for caring for every animal with such tenderness, respect and kindness. i want to get to know them and what you share enables me to do that. I love all of the elephants and I am so excited for Phabeni to experience being loved by a whole herd.
Elephant voices is such a gift. It is an entire library of information. What a blessing!
With all the recent advances in our appreciation of these complex creatures (just think what we he learned about their sound comunication), how much does taste, texture and scent of breath is involved along with the obvious physical action of presenting one of the most sensative organs, the tip of the trunk, play in this behaviour?
That was very enjoyable,thank you.
So Glad you enjoyed it - thank you, Susy
This is so beauitful thank you fot sharing i just love this herd be blessed and stay safe cant wait to see the next vidoe 😂😅🤩😍
Thanks so much - glad you enjoyed it so much
Such amazing gentle giants. Thank you for allowing us into their world. They are fascinating!

❤THIS is an EXCELLENT Video!! Thank You for this Information!! 😃👍💯🐘🐘
A very big pleasure, thank you for the feedback - it is really appreciated.
Its so astonishing to see how much they can express with thier trunk. No wonder elephants are emotionally complex animals yet we still study about thier behavior Thank you for the information ❤🙏
They are extremely complex, there is so much to learn! We have trunkloads more to share - we hope you stay tuned!
So much elephant 🐘❤from us here in the US! Can’t wait to come back again to see these magnificent animals, hopefully 🤞 August!

I wonder if it's equivalent to our hug or hand on a shoulder. I didn't know it could be used in so many ways beyond affilliative. Very interesting.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for the donation, Bill! It means a lot!
This information about elephant trunk greetings and communication is very fascinating and well presented. Elephants are such highly intelligent and amazing animals. We can learn so much from them.
Thank you for the feedback, Wendy. They are exceptional animals indeed.
Brilliant! 👍A great start to this educational segment - congratulations! 🥳🥂👏Will be sure to share!😉🐘❤❤❤

@@herdelephantorphanage Grazie a voi 🌺❤️🌹
Love this! I always marvel at how the humans carers understand 🐘 behavior and respond to them accordingly. These educational videos will help us understand what's going on. Much thanks 🙏🐘❤️😍🥰
It takes many hours on the ground to understand them instinctively - and most of our carers have literally spent decades with them! We hope the videos help impart a bit of insight as we share them. All the core hard work is credit to Elephant Voices! Have you checked out their ethogram yet? If not go to www.elephantvoices.org/elephant-ethogram/ethogram-table/overview.html
I do find this very interesting to learn about their body language ❤
Great, thank you!

Thanks for the information. I love learning new things.
This is a beautiful greeting and informative for us whom love them so much to be able to watch videos and time with the herds with a new understanding and meaning. I can’t wait to learn more about this magnificent family and how they communicate ❤
Thank you for your eagerness to know more - it would make us so happy to have our wonderful followers feel more immersed and interpret things themselves too - when observing elephants.
This is SO great! Amazing, insightful information on the ellies!👍
Thank you very much for the wonderful feedback
Lovely animals
Good moning from the Caribbean! Trinidad.
Good morning, friend!
I wonder how this behavior evolved. (Even the human handshake has a practical origin, in addition to the simple aim of making contact.) Is trunk-to-mouth behavior also a way for elephants to check up on each other’s health and well-being through scent? Or is any other motivation aside from touch just speculation?
Thanks so much for this fascinating series! The more people understand about these magnificent animals, the more they can engage emotionally with them and feel motivated to help. Looking forward to the next installments.

My English skills is not enough for such a large package of information. But, thank you.
Thats ok, sorry about that. But we hope you enjoy all our usual videos and posts that will continue as usual. Thanks for taking the time to try watch it though. And the feedback!
Fascinating!! Thank you for doing these informational videos, I love learning about the elephants.
Our pleasure!
Thank you! so interesting. It is now more evident, by the trunk to mouth activity how the HERD members are so close with each other and feel connected with each other. I also remember in some other videos Adine showing the mouth and touching it with her hand and how relaxed the elephant was. I suppose this maybe considerate a very intimate gesture since it involves the mouth, but they all seem to enjoy it.
That's awesome! Thank you for sharing as I watch Herd all the time and was not sure of the reason they did this. Now I know.
Our pleasure, we are happy to hear that you learned something from the episode!

That is wonderful to hear - thank you for the feedback.
Episode one and I already LOVE this series! Thank you.
Excellent news! Thank you so much, Julie!
Love the pace that this Tuition Session was delivered. The Watch, Replay, Explain and Watch method, helped with the dissection, digestion and processing of the material. I actually felt as though I was attending a online university course. Thank you for the excellent presentation and delivery for novices like me. I am very interested in learning more about elephant behaviours and it is a privilege to attend these masterclasses. Please could the presenter explain, in a brief written intro or in the next video, a little bit about how they became interested in these majestic mammals, what pathway of studies did you undertake, qualifications, experience and how can a person get to work with elephants and elephant rehabilitation projects? ❤🐘♥️
Very interesting and I hope you make more videos on elephant behaviors. 🐘💖
Thank you - we definitely intend to continue for the foreseeable future or as long as our followers still enjoy it. We aim to share a new episode every two weeks 🐘💖
