Finding your very first camera can be a little tricky and overwhelming. With this video I wanted to lay out my thought process and how I would think if I were to chose my first camera again. Hope it doesn't make you more confused 😂

Went from Nikon to Sony, also had the opportunity to use Canon extensively. I would say that Sony has a slight edge because 1). They are the earliest to the mirrorless system with the most spread of lenses to choose from (including many third-parties ones). 2). All of the recent cameras are great (autofocus, colours and features).
The difference in terms of their performances are now pretty slim so you won't go wrong with any brands.
I think the main question is apsc or full frame?

My first camera is the ZV-E10 (still my camera) and I am very happy with it. The only two things I wish it has, is a sensor stabilisation and 4k 60pfs for smooth B-roll But in terms of price, it is a true jack-of-all-trades.

Great video! I started with a Nikon D3200. Thanks to your videos, I bought the Sony a6400. I have only three lenses: Sony 11 mm 1.8, Sigma 18-50 2.8 and Tamron 18-300mm 3.5-6.3. It’s a good setup, I guess! I need some lens to fill the gap between 11mm and 18mm. Your job is an inspiration!

would you say that SPECIFICALLY for fashion photography is better to focus on Canon than Sony? I'm feeling a bit lost about which one to buy as a beginner. I know for a fact that i want to focus on that field and i have a photographer friend who is begging me to buy the Sony A6700 but im not sure yet since a lot of people recommend canon for that field. What's your opinion about this?

  • @AlecBuxton

I know what you mean about different camera brands operating differently I use bridge cameras that although are simpler to operate because you don't have to mess around with different lenses
They both operate slightly differently one bring a Nikon the other a Sony with the Sony one being a bit more complicated to use as was designed to be used more like a basic DSLR than what the Nikon one was designed as a high quality sample point and shoot where you can override some of the automatic settings via the digital menus which can be time consuming going through all menus to adjust some of the settings the way that you want but
Some are still picked by the camera in order to maintain photo

3:40. This is something i REALLY wished i understood earlier. Have recently change system for the second time and its a heck more of a hassle than people actually understand. What you start shooting today isnt nescessary as important as to what you will be shooting in 2-3 or even 5-6 years.
Trying to plan ahead is key here i think. If you buy a tripod, buy one that can withstand a heavier camera. If you buy a filter system, buy on that can cover bigger lenses and so forth. Then buying gear in the beginning will be a lot easier since its less of a problem to upgrade later if you so choose.

    • @thaticelandicguy

Good Day and thank you for approaching this subject with so much humor! I loved your analysis on Fujifilm for hippies, it touches me all the more since I was born in 1969 😉 With Fujifilm, you have to make a distinction between the old philosophy (complicated bodies without stabilization which gave me hives) and the new XS-10 and 20 bodies + the formidable GFX 100 II. These boxes allow you to choose fine art color film + filtered black & white which has no equal! In addition, you can directly send the JPEGs to a Polaroid system box, in this case Instax, to expose by scanning and develop (chemically) a durable photograph since it is water and sun resistant! Sharing a photo that appears little by little before your eyes is like finding the soul of a child^^ There is an option that I love with my XS-10 : by taking 1 shot, I have 3 JPEGs with 3 different argentic films. Finally, the double mechanical stabilization which allows me to film with the 16-80 zoom handheld! To try it is to adopt it!

I agree, as a beginner, pic a camera and learn the basics! I've suggested APS-C cameras like the Canon R50, Canon R10, Sony A6400 as beginners cameras at this moment. . The ZV-E10 could also be a good beginner camera, but I think a VF is important to have in the beginning.

And I wasn't even changing brand! I watched ALL the videos for that camera and from non English speaking youtubers too! 🤣Anyway, for me the type of usage is the most important factor, then the price, the weight, the grip and the colors that it produces. i guess depends on the lens. canon rf doesnt have third party yet, so if you want to invest in good glass, its going to get expensive really quickly. (unless you get old canon dslr lens with adapter, but that kinda defeats the purpose of mirrorless camera being smaller & lighter)

Man, there are many stereotypes in this video 😅
However: For a beginner Fuji, Sony or panasonic. The low end canon bodies are a bit too low end. Nikon has pretty cheap used full frame options - but the lenses get expensive fast (Nikon APS-C isn't an option right now). All of the other three big brands have recently launched successors to very good cameras. The older versions (Panasonic S5, G9, Sony A6400 or A7iii, Fujifilm X-S10, X-H1, X-T2/20/3/30) should be available for pretty decent money right now. Hence: Those are the beginner cameras

Product and Family/travel photography AND ease of use - So many choices like Fujifilm X-S10, Canon R10, Canon RP, Nikon Z5, Nikon Z6, Sony A6700 and I'm completely lost here! Canon have that convinient option to use EF-RF adapter and their older great lenses WITH AF without problems + their new stunning and expensive RF lenses. Nikon also offers the adapter for their older great lenses but only some of them work with AF... Fujifilm offers fantastic lenses but they're quite expensive and their overall integration with modern smarthphones sucks... Sony has some beautiful cameras, compact and great-looking, my favorite ones in terms of looks but they are not easy to use at all + they're easily the most expesive here + they have expensive lenses.
