  • Here we have a centering practice based upon a rhythmic sequence of 5 and 7 in the key of no sharps and no flats.
The idea is to be able to recognize pitch names on the fingerboard even as they are displaced across strings.
George Van Eps' original title for his Mel Bay books was "Harmonic Mechanisms for the Guitar and Mind" but Mel Bay chose to omit the "and Mind" wording.
I dedicate these lesson to the memory of George Van Eps.
    A priceless teacher and friend.

This may wall be one of my favorite subjects. Odd signatures and polyrhythms when combined with even ones.

So I am re-examining this and so I am calling out intervals because I am transposing to another key on a completely different set of strings and finding that it fits well with some Harmonic Mechanisms you have posted. 🙂

Anything about harmony would be a great lesson. I sorely lack in that department. If you wanted to break that book down, that would be awesome.
    Thanks
    Take care

Thanks for checking in ! For applied harmony and to get your fingers moving in a contrapuntal way please have a look at the Melodic Motion Etudes Playlist. Even getting just a few notes of these studies into your hands and ears will suggest many creative directions. ua-cam.com/play/PLoLOItWSclTUy_Z75f-xZ8A0KaswDvsxR.html

That sounds good. I've heard people use phonetics to sound out rhythm but never have figured out what the h3ll they're trying too convey . This one I get cuz I'm ignorant and thick headed. Tah Cah Tah Cah with 5 & 7 note grouping. Absolutely love it! 🙂

I'm glad WJ !! This is a fun way to create a trance - like groove. I can imagine it might go over well out on the mall

So I do use tab . And it has served me well. But I play and call out either intervals including 9ths 11ths and 13ths and their various forms. Or note name's of the scale
I love this Harmonic Mechanism but it gets kinda convoluted when @ 0:56 you call out a 7th interval ...then a fret number...then a note of the scale. And @ 1:54 fret 4 is not in the key of no sharps and no flats...even though you play the 3rd fret and if you were calling out intervals then F is the 4th ,but you are calling out fret numbers and fret4 is not the 4th. So I'm not one to be so critical probably wrong and if so please delete this comment....but I try too stick to intervals mostly. Most important though is I would love to deap dive into this sequencing stuff. 🙂

@ 0:56 it is a 7th interval and a fret number and a pitch name all at the same time. I feel we need to be conversant in all of those facets.
@ 1:54 I simply mis-spoke and said the 4th fret when it should be the 3rd fret as you point out.
I'll try to make another video on these kinds of sequences and pay special attention to the points you brought up .
I'm glad you enjoy this sound !

Good observation, I also thought that mix of notes, intervals and key mentions can lead up to confuse people who don't have a clue about music.
