Wondering if you should buy RV insurance? The RV Odd Couple share their RV insurance review.
RV Insurance Policies are not always transparent. After having our own issues with our RV Insurance Policy, we wanted to share what you NEED to know when getting RV Insurance. Long story short we weren't covered by our RV insurance so we want to share why, share what to look for when insuring an RV, and we want to recommend our insurance agent:

Being an agent for nearly 40 years, I can tell you they are giving you very valuable lessons here. Kudos to you!
We appreciate this Gregory :) We have brain damage from the research.....LOL
John and Mercedes are giving good advice. I'm a former first responder. In Oklahoma the OHP has specially trained officers called "size and weight enforcement" or SWE. They carry in their vehicles special mobile equipment to weigh and calculate your vehicle and tow vehicle weights. Officers will generally not call an SWE unit for run of the mill accidents involving an RV. However if there is a more serious accident involving injuries they often times will be called. It doesn't require a fatality for the SWE to investigate. These officers also patrol the highways routinely, so if you are pulled over by one they may elect to do a random check. It takes them less than 10 minutes in most cases to weigh anything on wheels. I believe it's always a good idea to run your vehicle over Cat scales and be familiar with your weights and limits.
Thank you for your Service and taking the time to share this information! This information is invaluable. This is why we love the RV Odd Squad and do everything we can to help. Saved this post in a note and will use in the future. Thanks again 🇺🇸👍😀🇺🇸
While I only have a small trailer, I hit the CAT Scales before any trip of significant length. I am always below my tow and axle weight ratings but doing this give me peace of mind that I didn't mess up and do something that causes an imbalance. For the $13 or so it costs its money well spent. Doesn't hurt there is one on my way out of town either.
In Oz, our HWP don't have scales but special Police units do, very similar and we also have RMS scalies ( these are DOT inspectors) that usually setup roadside inspections at State borders but with Covid and now borders are closed again, they're on major roads throughout each State. The reason they setup at Boards is we have Japanese light trucks towing upto 3.5 Tonne (7716 lbs) and people get caught out with GCM and GVM hence fines Government loves fining you. I have a RAM 2500 and Caravan of 3.5 tonne so it's smile and wave, I don't get a flag in.
Good to know. Thank you. I will add Oklahoma to my no-go states. Would not want to go there anyway. lol
Just got off the phone with Marty. He is FABULOUS! So understanding about what we needed. We are not full timers. He explained everything so well.
My wife and I been full time almost 4 yrs she had a stroke about 2 yrs ago we r still living in our 5vr but not traveling need to redo policy, I’m having hard time opening link for Charlotte Insurance do u have Marties number? I tried to search web for Charlotte insurance and there r quite a few do u have their web address ? Thanks
Do you have a direct phone number for Marty?
I have had the most excellent experience with Marty over the phone and by email over the last couple days. We are going to pick up our first RV in less than two weeks, so when I followed the directions after submitting my contact form and emailed directly letting him know about our time crunch, he was very quick to respond. I am a detail-oriented person, and he patiently walked through every question I asked, giving a thorough explanation to everything I threw at him. I even sent tables I'd created his way with different comparators I was looking at! Marty is seriously one of the most patient, helpful insurance agents I've had the pleasure of working with. Thank you so much for this recommendation! I would have never found him, otherwise.
Hi guys. What amazing information. I used to work for insurance company 18 years. It's so true to take good care of your clients. I would not have been able to sleep nights , if I hadn't taken great care of them. My mindset was treat them like your mommy. I always was so happy to get calls thanking me for making sure they were not exposed. It is to bad that people have to find out the wrong way. God bless all.
We couldn't agree more Shelly
I love how you two can laugh at yourselves and admit your mistakes. You're probably saving others stress, money, time, etc by passing on this valuable information. Thanks much. Hope Sage is doing well. Bless your family.
Hi Pup Lover 💚 Sage is progressing amazingly well... Thank you & God Bless you
Our longtime auto insurance company is not oriented to the needs of RV coverage, so when we recently ordered our first RV, we called Charlotte Insurance after my wife watched this video. We're very happy we did. Agency president Marty Karriker and his assistant Clark Harrell were outstandingly conscientious, with great follow-through and with patience in responding to our questions and concerns, to make sure everything went right. We really appreciate the personal treatment. Before trying Marty I had earlier contacted a different insurance company with an RV insurance specialty, which felt like an assembly line operation. The contrast was remarkable. Thanks Marty and Clark, and thanks to the RV Odd Couple for pointing us in their direction!
I just wanted to say thank you both for this video. Yes, I had insurance on my RV and truck through a MAJOR insurance provider and I asked them the questions about contents about roadside about all the things that are in this video in email. It has been waiting three and a half weeks for response and nothing. As of August ,5, 2020 I am with Charlotte Insurance and Marty is AWESOME!!!! This is the smoothest insurance experience I have ever had.
Aww shucks...Thanks Luther! You have a nice RIG!! Call me anytime.
Im starting my journey with fulltime living on the road. Due to this pandemic I have lost my home and a good friend has opened up her home to me, but rather than start over with a rental home I've made the firm decision to hit the road and live. I'm a 63 year old retired office management professional, and currently a home health care giver. I still have an adventure ahead of me so I appreciate all of your great tips and information that will empower me. PLEASE KEEP THOSE VIDEOS COMING!
Stay safe and let us know how it goes 👍💚😊

There are a few States that Charlotte Insurance does not cover: Missouri
Ask Marty to explain to you what an "Umbrella Policy" is. Before I left the US, as a business owner I had a $1 Million Umbrella Policy for less than $100/year. Good to have as a business owner to increase Liability coverage limits and fill in cracks in and between other policies.
OMG!! So thankful I watched this video tonight. I'm closing on RV on 8/18/22 & just reached out to Geico, my auto insurance provider, just before watching the video!! After the video I emailed Charlotte Ins. Thx so much for sharing and helping newbies like me!!
Boy am I sure glad you are doing these videos. My husband and I are hopefully looking to full time RV in the next 5 years, and I told him about your channel, and he has been watching as well as I have for quite sometime. We are looking to have a UA-cam channel as well, and you guys have really been a huge help in explaining a lot of things. We wish you guys the best and hope everything works out for Sage. She is adorable! Love and hugs to all, and hopefully one day we can meet you guys in person. You guys are awesome! ❤️
Thank you Judy💚💚💚. Sage is amazing. Hope we cross paths with you
You guys are awesome!! My name is will and i am a retired vet from the army. About half a year ago i decided i was going to sell my house buy a travel trailer, live in that and slowly make my back home to Anchorage Alaska. Now i didn't find your channel right away but when I did, I knew i was in the right place. You both are so welcoming and thoughtful. There were so many questions i had and so many i didn't know i needed to ask. Your channel, your family and this community is AMAZING. I am still gathering info and keeping my options open but you both have helped me so much with this process. Hopefully by September i will be making my move over to the RV life and starting my adventure. thank you for everything Will H.(San Antonio)
Thank you for your Service 🇺🇸😊. Always happy to help where we can. Let us know when you launch 🚀
23 years as a cop, and dreaming of FTRV after retiring in 5 years...I walk away, 8 weeks ago. I have a healthy(ish) savings, that got me a very nice (used) Class A coach. My only debt, is my Volvo S90, but I do have equity in it, so it will sell fast. My rig will be delivered any day now. I am so nervous. I haven't checked on insurance, yet - This made me feel better about that part. Thank you.
Congratulations and thank you for your Service🇺🇸👍😊 We love our LEO’s! Please let us know how it goes and let us know if you have questions. We have a Private Facebook Group for the RV Odd Squad that you may find helpful.
I've got 20 years under my belt as a LEO and retired. You will love it, enjoy the ride. Hope to see you sometime, happy trails brother.
George Bowman Thank you, brother. Be well. Shout out, if you have Twitter. @ contheoracies.
Street_King I hope you have a wonderful retirement... Thank you for your service as a Cop! :-). I feel so bad what is happening with Cops now being disrespected. Stay safe.
@@jameswalker6806 Thank you, brother.
Thank you, John & Mercedes! Because of you I found out that I was not covered by Geico for Full Replacement value. They would not give me FRV. They did not offer me FRV when I took out the policy. The Geico agent said they do offer it now when people call to insure their RV. We are not full-timers but we ended up using Good Sam Insurance who uses National General Insurance. I had a very positive experience with the young man who signed us up and we pay no more than we were paying for Geico for Total Replacement Value. Now we have TRV through 2024 and great coverage for comprehensive, collision and liability. We have a Good Sam and a AAA RV roadside assistance coverage. We are covered by more than one roadside service because I we watched a video that says to carry more than one because in some areas of the country it is easier to get roadside service if you have multiple plans to call. And thanks for reminding us about being overweight. We don't full-time RV and try not to carry a whole lot of stuff with us.
Always happy to help Diane💚👍😊. Glad you have proper coverage
I sold insurance many years ago and I know who to talk to. Have a real "fun time" policy covering what you need. I also have a million dollar umbrella policy. You even need protection if somebody trips and hurts themself cutting through your site. I have heard many people complain about insurance companies when they should have shopped for coverage not cost. I say all the time that, "cheap often cost you more."
We couldn't agree more Roy! Thank you as always
I agree. I have an umbrella policy as well.
Agreed!
This is Vince from Lakeland Florida. Hello again. I appreciate your help. I just got off the phone with my insurance agent. I'm covered pretty well. I asked her all your points you hit on. We got lucky. But thanks for the heads up! We also have coverage for anyone on our campsite or in our RV while we're camping. And we have GAP insurance because of the loan. $3000 for belongings. We're weekend warriors lol. Didnt need much. But did find out, that check is separate from the check they cut you if you have a total loss. Stay safe and enjoy life!
Fantastic! Love to hear this! This is why you need an Agent looking out for you :)
Yes sir. Yes ma'am
Hi John, hi Mercedes! You’re so right about all those points regarding RV insurance. Absolutely, insurance is a very tricky but very necessary thing in RVing, whether you’re full-time or just a weekender or summertime traveler. Your friend, Marty, really is a terrific guy in explaining just where you were lacking in insurance. One other thing about weight though...when you have your “loaded” RV weighed, especially if you own a MOTORHOME! When you get professionally weighed, you MUST include the passengers who will be riding in the RV. It’s not just how much water, canned goods, hand tools, Instant Pots and toasters, clothes, hoses, and pretty outdoor string lights are being carried. PEOPLE (unfortunately 😬😳!) carried along with those other things are going to be the greatest single source of your added vehicle weight! Hope this helps you and other Odd Squadders (is that a real word?!) when figuring your weight. Love ya all,
Virginia
Always love your insights 💚💚💚
As my wife and I prepare for our one year (maybe longer) adventure as full timers, you guys have been a wealth of information for us. We've watched most everything you've done and this video is especially valuable. We've purchased our 5th wheel and added it to our AAA auto policy, which is good because someone hit it at the place we had it stored and damaged the front cap. Fortunately it's covered. Just didn't think the first time towing the trailer would be to a repair shop. I've been thinking about how we would have to modify our coverage when we are living in it, plus the contents, etc. Also the reminder about getting our stuff in storage insured. I hadn't thought about that. You guys are awesome. Really appreciate your servant hearts. Thank you.
Love hearing this! We are on a mission to help as many as we can not make the mistakes we made 👍😊💚. Hope to see you out here and congratulations
You two are doing a great service for RV Newbies!
Helping as best we can :) Loving the new purpose we found in helping the RV Odd Squad
I used to be licensed in Property & Casualty Insurance. I could tell people horror stories. I used to work for Travelers.
People do not understand Insurance and don’t take the time to understand. I cannot stress enough to find a very good experienced multiline agency. One that represents several carriers. One that understands what you personally need. I really urge people to research Agencies. “Captive Agents” are people that say work for State Farm, Allstate etc..they only sell those companies products.
My biggest advice? Put a reminder on your smartphone/calendar once a year to call your agent to review coverages. Everyone’s needs change. You could be under insured or even over insured.
Bottom line is that Insurance is the exchange of risk. How much can you afford to self insure vs how much do you want the carrier to take on the risk. Great video John and Mercedes!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much for taking the time to share this Katherine 💚 You can't know what you don't know and we find ourselves on a mission to educate & protect our Members. Great information and tips here!!! So happy to have you with us from the beginning. Thank you Katherine 💚💚
Ah the two most trusted people in our RV community. Thank you for another great video with so much useful information for all RVers. This definitely helps us newbies and I’m sure it will help the full timers by making them have a look at their policies to see if they are covered correctly. Stay safe out there guys. Hi Sage! Cheers!!!
Hi F & T 💚💚💚 Sage says hello😀👍
Anytime I need any info on full time rving I go to your page. Its so much more informational then any other channel out there. Thank you for going above and beyond for the RV Odd Squad!
We had a different scenario but same result. We had good insurance while on the road, all the upper end limits, medical etc. Then we decided to come off the road and put the camper in a permanent spot in a campground near out sticks and bricks. We added a deck and top and got in touch with our insurance company(USAA) to increase our coverage only to learn that that since we weren't traveling we were not covered at all. What sense does that make more of a chance to be in an accident and a claim made ,covered ,sitting still little to no chance for an accident claim not covered. Now we have an agent who's speciality is RV's and we are now properly covered.
👍😊
Whenever I feel a little down, I watch one of your videos, I enjoy the facial expressions of John and Mercedes. Thank you.
Thank you for writing us💚💚💚. These comments help get us through the tougher days. Thanks again Alvin
Glad your situation wasn't worse. My wife and I were traveling in an ambulance RV conversion. All I had was a cheap liability insurance when we got in an accident in FL. We hit a car in FL. No damage to our vehicle, but did extensive damage to the car. Our insurance paid and our rates didn't even go up. Yes, we had a good insurance agent. Also had a shipwreck once and completely lost our sailboat. Full insurance on old boats is almost the cost of the boat. However, liability was cheap, which was good as it cost almost $10,000 to remove the wreck. Totally covered. Our home owner insurance covered $7,000 replacement costs of the boats contents.
Soooo important to have a good Agent :)
Just went through this last month. I have to say Progressive is awesome. We were on the phone for 90+ minutes. Covers everything. Even storage and airfare, car rental, and hotel if I have to fly back to Florida for medical reasons.
Excellent👍😊
I just talked to Progressive and they do NOT cover you if you conduct business in your RV
@@antonyvc1 Wow. That's ridiculous.
Great info guys. With our first RV we made the mistake of not having GAP coverage. That screwed us on a total hail damage claim. We now have State Farm which is how we found that we can get coverage if we are full time. With State Farm, the coverage depends on whether we own and insure a home or not. That can change the options. Now we had a hail storm that damaged home and RV in driveway. We have to file 2 different claims and pay 2 different deductibles. Tons of fun. Happy travels.
Glad you found a good policy! So Important :)
A friend's travel trailer was destroyed (pics are on RV Tips facebook page) this past weekend by a large limb that broke from a tree on their site. It totaled the trailer. They have State Farm insurance. I do as well. I'm anxious to see how well they're taken care of. They bought theirs used from a private party and got a great deal. I don't know the details of their policy, but I'd be concerned with what State Farm valued the trailer for. When I bought my trailer, State Farm used the MSRP plus the installed accessories as the value. That said, I feel the need to double check all the other things you covered in this video. You guys are a great resource.
can you update here on what happens to them re insurance coverage/claim??
@@l.p.boudreaux1548 Will do
we're pretty sure this is an RV Odd Squad Member. This was their first trip if it's who we think it is. They posted in our private RV Odd Squad Group on FB. Appreciate an update Ted. Hoping that they are covered but we will see....Thank you
These Guys have Integrity :) www.charlotteinsurance.com/coverage/rv-odd-couple/
LoLo Sunshine It took a while (2 weeks) to get things settled and the destroyed camper hauled away. They got the market value of the trailer, which was about 30% more than they paid for it. Like I said in my original post, they got a great deal, so the settlement was replacement cost for something comparable. The important thing is no one got hurt. The trailer can be replaced, but not loved ones.
My husband and I are ready to embark on our maiden voyage in our new RV. Full time! We were wondering if you have a honest and reliable connection who we might speak with at Thousand Trails. Proud to be a member of the Odd Squad!
Congratulations Karen💚. God Bless and let us know how it goes 👍😊
Just watched your post on insurance. I am not an agent. I am an RVer having recently finished a 3 year tour of the US in a 43' motorhome. I can tell you from personal experience, you are still under insured. We were just driving our daily pickup in the Sierra's just outside of Truckee, California. It had been snowing and we drove over the summit with chains on. We were hit while removing the chains by a person illegally in this country, with a $25,000 max payout policy. That situation left us completely high and dry for recovery from him. Fortunately we had uninsured motorist coverage. That repaired our truck, but the amount did not come close to dealing with injuries to my spine and the traumatic brain injury my wife suffered. The financial limits to our policy were severely lacking and didn't get us back to normal. We now have $1 million in uninsured and under insured coverage on all of our vehicles.
Thank you for taking the time to share this with us 😊👍
Great topic. As an insurance exec (currently, President), I am pleased that you covered a complex topic and covered the distinction between personal and commercial coverages. You could have created a distinction between ACV/RV/Agreed Value vs. GAP coverage for your loan. These are very different concepts.
Ikes... So many RV insurance misconceptions exposed... I did not know as a UA-cam Creator I need commercial insurance. 🤷♀️ It’s so important to be properly covered for all possibilities with the right coverage. I am going to read the fine print of my policy. Thanks for bringing this important front end information to all RVers attention. Sounds like Marty has integrity that both weekend warriors and full time RVers need!!! Thanks guys!
Always happy to help Randi 👍😊
I have been with State Farm for 45 years and had an accident covered by them. My policy is like a homeowners insurance like one for a sticks and bricks home. They covered the towing cost for my class A. Covered all repair cost even though the accident was not our fault and the other persons insurance was Safe Auto. There policy was a minimal coverage. State Farm was great and covered everything. I would recommend State Farm for everyone. Great video. Thanks
Excellent! Thank you for sharing 👍😊
Such a great topic and great info. Your point that if your RV is over GWR your insurance won’t cover you, exactly. But also if your tow vehicle is over GWR and or GCWR, you are in the same boat. Also even if your tow vehicle is not over the overall GWR if any thing like over your tire rating, over the weight ratings of front or rear axles etc, insurance can and usually will deny your claim. Got to stay within specs. Just because you can tow it does not mean you should or even legal to do so. I would say 40% of people are over weight somewhere in their 1/2 ton trucks today. They can pull them and even stop them, but over spec somewhere. Beware or be sorry, visit a CAT scale.
So important! Thank you for sharing 👍😊
Just thinking of doing weekends and you guys are invaluable. Thanks.
Happy to help Bill 👍💚😊
Just a thought that may help with night driving in your campground- SOLAR powered ground and overhead lights. I personally found them extremely helpful when walking my dog at night in another campground.
Howdy from Austin. Always read your policy. Twice if you have to. It’s your legal contract with the carrier. All carriers are ready to take your money and ready to deny your claim. Even the best known brands and the ones on TV all of the time. Many years of litigation has proven this true. My clients have had to fight to obtain what they paid for against their own carrier on home owners, auto uninsured/underinsured etc. (when you have a covered claim and are entitled to the insurance proceeds as a matter of law). Please note. When things go south and you file a claim you are dealing with the other people’s adjuster and maybe your own adjuster. The agent that sold the policy is not really able to help settle the claim.
I’m long time boat owner and my independent insurance agent told me long ago he used progressive for his boat and I shopped around and progressive was an agreed value for boat and agreed value for the trailer. When I bought the rv got quotes for Motorhome and most comprehensive policy for best price was progressive. Same limits as you posted on the video. I pay about $750/year. Which is less than your quote but I’m not running a business out of the RV. I can run the quote for doing that and then post it. I vouch for RV and boat insurance with progressive. Both are agreed value policies.
Always great info! Thank you for taking the time to share 💚👍😊
I just upgraded based on your recommendation with your insurance company. We plan on starting a ‘beginner full time journey in October or November of this year!
Good video content for sure. We do not FT, however our insurance Company was very detailed in our policy including contents for our FW. Uninsured motorist portion was automatic, as it covered through the tow vehicle as well. Same as personal liability was mandatory. Agreed commercial is an option and must be carried if doing any business. Also not every insurance company does commercial. Also need to ensure coverages for natural items such as storms. Our last unit was damaged in a hail storm, was immediately repaired for several items. The right insurance is key and piece of mind. Safe travels!
We love helping and want our Friends covered 👍😊
Giving advice is a wonderful thing. Having someone you can actually refer someone to. Even better, by a long shot. Hope all is well. Scary numbers coming out of FL. God bless.
Hi Ken 💚 God Bless you as well & Stay safe our Friend
The "scary numbers" have been proven to be off by 90%. Instead of 100% positive test results, it is actually about 9%. The chances of 300 facilities having 100% positives results are ridiculously low. Fraudulent numbers all over the place.
Growing up, I was always told that your insurance is only as good as your agent. I’ve always kept that in mind and only deal with agents who I know are there for me.
Case in point. In my working days, I was transferred to Oklahoma City. Had a new home and great insurance agent. While out of state, tornado demolished the home. Before I could even call my agent, he called me. Said he had already been by the home site and would have a check waiting for the full purchase price of the home, etc. It was months before some of my neighbors had any kind of settlement with their insurance.
Something else I’ve always done. I’ve kept a ledger documenting every major item. What it is; model number; serial number and photos. Updated copy safely kept in bank and on file with insurance. Much easier with technology today.
I had a custom pickup stolen that always carried expensive tools. Insurance company already had list of contents so everything covered. Takes time but worth it.
So, can you document what you have in your RV and tow vehicle?
(Sorry I got a bit long winded.)
good info! Thanks!!
LoLo Sunshine ... The difference is being paid well for what you lost versus settling for some obscure figure the company decides to pay you, if any.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share this Arthur
💚
Thank you for this all important informative video 👍 My husband and I had purchased uninsured insurance because we had moved from Virginia to Florida last year and in Virginia it’s mandatory yet it’s not mandatory in Florida we discovered.... when we removed the uninsured insurance coverage, it saved us hundreds of dollars per year as it basically was double coverage for us. We were told that our collision Insurance coverage would cover everything else besides medical and after calling our medical coverage carrier, they said our medical coverage would cover for auto accidents 🏥 (not all medical coverages cover for auto accidents, so it’s important to check that before removing uninsured motorist insurance which is mainly there for covering medical). Any damage to the vehicle is covered under collision coverage 🚎
Thank you for taking the time to share this 👍😊
You two are the BEST. Thank you for representing the community with INTEGRITY. GOD BLESS YOU. bill in Florida
Hey Bill 💚 God Bless you as well. Stay safe :)
When the time comes that I purchase my RV I definitely will hire you guys during the whole process of purchasing and insurance. You truely are a great couple and a book of knowledge. Thanks... Larry
Love you too Larry 💚
Stellar job of personal revelation and teaching on the subject! Continued joy and success!
Thank you 👍😊
I'm so glad I found you on UA-cam! You have saved me thousands of dollars! Thank you very much for all of the valuable information. 😎👍
Great information for a newbie that just picked up my new travel trailer this past Friday for part time RVing. I sent this to my husband. We got our RV insurance from our SIL but will go over it more and make sure we have what we need. We will be looking at extended warranties later but didn't get one. We have a year on what we have which is a Rockwood Mini Lite 2204S Wanted to start small...but comfortable....until my husband retires in a few years.Hope to meet you all one day! Take care and thanks again for your wonderful videos.
Always good to hear that we’re helping 😊. Just make sure that you completely understand your coverage and the small print 👍
We want to thank you for putting the word out about Charlotte Insurance. Marty and Mike were great to work with and boy were we being ripped off by our insurance company. Once again...thanks so much!
Thank you for being a part of the RV Odd Squad Pami😊 We have only heard great things about Charlotte Insurance. We just passed 100 RVOS Members insured by Marty and his team.
Thanks, guys! I’m finally full time in a class c. Holy Moly I feel like Farmer Joe’s wife trying to run the farm with no help. Such a huge learning curve all day every day it’s something. On such a big learning curve!!! I actually think it will get easier when I’m on the road more. Hunkered down in the country on my sister’s property fightin’ chiggers, unlevel site, and dogs that take way too long to get their business done at night while I scan the dark woods for coyotes, snakes, scorpions, and god forbid feral hogs!😳 I think I’m ok on my insurance. My Farmer’s agent got me a policy with Foremost and for me most of the things you mentioned...I think. We laughed because he raised my tow coverage amount after he did a little research and found another agent who had to have an RV lifted out by helicopter. 😳 Told him if that happened he’d be dealing with my sons at that point cuz I would have stroked out as the RV flew off the road! BUT I do need to ask him about the pet part and storage. I got the storage after I got the policy! So thanks! Also need to ask about working in my RV??? If public school teachers have to teach from home does that make my home commercial??
Thank you for sharing your experience 👍😊.
We plan on traveling here in about a year or two because of you guys I believe we are going to be so much better off thank you for everything that you guys do information and these videos
Happy to help 👍😊
Thank you so much. Made us realize when we get our new trailer we need to carefully look over the policy and make sure all the contents are covered.
Always happy to help Amy :)
Great information Just got off the phone with Marty thank you so much for making sure I didn’t get a bad policy I’m getting a new Fifth Wheel you guys are the best I have been enjoying your videos sending positive energy to your family 🙏🏼❤️🤙🏼
Awesome Mark! Marty is a good man and runs a great company. Let us know how it goes 👍😊
I don't know if you have ever covered this so I thought I'd mention it. You mentioned weight of your RV! Also be sure that you are properly licensed to pull the weight of a large fifth-wheel trailer. In Nevada and California it is a "J" endorsement on your license which allows you to tow above 10,000 GVW, only a written test is required in these two states and it's pretty easy. Without this endorsement insurance company has another reason to deny claims and you can be cited by law enforcement.
Gene Hart, Logandale NV
Thank you for this Gene 👍😊
This video was really helpful. Thank you. We just filed a claim with Safeco and since we did not check on the trailer every 2 weeks our claim was denied. If you have Safeco Insurance you are wasting your money.
Rats! Sorry to hear this
Great video y'all. Taking 1st trip in Chinook tomorrow 🤞. As I tell folks all the time; Experience is the best teacher, especially if it's somebody else's!! 😉 Be safe, healthy and well. Best, George
Congratulations Georgiana👍😊. Let us know how it goes
One thing i learned in owning big rigs is the right insurance policy. Great awesome video here you guys. Thanks for posting this.!
You are very welcome Danie :) Thank you!
@@RVOddCouple 💞💞
You guys are AMAZING! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. Take care and may God Bless you.
God Bless you as well Pan 💚
Great video. You are spot on about having an agent. Our Agent didn't sell us a policy he educated us and gave us many options. Our agent is also a RV'er. I think that is also a big plus.
John and Mercedes... perfect timing with this video coming out today! I finally took the plunge and just bought my first fifth wheel RV today. It is brand new and the insurance is extremely important to me to make sure it's covered properly. I will pick it up in just two weeks.
I'll just be part time RVing for the next year or two. I still plan to go full time eventually. I'll go to my agent (State Farm) who has been my agent for the last 15 years and discuss all this. They carry the insurance on everything I have. Thanks to you I have a better understanding of the things I'll need to make sure are covered. Thank you so much!!
I'm planning to manage my brick and mortar retail store via cellular internet from my RV while snowbirding in Arizona in the winters. I'll be doing the book keeping, paying bills, handling the bank accounts, ect. So now I wonder if that would be considered commercial use of the RV? Even though I'll technically just be on a 5 month vacation? Really interesting points you brought up. I'll make sure to check that out with my agent too. I had never thought about the commercial use aspect before. Really glad you brought that up. It's kind of scary how easily you can think you're covered only to find out later you're not.
Congratulations Beth 👍😊 Check out Charlotte Insurance. Hope we cross paths
$1000 medical coverage is like 3 Extra Strength Tylenols at a hospital...
LOL Hector...Best laugh of the day for us😀😂
We have medical coverage via RV insurance. But we realize $1000 only covers the co-pay. We filed a claim and got the co pay back. But the second time we did that GEICO is fighting is on this. Still in process.
Kevin J .. what? Are you running over people?? 🤣🤣🤣
I don’t know about RV insurance. But on regular auto insurance, a lot of people decline being insured for medical payments because they already have separate health insurance. Paying for medical insurance on your car insurance is double covering yourself. Now if you do get in an accident you would come out ahead because you’d (maybe) get double paid. But if you drive safely, which you should be doing anyway, you probably won’t get hurt. So paying for double coverage in case something does happen seems excessive.
@@RVOddCouple By the way, I called them to get a quote and it came out double the amount for the year and that wasn't even including my tow. Staying with GEICO for now and the search continues.
Great info. I have owned RV's for 12 years and didn't know all of the details that you laid out. Thanks.
Going to check and verify my policy.
Awesome Ken! Happy to help 👍😊
Hello John and Mercedes, Thank you for another great video! My wife and I have enjoyed your videos very much, and we appreciate your straight-forward approach to sharing information and in presenting yourselves as Believers! We have clients who are full-time RVers and running a UA-cam channel, and we're fairly certain they're not adequately insured as you identified. I've sent them a link to your video and and have requested they confirm their viewing of your important information. Keep up the great work you do, have fun, stay safe, and remain healthy! Best regards, Don and Sharon
Hi Don & Sharon 😊. Happy to help. Many who full time and make money don’t properly understand their exposure. It good that you are trying to help your Friends. They are welcome to reach out to us 👍😊
Mercedes and John - I just wanted to say thanks for doing this video. Like all of your videos, it was very informative, even though I currently only have a small travel trailer and are part-timing. Also, great recommendation with Marty at Charlotte Insurance! Just hung up with him and I will be changing my policy to him. Same carrier but went from ACV to Replacement Cost as well as discussing the other coverages I had/didn't have. I will be happy to have Marty (and Gigi when the time is right) in my "back pocket" when we decide to get a Class C in a year or two when all the new owners figure out they don't have time for this stuff.
Always happy to help 😊👍 Please let us know how it all goes and thank you for supporting us
Living so close to the Canadian border here in the Adirondacks.....our insurance automatically gives us a Canadian insurance card. We are just a few miles away and crossing the border just to eat happens regularly. Well........it did before this COVID thing. Plus working in emergency services, the number of non insured drivers out there is pretty high......seen it a lot!!!
Thank you for sharing 👍😊
Thank you. This was very helpful. Reached out and was directed to National General, as we live in Oregon. Erin was very helpful and provided me a quote.
Thank you for letting us know and your support 😊👍
When we bought our Class C motorhome, at the RV dealer we called our insurance company Geico and it was all covered like our 4 cars. It includes towing. I love Geico, we have been insured by them for many years and they continue to be the least expensive.
Better dbl check 😊 We had Gieco
GEICO will drop you like a bad habit when you go to file a claim! Same as "Good Sams" denied one of my claims and and costed me 1400 bucks. I dropped them like a bad habit in return.
Great advice. I don't have an RV but I enjoy your channel! Bless you and your family.
God Bless you and yours Joe💚
Great information that will benefit so many!
New glasses for Mercedes and new shirts for both. Love it all guys!
Hey John 💚
Tire weights can fluctuate when you change brands. That could throw off your weight.
Thank you so much guys!! Me and my wife are just starting and you guys are saving us so much time and money! God Bless!
We all appreciate you guys helping newbies!
Your very welcome Stan John 💚 Hope we get to see you out here
This comment is a bit old given that this video was released over a year and a half ago but I wanted to share my experience just in case it could help someone else. I actually called Marty at Charlotte Insurance. He wasn't able to help me with my particular insurance because I life in Massachusetts and he doesn't yet operate in this state but he picked up the phone for one (which is becoming a rare thing) but he also offered to review whatever quote I obtained to ensure it was correct. So he can't write the insurance but was still willing to help. That level of commitment and decency is very rare. He also specifically mentioned that he wanted to make sure that those who were referred by by the RV Odd Couple were taken care of. and although I got the sense that he was the kind of guy who would have helped anyway, I think it is important to provide feedback to you guys that he is certainly doing that. What a great experience. Thank you both and thank you to Marty.
Another awesome video with amazing content. The best part is how honest you guys are by sharing your mistakes and lessons learned!!
Love to help Skip :)
Thanks for the information, we are in Florida as well and will reach out to Marty. We are taking delivery Friday and finding alot of company's aren't insuring in Florida. Thanks again for the info!
Omg!!!! Thank you!!!!! And the camping world story really helped us!!!! We finally got our refund after calling an attorney!!! You guys always have great advice!!!! Priceless!!!! Thank you thank you x100000
We love helping 👍💚😊
I recently moved up to a class A, and I have had several friends ask if I need a special license to drive it. I did look this up and according to the DOT laws of NC, I do not. But if I am using my RV for commercial purposes I would have to apply and get the correct license. I am not sure about the laws for your state that your drivers license is issued from but that is one more thing to check in case the insurance whats to make an issue of that. Great information and I will be getting a quote from Charlotte.
You’ll love Charlotte! Good people 😊 We don’t need a special license in FL 👍
Sent you a fresh email Bryan
Lucky for me my wife was an insurance agent for 17 1/2 years and she knew what to look for when we got insurance for our Truck and RV.
You married well :)
@@RVOddCouple
I did indeed. Just passed our 24th wedding anniversary and we'e still on our honeymoon. :)
Ive got 4 separate policies for various vehicles homeowners atv and rv and then on top of all that I have a significant umbrella policy to cover the rest.
Great job James!
You guys are just what I need! I am recently retired and in the process of buying my first travel trailer. Going from tent camping to cushy glamping. I am learning so much from your UA-cams on what not to do. My mother in law has a class c that I used and my parents and grandparents had air streams do I have been around rvs alot but boy have things changed. I'd be honored to be an odd squader and hope to meet up with you someday. Any special advise for an older single lady?
Happy that we can help Jody😊
I still maintain my home warranty coverage for my home that I purchased 2 years ago. Sometimes they won’t cover a problem, but it largely paid for itself. I just replaced a faucet with labor worth $360 and paid $60 copay. The air conditioning visits were worth it since the ac is over 20 years old and broke down 3 times. They fixed a broken sewer pipe. They didn’t cover a leaky toilet and shower tub drain. Win some, lose some. Old houses have too many problems. Read the fine print. I might not continue the policy next year since I will replace the ac/heater soon.
Thank you for sharing :)
You're so right about that last one. Overweight vehicles are a big cause of accidents as they cause more blowouts and go out of control very quickly. I'm a fmr paramedic and this isn't a joke. Get proper insurance and be honest with the insurance company. Be prepared to fight to get claims paid from not only your company, but the other driver's as well.
Sad but true Tina :) Thank you
Thank you for this information. I fall in a few of these category’s. Now I know a little more of what to cover my but. Thank you
You are very welcome 👍😊
We have full time coverage through Progressive. Something you didn’t mention but I found out in talking with them is that they have group coverages for certain categories. They will only pay out the total group cost for that category. Unless you schedule specific items and you exceed that group category coverage, you will not be covered. One good example is electronics. It was hard to get a straight answer even fro a supervisor about what those group limits were. Very frustrating! Thanks for doing the video.
Interesting
Who would you recommend for extended warranty coverage? We are purchasing new, and have heard Wholesale Warranties us often preferable to the dealer extended warranty plans. What are your thoughts? Thank you.
Outstanding video! (As was the previous video!!) I have many things to look at now, with the insurance and the service contract
Always happy to help William 👍😊
Thank you for this video. Really wondered how to go about doing the insurance. I do not have an RV ...yet...working on it, but will check first RV insurance prices before committing to purchasing.
You are very welcome Kathy😊 watch our last 3 videos before you purchase. These will help you a lot. Once you find a rig call Charlotte Insurance and give the the year model and vin and they’ll get you a quote quickly. They have a lot of integrity:). www.charlotteinsurance.com/coverage/rv-odd-couple/
Omgoodness Thank you so much for this Information! We are preparing to go full time RV ing and don’t know all the ins and outs
Glad it was helpful Tina! We didn't know either... and we were super exposed!
Wow! you have medical insurance with your RV, in Oz my insurance covers me for the whole country and pretty much everything including Temp Accommodation, Food spoilage, Emergency Towing, storage, Storm surge, Earthquakes, Fire, accidental damage and contents upto $2000 plus more except for annexe which is optional and its an agreed value policy. But you won't be covered if you overload the Trailer, Car or both. Our Health coverage is National as is our Car insurance no matter which State your in, so this was really interesting for a foreigner. I have ridden my Harley (Yep shipped her over and back) from CA to SD last year and back to CA plus AZ to IL then Route 66 in 2010. I had health and accident covered personnel bought in Oz so I read that so I was covered but my Motorcycle insurance bought in USA never checked the PDS luckily I never needed it better read the coverage next time. Oh you can have a UA-cam channel and you don't need commercial insurance in OZ for your Caravan (aka Travel trailer)
When we bought our trailer in 2009 ($30,000) we chose National General. They said for the first 5 years they would pay full replacement cost. After that, for as long as we stayed with them they would pay us what we originally paid for the trailer if it was ever totaled. We have turned in a couple of claims over $3,000 each and sent in pictures with quotes from the dealer for repair. They paid with no hassle. If our 11 year old trailer is totaled they will pay us $30,000. The coverage included about $8,000 for contents. We have been very pleased with the service and coverage.
Guess I had a big advantage with an Uncle who was a lawyer, judge, real estate agent and life long insurance agent who also provided the insurance of the state of Pennsylvania for many years. Wow good thing you didn't have any losses. You need to also check to be sure you have total health coverage outside the USA and it is always recommended to check with your agent before leaving the nation because sometimes the insurance company for what ever reason drops coverage you think you still have. Always check to be sure.
👍
Unless you have an umbrella policy besides, you are still under insured. If you at fault, and a tractor trailer looses it's load, depending on the load, it could be more than 300K, for the load alone, plus the cost of the rig.
I’m skipping the insurance for my 17 grand trailer and just taking the risk. They only payout what JD Power retail price says and it’s like 65% of what I paid
Holy cow. I don't have my RV yet but I'm insured by USAA for everything else & I'm going to get on the phone with them pronto! Thank you SO much.
We love USAA! One of the best Insurance Companies left! There aren't many who really look out for their Clients. Check your policy coverage and give Charlotte Ins. a call if you need to. Thank you for your Service 💚🇺🇸
I'm with USAA as well. They have a referral agreement with Progressive, which is who they referred me to for RV insurance. Progressive won't cover you if you're doing any business in your RV.
@@antonyvc1 Does "business" also mean "working remotely as an independent contractor"? I don't really think of it as a business since in general I only have one client at a time, usually for years. But they might see it differently.
Great wealth of information. Our agent has us on a full time policy, even tho we’re six or so on and six or so off. BUT,,, I need to get into and READ our policy. Your video here was awesome,as usual. Love you guys 🥰. Thank you.
Always happy to help Lisa💚
Just watched this. Great information. We just went to full time RVing. As this posted a few months ago, are you still standing behind and happy with Charlotte Insurance?
Actually we're even more happy now. About a month ago we had a flat. We texted Marty and he took care of us. (I mean he didn't personally fix our tire but he got us what we needed to call roadside- lol). We were on our way in like 30-45 minutes. That's really fast!
Thanks. I called Marty and he was great to work with. He took time and walked us through the process. We secured a policy and now have great full coverage. Thank you both so much for being there and relaying your experiences with us.
Wow unbelievable incredible information to prevent being uninsured! Everyone that RVs should take this info and immediately re-check to see they are correctly insured.
Thank you for this life 'savings' video!
