LESSON - HARMONIC MECHANISMS FOR THE MIND # 22 - GRATITUDE AND AIM
Here we have a centering practice based upon cultivating gratitude daily and finding something that you serve beyond yourself.
Please ask questions if more clarification is needed
Here is the video I mentioned about fingerboard mapping :

George Van Eps' original title for his Mel Bay books was "Harmonic Mechanisms for the Guitar and Mind" but Mel Bay chose to omit the "and Mind" wording.
I dedicate these lesson to the memory of George Van Eps.

    Ah the perfect type of music for video games. The goal of video game is to make soundscapes, and environmental music is to add atmosphere that you can listen to for 1000 hours with out muting. Lets take Skyrim for example. Great music, but 400 hours of game play, I turn it off. Any music played on loop can get annoying. Except if its music that you feel, but not listen to while playing. A good example of this is Elden Ring, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild. So if you ever do get the chance to frelance on video game music keep in mind of when you need the player to feel like a bad ass (but with difrent scores) or just let them feel the mood of the environment. As composer you probably figure it out more than me just spiting out my charisma roll. Cause its just my opinion and gripe on video game music.

    So I am revisiting this Harmonic Mechanism and have to say how you use the term Displacement of a note is way cool and on it's own your arrangement sounds good. After thinking about this for a minute...more like an hour...I've reduced this Mechanism too get any 6th sounds on either of the 2 sets of strings I'm either playing a first inversion major 3rd or a first inversion minor 3rd. The coolest thing is I can Displace any 3rd all day long too any note I wish too. Can't wait to practice what I'm thinking...but I believe I'm on the right track. 🙂

    I like this. But kinda spending time on it...at first I thought diatonic too one key. At first D but then modulated to F# by moving up a note and instead of repeating a pattern use a lower bass note twice. I usually can simplify movements. I'm just missing something. I mean I know what 6ths are diatonicly 1-6 2-7 3-1 4-2 ect. And know fret placements. We're not really back cycling or anything like that. I'm sorry need that extra idea that puts this all together for me. 🙂

    • @basicsforbaroqueimprovisation
      @basicsforbaroqueimprovisation 10 днів тому

      I think I know how to approach this for you. This exercise tracking the alphabet letters so D to B is a 6th, B to G is a 6th, G to E is a 6th, E to C# is a 6th, C# to A is a 6th, A to F# is a 6ths, F# to D# is a 6th, D# to B is a 6th, and it carries on with the fingering beginning now at the 7th fret B. So this doesn't just stay in one Diatonic scale but expands out farther. At 2:03 I mention that we are displacing the E down 2 octaves and continuing on. After that I mentions 3rds a few times but I meant to say 6ths. In a way 6ths and 3rds are the same for me as they are inversions of one another. E to G is a 3rd, G to E is a 6th. Hope this helps !

    • @basicsforbaroqueimprovisation
      @basicsforbaroqueimprovisation 11 днів тому

      Thank you for giving a listen ! That slow attack cello / organ sound is something I've been working on for a long time and involves a special pedal by Electro Harmonix called Attack / Decay. That pedal is supposed to sound like tape being played backwards ( which it can do ) but I immediately heard the possibility of modifying the front end of the attack and getting that smooth organ-like or cello-like sound. If you own an Attack Decay Pedal : Taking a look at my current settings : I always have it in Poly mode. Sens at 10 o'clock, H Vol off, Tone at 10 o'clock, Harmonix off, Blend full clockwise, Attack at 9 o'clock, Decay full clockwise. Explore and see what you come up with ! There's also a pedal compressor and a long reverb from the Boss Katana MKII amp. I also use very light strings for separation and expressiveness. ( Ernie Ball Zippy Slinkys .007 - .036 on the Stratocasters and Ernie Ball Extra Slinky .008 - .038 on the Les Pauls, Sire H7, Astroluxe Cadet ) Wishing you the best - John

    I don't like givin up my secrets which aren't secrets at all but common knowledge but I've been takin this concept to extreme limits. You definitely know what I mean because it's obviously inherent in everything you do on your channel. Once again I have to say I am very grateful to be able to find some gems that you have given us...skills of playing Guitar 🙂

      No - These are brief overviews of basic ideas and approaches. There are other videos on UA-cam that go through exercises from George's books. I do have a playlist of transcribed excerpts from George's recordings. : ua-cam.com/play/PLoLOItWSclTWVM6j0k1y21c3XalpIBMhs.html Best Wishes - John
