NK detonated nuclear bomb in 2006. Probably Iran will have a nuke sooner or later but having a small compact deliverable weapon is different science. For example you have hand grenade but no hands to throw it towards your enemy kind of makes it useless until you find an alternative.

Our rejection of Nuclear power was a massive mistake, and the environment has payed dearly for it as we continue to rely on fossil fuels for our electricity
it makes little difference, methane leaks from oil drilling both old and new, cattle farming, deforestation, road networks, air and sea trade networks, and gas based home heating, all produce massive amounts of greenhouse gasses, and meaningfully addressing it all would have needed doing decades ago, now all there is is mitigating a coming disaster into a less bad disaster, with the impacts of recent decades not even fully visible in the environment at the current time, and china would have massed coal powerplants regardless up to this point
We need uranium for nuclear power and that needs to be mined like coal. Our best choice is renewable. Also plant some trees.
@@trentfila6186 wrong, the uranium it's extracted in sky open cave, But it can also be mined at sea. Also by itself The mining of uranium does not create climate-altering gases, it is how it is used. It's better inform yourself before speak.

I understand it is difficult to create a short video on such a subject, so, really well done.
However, personally I feel the case of South Africa should have been mentioned being a former nuclear power too and the only country fully giving up its weapons on its own will.
And maybe also the case of the former Soviet Union states which were for a very short time also in possession of weapons to some extend when the Soviet Union fell apart.

@Suprabh Pranjal You absolutely correct, and it's kind of disappointing that Geo History, fails to mention not just this, pretty outstanding by itself- fact, but even the fact of existence of nuclear weapon program in SA, even though - SA officially admitted to have one, unlike Israel for example...
We know, for the masive inmigration in the middle of the 20th century of asiatic people, including fat man and little boy survivors, there's a few documentaries about their experience.
They had to dismantle theirs

South Africa decided to build a bomb just to see/prove if/that they could. They did it, and then they dismantled it.

@Made In china You mean that 200.000 innocent people deserved it to get killed?
@Made In china You can't justify war crimes with war crimes.
@Made In china The nukes weren't necessary. Especially not the second one. Japan was thinking about surrendering because of the Soviet Union. After the end of the second world war in Europe the Soviets could focus on Japan. So the nukes weren't necessary.

I believe that some crucial details were left out on the Manhattan Project, most notably that the US, while leading the Manhattan Project, did not have the UK join immediately, and in fact "In July 1940, Britain had offered to give the United States access to its scientific research, and the Tizard Mission's John Cockcroft briefed American scientists on British developments. He discovered that the American project was smaller than the British, and not as far advanced." It wasn't until mid war that the project was increased exponentially, and the British "Tube Alloys" was absorbed into the American project.
Gotta love how, in less than 50 years, humanity went from "Wow, this thing leaves a trace on a photo plate. That's pretty interesting!" to "Big energy bomb go boom and win us war!"
Never underestimate our primal need for violence.
@April 2089 Technically Einstein didn't want to give the knowledge to anyone who would use it to make bombs but he feared the Nazi's would figure it out from his notes and so was pressured into giving the US the knowledge by circumstances.

India was the first country to adopt a "no first use" policy after its second nuclear tests Pokhran-II in 1998. In August 1999 the Indian government released a draft of the doctrine which asserts that nuclear weapons are solely for deterrence and that India will pursue a policy of "retaliation only". The document also maintains that India "will not be the first to initiate a nuclear first strike, but will respond with punitive retaliation should deterrence fail".
I think USA and UK had "no first strike policy" before India developed nuclear bombs.

- USSR countries formerly possessing nuclear weapons

Touchy subject, nobody is going to trust that rabble with nuclear weapons.
They only disarmed because they didn't trust black people to have them.
I was waiting to see the topic regarding the nuclear detonation in the South Pacific Ocean, and South Africa publicly announcing the destruction of it's nuclear weapons.
South Africa is the only country to ever destroy it's weapons that it had developed, a very important mark on nuclear history.
What other topics was skipped in this documentary?
Jeff Nic Switzerland once thought about constructing nuclear weapons, but decided not to after the collapse of the USSR, however seeing as this topic is really obscure, it’s understandable that he didn’t talk about it.

Hi Geo History viewers. I'm the narrator of the English version of Geo History. I don't usually comment here, but times are extraordinary. As many of you have correctly pointed out, this channel and its French and Russian counterparts have been hacked. We're anguished and angry, but UA-cam is aware and hopefully working on restoring our account. We're hoping things will be sorted out and that our videos will remain untouched. We've worked very hard to build a vibrant community of viewers over the past two years. What is particularly hard to understand is how someone thinks it's a good idea to hijack some else's channel and broadcast spam. How is that going to help anyone's cause?
Obviously don't click on any links from the hacker's mindless, low-quality live streams. It goes against everything we stand for. We aim to spread knowledge, not spam.
Supported by our community, we promise to be back in full force as soon as possible to continue our mission to educate. Thanks for bearing with us.

Very good video!
Just one correction:
Chernobyl did not have a containment building around the reactor, just a normal industry building.
That is why Three mile island accident was contained, because it had a containment building.
If Chernobyl had a containment building too, it would not had contaminated the place with its radiation.
But there is one difference between 3MI and Chernobyl... 3MI didn't explode because of a design fault in the reactor unlike Chernobyl Reactor #4 even if it had a containment building the explosion would have blown it to bits
I think that the initial explosion from the chernobyl reactor would have also blown through any containment building around it. It was a massive explosion.
@@jamisongarrison1972 the initial explosion was only just a steam explosion, yes granted it was strong enough to lift off a 10 tonne lid, but wouldn't have been enough to destroy the building
The core itself never blew up at 3 mile island; the building it was in had nothing to do with it.
Exactly what I wanted to say, this really displays a wrong image of the whole sovjet situation which had cheaper reactors and thus resulted without extra failbacks in the catastrophy.
I think Geo History is one of the best history channels and deserves more subscribers.
Nice and informative keep going 👏
Great content. Maybe, you can have another video focussing on Thorium power.
I like how it fails to mention the fact Ernest Rutherford split the atom first, I was excited for about a second when he mentioned him but that soon came with the realization that no one cares about New Zealand. He did it in 1918 if anyone cares.
Also found out about how he fails to mention New Zealands role in the preventing Nuclear testing in the Pacific and creating a Nuclear exclusion zone around New Zealand.
@Issa Latar I understand that but splitting the atom is a fundamental element to how nuclear fission is achieved so leaving that sidelined is pretty notable but I know that whatever I say won't affect the video so I don't care too much.

fun fact: in italy there was actually a conference if they shouldve built reactors to produce energy, but as this happened after the chernobyl disaster, most of the people voted no and so theres no nuclear reactors in italy.
Actually there were already 5 reactors in the ‘70 and Italy was after USA and Uk for production. After three Mile Island some plants were stopped to improve controls and after Chernobyl the referendum results closed the nuclear power on Italian territory. A plant was not finished yet. However we are still managing the radioactive waste. That’s the main issue with this technology.
