That guy getting out of 55 is in shock, the injuries and pain have not caught up with his adrenaline at full tilt. Wonder how he was an hour after the crash?
People don't realize the forces at work when a car goes out of control and/or crashes. It takes a huge amount of energy to get a car that big flipping and rolling and all of that is transferred to you inside. Back in the day I used to install belts into my older cars, because they obviously didn't have them, and I never simply ran a bolt through the floor. And that is what I suspect happened here and that's why the belts pulled out. I backed up the bolt with a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" steel plate under the car. He's really lucky he walked away, particularly with his legs out the windshield for one or two revolutions. Yow. I'm sure he'll review his seat belt fastening engineering for his next car. I know I sure would. Bummer on the car too.
0:40 As a pro photographer for 40+ years, I LOVE the way the female behind the cars at the start is trying so hard to pretend she's a real photographer, using a cell phone. LOL As far as the crash goes, I believe the driver of the 55 initially responded to poor lane control of the Camaro, which started him going out of control. Just before the crash, notice that the 55 was aimed right at the Camaro and heading straight at him. Then the 55 cuts heavily to the right and flips. I personally think the driver of the 55 did what he could to make sure he didn't crash into the Camaro and possibly cause injury to both drivers in a wreck. He should be commended.
After all said I'm glad the Chevy driver is alive and he walked away for a minute while the car was rolling and I saw his legs out the window I thought it was going to end in a bad way I'm glad it didn't cars can be fixed and repaired human life only comes around once god bless
Sean Swab, so why the F didn`t the douchebag angel just prevent the crash... Oh yeah, freewheel, the ultimate cop out of idiot delusional religious morons. (Freewheel as in free will, was a joke, you halfwit).
I saw that. The 55 swerved because the Camaro was coming at him! The Camaro should have lifted when his big fat tires kept breaking loose and not going straight!!!
SanDiegoHotRod i do agree with your statement. But the driver of the 55 should have lifted as well because he was going sideways from the very beggining of the race and he could see that the camaro was out of control. The track is the biggest part of the problem, with no traction to be had.
I worked medical at a track and saw a lot of hairy stuff. I am also a retired firefighter and dealt with a lot of vehicular carnage. I watched that video several times. What I saw coming out of the car was likely not the seat belt. Both ends would have to fail simultaneously - not likely. The injuries at the track were generally not serious, with a few exceptions. The injuries and deaths I dealt with as a firefighter were directly proportionate to the use or non-use of the belts. The driver in the '55, I'm convinced, was not belted in. The starter should have been monitoring that. Notice that the driver was favoring his right leg. I suspect some form of injury there. Was he lucky? Oh, yes. I'll lay off the IQ factor.
I agree, no belt at all, just a roll bar as safety equipment. Many others could have been killed by his stupidity. He was very lucky and I am glad he was not seriously injured, I just hope he never races again with other people present.
Why wear a helmet if your not going to put on a seat belt. Preferably a harness! Buy a clue idiot your lucky to be alive and even luckier to have walked away! NEVER PUT WHEEL IN THE CAR AT THE BIG END!!! EVER!!!
He added a lap belt, but didn't reinforce the attachment points like factory installed belts. The stress just pulled the bolt through the floorboard, might as well have no belt at all.
I had '55, '56 & '57 Chevys and none of them came with seat belts. A street car that's 50 years old has some rust in the floorpan where the aftermarket belts attach. Even the huge washers I put under the floor would pull through a weakened floor and the seat belts become unattached. This rollover was extremely violent. Enough so that even a belt that stayed attached could even have a latch fail. Bottom line is that driver is one of the luckiest in the world to walk away from the crash. I hope he didn't end up with severe internal injuries as a result.
A friend put a roll bar and 3 point harness in his '67 mustang convertible and another in a '59 Fairlane, both for racing, and many others I know have. They can be installed in anything just you can't keep that exact stock appearance but I think the trade off is worth it if going to be doing this with the car. It can be done in a tasteful way that will look decent.
That just made every body's 55 Chevy go up in value, another one bites the dust. A restoration on a roll like that will be costly, the frame will be shot, along with front and rear end components, ahhh it just twists everything.
When I was a kid, it was common to let the smaller kids stand up on the front seat. My parents thought by throwing their arm across my younger brother was good enough to stop him in a crash. Unbelievable. No wonder the highways and streets were dangerous, besides that, no three point seat belts, airbags, hard metal around you, none collapsing body, etc.
Lets just hope the driver learned from this experience. Hopefully he doesn't give up on racing, rebuilds the car, and installs (and wears) the proper harness... Glad he survived this incident.
Everything in the video was perfect except for the opposite driver who caused the accident the guy in the 55 Chevy is lucky to be alive because he shouldn't even have had the accident there was a loser on the left who thought he was Evel Knievel and thought he was John Force Racing for a hundred million dollars and a sponsorship it's called letting off the gas and controlling your car the guy was so squirrelly it is a natural instinct to pull away from somebody when it looks like they're going to ram right into you
😖ug, really? That's like stomping on a pile of ants on the ground, and then saying, those that got missed by the foot "had the angel's "looking out for them. Dude got lucky. Period.
I like how the guy in the Camaro completely just bailed the scene and didn't bother to even stop and see if the guy was okay and to help out if he could .I would have. Could have been a lot worse I'm sure. Thank God he was ok.
What did you guys expect. It looks like they're racing on a one way street the width of a something in the Hollywood hills. He sure walked off like a champ though. Dude is tough as nails. That last roll over looked like his knees hit the concrete. That's a man right there ladies and gentlemen. Good Lord. That's Evil Knievel level of eating shit and asking for seconds.
In slower classes you can basically bring a stock streetcar to the strip, the extra safety regulations only apply once you go faster than a certain time.

What a lucky guy... he left the car like he had just parked it....wow. Blessed man!
No he didn't! You can clearly see he isn't walking right, something definitely wrong with his right leg, and he looks to be in shock.
I'm more amazed at the door slamming wide open and closing shut like perfectly got to love American ingenuity
meri-fucking-cuhh
Not ingenuity, crap engineering, door should have stayed closed. Cars then were built cheap not safe.

Thank you. Somebody with some sense.
@Robert H Cochran might make a few bucks selling what's left of it.
The song "I can't drive 55" seems appropriate here.
Jeff Pittel yeah but at the same time it wasn’t really his fault because the other car made him swerve
Dark Gaming Channel how he was in his lane ?
Kyle Kehoe cause he swerved towards him which made him swerve? It’s not rocket science
The fact that he walked away is just crazy. He has an angel watching over him.

I think the chrome strip on the left front fender is still good!
I'm calling dibs on the left park light!
Judging by the legs out the window, I'd say he lost by two feet.
And two pounds in his pants

At first I assumed that he was walking funny, after exiting the car, because he hurt his legs but then I realized that he probably shit his pants! LOL

Q i see it now...
Q Or He pulled some foam from the seat due to pucker factor.
Q fuckin hilarious dude, nice one
that would be appropriate since he has shit for brains not driving with restraints. Dumb ass!
He went head over heels for his 55 Chevy!
wow. the first rolling his leg already out the windshield. he is lucky, he can walk away from the car.

Awesome dude!
I'm guessing a 4 point or 5 anchored to the roll cage was one of the first things installed on the rebuild.
Insane , that's why the proper safety equipment is necessary
