COMFORT SUCKLING & SUCKLE STANCES: Episode 3 of our Elephant Behaviours Series

- Have you heard of the term “Comfort-Suckling?” Learn All About it Here!
In Episode 3 of our HERD Elephant Behaviour Series, we delve not only into the behaviour of comfort suckling, but we have included an additional behaviour that is often seen at the same time as comfort -suckling, and that is the “Suckle-Stance”.
The behaviour Comfort-Suckling can be seen in one context only, which is Calf Reassurance and protection - making it easy to identify and classify. The behaviour “Suckle-Stance” can be seen in two different contexts, namely Birth and Calf Nourishment and Weaning.
The term comfort-suckling pertains to elephant calves that are in fact suckling from a female in their herd that is not lactating, or producing milk. As the Jabulani herd is on contraception, the females are unable to reproduce and therefore do not produce milk. You can read more about that in this blog post: herd.org.za/bl...

We would like to take this opportunity once again, to thank Elephant Voices for sharing all their research on their public platform called the Elephant Ethogram, which provides the world with all this incredible insight into elephant behaviours.

* Our elephant behaviour videos showcase various elephant behaviours through our video archives that feature a unique semi-habituated herd, called the Jabulani Herd. By making use of the information available on the Elephant Ethogram, a public platform created and shared freely by the team at Elephant Voices, we are showcasing some of the more commonly seen physical behaviours by sharing a few examples of individual behaviours in succession. All behaviours are always open to interpretation and based on numerous contributing factors which are taken into consideration.*
This channel brings me such joy. It is amazing that the babies are allowed to sickle for comfort. The female elephants are so gentle, accepting and kind to the orphans. Humans could learn so much from elephants. We would be a much kinder and accepting world. They should be more protected than they are. Thank you for this wonderful video and all you and the staff do. I learned so much today.
We couldn't agree with you more. Thank you for taking the time to share such a lovely message of feedback.
Thank you for making this disabled woman happy to watch the hard work that you do and live vicariously through everyone there…
Well thank you for choosing to watch our videos - we are equally as grateful!
May God bless you & heal you , In Jesus' name , Amen . I was crushed on the job by a 177 pound semi trailer door . I use to drive a semi . Pain is terrible . You can google my name Amy Larcom . I Love Herd ❤️. Blessings to all .Amen
@@amybear2941 Oh no, that is so sad, Amy - gosh what an ordeal to go through in life. Well you still sound like you in good spirits and that is half of the win right there. Sending all our love your way from the whole team at HERD.
yes, this youtube channel is precious and the best on this platform
@@amybear2941 that’s very kind of you. ❤I’m a minister‘s daughter, so my faith is very strong. I am retired from continental airlines. I had a piece of metal slice into my foot from underneath the ticket counter and embedded in the metatarsal joint, eventually creating a neurological disorder due to mis treatment by Workmen’s Compensation doctors, they put electricity through my foot to stimulate the nerves to heal before realizing there was metal embedded in my foot, so they cooked it into the joint.😢 by the grace of God, he’s taking care of me and I’m on disability I took a small settlement because it’s a right to work state to get out from under those doctors and I’m on maintenance care now.
To see Khanyisa when she was so fragile, and then to see her grow up to support another calf in this way is moving beyond words.
It is so very special! That moment represented so much, didn't it! How far she has come. Thank you, Susan.
Elephants show more kindness than any human has ever shown me in my entire life
They are pretty incredible !
I have never met an elephant so I don’t know how one would treat me. However, I have met lots of humans and really wish I didn’t have to meet any more because humans are awful. I have always found comfort in animals…..dogs, cats and horses are my comfort animals. I would much rather spend time with my pets, than any human.
I'm so sorry but there's kind people God Bless you 🙏 ❤
I honestly hear you on that reply. Elephants are absolutely amazing in that respect as well as everything else.
Same here!!!
I have had a pure love for ellies all my life as well as furbabies
No human can love you unconditionally as a ellie or furbabies❤❤❤
This is all so sweet, and amazing. The way these elephants not only tolerate orphaned cslves but totally acept them as their own is so beautful.
The Jabulani herd are very accepting and they seem to understand. It is very special.
🌞🫶🏼🙌🏽🖖🏼
I was so moved by watching sweet young Khanyisa offer her breast to Phabeni. Thank you for this information and a walk down memory lane watching Khanyisa suckling from all her alomothers. Such a remarkable herd.
It was a very moving moment - how far she has come! We look forward to seeing her relationship blossom with Phabeni. Thank you for the nice comment.
That was absolutely beautiful with Lundi actually lifting her leg off the ground for little Phabeni. That was the first time I have ever seen an elephant do that for any baby elephant. The love these animals exude is almost too much to take in. I watch your channel and videos everyday. Thank you.
It was really awesome to see! And very unusual. Bless her. Thank you so much for watching so closely - it means the world to us - and for the feedback. Have a super duper weekend.
Who knew that education can be so fun and beautiful.
Thank you for all the work you put into it.
What a happy and delightful comment - thank you! Its a big pleasure and we are so happy that you find it fun to follow.
I love how the elephants show acceptance of the orphans and automatic love towards them. Its so heartwarming. Thank you for sharing these videos and teaching us so much about the behaviors. It’s fascinating!!!
The social structure of elephants and the unique Jabulani Herd in particular is truly amazing- and like you said, heartwarming. It is our pleasure - we hope that you enjoy the rest of the series.
Brilliant information, much appreciated. I worked as a pilot for 20 years all over Africa, (Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Kenya), and am engaged to a lovely lady in South Africa. She wears one of your high-quality hoodies with pride as do I, and a 3rd purchase was @ Christmas for my sister. (I ENCOURAGE others to support your work by visiting the on-line STORE!) We hope to visit in person later this year. Continued success. Best regards, Grant
Hi Grant - what a career you must have enjoyed! That is quite something. Thank you for supporting our merch - and flying our flag high, as they say! Congratulations on your engagement - we hope to see you both in the future. Thanks for being such a longstanding follower of HERD.
Awesome and congrats on your engagement 💍.
🐘❤️🐘❤️
yes yes yes, support HERD please with whatever you can, all of us
Very interesting and nice to see Bubi with Phabeni
Thank you very much
Excellent series! I appreciate the opportunity to learn more about these incredible beings.
Thank you very much for that feedback. It is a pleasure to be able to share the information and research by Elephant Voices in bite size chunks.
It is a good idea to inititate your herd of followers to the Elephants behaviours since these are our favourite Ellies which serve as exemples Today was particularely heartwarming with our youngest orphans Khanyisa and Phabeni It is so moving to see these magnificient females Lundi, Dame Setombe , Bubi, Tokwe offering their teats to confort the babies and even more to see Little Miss Sunshine doing the same for little Phabeni Too cute ! Thanks a million for these moments of Happiness
Thank you so much. We are glad you found this episode so heartwarming. So many special moments that have passed our eyes in recent year. It is really lovely to bring them to the forefront again in this series. Thank you for this comment of happiness too!
Very cute baby Elephants.
They are the sweetest!
I'm so grateful to get to watch the elephants adopt a baby, the calf, instinctively. Not all animals like orphans. But elephants are so gentle. ❤
bc they are very intelligent and loving
It is a blessing to watch, for sure!
I burst into tears at that beautiful moment for Phabeni and Lundi. Again, thank you for all your work!
Oh there is nothing better for the soul than a burst of happy tears!
I got literally lyrical about the Khanyisa moments. And to see her presenting her breast to little Phabeni... 🥰 My heart melts.
How adorable was that video clip? Our hearts melted too!
Thanks very much Adine 🌹 and wonderful careers for your help and support for all these formidable animals ❤️. Respect. Hi khanisa ❤️💕. Hi Phabeni ❤️ hi all elephants 🐘❤️ and animals ❤❤❤
Thank you for your lovely comment!
Very interesting and educational thank you ❤️🐘
Thank you so much - your feedback is very much appreciated, Eileen.
The comfort suckling is something i didn’t know about, but it would provide a bond between the adopted Mum and baby! really sweet! ❤️
It is so sweet - like their own personal pacifiers!
This educational video really shows how kind and maternal the female HERD elephants are. They have offered deep comfort to Khanyisa after her rescue and they are now offering it to Phabeni. Even Khanyisa has offered Phabeni an opportunity to suckle.
They truly are - they are more than a family, they are their own tribe! It's very special to see it unfold as it has.
Thank you for these interesting and informative videos. Looking forward to the next one. 🐘🐘🐘🇦🇺
Our pleasure - we are delighted to hear that you are enjoying them. Thank you!
Good morning this was a great video. I always wondered why a calf goes from female to female and suckles from them. I always thought it was a comfort thing, but now I understand why. Thank you for another great behavior of the elephant 🐘 world. Can't wait for the next one in the series. Have a beautiful day Jabulani 🐘 family.❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️
Good morning Dorothy! Thank you very much for your comment, and we are glad it brought some insight for you. We appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. Have a happy day further❤️
This is just priceless, as I'm always willing to learn everything I can about elephant behaviors!! Thank You!❤️💚🖤
Excellent - thanks so much, Terry, and we hope you will enjoy the rest of the series. We highly recommend following Elephant voices on UA-cam, Instagram or Facebook too if you have a keen interest. Though you probably do already ;-)
Enjoying this information series. Thanks for sharing in helping us understand their behaviour ❤
That is such great news for us to read - thank you, Judith - and for taking the time to let us know too. Take care
Good morning from Florida 🇺🇸💕🌺🌴💗 Thank you, several of my questions have been answered. This is a wonderful series.
Good afternoon from Hoedspruit, Linda! That is wonderful to hear, thank you for the feedback - it is very much appreciated.
I love these educational episodes and I LOVE watching the gracious behaviours of the magnificent, accepting and supporting elephants!!!🧡🐘🧡🐘🥰🥰🥰
Music to our ears - thank you🧡🐘
Thanks for this brilliant series!! Being an animal lover, I came to HERD during lockdown in 2020 and fell deeply for our precious pink princess. I have become intimately a part of this wonderful family that means the world to me.
Kevin Richardson, the Lion Whisperer, released a recent video, "The Last Lion". He answered the question, "why don't people care?" He replied, " because it does not affect them." Educating us and sharing these magnificent beings' lives hopefully helps to bridge the gap. At least for me. Blessings from California USA. 💙💋💙💋💙
Thank you Linda! What a journey it has been, right! Our followers from those earlier years walked the journey with Khanyisa through covid - and her story represents such hope and light and triumph. Thank you for being part of it!
@@herdelephantorphanage little pinky helped me and so many others during a difficult time. She will always be my special cherub!
awwww x
❤❤❤❤ GODBLESS EVERYONE
Thank you, and God Bless you too!
Setomble and Tokwe's tusks are something to see very beautiful ones 🐘🐘and beautiful ladies as well they are 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 i love listening to them talk that low rumble Lundi is a very special lady indeedwe are ALL very very proud of our pink princess YES we are, she has a very BIG heart and so intelligent our princess
God bless them allsuch a special HERD
They are beautiful and so very straight! Absolutely agree!
Khanyisa is such a beautiful soul. That she would offer her nipple to P. when she is not even 5 years old yet shows remarkable empathy. ❤❤❤
Absolutely!
I'm drawn to these wonderful episodes like a magnet, and the behind the scenes closer look at this behavior. My heart is so full to see Bubi and Phabeni bonding so sweetly! Bubi has a beautiful and deep connection to Khanyisa and it appears she will have the same with baby Beni ❤ And look at Khanyisa being a big sister!!! I'm in awe at the amount of selfless love she showers on Phabeni! Astounding elephants and their huge capacity of love and protection.....it just doesn't get any sweeter than this ❤ Many many thanks for this wonderful information and the lessons this magnificent Herd teaches us all!!! ❤❤❤❤
I think Baby K intensely remembers what she was going thru herself a short time ago & has no problem relating to him. I'm so happy that she's bonding w/ him as his "big" sister. ❤😅
@Renee29forever
Hi Renee💞
Wasn't this the most informative and endearing video? Sweet Khanyisa is being such a great big sister to Phabeni! Even with the stance (front leg forward) offering him to suckle. She has even surprised me at bottle time for Phabeni out in the bush. I thought for sure she'd try to take his bottle, but she's been there for him as a big sister like Tamisa was for her.
Take care my friend🌷💞
Thank you Renee, for the wonderful comment - it brought a big smile to our faces. Selfless love - so true... we look forward to sharing Phabeni's journey with you too.
❤️❤️
And it gives her a bit of greater purpose now too, as big sister - which is lovely! ❤️❤️
So beautiful to see the relationship and lovingness of the herd! Elephants are intelligent and caring! Thanks for all you do! I love my hoodies from your organization! Extremely well made and perfect for spring/fall weather of the Midwest! Peace! ❤
Thanks a million for the comment - and for supporting our merch store too! We are very happy to hear that you are happy with the quality. Thank you so much for the feedback
Thanks!
Amazing! That is so very much appreciated, Amalia - thank you!
Magical to see and learn about the world of these sacred creatures - thank you so much for the wonderful work you're putting in to create this series, and of course to HERD for everything you do - you are heroes amongst humans! ❤
Thanks for the wonderful comment and it is a pleasure - glad it is being enjoyed so.
A great compendium of useful elephant information and a helpful companion to the usual snippets of information about the herd. Very intetesting, thank you
Thank you so much for the positive feedback, Gabrielle.
I am in love with Bubi and Phabeni! I haven't seen much of them two together yet so it was nice to see. Could you please do a video on how Bubi reacted to Phabeni and what relationship she has with him now as well as how she is treating Khanyisa or if she has given Khanyisa a knock like she did Timi?
Thank you for the feedback, its a nice idea - we will see what we can do!
What a wonderful outreach idea to offer specific elephant behavioral videos in a series! Thank you so much! 💕
Ultra cute how 🐘 s can teach each other thing so quickly. Wish I could help The Herd more financially. Will ask among my friends but even a one off payment is good I believe and I do that when I can. Thanks Herd Team for the daily joy you give me. ❤
Adine, I enjoy listening to talking in Afrikaans. I am from Durban KZN, where Afrikaans is rare. I do speak in English, but I enjoy the feeling in my mouth when I speak Afrikaans.
I'm remembering Afrikaans' words that I have forgotten.
Dankie! Geniet dit!
Thank you for another amazing tutorial! It is clear to see that the calves are not just suckling for sustenance as these mothers are not producing milk. Seeking frequent comfort and connection must be so vital for the calf's well-being. As for the mothers, this is another reason why I admire and love elephants! Their commitment and connection to these little calves is inspiring! ❤️
Better than pacifiers. 😊
Thanks for the lovely feedback, Susan. So much love and empathy with the herd, which makes the herd so very special.
Absolutely!
I look forward for each new episode, and this one features the adorables Khanyisa and Phabeni! 🙌 Thank you Elephant Voices for sharing your extensive research and for helping us more fully understand with these video examples from the beloved Jabulani Herd. The clip with the rumble exchange between Tokwe and Phabeni is wonderful, I almost could hear T say “It’s okay baby.” 🥹
Thank you so much. This was a fascinating video. Phabeni comfort suckled from Bubi! Way to go Bubi! I was waiting for this moment. I am sooooo happy for Bubi. Any opportunity for Bubi to be less skittish around the females and feel respected and cared for, makes me happy. Thank you, Setombe. You are very gracious!
Our pleasure! We appreciate the feedback. Bubi is a legend!
I enjoyed this informative video enormously. It was interesting, and the narrator speaks clearly & at a good pace for the listener.
The subtitles are lovely and clear and stay up.long enough for me to enjoy the picture and read.
Marvellous, & thank you for these interesting educational videos.
That makes us so very happy to read, thank you! Your feedback means the world to us, to know that we are on track and in the right direction. Thank you
It was really nice to see Phabeni and Bubi around 15:15 ! I have been wondering if the two of them were bonding because we all know how much Bubi loves calves, but she sometimes seems to be an outsider amongst the other cows.
Absolutely true. You will enjoy our latest post which touches on those dynamics
Khanyisa taking the suckle stance was so moving! She will indeed be a wonderful allo mom.
100% ... she learned from the best!
It's amazing that the Herd and its carers compel people to open their hearts sometimes on a very personal level, as seen in the comments. You do more good than you probably ever imagined. xox
Isn't it just so lovely? We are so blessed with an incredible community of followers (like yourself) who seem to carry the same love and values and respect for one another. Thank you for such a beautiful comment. It motivates us more than you know. Hope you have as super weekend.
@@herdelephantorphanage As wonderful as we (or I) may be, I wish I had more $$$ to support your work. The Solar Project is a Must (not musth lol). I don't know if the Southern Africa drought is at panic stage in ZA but people here (Québec) with plentiful water should help, at least financially or by propagating the situation. Many, many thanks once again. If there was a Nobel Prize for Goodness, I would nominate HERD. Hugs.
Precious nurturing of their babies. Trunks touching 🥰
Elephants are very interesting and such loving gentle souls. Thank you for this third episode.
🙋🏼♀️👏❤️🐘🐘🐘…
Our pleasure!
I feel so lucky to be able to observe and learn about the different behaviors of these most magnificent elephants. Thank you.
It is our pleasure - huge thanks to Elephant Voice for their hard work and research over so many years.

Thank you so much for the kind comment!
Beautiful, so moving, seeing the comfort that they all given to the babies phabeni and Khayanisa , and Khayanisa is doing for phabeni so heart-warming thank you for the education ❤
It is a massive pleasure. Thank you for watching
Very interesting. I have always loved elephants. So learning about their behaviour is a real treat. thank you Adine🥰
You’re welcome 😊 thanks for watching
Elephants are so fascinating. I love watching the Herd videos even more knowing what to watch for. ❤️
That makes us so happy to hear! That is our intention - to increase understanding and interest and awareness, through the work that Elephant Voices has already spent so many years researching. Thank you so much.
Ahhh little khanyisa. How small she was. ❤
Feels like forever ago, doesn't it!? ❤️
A-MA-ZING, 3-yr old Khanyisa, still a baby herself, taking the suckle-stance + prompt w/her trunk to allow Phabeni to suckle from her! Precious footage!! esp'ly considering Khanyise is transitioning from the resident baby @ HERD herself...
She, Phabeni, the entire herd + team NEVER cease to amaze and enthrall me!
❤️ 🐘 🐘 🐘 🐘 🐘 🐘 🐘 ❤️
It is so incredibly amazing, Debra! Just seeing Khanyisa so sure of herself and so helpful and giving back to Phabeni, means so much to all of us. Snapshots in time that make it all so worth while. Thank you for the lovely comment
Thank you for sharing the information. I’ve enjoyed learning.
It is such a pleasure - thank you.
Thank you for these educational videos. Elephants remain mysterious in many ways. I have learned through your series and videos with HERD that communication among elephants has a number of forms including what the human ear cannot hear.
Thank you for the lovely feedback - glad you are learning with us. Much appreciated.
Such sweetness, what a joy to watch, thank you for sharing, lovely to reminisce on dear Khanyisa who came into our lives at such sad times. Phabeni now had stolen our hearts. I had not seen before the clip where Khanyisa comes near Phabeni then he suckles from her too, just wow ❤
Thank you for the feedback, we are so happy you enjoyed it. I think many of us will hold on to the moments watching Khanyisa fight through the odds during covid, and to conquer - as we all did through that really tough time in our lives. That clip is beyond special, we agree - and it represents so much of how far she has come too. Thanks for the lovely comment
Aww Khanyisa. Seeing her as a little baby, her tiny trunk seeking contact with elephant and humans alike. So loving. And now with phabeni letting him suckle. They are both needy little things and will grow up together.
What a surprise to see Khanyisa try to suckle Phabeni! She is learning from the allomothers. Just a few weeks ago she tried a few kicks at Phabeni, but now she has accepted him as her baby brother. Elephants are wonderful.
They are pretty amazing! Every day they continue to surprise us with their warmth and love and duty to family❤️.
This is a beautifully produced video of these magnificent beings very very well done herd and no wind noise to spoil it so interesting thank you so very much ❤❤❤❤
Thank you for the feedback- we are really happy to hear that you enjoyed it.
Thank you so much for the tutorial.
It brought tears of joy to my eyes to see Kahnyisa as another mother.
They will all be great mothers, can't wait.
It is a pleasure. It was a very special moment to see, knowing how far she has come.
@herdelephantorphanage
I saw Kahnyisas' rescue. You're absolutely right she has come a very long way.
Awesome series and beautiful Elephants ❤
Thank you so much, David - much appreciated
I love those elephants. Thank you so much for sharing.
You are so welcome
I really enjoy this series. The purring is great.
Thanks so much!
Very educating ❤
Thank you for taking the time to watch and provide feedback.
14:50 Who's comfort suckling, Phabeni or Setombe?!😆She loves him SO much it makes my heart ache for them both!🥰
I just about wept when I saw Khanyisa offer her teat to little Phabeni the first time😦😭She's so loving and quickly got over her envy of the New Behbeh when she realized she could be the best Big Sister ever with a little guidance from Klaserie! She's come SUCH a long way on her short journey and she's in the right place with all the right people. Thank you all!!💝
I just love this series, it's so important what you're doing with it!! Thanks for your dedication and time put in💛
Isn't it just so beautiful the way that Setombe is doting on Phabeni? You are so right! Who would have known that would be how things developed. It will be so interesting to see how the dynamics continue to unfold. Who would have thought 4 years ago that Khaniysa would be trying to get a calf to suckle from her in a few years time. It really has been a wonderful journey so far. Thank you so much for being part of it and for the time you took to reply so nicely.
They’re God’s most beautiful creatures. ❤
They truly are unique in so many ways
Beauty Khanyisa, cutie Phabeni and lovely ellies 😘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I have to find Episode 1 + 2... What a GREAT idea, series!
Here you go! A link to the series playlist. You will find the intro video explaining how it all works first and then episodes 1 -3 which we will continue to add to. We hope you enjoy it,
This is so informative, and I am so glad you covered this subject and gave us so much information. I had a lot of questions about these interacts seeing that the mature cows were on contraception, and the adopted calves weren't able to get milk. But I didn't understand the comfort suckling, but I do now, I thought the calves might get stressed with not being able to feed. But this answered all those questions. Can't wait for the next episode! I love Herd! 🤗
Wonderful - we are delighted this helped answer some questions you had - it can be a bit confusing. Especially with the calves actually drinking milk formula after all of that! But it helps comfort them tremendously. Thank you for the lovely feedback.
Beautiful rumbles ❤❤❤
The sweetest!
Another excellent and informative Video! Thank you so much! 💖🐘💖🙏🙏
Thanks so much Jan, for taking the time to watch. It is our pleasure, always.
Thank you for very interesting filming and information, marvellous touching and moving ❤

Could you do a video on how they correct the calves? How they actively stop trouble before the calves can really start, is amazing.
We are working through our footage and in time we hope we can reach many of these wonderful topics.
amazing behaviour and ethics of elephant psychology and what they do on a regular basis thank u kindly and blessings to u alll
Thank you very much
Very interesting...as a newby, I had wondered if they were dry suckling...what gentle kind animals they are.
Thank you so much. They are pretty amazing animals, aren't they?
